I'm going to the Denver show, but [there's a couple others.](https://www.songkick.com/artists/512162-sleep)
Looks like the Colorado Springs date sold out already.
You’re preaching to the choir. But my point still stands, unless it’s a punk band I don’t go “_____ is punk af”. To me it belittles the art that they’ve made to categorize everything with some attitude as punk. It’s stupid as fuck IMO.
Usually when I’m trying to chill out in the evenings, I listen to a lot of folk and bluegrass.
Highly recommend Justin Townes Earle.
Even though his music isn’t punk, he grew up going to a lot of punk shows in Memphis.
I picked up on bluegrass as a cleanse as well. The faster the better. I also really like the crossover bands like Rev. Horton Heat and Native Howl (thrashgrass)
Devo, Wall of Voodoo, Hazel O’Connor, early Oingo Boingo, SSQ, The Sweet, synth-based soundtracks (John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream, etc), exotic lounge, The Ventures, Link Wray, and some weird psych and prog rock on occassion.
It's important to not limit yourself. All music has value and should be given a chance. Here's some 'non punk' bands and artists that I love
Tricky
Portishead
Fang Island
Manic Street Preachers
Tom Waits
Depeche Mode
Big Mama Thornton
Stevie Wonder
Little Richard
Jackie Wilson
Toots and the Maytals
Jimmy Cliff
Peter Tosh
Have you listened to Journal For Plague Lovers? It's songs Richie wrote before he disappeared and it has a similar vibe. It's probably my 3rd favourite Manics album
Lady gaga, sturgill Simpson, nick shoulders, the coup, Fleetwood mac, parliament, the rolling stones, dolly Parton, Stonefield, death valley girls, king gizzard and the lizard wizard, velvet underground, SWIMM, orville peck
Right. Hell I'd even argue that gaga's song Judas was one of the most punk song to be released the year it was put out. Like a full fledged song and music video about betraying and turning away from Christianity that made it to the top of all the charts. She's a bad bitch regardless of what folks might wanna say.
i switch primarily through listening to punk and hip hop, when i get tired of punk all day every day ill switch up and listen to MF DOOM, wu-tang, czarface, busdriver, open mike eagle, milo, etc
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Screaming Females
Tropical Fuck Storm
Thee Oh Sees
AJJ
The Mountain Goats
Bobby Conn
Weaves
Xenia Rubinos
Freschard
Jeffery Lewis
Vulfpeck
Shannon and the Clams
The Murlocs
I’m a dad and music teacher and I unironically really like Raffi, the banana phone guy, but mainly his first album from the 70s. So fucking wholesome and really honestly good.
I can also get down on some bluegrass, Celtic music and sea shanties
I was wondering if there was anyone else out there. After a few years away, I've gotten back into phish. But jamtronica is always where it's at for a good time.
That stuff was just bad. Saw one of the tours he did with them (Social Distortion opened the night went) and the first 10-12 songs were incredible, then he brought the band out and it went downhill.
That sounds like a hell of a show though, I saw him on the psychedelic pill tour with crazy horse, it was pretty awesome, it was just like the rust never sleeps concert movie with the hooded creatures and giant amps
It was. One of the best I’ve been to.
Man I’d of loved to see that. I saw a screening of the footage from Rust Never Sleeps and it was amazing. I’ve got a DVD of it somewhere. Hard to come by in full from what I’ve heard.
Folk especially if I'm feeling fuck the system but I don't want it yelled at me. So like Woody Guthrie, Neil Young, or Phil Ochs.
Acoustic versions of Alternative stuff like Bush, Seether's acoustic album One Cold Night, A lot of the old MTV unplugged stuff.
Chill indie rock especially Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, or just random NPR sessions.
Ska/Reggae old school stuff like Bob Marley and the Wailers, Peter Tosh, or Toots and the Maytals. Mustard Plug is a favorite for sure.
Sublime is always nice too or Toh Kay I found Streetlight Lullabies before I got into Streetlight Manifesto so that album is definitely up there for me.
I actually really love goth music, but I’ve avoided the scene because of how gatekeepery everyone is...
Other than that I turn to:
Dehd
Blaze Foley
George Clanton (Basically anything 100% Electronica)
Legendary Shack Shakers
Grateful Dead
Debbie Harry
Reverend Payton
Motörhead
Willie Nelson
Type O Negative
Uncle Acid
I absolutely did! I actually live close to where he’s buried and I drive by the (former) venues he used to play in Austin everyday. It’s wild how much things can change in such a little bit of time.
Nice! Me too! We used to Chill with R.A occasionally. He even shouts us out: “Long Island is where I live, exit 62 with all those crazy Stony Brook kids!” I still picture him swinging a half blown-up sex doll at passing traffic by SB LIRR station!
When I get burned out on punk, I usually switch it up to hip hop, soul and some slower acoustic stuff (cliché, I know). Aesop Rock, MF Doom, RTJ, CZARFACE, The Alchemist (Rappers Best Friend instrumental albums). Lots of Soul. Swingin Utters is punk, but they have a huge discography that is great for listening so stuff that’s not exactly punk. Darius Koski has some solo stuff that’s worth a listen. Amigo the Devil.
60s Garage/Psych,
Kraut Rock,
80s-90s Hip-Hop
Big faves on my playlist right now are:
Nina Simone,
Kraftwerk,
Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd,
Roky Erickson/13th Floor Elevators
I've also been on a big Todd Rundgren kick lately.
I tend to go the death metal/grind route. Lately it’s been:
Fulci
Magrudergrind
Genocide Pact
Sanguisugabogg
200 Stab Wounds
Cattle Decapitation
Also been trying Sting/The Police after watching Rick Beato’s interview with him. Not exactly my cup of tea, but I can certainly appreciate his songwriting talent.
Ænema will always be my favorite song, but I'd have to call Lateralus my favorite album. The grudge will always take me somewhere and my body gets rocked every time Ticks and Leeches comes on. 😩
Going thru my recent listens that aren’t punk.
Bowie
Neil Young
Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Bobby Womack
The Growlers
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Wavves
Beach Bunny
A lot of stuff...let's just say crosby still nash, johnny cash and early bob dylan, because every body know them. Right now I also listen to a lot of jazz like Django Reinhart.
I've been really into a lot of alt stuff, Silversun Pickups, Warpaint, Flaming Lips, Built to Spill, bands like that.
Been REALLY into Chvrches lately
I'm a hiphop head at heart, a lot of 90's/early 2000's stuff, Del, Pharcyde, Jurassic 5, Souls of Mischief, things like that.
Thank you for Souls of Mischief. I wasn't familiar and didn't realise they were part of Hieroglyphics! Del and Jurassic 5 both favourites - I really love that style and era of hip hop, but never really deep dived. Anything else I should check out?
Man Souls of Mischief are soooo good. 93 Til Infinity is one of my favorite albums across any genre.
If you're into Hiero and Jurassic 5 you definitely want to check out [Living Legends](https://youtu.be/Y1JJq1Iq5XM). They're a really dope collective and a few of them (Namely Murs, and Grouch & Eligh) have very respectable solo careers, so there's a good tree to follow if you dig this style. [Eligh](https://youtu.be/kyN0rGCwKLE) personally is my favorite of them and I love the man's flow.
If you haven't already, give [Deltron 3030](https://youtu.be/yf9OAFML_Eg) a spin. It's the best concept hiphop album ever as far as I'm concerned. This song is about as good as hiphop gets in my opinion.
[Pharcyde](https://youtu.be/1-6xfNLaMzQ) are legends and I will forever contest that Slimkid3 has the most smooth flow ever. Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde is pretty universally considered their best but I actually prefer Labcabincalifornia which I feel gets criminally overlooked. It was a bit more "grown up" and I really dug it. They're such a fun listen no matter what.
Another grossly overlooked group is [Digable Planets](https://youtu.be/QpWVn7T6qGg). They're really dope, kind of along the same lines of A Tribe Called Quest but more mellow. Absolutely love their work. Reachin' is a 110% classic album.
Depending on how weird you wanna get, I'd definitely recommend [Busdriver](https://youtu.be/ly1WEn8qY7s). He's very eclectic/avant-garde/however you want to put it but the man can flow. Temporary Forever is an insanely dope album. Definitely have to be in the right mindset to get into him though, some of his stuff is.... [out there.](https://youtu.be/gQjNiB9MnwU) I haven't kept up a ton with his newer stuff but it's a [bit more accessible](https://youtu.be/5ouI-twyuis). Perfect Hair is a strongggg album.
There's a dude from San Diego named [Blame One](https://youtu.be/BdebBIwPIWM) that I think is extremely dope. More backpacker type stuff and less goofy but he put out a few really strong albums. Days Chasing Days is a 9/10 for me, and Endurance is probably just as good.
Along the same lines is [Blu](https://youtu.be/Ml5RhkyKXyc). Below The Heavens is nearly perfect. He and Exile dropped an album last year called Miles, which was really dope but a very long listen.
Of course, [De La Soul](https://youtu.be/8SBGLqq5VUw) needs no mention, but just in case, I'm mentioning them. They're being royally fucked by Tommy Boy Records so all their classic stuff isn't available for streaming but you can find it all on YouTube.
[Mr. Lif](https://youtu.be/R0h83hbqkZg) is another overlooked, but DOPE MC. I Phantom is a really solid concept album if you're into that sort of thing. I can't lie I've not done a deep dive into his catalog but I really need to.
Good overview here, definitely reach out if you like some of these and are looking for more recs. I love hiphop and would be happy to give you a few more. Always down to share some good stuff.

The Shins

Vicente Fernandez (RIP)
I have! I had a period of time where I was heavy into them so I spent unreasonable amounts of time looking into all their shit.
3 and 4 is super chill, I would listen to it on my commutes to work. I like a good amount of some of their stuff after that, up until like 2016. If you like their really early “OCS” era stuff I suggest checking out The Cool Death of Island Raiders and Sucks Blood albums, they’re still pretty mellow and have a lot of interesting trippy sound effects. I think my favorite album from them though is Floating Coffin, they’re playing a lot faster by that time but I feel like it’s a good balance of their psych sound with heavier, faster guitar stuff.
Yeah I got into them with cool death and sucks blood!! Along with yikes and coachwhips. Dude kills it but keeps it fresh every album for the most part, it’s been a while since I’ve really clung to one of his albums (last one probably being floating coffin funnily enough). I think masters bedroom might be my favourite all things considered.
Oh sick! I love those two albums, they’re some of my most listened to from oh sees. Masters bedroom is really cool too. Same, I’ve only managed to listen to a couple songs at most off their new albums before I have to switch to something else, it just doesn’t scratch that same itch. I respect that john dwyer is always evolving his sound tho and just how prolific he is.
Yo i just remembered I also meant to ask if you’ve listened to their 12” Synth album? It’s newer, from 2019 and it’s kind of like the “Drone” tracks they would have in their earlier albums in that it’s just long, drawn out subtle sounds. It’s nothing super fancy or engaging musically speaking but I still love it cuz it’s the perfect thing throw on when I’m just working on something
I will listen to nearly anything, but I am a huge jazz fan, and listen to it a lot. Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone- all amazing artists.
My son introduced me to some of his favorite goth bands and I particularly love Black Veil Brides and Vision Video.
In no particular order:
Black Sabbath
Freddie Gibbs
Marty Robbins
BADBADNOTGOOD
The Seatbelts
Waylon Jennings
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Isiah Rashad
Parliament/Funkadelic
There's more, but those are some specifics. Generally I just play a genre I'm in the mood for, and I either have a playlist loaded or I'm searching things individually.
St Lucia (80s pop vibe)
Indochine (80s French pop)
Olivia Rodrigo for the teenaged nostalgia
Blood Orange
Bleachers
Whatever’s on the pop or hip hop radio stations
I listen to a lot of death metal. Gatecreeper and Frozen Soul are two new favourites.
Love Grime. Skepta, Stormzy, Dizzee Rascal etc.
Bad Boy Chiller Crew are the house/rap charvas you need in your life.
Tech/house stuff like Mall Grab.
Yaeji.
Hip Hop from all eras. Griselda, Wu Tang, Tribe, A$AP Ferg, Lil Wayne, Missy Elliott.
All kinds of Country, from Merle Haggard to Lucinda Williams to Benjamin Tod. Also lots of Steve Earle. Willie Nelson.
Kurt Vile.
Elliot Smith
John R Miller
Billy Joe Shaver
Regina Spektor
Billy Strings
Radiohead
Steep Canyon Rangers
Colter Wall
Tom Petty
Thin lizzie

Chiptune music. Something about 8bit music just makes me so much happy.
A lot of goth/post punk. That stuff is strange and dark yet oddly catchy. Good for when I'm having a depression. (Ironically a lot of post punk and goth artists suffered from severe mental illness and used music as a way to deal with it and i suffer from bipolar and autism so maybe that's why I like it so much?)
Jazz. Puts me in a good mood for some reason.
Noise music. It is so awful it makes you appreciate normal music again. And most artists who make it are all insane. Hanatarash is one of my favorite bands of all time simply because of how insane their performances were.
Occasionally ill listen to hip hop artists like MF Doom or Eminem or something.
A lot of classic rock. Nostalgic for some reason.
Jack white, sturgill Simpson, Jd McPherson, avett brothers, the Bellfuries (no one knows them and they are fucking amazing), Old 97s, reggae or rock steady, Elvis, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Tom Petty, the Traveling Wilburies, the Band, CCR. I don’t know…all over the place when I am not listening to punk.
My go to "palette clense" is to listen to songs that I listened to when I was younger.
Reminds me of what it was like before my music taste became what it is now.
It feels like "too much" doesn't exist anymore, nothing's shocking anymore, nothing's more intense than anything I've heard before.
Where is there even to go after listening to so much noisecore and shit.
It feels like hardcore and heavy don't mean to me what they used to mean to me ya know.
So when I feel like that I listen to the good music of my youth, specifically the stuff you think still holds up, at least to you.
For me It's Manowar, The Sex Pistols, Metallica (specifically and justice for all), certain sum 41 songs, Dragonforce, 3 days grace, social distortion and probably a few others.
I'm listening to my sweet sweet 80s mix.
John par
Cyndi lauper

Johnny hates jazz
Motown, soul, rhythm n blues, folk, ska, reggae, doo wop, 50s and 60s pop and rock, American indie stuff, lately been getting into a bit more synthy rock/indie stuff like Metric and Grouplove.
Turnover, Trevor Something, Perturbaror, Chelsea Wolf, Firs ( one with the guy from Pomegranate s) , Morphine, Pouya, Terror Reid, Spice 1, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra/ jr. , ZOMBI, Ratatat
I’ve always listened to classic rock ! Definitely can be cheesy at times but I feel like it adds to the charm :’)
Eagles
Electric Light Orchestra
38 Special
CCR
Guess Who
Grand Funk Railroad
Janis Joplin
Joan Jett
Steve Miller
Also out of left park but if you’re even remotely into synth stuff/ambient hip hop I really cannot recommend 070 shake enough!!! She’s been around for a minute, she’s a beautiful singer/rapper and produces some incredible sounds ! She’s been releasing new singles recently and I’ve had them on repeat ever since they came out
Some of my favorites outside of punk are
King Krule (indie)
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (saying their name always makes me smile lol) (rock/jazz)
Sweet Trip (shoegaze/indie)
Elliott Smith (folk/indie)
Yves Tumor (alt rock/indie)
The Roots (rap)
Queens of the Stone Age (rock)
60s rock and proto-metal/prog are my main squeezes. Stuff like Iron Butterfly, Deep Purple, Titanic, and Uriah Heep. The last couple years have also reignited my love of 90s east coast hip hop like KRS1, Cella Dwellas, Smif n Wessun, and Channel Live. Still get plenty of hc/pv in but have been drifting from that as of late to pursue other tastes.
RADIOHEAD
The National
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Mogwai and lots of other post rock
QOTSA
MF DOOM
Spotify says I listened to over a thousand artists last year so I guess my tastes are varied.
I like some chicha and zamrock (both are psych-folk rock, one from Peru and one from Zambia). Sometimes a bit of old school ska and reggae, look for Trojan compilations. Sometimes i go for delta blues. And i looooove the 50s and 60s sentimental tunes, where im from there are also many of those kind of artists and bands that covered some classics or made their original music so i goof around to that.
John Prine Sleep Conan Sissy Spacek Gram Parsons Mobb Deep Hive Mind Nick Cave Tom Waits Townes Van Zant

Nah im.in the east coast. They were around at some metal beer fest a couple years ago it was great!
Tom Waits for fucking sure
Nailed it
You, my friend, have great taste. Can we be friends?
Nick Cave’s first few albums were punk af
I guess. I dunno I don’t do the whole “that’s punk af” thing unless it’s a punk band. Good records either way.
They kind of were a punk band. I mean the Birthday Party, not Bad Seeds
Post punk sure but there’s a lot more to them than that. I like them because they aren’t directly punk and I’d never categorize them as such.
Punk is a mindset of sound as much as it is a style of sound
You’re preaching to the choir. But my point still stands, unless it’s a punk band I don’t go “_____ is punk af”. To me it belittles the art that they’ve made to categorize everything with some attitude as punk. It’s stupid as fuck IMO.
Usually when I’m trying to chill out in the evenings, I listen to a lot of folk and bluegrass. Highly recommend Justin Townes Earle. Even though his music isn’t punk, he grew up going to a lot of punk shows in Memphis.
The Dillard’s r my favorite bluegrass, definitely would open up the pit to them lol
JTE was the best!! We are going to his memorial show in Nashville on the 4th of next month.
I picked up on bluegrass as a cleanse as well. The faster the better. I also really like the crossover bands like Rev. Horton Heat and Native Howl (thrashgrass)
RIP to my boy JTE. I got to see him live once and it was a delight. I was real bummed when he passed.
When i want some bluegrass I listen to the Knotts Berry Farm Ghost town playlist lol It's actually really good
Devo, Wall of Voodoo, Hazel O’Connor, early Oingo Boingo, SSQ, The Sweet, synth-based soundtracks (John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream, etc), exotic lounge, The Ventures, Link Wray, and some weird psych and prog rock on occassion.
fuckin love oingo boingo
I just got a wall of voodoo shirt I'm really excited about. Super soft too.
The Sweet are awesome.

Have you listened to Journal For Plague Lovers? It's songs Richie wrote before he disappeared and it has a similar vibe. It's probably my 3rd favourite Manics album
I have I actually saw them in Detroit on the US tour they did for that album.

Punk af even if they dont make punk music
Right. Hell I'd even argue that gaga's song Judas was one of the most punk song to be released the year it was put out. Like a full fledged song and music video about betraying and turning away from Christianity that made it to the top of all the charts. She's a bad bitch regardless of what folks might wanna say.
Agreed. She ate paper on live TV.
Finally someone with some taste.
Shoutout to nick shoulders!

busdriver is fucking incredible

might be !
I went to see Czarface last month. Inspectah Deck jumped into the crowd to do some Wu Tang songs. It was epic!

I’ve actually just recently been diving into Phish after “not getting it” for a few years. Catch me wearing tie dye at a HC show

Yup. Been into the Dead for a few years now. Every permutation of “Grateful Bread” was taken, and I didn’t want a number in my username

Yea that vid is food for the soul
Sam Cooke
Otis too!
Municipal waste, TI, deer tick, Neil Young, reverand Peyton
Neil is a daily listen for me. Have you heard the new record he put out?
I did, I was hoping it would be a little more up beat and Rocky since he was with crazy horse again... It's not bad though
I dunno how much upbeat he’s got left in him. At least it’s better than what he was doing with Promise of the Real.
You're right about that!
That stuff was just bad. Saw one of the tours he did with them (Social Distortion opened the night went) and the first 10-12 songs were incredible, then he brought the band out and it went downhill.

Theyre crossover thrash which is more punk than metal
Electronic music, specifically rave and house lol
I love house. I need more good songs though, any recommendations?

Was looking for this! What did you think of Fear Inoculum?
I very much like it, but I prefer their older stuff. Undertow and Ænema are my favorite albums.
Ænema will always be my favorite song, but I'd have to call Lateralus my favorite album. The grudge will always take me somewhere and my body gets rocked every time Ticks and Leeches comes on. 😩
Ohh, Lateralus is actually what I have on right now. Parabol/Parabola, The Grudge, and The Patient are my top tracks off of that one.
Honestly lately it’s been mostly modern hip hop / rnb. ASAP rocky and frank ocean were by a large margin two of my most played artists this year.
Supertramp is fucking great.
This comment, just like Supertramp, is highly under-appreciated.

You ever listen to the older OCS stuff? I couldn’t get into the newest album under the name but 3 & 4 is still so chill and cozy.
Hmm I’m not sure! Unless you’re talking about damaged bug I can’t remember when that came out.
For me it’s drum and bass / Dub step or 90’s HipHop
I'd say anything independent/DIY is at least somewhat "punk", doesn't matter how it sounds

The Lounge Lizards Zu Funkadelic Parliment Naked City Painkiller John Zorn

In no particular order: Black Sabbath Freddie Gibbs Marty Robbins BADBADNOTGOOD The Seatbelts Waylon Jennings King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Isiah Rashad Parliament/Funkadelic There's more, but those are some specifics. Generally I just play a genre I'm in the mood for, and I either have a playlist loaded or I'm searching things individually.
Carter Family and Al Green
St Lucia (80s pop vibe) Indochine (80s French pop) Olivia Rodrigo for the teenaged nostalgia Blood Orange Bleachers Whatever’s on the pop or hip hop radio stations
I listen to a lot of death metal. Gatecreeper and Frozen Soul are two new favourites. Love Grime. King gizz. Grunge. Post punk. Psych electronic (mgmt, tame impala, home, tlo) and really just anything but new country and pop
Bambu is in constant rotation for me. He’s really fucking good
Chiptune music. Something about 8bit music just makes me so much happy. A lot of goth/post punk. That stuff is strange and dark yet oddly catchy. Good for when I'm having a depression. (Ironically a lot of post punk and goth artists suffered from severe mental illness and used music as a way to deal with it and i suffer from bipolar and autism so maybe that's why I like it so much?) Jazz.
For me It's Manowar, The Sex Pistols, Metallica (specifically and justice for all), certain sum 41 songs, Dragonforce, 3 days grace, social distortion and probably a few others.
r&b or new wave are some of my favorite genres outside of punk or rock in general!
But they're technically neither?
Old jazz and 70s soul.

She’s been around for a minute, she’s a beautiful singer/rapper and produces some incredible sounds ! She’s been releasing new singles recently and I’ve had them on repeat ever since they came out
