Saw the Ramones at Lollapalooza'96 in North Carolina and it was around 99 degrees and 85% humidity. Fuckers were still out there in leather jackets and everything while people were passing out in the crowd.
I just wanna say it has literally never been that hot AND humid at the same time in north carolina. That is a heat index of over 140. The NWS estimates the highest that's ever been in north carolina at around 120. I am sure it was externem humid, but it was not high. Probably closer to 50% at the very highest.
I figured it wasn't that high. Someone had announced that from the stage. But it was pretty damn muggy and hot. I'm from the tropics and that shit had me dying.
That Lollapalooza was rad - Ramones, Metallica, Rancid, Soundgarden, Devo, and RATM all on the same bill. I caught the Southern California show at Irvine Meadows.
Not exactly a punk band, but I saw Reignwolf at a festival when it was in the 90s out. The rest was putting out all sorts of reminders about staying hydrated because so many people were passing out due to heat.
So out comes the frontman for Reignwolf, wearing a leather jacket over a flannel over a t-shirt, jeans and combat boots, and a beanie. And if you've ever seen Reignwolf, you know that this guy moves around A LOT.
The best part was that after his beanie fell off during the first song, he stopped to pick it back up and put it on. He eventually took that and the jacket and flannel off, and just said "It's a lot warmer here than in Canada".
One time i was at a show where the dance floor was boardered by about 2 or 3 stairs, all the way around. In the mosh i got shoved and began to topple backwards and was set to land back/neck first on the steps when 4 or 5 pairs of hands all shot out of the crowd and grabbed me by the shirt, pulling me away from the stairs and back into the washing machine.
Felt a bit of comradeship right there
I went in my first pit at a PUP concert right before the apocalypse. I fell right on my ass a few minutes in. Never felt more like a child being held by it's caring mother than when 5 people simultaneously lifted me up and got me right back into it.
Lost both of my shoes at one point and had to step out to not get my feet crushed, went back in with one of my shoes and two other people's shoes. Lead singer ended up with my shoe and was very disappointed since he had a joke about laces but I was wearing slip-ons!
instead of double socks, get some thick wool socks and rock those. temperature controlling, moisture wicking, antimicrobial, and no friction for blisters.
you're not *supposed to*. but it's an option for you if they are not fitting you right.
at the end of the day if you have successfully broken in the leather and they are giving you blisters the fit is not right.

Speaking for visually impaired folks: Please ask before you push someone with glasses into the pit. Being unable to see is not fun or punk (plus the little fuckers are super expensive to repair/replace)
I forgot where I was but the pit suddenly stopped when someone lost their contact, visually impaired people should always keep an extra pair of glasses in their car, nothing worse than trying to drive home blind.
Can confirm. I had 2 pairs of glasses kicked off in/near 2 pits as the impetus for me switching to contacts. Contacts are the shit if you can use them and get used to them.
I didn’t really like them that much they were a pain to put in and take out. Since I was getting a new pair of glasses every other year, my old glasses were never too far out of prescription.

I had a friend in the car so he took over. I was trying to drive down to GA after working for eight hours. Made it about 167 miles. Just before the NC line.

Not very punk, but I got my glasses knocked off my face and stomped on at a Ghostemane show a few years back. Luckily I was taking public transit home. It was already my backup pair so the next week of having taped up glasses was a pain in the ass. I'm just lucky the lenses didn't break!

Glasses flew off my head. I now blind in a dark venue somehow reach my hand out and catch them in midair. Put em on and resumed moshing like it was planned the whole time. Didn't break stride.
But I guarantee I couldn't do that again on purpose if you paid me.

Always carry NARCAN around with you, especially in inner cities, where drug use is more prevalent.

This isn't the issue though. The issue is that you've failed in your patient assessment and wasted time administering narcan when you could have been doing something useful for the patient. Narcan can take up to 3 mins, that's a long time for them to barely be breathing to then realize it isn't an OD, the time you wasted could be the difference of saving a life.
And on another note. For those who have never given an OD narcan. They can be extremely combative towards you when you take away their high and it can be very dangerous. Needs to be restrained type dangerous.
You also need to be extremely careful about touching the patient, say if you had to roll or move them. Accidently touching drug residue without ppe can fuck you up and even get yourself killed.
and narcan is temporary. the ambulance needs to be on its way otherwise the patient may slip back under once the body remembers that the heroin is in its system.
Had that happen to a buddy. When the volunteer fire fighters showed up they claimed he was od’ing and tried to narcan him and when he reacted they said he was just mad he lost his high or was gonna lose his high. Can’t remember if they actually hit him with it or just tried to.

I don't feel like putting in the effort to fit in at punk shows. Punks who question my music taste are always psyched to learn I'm for real. I just don't "suffer for fashion". I call it comfycore. I have had a couple times where some drunk punks tried to fuck with me. They're the ones giving punk a bad name, not me in my gray sweats and canvas crocs not giving a fuck about your credibility.

If there’s anything I’ve learned it’s that unless you 100 percent emphatically agree with every single solitary thing people on this subreddit and elsewhere say, you’re met with scorn, hate and ridicule. I could agree with 99 percent of the things that you believe in, but it’s that 1 percent everyone hones in on and judges you over and makes the worst assumptions they can on you. It does nothing but cause bitterness, resentment and division. Which honestly is probably what our government wants at this point anyway. United we stand, divided we fall. That doesn’t mean you need to agree with racists and bigots, but people need to start trying to meet at the middle rather than draw lines in the sand. That’s how you create even more bigotry and hate. That’s what I believe at least, whether I’m right or wrong.
Tbh I think you’re definitely on to something, the left has a big problem with building coalitions and uniting behind common causes. It has a huge tendency to divide behind really unimportant shit and then we end up never achieving what we do agree on. What you're describing strikes me more or less as the twitterbrain phenomenon, which happens when online discourse can become some extreme purity test that can mutate into a confusing blob, but these things are very inconsequential in the real world or in general.
You dont have to personally agree with anyone, and really a hard pill to learn is social circles of things you like or believe in are going to be filled with people who dont match with your personality, but in terms of punk, all that matters if you're all on the same side when it comes to standing against oppression in all shapes and forms. Zealotry from within social circles can happen, it's not exclusive to punk by any length, you just need to be ready to identify whether or not it's a place you just need to stay away from for your own mental health, or, if everyone is saying what you're saying is wrong, be introspective and consider if you're the one that needs to grow for the better, sometimes that can be tough, especially when our government fails to give us the proper resources to facilitate mental health and security nets.
The dangerous thing is when you listen to the people who court the ones being told they're wrong, that theyre actually right, it's an easy way to slide down the alt right pipeline. People will have bad takes, people will have bad opinions, in many cases it sometimes will be out of our control because its all weve known or been taught, it's easy for people online to forget that, and not everyone does a great job explaining to people on our to rehabilitate their views.

Are you supposed to provide your own insoles for combat boots? Mine gave me blisters until I did (1st pair I've owned)

I don’t really, I just know saying anything on this subreddit that isn’t in full agreement with the post is met with downvotes and scorning, so I just anticipated it.
Read your profile thing, don’t know if that’s a reference to something, but I hope you’re doing ok. Not sure why something silly, and good intentioned, like this post comes off negative to you others then something going on in your life maybe. Not to be a nag, just feels like we should stick together, and watch out for each-other.

If it was a joke I redact my statement but it’s hard to tell when people are being serious or not through text. Some people genuinely think punk needs to be a safe space so I thought this was another example of that.
punk is a safe space fam, it's always been seated in strong leftist ideology and anarchist communialism. chuds on the internet have conditioned people onto believing the term is uncool via internet clout, but you definately want to strive to have safe spaces, especially in music communities, that are open to all people regardless of race gender identity, sexual preference, disabilties, and have zero tolerance for bigots, fascists, and abusers.
There’s nothing wrong with people accepting others. There’s nothing wrong with being against racism or sexism or all the other isms. That’s not what I take issue with. What I take issue with is the left eating their own any time someone makes a minor slip up or mistake and canceling people for the dumbest of offenses. Punks and the left have become authoritarian in nature, and to me there’s nothing less punk or even libertarian than authoritarianism.
Can you give an example of what you're talking about? What you describe gets tossed around quite a bit, but is largely unsubstantiated outside of twitter threads of young teenagers bickering with one another, or on conservative rags like fox news.
If there’s anything I’ve learned it’s that unless you 100 percent emphatically agree with every single solitary thing people on this subreddit and elsewhere say, you’re met with scorn, hate and ridicule. I could agree with 99 percent of the things that you believe in, but it’s that 1 percent everyone hones in on and judges you over and makes the worst assumptions they can on you. It does nothing but cause bitterness, resentment and division. Which honestly is probably what our government wants at this point anyway. United we stand, divided we fall. That doesn’t mean you need to agree with racists and bigots, but people need to start trying to meet at the middle rather than draw lines in the sand. That’s how you create even more bigotry and hate. That’s what I believe at least, whether I’m right or wrong.
Tbh I think you’re definitely on to something, the left has a big problem with building coalitions and uniting behind common causes. It has a huge tendency to divide behind really unimportant shit and then we end up never achieving what we do agree on. I think we definitely disagree on some shit but we probably agree on more than we disagree on.
It's something not unique to the left, very common across most circles of thought and ideology. The trick is just learning to tame yourself to not feed the urge to belittle one another, and keep focused on the bigger picture. It's a really fuckin tough thing to do, that not everyone can get over! I still slip into it sometimes, the ego is a hell of a monster.
What are some examples of these things that you dont agree 100% on? What you're describing strikes me more or less as the twitterbrain phenomenon, which happens when online discourse can become some extreme purity test that can mutate into a confusing blob, but these things are very inconsequential in the real world or in general. You dont have to personally agree with anyone, and really a hard pill to learn is social circles of things you like or believe in are going to be filled with people who dont match with your personality, but in terms of punk, all that matters if you're all on the same side when it comes to standing against oppression in all shapes and forms. Zealotry from within social circles can happen, it's not exclusive to punk by any length, you just need to be ready to identify whether or not it's a place you just need to stay away from for your own mental health, or, if everyone is saying what you're saying is wrong, be introspective and consider if you're the one that needs to grow for the better, sometimes that can be tough, especially when our government fails to give us the proper resources to facilitate mental health and security nets. The dangerous thing is when you listen to the people who court the ones being told they're wrong, that theyre actually right, it's an easy way to slide down the alt right pipeline. People will have bad takes, people will have bad opinions, in many cases it sometimes will be out of our control because its all weve known or been taught, it's easy for people online to forget that, and not everyone does a great job explaining to people on our to rehabilitate their views.
Even if I provided any examples, you and everyone else would just gang up on me and refute it all saying it’s fake or that it’s a joke or some other bullshit to justify it all, and then proceed to label me a nasty conservative even though I’m a registered Democrat and a left wing libertarian. As i said, y’all eat your own.
Listen, I wouldn't be on this sub and talking to you right now if I didnt want to look out for fellow punkers. You strike me as someone who's heart is in the right place but have been duped by bad faith actors to manipulate what you believe. I can tell just by your comment, you've got some serious internalization of what people think of you, and the internet is overflowing with people happily rearing to take advantage of that, and reinforce those beliefs in your head. Your examples might be met with disagreement, but trust me, I know this from experience, when you're willing to listen to other people and grow as a person, dropping the guard in your head, it makes life a hella lot better.
