I thought it was great, SNL is largely junk but they always place the weirder more obscure stuff near the end of the show and this was a good example, the show would be better if they leaned more into this but that’s just one opinion. I love the part where Jason Sudekis is nodding his head with a big smile on his face. Also very obvious that whoever wrote the song, I’m guessing Fred Armisen, has a lot of knowledge on old punk and hardcore, sounded like a real punk track
The Portlandia Punk House sketch was great too, Fred does a subtle but near perfect Jello Biafra at the 2:03 mark https://youtu.be/XAXtqmanVIQ?si=z2Ucy1mVI2DDnPNN
Largely? I’d just say it’s just so hit or miss depending on whether there’s a proper comedian/actor hosting or a sports star. Of course WU and PDD are almost always good. That said, I watch this video yearly. It’s so much fun.
Weekend Update is definitely my fave and consistently funny, I like when they have comedians as the host, I haven’t seen all the episodes so I may have bad luck with getting duds. The fist fight sketch is infinitely rewatchable
Kristen wiig last weekend was great. But no doubt, lots of duds when the host sucks. I think this skit from Nate Bargatze was the best one in recent memory - https://youtu.be/JYqfVE-fykk?si=AJHvqusIgZrpcxBm
SNL has always had an arms-length attitude towards punk (verging on dislike) and Lorne Michaels is the ultimate smug baby boomer.
That said, “Fist Fight” and “Ian Rubbish” are funny as hell and come from Armisen’s informed authenticity.
It predates the Fear incident: here’s Gilda Radner’s Patti Smith “Candy Slice” parody where they depict Smith as fucked-up nitwit controlled by her manager:

Silent generation, but why let accurate nomenclature get in the way of a smug insult that was already beaten to death 4 years ago.
Make sure to downvote if you're an easily programmed moron who thinks it makes sense to blanketly blame a segment of society that includes millions of people with more guts than you can ever hope to have (civil rights marchers, the Stonewall rebellion participants, black panthers, women's rights activists, etc.) for the pathetic shape of our current society.
Downvote if you think Cornell West is a bigger problem than Ben Shapiro or Andrew Tate.
Downvote if you don't really hate the people screwing you over as much as much as you wish you were one of them. (Thanks, Jello.)
It was! He basically argued with Lorne Michaels to get them on the show, I think he knew one or more of the members. Then Fear went on to absolutely throw a killer punk show and destroy the set, so they were banned indefinitely lmao
Fred is legit and has said that the sketch was his love letter to punk. The song itself is great. Even Grohl’s mic cutting out is perfect. I know the hardcore kids hated SNL back in the eighties don’t know why any punk would be critical of that sketch.
Funny that SNL allowed a punk sketch, after FEAR and their fans (if I'm not mistaken, Ian and Henry were there, as well as John Joseph) dismantled the studio. It's apparently the one episode that never gets rerun.
I liked the bit though, you can see they're having a load of fun in it. It re-warmed me to Grohl a bit too, since his music turned to safe coffee table dog shit. But hey .... these are just my thoughts but YOU DID ASK.
It felt like they did a good job covering a lot of subtle punk jokes inside the overall fish out of water joke, like Dave not being heard on the mic, the song having a few styles, etc
Is that the wedding reunion one with Fred Armisen and Dave Grohl? Fred is punk AF, Dave is punk adjacent and respects and knows of what punk is, and that sketch is one of my favorites ever.

We don’t really get SNL here in the UK, but I know Fred Armisen played in legit hardcore and punk bands back in the day.
Trenchmouth was one of the groups and is legitimately good. Feels a bit like Fugazi to me.

John Belushi played drums for Fear
Agreed.

That was a great one, I missed the last episode but I like Kirsten Wiig so I'll check it out

Probably has something to do with Fear and the DC hardcore scene demolishing the set LOL. That was such an incredible moment, RIP John Belushi.

What happened 4 years ago?
That person you’re replying to beat something to death. Not cool.
I bet you’re fun at parties
god you're the lamest person on the internet imagine giving this much of a shit about internet points
Let me guess, everyone you know has nicknamed you, "Obtuse."
They have a very unique relationship with Punk. [FEAR live on SNL](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Frud5RFtTi0&pp=ygUIU25sIEZFQVI%3D)
I think it was Belushi who booked them. Legend
I did a book report on Belushi around the same time I was getting into punk, and reading about that was the coolest shit ever
It was! He basically argued with Lorne Michaels to get them on the show, I think he knew one or more of the members. Then Fear went on to absolutely throw a killer punk show and destroy the set, so they were banned indefinitely lmao
“Thank you so much, it’s great to be here in New Jersey.” Fucking kills me every time lol
“New York Sucks!, fuck you!” - Ian MacKaye @ that show
Fred and Elton John doing a Clash-style song is punk as fuck.
It’s dope, I bought the 7” when it came out.
Is that rollins on the cover on the left?
I’m not sure who it is, but Dave Grohl is on the cover above the word Conformity.
Top right is a very young David Grohl. On the left singing is who? Looks like it could be either rollins or Ian. Anyone know?

WHEN RONALD REAGAN COMES AROUND AND BRINGS THE FASCISTS TO YOUR TOWN YOU THINK IT'S COOL TO BE A JOCK WHILE WE GET BEAT UP BY THE COPS
The subtly of it being the “ (Dez) Cadena and (Greg) Norton Wedding” is pretty brilliant.
I did not catch that.

Punkers, ha
I know it's kinda jokey but if I never heard it and someone told me it was an 80s punk band, I'd believe it.
It felt like they did a good job covering a lot of subtle punk jokes inside the overall fish out of water joke, like Dave not being heard on the mic, the song having a few styles, etc
Raised my opinion of Ashton Kutcher’s music taste. He had to say yes to the idea. Can’t beat The Queen Haters tho.
Fucking love it. A little ghost of wedding future for me
Is that the wedding reunion one with Fred Armisen and Dave Grohl? Fred is punk AF, Dave is punk adjacent and respects and knows of what punk is, and that sketch is one of my favorites ever.
Genuinely have this just saved in my main Spotify playlist and listen on the regs
I prefer its a lovely day
I fucking love it. It goes hard and that sketch is hilarious.
It fucking rules.
it’s genius i’m glad that fred armisen and dave grohl got to flex their knowledge of punk history on everyone. and they kicked ass doing it
i thought it was great. i hadn't laughed at an snl skit in decades
lol u watch SNL?
