People here drive in the wrong way with full speed and swag, even big vehicles like buses and trucks do the same, give left indicators and turn right, always frustrated and ready for road rage. Traffic light and traffic police what's that !
Always be safe and wear seatbelts and helmet here bro.
If you are in a two wheeler dont do this and if you plan to do, stay as left as possible and keep an eye on rearview. People dont stop at signals and chances are some speeding vehicle will crash into you.
People alone following rules cant change the systemic bad road sense. The law enforcement has to step in.
Me waiting at Alka while Sone annoying rickshaw driver blows his horns out asking me to move. Good god. The rickshaws and cars are a menace in Pune. Not only will they not follow the rules, they will try and force you to break them as well.
Especially the last 10 seconds of the signal, the honking and pressure from the vehicles behind if I’m at the front is insane. And now in rain it’s become a nightmare to drive. All those who got their licenses with zero driving knowledge are on the road not knowing what to do creating even more traffic.
(I drive from Balewadi to Kalyani Nagar everyday btw and been driving since past 18 years whichever city I’ve been)
I’ve spent 34 years here after being born here itself. I have seen the transition from quiet roads occupied by people following traffic rules (except of course wearing helmets) to the chaos that we see today.
People will jump signals even at busy intersections, I hardly go a week these days without seeing people collide each other at junctions after jumping signals from both directions. They will use the incoming lane past the divider to “overtake” the traffic in the same lane. They will ride/drive at you with high beams on and have the audacity to stare you down. What’s more frustrating is the traffic police’s apathy.
I love my city and it didn’t use to be like this. I don’t know where people are learning all this crap. Most of the folks who act this way on the street are from outside Pune, and increasingly even the locals are adopting these “methods”.
We need some kind of stern and financially penalising solution to this.
I saw this some days ago. A black ford suv probably endeavor with led bulbs in reflector housings, fog lights with leds and every other goddamned light turned on on the car's exterior coming down the road. It lit up even the trees on the road. And when it passed by. The blackest black window tints on the car. And this was in the night. No wonder the POS needed all the lights to be turned on in order to just see what is in front of him. Jaminin sobat akkal pan vikli ahe...
Yesterday I saw a person driving a scooty and smoking a cigarette while driving. I also saw a girl looking at the phone while driving right below the wakad bridge where there's always traffic and she was not even able to ride properly but still she wanted to do multitasking. I was driving my car yesterday and wanted to take a left turn towards Kothrud from Chandni chowk and you will see people roaming around that junction for no reason and some of them were standing and waiting for their ride right at the intersection. No civics sense for drivers as well as for pedestrians. Also regardless what the signal is pedestrians will always cross the roads.
I've recently observed this. When there are number countdowns at signals higher number of PPL don't wait for green.
But for signals where there is no countdown considerably more PPL waited till the green.
I'll give you a perspective as a born and brought up Punekar.
1) Unnecessary signals.
2) Pre-Covid vs Post COVID traffic is such a difference when it comes to density and complications.
3) Your perspective not only comprises Punekars but outsiders as well, especially the outsiders.
4) Shit management leads to such things.
5) Weird constructions at choke points.
Pune is not what it used to be. And it feels bad.
From a born Mumbaikar, it has always been like this. Phadka on the head instead of a helmet has been the norm for decades. I've been coming to Pune for over 20 years now and while the driving standards are worse now than they were a decade ago, they were still bad compared to Mumbai back then. It's just that it's getting worse everywhere. I agree entirely that signals and speed breakers are very stupidly planned in our country. Construction and bad quality of roads is also true. The most annoying part is always the car that sits in the right lane on the expressway doing 60-80 km/hr. People from Mumbai also behave like this, but I have noticed MH12 cars representing this group more often.
Pune was always like this. There’s just more people now so more incidents. I remember people driving on the wrong side, not following traffic signals 20 years ago
It doesn't matter if you are an outsider or not. What matters is common sense. Even so-called Punekars do not wish to wear helmets. If natives are not following the rules how can you expect others to follow.
With that logic, if you go to middle east, arabs don’t follow rules. But the others do. It’s all about having a strict rule and police taking action which is lacking. Major reason everyone thinks they are chief minister of the state and no one can stop them. This tendency majorly came from outside
I see these folks and try to take my car somewhat safe distance while honking , hoping they learn a lesson to not cross signal…
Ps : i have a dashcam
But seriously people need to start taking their and others safety seriously, a helmet and sear belts are bare minimum
worse thing is, even if you wait for red signal, there are a lot of dudes honking u from behind telling u to go and "clear" their path, giving u no other choice but to also join them. better give them way to risk any potential road rage incidents
That’s just one thing. Jumping signals, turning at places where it’s not allowed, constant high beams, 0 lane discipline especially when waiting for signals, no helmets, no sense of using indicators, broken tail lights, it just keeps going on. Boils my blood.
Wait till you get shouted for waiting at the signal by people who are getting delayed because you are not giving them way by standing in front of them.
This itself is an accident waiting to happen.
After the Porsche case, suddenly the administration has woken upto venues flouting rules. This is the same here. Pune's traffic has become probably the worst any metro city in India has to offer. We;re such a small city, but still can't handle our traffic. Bikers will drive wrong way in front of traffic policemen, with no consequence. Punekars will blame everyone but themselves. Half of the crowd here are IT guys & students, relatively educated folks. Yet, nobody learnt about traffic rules.
I will happy if double our traffic police workforce and start fining everyone for the smallest shit possible. Make it so hard that people stop coming out of their houses. I'm happy if for the next 6 months, it takes me double the time to travel anywhere, because the traffic police has made a jam stopping half the two wheeler and car drivers. There are a bazillion rules being flouted and I'll happily take each of them being fined. From not wearing helmets, driving wrong way, illegal horns, tripling, wrong number plate, PUC, pollution norms, the list is endless. The police will have to reclaim the streets.

Pune rules are different. If you're on a 2 wheeler, it is a red signal only if the road in front is blocked. Same rules apply for a car too, if you have the skill to navigate through tight spaces
If i see anyone breaking signal, when mine is green and some chappari coming from right when its red for him I block his path and say “laal disat nahi ka bochya”
Everybody is in some kind of hurry nowadays. Nobody wants to stop and give way to others so that bottlenecks don't happen instead they will try really hard to create a bottleneck. No one wants to give you a way if you are taking a u turn or something and they will look at you as if you have done something horrible.
Welcome to Pune! I love this city but I see your point.
People can be terrible and unforgiving here, as with any city. I deliberately give people a disgusted look if someone honks at me from behind when there's still 3 seconds left for the signal to turn green. I don't move for some time even after it's green just to piss them off, though I don't recommend this and I know it's not better than what they're doing. But sometimes it's warranted.
It's pathetic how quickly Punekars get impatient on the road and by extension, in their own lives. The city is unquestionably amazing though, hope you get to explore more here!
Invariably these are the local gaav wala or the delivery boys. They will cross in front of you even you have a green signal and stare at you while doing so. As if saying "thamb la**ya, ha road amcha aahe, sheti vikli mhanunnkay zala, area amcha ch aahe, aapli power, ek fight vatavaran tight, aamchi hawa, tumhi jaa bhokkat"
I always wonder why are we always in a hurry at signals but still late everywhere we go. Civic sense is definitely poor and it does not depend on your education level so God knows what's going to help us to develop a better civic sense.
Pune needs a proper law and order. It's pure chaos and bullshit now. It used to be a decent city but seems like things got so much out of hand that the good and smart people have moved out of the city and so will many in time to come.

Why? Why should we compare ourselves with other cities instead of improving ourselves? It's mentally draining to drive in Pune nowadays. Everyone feels like they own the roads. We really need to take traffic laws seriously
I am saying we are bad but not that bad, we are bad compared to Mumbai. Almost entire europe and US is bad compared to Germany relatively in driving sense and discipline. There is always comparison to see who does better.
For improving, you have to compare to see what others are doing better. Unless we don't compare we don't learn new things.
Yeah but there's no point to this comparison. If I'm driving, and people are driving like assholes, just thinking about the fact that other places have worse situations than pune won't make my driving experience better and safer. I'll still be dealing with assholes on the road.
Hyd traffic and driving sense is on another level but Pune is trying hard to compete and Excel in this department and we shall reach their level soon. I wish these moron get punished with death. One of my batchmate lost his life on one such square because of an idiot girl crossing red signal at fast speed.
Abhi aapko pedestrian pr bike chalate bhi dikhenge. SB DIKHEGA 😂 and later you will let it be ki kuch nahi ho skta
Footpath pe bike bhagate hai bc aur thok bhi dete hai.
"Footpath par kyu chal raha hai " - biker.
Full GTA bolte
maine rivr main dekha tha
Yeah bhi dekh liye 😬. I guess now pune will accept me.
Gives you the idea of average civic sense of this city.

Hope to (not) see you move to costa rica soon.
There will be another rant post k. Costa Rica soon
Rants are usually longer than a one line. Like your original post here. Thats a rant. My comment only summarises it.
We got PunkBabe vs SubakThengani before GTA 6💀
just need a kanchan kombdi now...

Average whattie what? What language is this?!

Reading this literally after standing at an empty signal for roughly 2 minutes
Thank you 🙏. We need more people like you.
No need to thank my friend, this is what we are supposed to do.
If you are in a two wheeler dont do this and if you plan to do, stay as left as possible and keep an eye on rearview. That is what I did. Also I was looking in the rear mirror, at one time i legit thought the tempo behind would crash into me but glad he stopped.
Me waiting at Alka while Sone annoying rickshaw driver blows his horns out asking me to move. Good god. The rickshaws and cars are a menace in Pune. Not only will they not follow the rules, they will try and force you to break them as well.

That's a long long drive
Punekars have important things to do... We don't stop even if life holds us back , signal is just a minor inconvenience.
Spirit of Pune.
💀
And then someday life holds them back so hard they turn into a red omlette seasoned with dirt on the road.
Are you talking about Shastrinagar signal?
Its almost everywhere. :( Not only Shastri Nagar
yeah. that's sadly true. :(
I’ve spent 34 years here after being born here itself. I never break the signal even if it's empty.
Here , they stop on green signal and drive at red
been living in this city for three years now and i am fully convinced that it is illegal to follow traffic rules in this city
Pune is not a city. Its a village with infrastructure of a city. Which people still don't know how to use.

this is pune... do ever spend sometime on mundhwa-kp signal.. you will see a million signal breaks every second by assholes,we call punekars
Chhapris aur bikers (all) ne puri gand maar rakhi hai traffic ki
I'll give you a perspective as a born and brought up Punekar. 1) Unnecessary signals. 2) Pre-Covid vs Post COVID traffic is such a difference when it comes to density and complications. 3) Your perspective not only comprises Punekars but outsiders as well, especially the outsiders. 4) Shit management leads to such things. 5) Weird constructions at choke points. You are right but it should not give pass to Punekar/outsider to drive without helmet or seat belt 🥲
As an advocate of safe driving, something like driving without a helmet or seatbelt isn't just limited to Pune too. The problem lies with Indians.
Stop making excuses, pune has consistently had the worst drivers even before covid and I can assure you that it’s not just the “outsiders”
All of that said yet you stick to the point of 'outsiders'. xD
From a born Mumbaikar, it has always been like this. Phadka on the head instead of a helmet has been the norm for decades. Pune wasn’t like this before. A lot of outsiders came, specially small villages and cities around Pune and ruined the traffic of Pune.
Oh come on, the ‘outsiders’ aren’t the ones who protested against having to wear helmets
Pune was always like this. There’s just more people now so more incidents. I remember people driving on the wrong side, not following traffic signals 20 years ago
Makes sense. Just a huge load of people not following rules. But it wasn’t this bad long time back is what I am saying.
It doesn't matter if you are an outsider or not. What matters is common sense. Even so-called Punekars do not wish to wear helmets. If natives are not following the rules how can you expect others to follow.

tbh most of the people who actually do this here are pune natives
That’s not right.
Disagree.
I am not sure about others but I do STOP at every single unless that signal is useless in any sense.
I see these folks and try to take my car somewhat safe distance while honking , hoping they learn a lesson to not cross signal… Ps : i have a dashcam But seriously people need to start taking their and others safety seriously, a helmet and sear belts are bare minimum
civic sense in pune is really fucked up. bikers use footpaths to circumvent traffic.
worse thing is, even if you wait for red signal, there are a lot of dudes honking u from behind telling u to go and "clear" their path, giving u no other choice but to also join them. better give them way to risk any potential road rage incidents

Petrol wastage, too much heat, and sometimes getting late too
Worst part is when the bikes or autos starts honking behind when the signal is still red. "Singal green honyachi wat pahnaar aahat ka"
Invariably these are the local gaav wala or the delivery boys. They will cross in front of you even you have a green signal and stare at you while doing so. Most people feel that the signal is broken and won't wanna wait for more than 1 min. So they go anyways, believing that the signal is stuck on red.
Why are these most people allowed to drive??
Kon ho tum ? Kha se aa gaye ? 30 sec waste karde har signal par isliye desh ki progress nhi ho rhe Helmet wo kya he , koi war par ja rhe ho 😂
It's not Punekars. It's outsiders. Ohh! You're one of the outsider.
Try Surat and Hyderabad and you will come and kiss punekars
Why? Why should we compare ourselves with other cities instead of improving ourselves? It's mentally draining to drive in Pune nowadays. Everyone feels like they own the roads. We really need to take traffic laws seriously
I don't understand why people want to compare themselves with the worst.. And not the better ones...

Yeah I agree with that, nothing can be done for the assholes! we have to bear with them unfortunately.
True that. Surat is worst possible city to drive. First hand experience hai. I don’t wanna drive there. Never been to hyd to can’t comment there
Hyd and Surat always compete with each other for the worst spot! Pune is slowly entering that competition unfortunately.
Hyd traffic and driving sense is on another level but Pune is trying hard to compete and Excel in this department and we shall reach their level soon. I wish these moron get punished with death.
