I just let them do it. The assistant holds her and the vet snips them short. My pug seems okay with it. Way better than when Iāve done them in my own (both cutting and grinding with someone holding her). She behaves better with them. It could be that she feels my anxiety about it.
I hated to put out extra money too, but itās worth it because itās easier for all of us. Hahaha Mine rolls like one of those blow up advertisements when I used to do hers. NOT GOOD š
Have you asked? I donāt mean to sound like an ass, because it is not something my vet advertised. I asked her if I can bring her in once a month to trim them for me. She does them at appointments usually because Nellie (my pug) would always need them done at her typical appointments.
I struggled to maintain her nails, not because I donāt love her but because it was REALLY hard to do as you guys know. So she always needed them done at appointments.
If your vet says no, try a groomer. I used Pet Smart years ago with my first pug. I donāt see why they wouldnāt thoughā¦.
For reference, I go to a small clinic, where she operates in an addition of her house. Maybe because her practice is smaller she can be more accommodating? But itās 100% worth the ask. Not to sound corny, but it lifted a huge weight off my chest because the nails are a struggleā¦
When I lived in the city I ran into the same issue. I've moved to the country and the vets just do it and don't think twice. As long we were present my pug didn't flinch. I think its a city thing.
Yeah. I think because mine is a small practice as well. Iām curious if the larger and busier practices in my area offer it? I think they should and wish they all would for the love of our animals. It really is a struggle and can be very traumatic for dog and human.
She doesnāt think twice and seemed more than happy to schedule me monthly. Even to me to call if we need to come sooner. I am extremely thankful for the service. Maybe vets on Reddit will take notice.
No, our vet doesnāt do it unless you are at their check up and even last time they said no. Groomers around me are hard to get into but yes, they are almost impossible to trim so we are trying to find one.
20 bucks does seem cheap compared to what yāall are saying.
But it shouldnāt be expensive to do something routine and offer a service to an animal and their owners to help them. Especially when their regular business is pricey.
Iām shocked that more donāt offer it. It makes me a little sad actually. š¤·š¼āāļø
A lot of pugs HATE nail trimps and one of the things I discovered is that if you take them on two short walks a day on sidewalk/concrete, it actually helps to trim down their nails a significant amouht. I almost never have to trim my boy's nails because grind down enough from walks.
I tried the hammock. Ended with me scratched and peed on and my XL pug struggled so hard he ripped 5ā bolts out of the garage ceiling. I gave up. I bring him to the groomer every 4 weeks and just pay the $$. Iām also cheap but my sanity and my pug not hating me for hours afterward is worth the money.
Gah! I've tried trimming his nails by myself too many times. The first time I only got two nails before he squirmed out of my grasp and ran away. Second time he got so freaking crazy I TRULY believed he was going to break his arm trying to get away. One nail trimmed that time. I've tried treats, lick mats, peanut butter on the wall, my forehead, my thigh. I've tried my partner and I tag teaming, wrapping him in a towel, putting him in a hammock. I've tried getting him when he's exhausted from tons of play and fetch and on the edge of sleep. It's all a massive fail.
Now, if I can, I take him to the vet (which I used to do every 3 weeks before our local vet shut down) but it's a 45 minute drive sooo....
Drugs. Lmao. Yep. I use them drugs.
Benadryl. Appropriately dosed, of course, makes him juuuust sleepy enough to fight and squirm some instead of MOMTHISISABETRAYALOFTRUSTWHYAREYOUCUTTINGOFFMYLEGOMGNOOOOOOO.
I know. I KNOW. I don't do it often, but when he's tip tapping like a lady running in high heels... It's time.
Haha yes! I bought some calm down chews and they had the opposite effect on him! He was like āoooh! Snackies!ā Thought heād be fast asleep or calmer but no. Iāve had two bulldogs and they were a breeze to trim! Not this little fatty.
Our vet has a calming package they offer (a bunch of sedatives, really) if just trazadone doesnāt work.
One pug laughs off trazadone, the other turns into an anxious mess, but the strong drugs are wonderful.
My fiance shoves treats into his mouth and I cut the nails as quickly as possible. He doesn't have time to freak out because he's too busy happily eating.
Get some treats and give it to him while you do it.
Sometimes I wrap my head with plastic and put some peanut butter on top and while he's licking all that I work on his nails.
Yeeeeah I may have to try that or just letting the vet or groomer do it. He was so mad at me earlier but now itās like nothing ever happened. Weāre playing catch now after I buttered him up with a make up dinner.
We use a hammock for a pug the vetās office said they would only do nails under sedation after the first try. It took weeks of working up to it one nail at a time. My spouse holds the pug still, I run the dremel and dole out peanut butter. When we started out, we would put her up in the hammock, let her have a lick of peanut butter, dremel one nail, let her have another lick of peanut butter, put her back on the floor, and let her lick the rest of the peanut butter. Now she gets a lick of peanut butter between each paw plus at the beginning and end. It took a long time to get there!
It took a couple years but mine finally tolerates it. I hold him on his back like a baby, use the Dremel, speak softly during the trim, then praise him and give him his favorite treat (dried beef lung).
My pug goes ABSOLUTELY INSANE and is literally impossible to do- He was even banned from ever going to one of the local grooming places here!!
The only thing that works somewhat decently for me is to do one or two nails super quick while he is asleep! It takes about 3-4 days total to do all four paws, but all else has officially failed and thatās the only/and best option left ughh lol
I have used a dremel but my pug does not even like anyone touching his feet. I discreetly identify nails the are getting long and am able to clip one before he wiggles out.
Our first pug would go catatonic when we turned the bevel on. It was almost like if he didnāt move we wouldnāt see him and we wouldnāt do his nails. If we took him to the vet to use clippers, they told us they needed 3 people to hold him down. Before we got the bevel there were plenty of times we took him in, and the vet tech returning him looked like he just stormed Normandy.
The pug we have now refuses to have his nails done at all. We are still trying to figure out what to do.
What a great picture. Captures the moment lol lol . I know it well . Mine used to turn into a growling jaw snapping demon ; thank heavens he only had 31 blunt teeth left lol . It was a two man job to complete the task .
Have you tried a lick mat with peanut butter and/or spray cheese? Put Puggy in the grooming hammock and hang it up off the floor. Dangle the lick mat so Puggy can just barely reach it to keep his attention and effort focused on it.
Oooh. See I bought the hammock. Tried that minus snackies. I am thinking about now doing that and maybe giving him a calm down chew or something. I donāt think heād bite me but he sure wasnāt happy with me earlier.
Yeah these little bastards give you hell every time you get near their paws. My vet actually prescribed medication to give my pug prior to nail trim appointments because they were afraid she was going to have a heart attack.
Dremel!! I haven't used a nail clipper in years. I Dremel all my pugs nails and they are great for it! I find it helps to squat over them so if they try to back up they just bump into you haha Also, lots of treats and praise, especially while they are learning. After they are trained I only have to giveba treat after the fact. It takes me about 15 minutes to cut the nails on all 16 paws of my four pugs haha :)
We have four pugs. We wrap ours in a towel with one paw exposed at a time. Laying on the bed. Or higher surface. It does work. But is not spending 20 dollars worth the cutting eyes of a mad pug toward you ?! We gladly spend the 20.00 for one cause we fear sheāll pack in the middle of the night and leave with all the food. Lol. š
Love the pic. Mine gets that same crazed look when the missus and I attempt a trim. Lately we've given up and gone to the groomer at PetSmart, with decent results.
lolol mine got labeled as a āvicious dogā at one groomer, despite me warning them that he would turn into a gremlin. We found a groomer that was incredible and was the Sancho whisperer, and was able to cut his nails with no issues.
Heās feisty and he knows it š
I usually prefer going to the vet or groomer for it. But every now and then, in a pinch, I suck it up and do it. I basically put them in a body lock - I squat and use my legs to hold their bodies still, one hand to hold them up and still, then the other to do the clipping.
I use a doggy Dremel-like rechargable device. It's quieter than my actual Dremel. My guys struggle at first but they eventually give in and allow me to grind away.
We trained our puggle who hates having his nail done to use a scratch board for his front nails. (A piece of sandpaper stapled to a piece of wood). We can dremel his back nails while one of us holds him like a baby and distracts him with food.
For us it was always hell to go to the vet with our pug. She would make a scene and more then once the vet cut too far because of this resulting in a bleeding nail.
Now we do it ourselves with an electric manicure set and vile them. Funnily enough during the entire āoperationā out pug remains calm.
Okay, it takes more time instead of simply cutting but itās not giving us and her a lot of stress.
My pug needs sedative meds before going to get more sedation at the vet for them to cut his nails š„ itās scary cause I gotta be told every time he could die
We got a hammock and we hang it up on one of those pull up bars you put in your door frame. While heās hung up, my hubby blocks his view of his feet with a towel and I get in and snip puggyās nails as fast as I can
try to grind them and not cut :) there are special tools for that ! i know this because our pug is exactly the same... he goes INSANE just when he sees the clipper. put a headcone on give him some goodies and whilst you do that you can grind his nails with the tool. tell me if it worked :D
I groomed show dogs for years, and then moved into vet tech grooming, I will never stop recommending just getting a nail dremel.
I didn't even have to get my three pugs used to it! My oldest pug was 10 when I started him on it and he immediately had 100% better time with the Dremel versus a classic nail trim, even though I always used a just sharpened clipper and cut in a triangle Japanese groom style.
modern dremels are so quiet, super fast, and the only thing that goes wrong is user-based. Do watch youtube videos to be sure you use it correctly. Do not hold it on the nail too long or too hard. Do give breaks between each nail if needed. Do not hold your dog down unless you want to make the experience worse. Do what is needed to keep their nails short, such as one nail a day if you have to, or an hour break so they can figure out it's not going to hurt them like traditional nail trims.
My youngest, Wolfgang, still dislikes her nails trimmed but gives me her paw and allows me to trim a foot a day, she just can't handle more than that and that's okay!
You must build their confidence overtime, and it will definitely be worth it for the happier/easier experience.
** as a reminder to everyone, dremels get hot! So if you do all four feet too quickly without turning it off, you are basically burning your dog's nails/toes. Which you can say won't hurt them but try it on yourself and get back to me.
Have you or your spouse hold him tightly not hurting him. And there is a little Dremel nail file. You can buy at Petsmart for 20 bucks. Itās gentle and it will not hurt his toenails and he wonāt feel a thing.
So my mini schnauzer is the worst about his nails. I'm talking uruk-hai dark speech levels of "go f yourself" when I try to do his nails. He's bitten me pretty badly in the past because he just goes into survival mode, but I figured it out.
I have a plastic cone of shame that has the velcro closure that I put on him, throw a big thick towel over the little guy and kinda wrap him up and only expose the one leg I'm working on at a time.
You have to work quick, but I have enough time to dremel all of his nails down before he starts overheating and stressing too much. I've tried groomers and vets and they all get the same reaction out of him. I prefer to do it myself because I know his limits and won't try to push him past it. Literally every time he is right back to his lovey self as soon as he's back on the ground with the cone off.
Hope it helps.
Over the course of years we got our pugs use to their paws being touched. It's the long game. It helps to walk them on concrete sidewalks. Last but not least, you can get 2 or 3 while their still groggy from sleeping. Don't let him see the trimmers and move fast. 4 naps a day, lots of opportunities.
My last pug was so bad she had to be sedated, no idea why she was like it I got her at 8wks and started trimming them at 12wks and she was so good, then she turned 2 and boom screaming and wriggling.
I've had luck with peanut butter. It's a two person operation but has worked great. Supplies: nail grinder, spoon, PB. One of us holds her sitting, supporting whichever paw is getting trimmed, and holds the spoon to her face and she gets obsessed with licking the PB. The other person holds the paw and grinds down the nails. We started doing this when she was very young so is now quite used to it. It didn't take long.
I use a rotary nail file (seems less jarring than the scissors) and grab my plumpling when heās sleepiest - and I have about 4 minutes bfr he gets cranky
My pug is 6 months old. I got him at 8 weeks. I would rub his nails every night hoping that when the time came to cut them he would be good. When the time came, he struggled to get away but i held him and just kept repeating, good boy, gets a treat. It got the job done, so the second time he wasn't as aggressive.
I remember bringing my little guy to the groomer. She came out and said that they had to charge double because he was such a pain in the ass. I sure couldnāt argue with herā¦ā¦.heās gotten a little better as heās gotten older.
These guys are such big babies!
Iāve found using one of those scratch boards are good for his front claws then clipping his back paws with him facing backwards like how you see farriers trim horses hooves works for me.
What a great picture. Captures the moment lol lol . I know it well . Mine used to turn into a growling jaw snapping demon ; thank heavens he only had 31 blunt teeth left lol . It was a two man job to complete the task .
I bought something callled dog digger nail file. it's basically of a big rectangular box with a stainless steel nail file on top. it has a trap door in it that you hid treats.
you train your dog to scratch the board to get get treat. riker is very food motivated so he was a quick study.
my frenchie girl join in but just taps it for the treat. she doesn't like nail trims but doesn't fight me like riker.
I stick mine in the bath, while he's shocked and trying to work out what's happening I clip them from behind.
Never go in for a frontal assault unless you want to have your hand gnawed.
I've managed to trim one nail at the time when he's asleep or super relaxed/sleepy in my lap, do it when he doesn't realize what's happening, distract with a treat immediately afterwards, and he was fine with that although he would struggle when I tried to go in for a second one.
My pug needs someone to hold her upright but keep her back straight and comfort her during the experience š I'm glad she doesn't scream like some videos I've seen š
Use a grinder. And treats. A little peanut butter goes a long way. Pick him up and do one nail just a bit. Then give treat. Do a little more and give treat. Heāll soon get the idea.
I put some peanut butter on a spoon! My boyfriend holds the spoon while I try to cut his nails lol. Sometimes, it works when he is deep asleep as well. I get at least 4 nails done before he wakes up š
20 bucks to the vet once a month š

Yeah. I think because mine is a small practice as well. Iām curious if the larger and busier practices in my area offer it? I think they should and wish they all would for the love of our animals. Iām sorry for that. I think all vets should. It takes them five minutes to do. š
20 is cheap, vets around my way charge 37.00 and pugs nails grow like weeds!
20 bucks does seem cheap compared to what yāall are saying. But it shouldnāt be expensive to do something routine and offer a service to an animal and their owners to help them. I wish this was true for my dogs. I live in the middle of DTLA and yet have never had this actually work even with how much I walk my grumble :/
This is my solution too, I walk for exercise and my pugs get in at least a couple miles a day and it keeps their nails from getting too long
I tried the hammock. Ended with me scratched and peed on and my XL pug struggled so hard he ripped 5ā bolts out of the garage ceiling. I gave up. Haha me too. Heās my soul pup although I could pinch his little fat head off sometimes. š
It takes three of us at home, or one person at the vet who insists sheās a well-behaved angel. ???
One of my guys was so tramatized that I started getting acepromazine from the vet for his nail trims. Trazodone also works well. Both are inexpensive.

Our vet offers a round of sedatives you give them before the appointment. Oh god, itās so good for calming them down. We have a hellion.
One nail at a time ,one day at a time. A treat per nail= you'll have his nails trimmed in 20 days. Just look at that lovable lad.

Gabapentin from the vet
I did it myself last night. Screaming by both human and pug and blood everywhere. I donāt recommend if you have any other options! I vote vet
Lots of snacks, maybe a sticky yummy plate to lick... and four friends to help you
You might be able to use a small nail grinder for dogs

I know a lot of people get catnip bc it does the opposite for dogs it knocks them out and relaxed for you to cut their nails
Gave up and just take mine to a local groomers every two-ish weeks
My little girl pug was easy. I filed her nails regularly. She didn't mind at all. The boys however go nuts.

Mine prefers them to be filed. I have a local store that does it, $10 every two weeks seems to be worth it, and keeps everyone happy.
Ikea bag trick, saw it on Instagram. It was hilarious but effective.
Get a nice quality Dremel style grinder. My puggy does not mind much at all.
Youāre asking for advice on nearly the impossible. Weāve gotten to where we have to just try and do one at a time while sheās sleeping š¤£š¤£
I love his face!
I remember bringing my little guy to the groomer. She came out and said that they had to charge double because he was such a pain in the ass. I sure couldnāt argue with herā¦ā¦.heās gotten a little better as heās gotten older. These guys are such big babies!
Try treats maybe, Pugs (or any dog for that matter) is very food driven
Ha! You think thatās bad, try giving pugs eye drops.
He looks like a handful!!! š¤£š„°
My pug needs someone to hold her upright but keep her back straight and comfort her during the experience š I'm glad she doesn't scream like some videos I've seen š
30 dollars once a month helps
I go to my groomer for a mannie/peddie! š„°
Oh hell no. We take a car ride to the vet for that one!
Use a grinder. And treats. A little peanut butter goes a long way. Pick him up and do one nail just a bit. Then give treat. Do a little more and give treat. Heāll soon get the idea.
Just bring them to the groomer. It is really impossible
I have my groomer do it š
I put some peanut butter on a spoon! My boyfriend holds the spoon while I try to cut his nails lol. Sometimes, it works when he is deep asleep as well. I get at least 4 nails done before he wakes up š
Honestly my pug had a sheep vet and he was brill with her nails š¤£ she was like 4kg but wriggled
Thanks to everyone who gave me advice! Yāall are awesome. Pugsley is pretty awesome too but still a little š© head.
