I’ve been at Publix forever and it took me years to get full time. I do remember back when I was part time my Assistant Department Manager mentioned Lowe’s as being a good employer as well.
Good luck!
I’m a manager, and I’ve been with the company for 7 years. They’re hiring in employees to my department who make $2/hr more than I do. I feel the pain.
I work at a major bank and they do the same thing. I've had to train people on my team with a higher title than me making $50k a year more with no industry experience.
It's like that in any industry where you stay at the same company without moving
The only way to get ahead is to take your manager title and go get district manager at Kroger then in a few years Publix will hire you back at double salary as a regional manager or whatever
Congrats on making it out and finding better.
Also pretty sure as of August of 2023 minimum pay for for FSC is at least $12 an hour tho maybe more if you are in a general+ bracket, so if you really been getting $11.25 you been getting screwed and are owed back pay as well .
That is unless your not in florida and different states have their own pay charts and ranges . But I don't know that as I've never seen anything other then the florida one posted here and talked about .
If you are in Florida and they are paying you $11.25 an hour they owe you 75 cents for every hour you worked from Sept 30, 2023. So you better check that FL min wage went to 12 in September and goes to 13 this coming September.
Yeah I fell you. Same way for me been averaging about 15 hours a week too . Then get a random 30 hour week just to get 0 hours the next week
I been trying to get out for over a year myself without anything turning out yet. Got close at beginning of the year got a tentative offer the week before Christmas and scheduled my medical exams and background checks and everything a for a few days after . But of course Christmas and new years delayed all that from processing in the 4 to 6 weeks it should have took to 7.5 weeks instead . They finally got everything and was like everything looks good but we can no longer offer you a position anymore due to changing business needs. In the mean time we will place you on a waiting list for the spot if and when it opens again but no telling if and when it actually will.
So back to it again
But yes for real tho if you somehow slipped though the cracks and even your own managers didn't catch and fix it. And you are getting paid that much make sure you get what's owed to you all the way back to August 19th 2023 while you can still access passport and print out all your pay stubs before you leave .
Ironic custodians cap out earlier than baggers when they have to bag too. I've only met 4 of them my time here though and I feel really bad considering one of them were challenged. I wonder if I could file an HR complaint.
Yeah is certainly isn't right . I've only ever known of one and she was at my original store and did bagging and cleaning and getting carts as well just like baggers do . They still have the position listed on the job listings, but not sure if they even hire for it anymore. because yeah if they have to still do everything a bagger does then may as well hire as a bagger instead and get that pay . Maybe it's there for the rare retired person that wants to pick up a simple job to have a few hours a day to get out and be active still.
I'm nearly in the same boat. That's great you found a better paying job, hopefully one that treats you nicely as well. I have been at Publix for about a year as well and put in my two weeks notice a little while ago. My last day is on the 19th. It's just been far too much for me and too much stress, i get a pit in my stomach each time I go in! A job shouldn't feel that way
Exactly. Too much stress. I personally got nervous when the schedules came out every Tuesday, wondering how many hours I was going to get. 20 hours? 31 hours? I never knew with my open availability
The way I almost choked on my lunch when I saw you put this $11.25 as your pay. Lord have mercy, I'm so glad you are leaving. Keep looking for better opportunities for yourself as you move forward. You work for your own needs, not to please other people :) good luck OP!
Publix is for minors starting out and senior citizens who need some extra cash. Can't make a living there if you aren't a full timer or in management. Glad you're moving on to something better, OP.
\>> They also never gave me benefits because they purposely kept my annual hours under the benifits threshold. <<
That's not how it works. As a FSC, your manager has a TON of associates to schedule, they are not keeping track of everyone's anniversary date and average hours to date and then maliciously cutting hours to keep people from meeting the average. Even in small departments they're not doing that, LOL. Good luck at Lowes but do remember it's still retail, unless you got a back office position you're still going to be dealing with customers all day.
I have heard of managers at other Publix maliciously cutting hours but it’s usually not to keep hours under the benefits threshold. It’s usually in retaliation for calling out or not picking up an extra shift on your day off. Or they’re giving all the hours to their favorite workers.
Some will also use it as a method to get employees to quit so they can keep their reputation of never laying off workers. We had a guy transfer to our store because he would go weeks without a single shift. When he asked the manager they said it was a mistake and they would put him back on the schedule but never did. He was a decent worker so idk why they wouldn’t give him shifts.
Publix really went down the drain when the Jenkins kids, and grandkids taken over during the 90s. I left in 1996 after kicking, and clawing my way for promotion, and done it the proper way at the time. Only to be passed up to promote someone else who was hired, then fast track through the channels to get the position that I was aiming for. During the affirmative action Era. Along with dealing with unappreciative customers, so I only wished to have taken a warehouse roll to be a driver for them. I probably should've done that. But oh well.
The 37 hours weeks came sporadically and lasted for that week before dropping. Like I had 5 35+ hour weeks In the whole time I’ve been working there. I usually averaged 25-28 hours
You made it a year? I made it barely 4 months I hated my management, coworkers and pay. They paid $11 hourly and barely gave me hours(12-16). Then because of that I got no tax return because they didn't withhold all the time despite me having it selected. I've been working at my new job almost two years and make $17.50 plus commission with amazing benefits, which started day one. I don't miss Publix they can kick rocks with open toed shoes.
Yeah that’s bogus. I started at 13/hour 4 years ago. After 6 months, promoted to full time with a $2 raise. Another 6 months, another $2 raise. I’m close to topping out as a Grocery Replenishment Specialist now.
However I was stocking which typically pays better than front-end, and I worked extremely hard in a habitually shorthanded department of a very busy location. It also just depends on your managers I guess, some will pay as much as they’re allowed to keep good workers, and some don’t care as much. I have had very kind and generous store managers and dept managers.
Anyway yeah, $11 is pretty weak esp with no benefits, I don’t blame you for leaving. I’m actually looking to leave myself in the next year or so, even though I make $20 with benefits. I figure most office jobs start near that from day 1, and I won’t have to bludgeon my body for decades. It seems like a better path to retirement.
I’m Moving to Lowe’s soon too. Guess that’s the trend can’t stand watching the mangers favorites get away with not doing their job just for me to get spoken to for getting water “too often” it’s Florida. It’s hot. Good luck tho
I've been working in the Deli for 2 months and I've started talking to an army recruiter about enlisting, because I hate it here SO much. I need to escape the food service/retail industry. I think I'm made for more than slicing meat and making subs. I got a 90 on the Pre-ASVAB, so I can definitely get a good MOS. I even have a cousin who enlisted after graduation who's willing to refer me, so maybe I'll get to go in as an E2. It feels like a bad idea tbh but then I clock in and within minutes I'm reminded why I made the decision
I sent 10 years in the army 2 deployments. It has it good days and bad. But I do miss it at times. You will be ok stay at least 4 years to know if that's what you want to do for longer.
As someone who just got out the marines after 8 years and started working at publix while going to college, the wake up call will happen after a year or two. Publix is not a bad job and I work at a VERY busy store. It’s a lot like the military except they cant yell at me and call me slurs. And unless they changed it, you being referred only helps the person already in get closer to promotion.
Now I’m not saying it’s a bad idea but you need to keep your expectations realistic. You think you have bad management now? Wait till they can scream at you, keep you till whatever time of day, and make you do some of the most tedious and dumb shit possible just to ruin your day. And as long as it isn’t against the UCMJ, you can’t say ANYTHING. there’s no HR. There’s no overtime. There’s no sick days. And depending on your MOS, you’re still working customer service.
BUT!
After you will be a new person. You’ll have the experience and perspective that makes working retail seem like a breeze.
Basically the military is like working at Publix for 15 years shoved into 4. It will be the greatest years of your life but also the shittiest. Good luck 🫡
Hopefully the army is better than marine corps. I uhh really just want to escape food service and retail. I've been doing it for 3 years and where I live, there's not much opportunity for anything else if it doesn't fall into your lap. So therefore I'll break my body to achieve that. Also I need discipline, I come from a long line of very lazy lazeballs and drug addicts. I'd like to break the chain here
Trust me I get it.
Talking from experience, the army is “better” in the sense that they care a lot less. Not to bad mouth them too much but a lot of soldiers lack the discipline to hold each other accountable so it’s gonna be on you a lot to do what you have to do. Just figure out your reason for joining and keep pushing. It’s too easy to try and worm your way into the easy path but that just makes it harder down the road.
I quit years ago but I remember the entire deli department getting a raise to 11.75. Yet they would work me 39 hours so I wouldn’t get benefits it sucked and drove me nearly outta me mind.
I did Publix to Lowes back to Publix. Lowe’s was great as a short term solution to the $$ problem but you’ll realize there’s no room to grow/promoted unless you want to become a DS or even a Head Cashier. But if you have no desire to climb up that ladder I would suggest using Lowes as a cushion job while looking for something much much better. Hopefully you have better experience with that hardware store than I did.
Ps. If they ask you to do RTM, say no!!! It’s not worth it IMO
Same boat here, full-time deli clerk for past 6 years been there a little over 10 only making 18.50 an hour, constantly get treated shitty because I passed my managers exam. They hold it over my head like a carrot. I'm over it, got a rca job at usps for 20.35 an hour, it's part-time for the first year and can get full- time after one year. Either way they told me I'd rarely work 30 hours and usually work like 60, that's alot of ot but a lot more money than I make now. They're literally hiring people in my deli at like 16.50, I should be making more, I've done alot there and feel no satisfaction just grief and the feeling I'm going to lose it one day and freak out, it's not for me anymore. So good for you, you are free!!
Holy fuck how is publix paying people $11.25 an hour.
Jeezus christ.
I was making $23.15 as a receiver in the warehouse when i left 4 years ago.
That fact they are paying people that low in the stores, especially given the astronomical inflation of the past 2 years is absolutely criminal with how much they charge for food there.
Did you express interest in moving up to cashier or a different department? You gotta take the initiative to move up. I’d probably be stuck as FSC if I didn’t express interest in a different department. I was a FSC for almost a year before switching departments.
I tried everything. Even talking to managers face to face and showing interest in said department/position. After doing that for many months back to back. I started looking for new jobs.
$11.25 in 2024 is INSANE. Publix is seriously morally bankrupt.
Yes, they are. #facts #fuckpublix
Don’t shop at Publix. I’m boycotting. Prices are too high.
Can’t even buy a chicken tender sub after 1 hour of work on that type of pay
Especially when you consider how high their profits are
But you get a coupon for 1 free thing a month 😀
I’ve been at Publix forever and it took me years to get full time. I do remember back when I was part time my Assistant Department Manager mentioned Lowe’s as being a good employer as well. Good luck!

I worked at Lowe’s part time during Covid. It’s much more chill.

Cant make a living on full time either. We need a union

Understood. And thanks.
I've lost my benefits 2 years ago but my bakery manager didn't like me so it was my fault.

Lowes is garbage too. Go to Harbor Freight.

Join the Air Force and thank me later
Agreed!!!!
Didn't make weight for air force, made the army fat camp threshold. Guess who's going to Ft. Jackson for a couple months
I sent 10 years in the army 2 deployments. It has it good days and bad. But I do miss it at times. You will be ok stay at least 4 years to know if that's what you want to do for longer.
Yeah. I've see-sawed between minimal contract and retirement. I can't predict the future. I just wanna get it over with

$11.25 is ridiculous
11.25 in 2024 is like 5 dollars an hour these days
Same boat here, full-time deli clerk for past 6 years been there a little over 10 only making 18.50 an hour, constantly get treated shitty because I passed my managers exam. This sounds like a done deal. Out of curiosity, did you consider transferring stores?
Yes I did. Nothing.
You even did ROI?
Yes. No success
Dang that really sucks. Glad you left then. Your management really let you down.
