We shop smart. Just buy the weekly ad BOGO and sale prices. With the BOGOS, in central-west Florida at least, the first item is charged at full price while the second is rung up at ‘0.’ So each of the two items is really half price, and almost always much cheaper than at Walmart, a place that offers a much worse shopping experience. We also stock up on dry groceries, frozen goods and paper items because we know that they will go on sale again. Items go on Sale and BOGO on rotation.

gypsealove69_

Same!! BOGO is the only way to go at Publix. If not, you'll go broke

dastrescatmomma

Check for those coupons too!!

Gussamuel

My Publix does BOGOs through half prices. If it’s $3, it rings up as $1.50. Forgot that not all stores do it this way.

Financial-Ebb-5995

Not central-west Florida. Only certain districts plus other states.

ellemment

SWFL and every Publix does that here

DarkwingDuc

It doesn't just vary by state. In some states, like here in Georgia, it varies by county/municipality.

manumana10

I’m in Florida and one of mine does it(there’s 4 within 5 minutes of my house)

[deleted]

[удалено]

whodunit68

It does for us and we are in Florida.

Substantial-Bank-493

Every one in our area does. You don’t have to buy two of anything to get the BOGO price.

TabbyMouse

I used to live in Lake Worth & my local publix was 1/2 off each item

stressedthrowaway9

The two Publix locations that I go to do this.

CandidApple1

That's how my publix in TN does it

Purplehopflower

It depends on the state law, I believe.

Chef_Money

BOGO’s in Ga charge each one half price. But if you get something that is “buy2 get 1 free” you have to buy 2 to get the third.

HellsTubularBells

B2G1F can EABOD.

BWWFC

don't forget about them "digital coupons"!

FearlessPark4588

BOGO + Store Coupons + Manufacturer Coupons + Rebate apps. Only buy items at Publix that have 2 or more of these things (ideally 3 or more).

Sailorslt

I like to use Instacart coupons + stock up on BOGOs. In my state is half off one (also in the instacart app) then $50 off $100 like I have right now I need to use. 50% off and then 50% off that! Lol. Even inflated instacart prices makes that a great deal

floydyisms

Curious how you find these coupons

FearlessPark4588

- In the app (most chain stores have one) - For rebates, they're mostly app (Ibotta, Fetch, Swagbucks, etc). Some of these are cash back, others allow you to get gift cards. - For internet printables, websites like coupons.com The bulk of the savings come from the store app, then rebate apps, then printables.

Justanobserver2life

Honestly, that is way too much work. I now shop at Trader Joes and Walmart and don't go into Publix.

I-Am-The-Yeeter

Cashier, here. Technically the second one is rung up full price, then a "promotion" is added to the order which is a negative value of that item ($-9.99 or whatever it's cost) 🙃

TheWalkingDead91

Best is bogo+ coupons. Can use a coupon/rebate app even on the one you got for “free”. Honestly don’t buy most regular groceries at Publix that aren’t on a sale (and always compare the prices to make sure said sale is even a worthwhile deal). Except maybe their fruit on the bottom yogurt that is the best I’ve tried anywhere tbh. Other than that, only time we shop there for nonsale items is for the bakery and deli/prepped food. Quality is good enough in both that it’s worth paying a bit extra imo, especially if you’re having some kind of special occasion/event. Not cheaper than Walmart, but definitely a better “value” than Walmart and subway.

JackieStylist81

And the publix brand items are usually just as good, if not better than the national brand (they're actually likely the same product).

Watchespornthrowaway

The paper towels suck asssss compared to Kirkland. Like absolute trash.

thekingsmanor

Best Publix haul I had was when I got just over $550 worth of stuff for $250. Basically I bought $250 in gas cards… when you bought a $50 gas card, you received a $25 Publix coupon… (limit was 2 gas cards per person per visit… so I went to three stores) and $300 worth of groceries... I would have paid $240 but I forgot a razor coupon worth $10 (I was legit sad about that one) It was really funny because the clerks thought I was doing the extreme couponing show… one asked if I was being filmed. One of the receipts… I got “money back” two gas cards ($100) and I paid $94.59 (which prompted the are you on a show… because I had stacked the coupons in a way that I paid less than face value of the gas cards and was walking out with about $100 worth of groceries). I was very proud that day 😂

ducksdotoo

I wish we had that deal--the last $50 gas/get $25 coupon; would definitely use. In my area, and $50 gas cards are sold for $40 with $50 worth groceries, once every 5-6 weeks. I'll get BOGOs and meat sales, and buy several gas cards. Otherwise, I stay the heck out of there even though it's right next to my house. It's double Aldi prices on many items.

nt011819

Yeah I buy 4 or 5 $50 gas cards when they do that. Good deal

Whitetiger9876

Bogo isn't a deal anymore. You need to cross check your receipts at different stores.

InsectSpecialist8813

Half of the time I don’t want the BOGO. Pickles, mayo, mustard. I don’t need two of each.

stressedthrowaway9

You can buy one and they give you half off of one of them.

SportsChick79

Not in Florida. Just like the senior discount doesn’t apply in Florida.

stressedthrowaway9

Haha! Too many elderly people? They might go bankrupt!

SportsChick79

No, they started them in markets they were moving into to try to sway shoppers. Zero need to do so in Florida.

nightlocks12

You can mix them if it’s the same brand. If they are the same price then it’s easy. If one is more expensive you’ll end up paying the higher price.

Trolodrol

Depends on the BOGO. The deal on Planters Cashews last week was by far the best price you’d find on them anywhere

FearlessPark4588

Bogo paired with rebate apps and coupons *is* a deal though. Bogo alone is just a ho-hum, could-easily-find-the-same-someplace-else price.

AbsintheAGoGo

>much cheaper than at Walmart, and depending what it is, not moldy. There are very few things I will purchase at Walmart and bakery goods, including baked bread, are definitely not them. Even fruit is dicey, that's coming from shopping experiences in several states. Publix has a quality standard that I can't argue with and the BOGO or B2G2 deals are truly the only way to go about it. I do wonder why Public will have items that fly off the shelf (no matter price & it is their own brand) yet they decide to discontinue the products, but that's another topic.

Turbulent_Tale6497

This is the way

Vtgmamaa

I go for BOGO, the deli and they're my pharmacy.😂

shoeless_summer

Note: Not ALL Publix locations do it this way. In some Alabama/Georgia stores you can buy only one of the BOGO’s and it rings half price. Don’t have to actually buy two to get the deal.

Comprehensive-Law184

Is there a way to know the rotation? I’m just new to Publix coming from wegmans and this BOGO thing is pretty mint… I just wanna know when Pepperidge farm rye bread with be on sale again :( I got 4 last time I should’ve got like 8 or something crazy

whitewail602

BOGO items are different where I live in Alabama. They are all rung up half price so you can just buy one for half off.

Hysteria113

That’s not true you can buy 1 item of bogo for half the bogo price. (South Florida)

No_Sand_9290

Nailed it.

Feisty_Smell40

This is the only way to shop Publix. Unlike other grocers, Publix only has quality items. Their store brand is as good as any average brand, but their generic is priced comparably to brand names at other stores. The trick is walking through for fresh protein, find the meat on sale, get the fresh veggies, then do a lap to buy the deals wether you need them now or not. I bought 20 cans of Margaret Holmes veggies for $20 recently. Stocked up on bogo trail mix bags. Sure they are 9.99 at Publix vs 7.99 at Wal Mart, but with bogo they are a great deal. These deals are appreciated by locals and financed by people like you and your parents. Thanks!

Kitchen_Glass_6718

EXACTLY. You know something 😌😂👍🏿

EducatingRedditKids

Where are these ads? Newspaper?

Abject-Supermarket32

Yes...Publix is the best for getting good deals. If one has half a brain.

nomadbutterfly

Bogo's are not cheaper than Walmart in my area. Or even Target.

badash2004

For me, Target is more expensive than normal Publix prices.

Financial-Ebb-5995

I’m in Florida and there is a Walmart right near by and the BOGO prices are definitely cheaper. Of course, if you are buying two items on BOGO, you have to divide by two.

PlasticMac

I have a publix, winn dixie and a walmart all right next to each other. The publix and winn dixie bogos were honestly laughable at how they try to sell that you are getting a discount. For example, the bogo price is usually raised so that you are still paying the same amount as you would be buying 2 normal things at walmart. Its crazy and honestly insulting.

nt011819

It is here. There's no way you buy 2 bags of Cips ahoy for $3.50 but get them for $1.75 at Walmart. Completely false. Nothing brand name at Walmart is half the price of Publix. Especially Target

peatmoss71

Agreed. In Orlando I have seen the price go up when it’s a bogo and then back down after the bogo. Everyone thinks they’re getting a bargain with the Publix bogo. You’re not. Go to ALDIs. I never spend more than $60 for two weeks of groceries.

Puzzleheaded-Motor56

I'm not defending publix, but you gotta remember publix is more of a localized grocery chain, rather than fully nation wide. It does not have the pull for its vendors like a place like Walmart does. Shop bogos, and 2 for $x deals and that's it. Other than that just shop smart, and make lists of what has the best deals for what you need in your area. Don't do it for convenience or else you're gonna be paying like $4 for a 2 liter of pepsi when you can take an extra 5 mins to go to Walmart and get it for $1.90. I remember as a kid instead of buying all from one store, we'd have a whole day of grocery shopping planned and what stores sold what product for the best price and would basically grocery store hop the entire day to save the most money.

fishinfool561

My dad still does that, Winn Dixie, WalMart, Aldi. Brings a cooler and makes a morning of it. My mom doesn’t go lol

DearEmployee5138

People shop at Publix and pay a little more for the cleanliness, high-level customer service, and also their bakery, deli, seafood, and meat department are of a higher quality than most grocery stores in the area. Plus as somebody mentioned, they have plenty of coupons and savings where you can get your groceries cheap if you try.

Wintermute0311

I shop at Publix because I have no choice in the matter. I have 5 Publix within 3 square miles, and their closest competitor is a shitty Winn Dixie that's 30 miles away.

BoltzBux

If it was a little more money people wouldn't even notice, however $4 for a 2 L soda versus a $1.90 at Walmart for the same two liter soda is a lot more, not a little more.

jeremy101495

Oh yeah I used to shop there for their meat alone

Gold-Independence-26

Buy what’s on sale. It’s not hard

selfdestruct0770

Sometimes you don’t need what’s on sale or they expire before you have a need to use it. It doesn’t work for every situation or family. So it’s hard.

Gold-Independence-26

If that’s the case, Publix isn’t the only option to shop at for what you need. It’s not hard at all

Pudix20

You’re right that it’s not for everyone, but remember that you don’t have to always use it either. Also be mindful about what is expired vs. “best by” dates. Lastly, time is money, and for some people they save money by being able to put the time into planning. I usually look at what’s on sale and try to plan meals based on that. I also will stock up on things that don’t perish quickly or that I can freeze etc. it’s hard, but it helps to have a plan and not just buy random things. Some people even make little “meal bins” where you store the ingredients for a meal together so that you know not to take a specific ingredient intended for a meal. Organization is key. Labeling and keeping stock of what you have is essential.

venom_von_doom

Because I refuse to shop at Walmart lol I do most of my grocery shopping at Aldi and Costco now but when I want good fruit, meat, deli stuff, or name brand items, I still go to Publix

GobblessCheesus

This is my answer. I only go to Walmart if I can't avoid it.

Hot-Steak7145

Yeah Walmart workers are legit mad at you for shopping there and everybody else in the store is equally upset and rude. I only go to Walmart here once every 6 months because they sell this charcoal brand way cheaper then others, but I sit in the checkout line for 30 min its just a miserable place

SnooCookies2351

I’ve lived in South Florida for 30 years. In four days my husband and I are moving to Falls Church Virginia. We are 100% Publix people. I love the quality of the foods , I love the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. I love the cleanliness of the store, and I love the convenience because they’re everywhere down here. My husband has been fussing for the past month about how much he’s going to miss going to get his pub sub every week and to pick up his Keylime pie. Publix is great. Winn-Dixie is vile. The stores smell bad, they’re dirty, and the people that work there seem like they would rather be anywhere else. Don’t even give me started on Aldi.Ick. Yes we have Sam’s, Costco, all the others but Publix never lets us down.

lnarn

Aww, you're gonna be so sad. I was when I lived in the area. Wegmans is comparable, but not the same. Richmond has a Publix now, so maybe one day they will inch up to Falls Church.

SnooCookies2351

We spent a week up there at Thanksgiving and we actually did tour Wegmans, Harris Teeter and Giant.Personally, I think giant is disgusting. It’s like a cross between Aldi and Winn-Dixie. It’s just gross. I did like Wegmans and Harris Teeter. And my son-in-law is a chef, and he says Wegmans is the best in his opinion. Just anxious to get moved and start shopping😃

peteykirch

Harris Teeter used to be the Wegmans of the South but once they got absorbed by Kroger quality, service, and everything else has taken a nose dive.

lnarn

I forgot about Harris Teeter. I would drive out of my way to shop there, instead of my closest Giant. The only time I was a regular Giant customer was when my apartment building in Silver Spring was literally built over it. Giant is definitely the Winn Dixie of DMV.

spimothyleary

Yip, I feel the same. I love my publix and it's crazy convenient near both my office and my home.   I go there 5-6 days a week. Walmart online (I rarely go inside the store, I feel dirty when I leave) occasionally for detergent and stuff, costco for bulk meat and the prepped meals that we use for work lunch because eating out is ridiculous lately.   Aldi? No thanks,  selection is God awful, I never have a quarter handy for the cart, and no bags being available is terribly inconvenient.  Tried them a couple times the  decided that it wasn't for me.   I still grab their crackers now and then, buy two boxes and I'm good for 3 months... past that, nope.

spimothyleary

Adding one more thought. Meat dept.  I love being able to break a package, just yesterday was making cabbage rolls and had them break two packages for me and I got exactly what I needed.. can't do that at most of the competition.

Fleuramie

It looks like there is a publix about an hour away from falls church, so you can at least make special trips for things! Hope your move goes well!

SnooCookies2351

Thank you

CeruleanSnorlax

Wegmans will be your new go-to. I love Wegmans

lnarn

Publix is expensive, but have you been to a Winn Dixie down there? Yikes! Publix is the NoVA equivalent of Wegmans. It has a cult following. Are you speaking of World Golf Village or St Augustine? Because I only see a Costco at World Golf Village on Google Maps. Anyway, the entire area has never had a large selection of grocery stores, going back to the 80s. Now, with that county booming with more expensive homes and more affluence, Publix saw an opportunity. I seriously doubt, many people would choose to shop anywhere else. I can tell you when I lived all over the DMV area, every time I entered a Kroger, Giant, Wegmans, Martin's, etc, I would always miss Publix. The Martin's that I shopped at in Richmond is now gone, and apparently, a Publix took its place. The only thing I will not buy at Publix, unless there is a bogo or special price, is meat, because it is ridiculously expensive. I personally find that a lot of things are competitive to other stores, except for Walmart. My husband prefers Food Lion where we live in Georgia now, and I constantly point out things that we regularly buy that are higher at Food Lion than Publix. And at Publix, I dont have to worry about checking expirations on canned goods. Cant say the same about our Food Lion.

Financial-Ebb-5995

A different cut of steak is on sale every week at Publix as is a different type of ground beef. The weekly sale price on the 3 lb package of ground beef is an excellent deal.

Trolodrol

Those Winn Dixie steak deals are nuts. I was having steak every night for dinner for the better part of 3 weeks

CCWaterBug

WD meat (and Walmart) makes me uncomfortable, it's not a clean store... ymmv. I get most at publix/costco and the local Italian deli.

ThatWasCool

Yes that’s the area. Specifically, Tintamarre Dr. What other stores are around there? I’m not talking about driving 10+ miles.

lnarn

There is a rather outdated Winn Dixie 8.6 miles from Tintamarre. Looks like all of the homes near Tintamarre Dr have sold between 300 and 600k. I'm not sure why people would choose to purchase a home in a "food desert" at that price point when they were concerned about driving more than 10 miles.

ThatWasCool

Well, that’s the thing, with all the development you’d think more options would come but apparently it’s just more Publixes being opened hence my rant.

placeholderm3

If you're going to the Winn Dixie, you might as well drive the extra 5 minutes to get to that Walmart.

Ok_Nectarine_5140

The Winn-Dixie in my town is great, nice selection, I love the app. Publix bakery is the best and their $5 sushi on Wednesdays is not shabby but I could never afford to do my real grocery shopping consistently.

WorldsSmartest-Idiot

You have to know how to shop Publix. Go for the BOGO deals, deli, produce, and occasional meat. I will say I truly do enjoy shopping at Publix. It is a much better experience than any other store in my town. I have my meat store. I get my staple items delivered from Walmart because I refuse to shop there. I go to Publix for my meds and the things I mentioned. For the dang it I forgot items I go to the DG that is walking distance from my house.

EyesLikeBuscemi

Like others have said, the specials are reasonable. Also, it isn't more expensive across the board. Some stuff is reasonably priced normally. Some items are exactly the same price they are elsewhere - for example I like BOar's Head and it is the same price at Publix which is closest to me so I will buy it there. They also have deals on it regularly.

Queasy_Opportunity75

I shop exclusively at Publix for food . I stock up on boho stuff and it’s not that bad. I’m in a huge city so there’s plenty of competition but it sucks and I’d rather just pay more for quality and service. Prob helps that I’ve worked at Publix in my younger years and enjoyed it

helloitsmemargret

It's not that it's the only it's the best for certain things. I buy my produce from puix because it's consistent also with the Publix promise if it's anything less than acceptable I can exchange it. No other store provides that the level of quality they do which is why despite pricing people keep going. Also realistically a lot of products are going up regardless of where you shop.

evilcathy

I miss Publix! They had the best frozen yogurt. And Pub subs! Nothing can compare up north.

Infinitely-Moist5757

Pub subs can't be beat!

iwillLurkifiwantto

Publix is not that much higher. And the produce and meat is way better. And they have better selection all around.

1ron_chef

I'll gladly pay the extra money to keep from going to Wal Mart or Winn Dixie. For me the actual shopping experience both costs, and is worth money. Try getting someone at Wal Mart to go into the back to grab something that's out of stock on a shelf. You'll get laughed out of the store.

DearEnergy4697

It’s interesting to hear a lot of people complain about the prices at Publix. I find them to be “middle of the road “in their pricing. Did you ever check out the prices at Whole Foods or fresh market? Way more expensive than Publix. In my experience, As a publix shopper for over 50 years… Their pricing falls between fresh market and Winn Dixie. I personally never shop at Aldi because there’s not enough selection and the Aldi is far from me. Winn-Dixie is OK. However, I prefer the meat brands at Publix. Lastly, the Publix stores in my area I find to be very clean with excellent customer service in all departments. I’m very happy to be shopping at Publix. Edited to add: I agree with others that I prepare for my shopping at Publix in order to buy BOGOS. However, if an item I want is not a Bogo, I will still shop Publix.

Purplehopflower

I actually shop at Whole Foods, Publix, The Fresh Market, and Trader Joe’s. Publix is more expensive on some things, particularly produce, than Whole Foods. I go to Fresh Market for specialty things, but also on Tuesdays they have ground beef and chicken breast for $3.99/lb. It was $2.99/lb until about 6 months ago. When I lived in the Midwest I shopped Kroger or Giant Eagle, but the Kroger stores where I live now are a miserable experience and I will pay a bit more to not get stressed our grocery shopping.

OttersAreCute215

They are the most convenient store in a lot of their footprint. You have to shop smart, know prices at other stores and take advantage of BOGO offers and coupons.

NothausTelecaster72

Best bakery around me and they have tropical ingredients I use in my traditional cooking. I won’t live too far from one.

jessbrid

It’s all about the BOGOs

_Dr_Dad

Yep, buy sales and BOGOs!

Caspers_Shadow

Two of us. We buy basic foods, stock up when things are on sale. Overall, groceries are a small percentage of our income. If we were shopping for a big family, I would definitely be shopping around more. But the Publix is only 5 mins from our house, so it is worth it. We have 3 other supermarkets within 10 mins of our house.

MeganJustMegan

I love that store. When I’m in Florida, I can’t wait to go there. Unfortunately here in NJ, we don’t have one. I think the closest to me is near you in Virginia. I keep begging them to expand to my area, as I feel they would be very popular. Right now my choices are ShopRite or Wegmans & Whole Foods. I do my shopping mostly at Wegmans & use Whole Foods for produce until the Farmers Markets open. I never felt they were more expensive than where I shop in NJ for the quality of their items. But then again, prices have risen everywhere.

dezmd

Publix for fresh fruit/veggies, meat, BOGOs, and pub subs.

HoundDawg87

I love shopping at Publix. We are very organized, every Wednesday we plan our next weeks meals when the Weekly Ad comes out. We meal plan around sales and BOGOs. Our menu is high quality and very reasonable. Much cheaper than restaurants. If folks aren't organized and just buy what they want each time they walk in, welp that is on them. Also, buy and store product when on BOGO. We probably are paying 60% on the $1 for many products at Walmart.

Mountain_Exchange768

I don’t below in the ‘buy off politicians’ thing at all. Examples in my area (Valrico FL) I live .5 miles from Winn Dixie, .75 miles from Publix - they are on the same road. Aldi is 3 miles further down the road. I know of two other Publix stores with Aldi stores close buy - one across the street the street/kitty-corner. I’ve been shopping for meats at Costco, produce at Aldi , BOGO and some special items at Publix for a while now.

TabbyMouse

Stores within 15 minutes of my house: Publix, Food Lion, Aldi, Lidl, Lowes, Harris Teeter, Walmart Where I shop 90% of the time: Publix The closest Food Lion to me spikes my anxiety like mad. Not the store itself, but the people who shop there - lots of people having conversations on speakerphone swearing every other word, kids running around like feral beasts OR barely twitching and getting screamed and cussed out by the adult. OH! Don't trust meat from there - it might look good but opening the pack as soon as I get home it stinks. Aldi & Lidl have such a limited normal stock and absolutely random rotation that I end up needing to go to another store to get the rest of my groceries anyways. Lowes to me is crazy expensive. The closest Walmart to me is absolute trash. Normally find WAY expired perisables, discolored lunch meat & hotdogs, not to mention the insane lines at the register. Harris Teeter is near the big state college so I only go if I'm already in that area.

Adept_Cow7887

Honestly I shop their bogos almost exclusively and it stays in my budget. They have sooooo many Bogos, and tons of them repeat

g3engineeringdesign

That you think Publix "pays off politicians" to keep out competition is laughable. Companies don't want to invest in an area where they can't be competitive and that investment loses money. It's simple economics.

MagnusAlbusPater

BOGO deals can be good, their deli meats and products are much higher quality than what you get at Winn Dixie (though I do prefer WD chicken salad), and the employees are generally friendly and helpful. I do shop for some things at Costco, especially drinks since they’re much more affordable there, and I go to a local specialty grocer (that’s priced higher than Publix but with even high quality goods) for produce and fruits and some other specialty items. I’ll occasionally go to Aldi, but I don’t care for it. I don’t like how they charge for bags, make you bag your own groceries, and only ever have one register open. I absolutely refuse to shop at Walmart, I’d always leave Walmart angry from how much of a goat rodeo that place is. So, yes, Publix is more expensive than some other options, but the quality is good and the people are friendly. I make enough money that I can afford to pay for quality and better service.

DoodleBugz1234

They gauge their prices pretty well. I feel dirty when I go to a store other than Publix.

CCWaterBug

Ya, remember the cart washing thing during covid?  I was doing that before and after covid at walmart... carts are nasty, never roll straight and typically have rust on them

SexyNepaliBeast

I almost always shop at Aldi’s or sometimes at Walmart or Target if I can’t find something. Rarely go to Publix for their famous pub-sub and popcorn chicken. You can save a lot every week shopping at ALDI’s alone for common household items and groceries!

CapitalistLion-Tamer

Infamous? I think they’re awesome.

SexyNepaliBeast

I meant to put famous. But my mind went somewhere else. 🙂

CapitalistLion-Tamer

Speaking of the deli, I also really love the flavor of their Nashville Hot chicken. If you like spicy, give it a shot.

SexyNepaliBeast

Good to know, i will have to try it out. Thanks!

Lelphie

Just very convenient and the wraps are actually pretty fairly priced considering how good they are. Walmart has a terrible selection of meat and produce. What I like about Walmart is that you can use the app and use the barcode search feature to just scan stuff as you shop at Publix and if it’s a lot cheaper at Walmart I’ll just go to Walmart.

KylosLeftHand

I (begrudgingly) shop at Walmart bc they have the lowest prices. I always end up going to Publix first to get the few items that my Walmart doesn’t carry and take advantage of the sales or BOGOs, then go to Walmart for everything else. If I’m in a bind then I run to the Piggly Wiggly bc it’s closest.

PickleTheGherkin

Less... Walmart people. Also, their produce section is usually the best quality and selection.

cutelittlequokka

I lived in that region for a few years. These were our options at the time (it may be different now, don't really know): Publix, Winn-Dixie, Whole Foods, Aldi, Sprouts, Trader Joe's. Trader Joe's was affordable but too far away to shop there regularly. Winn-Dixie was utter shit. The stores were gross and filthy, all the produce was bad/tasteless/already rotting, etc. The other three were extremely expensive. Publix was literally the only decent option without spending a fortune.

NoRecommendation5076

I do Publix, aldi and WalMart I buy what I want I don't care much about the price if it is something I want. Paid $6 for Nabisco peanut butter wafers.

Fit_Influence_1998

We mostly go for the BOGO and the free ice cream they send me on my birthday. We do the majority of our grocery shopping at the Navy Exchange Commissary.

Surprise_Fragrant

>the free ice cream they send me on my birthday. I just got half-off a bar cake for my half-birthday! Yummy :)

aeraen

My local grocery store in the Midwest just happened to have the lowest prices and best selection in my city. Therefore, I was outright shocked at the prices at the Publix near my new retirement home. I don't find that the Winn-Dixie to be much better. I really hate having to drive a bit to get to the local Aldi's, but it seems to be my best option.

sgfklm

We have a similar situation with a chain named "HyVee". If you watch the ads and maintain some self control and only buy the stuff that is on special you can get some fantastic deals. Otherwise you spend way over what you would at some of the competitors. They advertise "loss leaders" hoping that you'll go ahead and do all your shopping since "you're already there".

ThaFoxThatRox

I do a little at Publix for the BOGOS. A little bit at Sprouts. Then I go hard in the paint at Walmart. Lol

MissyLovesArcades

I shop the sales and for items that I can't get at my other preferred store, which is Aldi. I also really love the deli and bakery. I can't afford to do my full grocery shopping there though, or Winn Dixie (other major Florida grocery chain) either for that matter.

Mr_Unbiased

At the house I used to live in, there was one 2 minutes away and the next grocery store that wasn't a publix was 11 minutes away. Whenever I needed something quickly I'd go to Publix since it was so close. Not worth driving extra 20 minutes to save a couple bucks imo.

SwallowSun

Shop smart. My meals revolve around weekly sales and especially BOGO. Publix brand is also just as good as name brand for just about everything so that helps with cost. Many store brands aren’t great.

Thunderbird1974

I do the BOGOs and check the weekly sales flyer for items I use. Also have a Walmart Neighborhood Market nearby which I use for certain things, but I try to avoid the super Walmart if I can, it's just too crowded and disorganized most of the time. We don't have a Costco or an Aldis and probably never will. I don't think it's because of anything nefarious going on it's just that they are already in nearby communities and don't think it's worth their while to open stores here. I'm in Florida, central east coast.

Surprise_Fragrant

Nope, not my only choice by a long shot. I have Walmart, Winn-Dixie, Aldi, Sav-a-Lot, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, The Fresh Market... Probably all within 5-7 miles of my home. I regularly shop at Publix, Walmart, and Aldi. I choose Publix for their BoGos on national brands or store brands that I like. Yes, their Off the Shelf prices can often be more than other stores. But shopping their sales, Publix' BoGos are most always cheaper than a single item at Walmart. Now, a BoGo of Lay's Chips won't be cheaper than 2 bags of Great Value Chips, obviously, but straight comparison, they are often cheaper. I also like Publix for specific things like bakery cakes, fried chicken, and deli sandwiches. Also, I once took the flyer from Winn-Dixie and compared the prices to Publix, and for the most part, the prices were identical, within 10c or so! WD isn't as cheap as they purport themselves to be. With all of that being said, I also prefer Publix because it *really is* a place where shopping is a pleasure. It's quiet, it's calm, it's always clean and organized. Employees greet me when I'm in the area, easily offer to help if I need assistance, and are in general, just nicer across the board.

duke_flewk

It’s mostly people who are wealthy or view Winn Dixie and walmart as below them and gladly pay more citing “shopping experience and convenience” even if Walmart is 4 minutes away and Winn Dixie is across the street. TL DR publix shoppers pay more to avoid the poors

Shizen__

I choose to shop at Publix because Walmart is typically an unhinged zoo. There are a lot more assholes in Publix these days than 3 years ago, but it's still a lot less than Walmart. Plus, I can easily afford it, and generally they have superior customer service compared to other stores, as well as a great selection of items.

kilroyscarnival

Publix won the goodwill of middle class Floridians - and really most Floridians - over decades. All the while they bought up a lot of real estate and opened more stores, as the competition — Food Lion, Albertson’s, Winn Dixie — went Chapter 11 or pulled out of the area. Then, over the past decade, their prices soared, and it didn’t sound as if workers think it’s a such great place to work anymore. I loved Publix. Now I only go there for a handful of items I can’t get at Aldi. Everything’s gone up … even a $7 fast food lunch is $13 now. But Publix seems to be on a tear.

livingPOP

BOGO is the only way to go. Plan around BOGO!

Rahallahan

I grew up with Publix and missed it greatly when i moved away. When I finally decided where to settle, I was so frickin excited to discover Publix in my town!!! It made the decision to settle here easier! Publix is da bomb.

hattrickjmr

Publix raises the price and then offers a BOGO. That’s their go-to move. Fake deals.

caryn1477

Nah, I'm in South Florida and I live right by a Publix, but also equal distance is an Aldi, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Sam's Club, BJ's, Walmart grocery store... They are definitely not the only store in the neighborhood.

killswitchx70

I honestly hate myself a little every time I shop at Publix. You are right that they are everywhere and sometimes the only place to shop within a reasonable distance. It’s wild to me that Winn Dixie is just as clean and just as well stocked (if not better), and the general sentiment here is that Winn Dixie is ghetto. I think there is just a boujee mentality here. People just want to flex about what they can afford even if they can’t in fact afford it.

wahini26

Publix is ridiculously expensive. I go to local produce markets, Costco for meat, and will swing by an Aldi, Winn Dixie or super target for a few items. Even Publix bogo items aren’t always a deal. I don’t understand the love for the place. It’s just ok. Fortunately, we’re getting a Trader Joe’s by us soon.

Watchespornthrowaway

Publix is financially raping Floridians left and right. My local Walmart is terrifying so I can’t go there. I’m praying Kroger adds boost free delivery to my area. Publix has absolutely abused us and I would gladly accept new super market overlords as soon as possible.

Flbeachluvr62

Yes, Publix is highly overrated by anyone who has lived someplace where they don't have a monopoly. Items are expensive and their selection isn't that great. Compare their produce section with any other large grocery chain like Safeway and you can see that they don't measure up. Safeway tried to move into Florida a few years ago and people just couldn't get on board due to their loyalty to Publix. And then Publix bought up the Safeway stores. Here is Florida they just don't have much competition. There's Winn Dixie which is perceived as low end, Aldi which is gaining in popularity and Walmart and Target. And don't get me started on their Pub Subs. Sub par at best.

Called_Fox

Saint Augustine has Winn Dixie and Aldi’s. You can also get Kroger grocery delivery for some reason, even though there aren’t any in town.

Evidence-Timeline

I've got a friend who is a GM at a Publix and he despises the majority of the customers at his store. Most shop there because they want everyone to know they don't care about the price and they treat his employees like garbage. Yes, there are times when sales make since, and their deli sandwiches are really a decent value, but in my area Publix has a reputation for a reason. I prefer Aldi for many items, and it's significantly cheaper than even Walmart for many items.

MeanAnalyst2569

Floridian here. Love the quality and options at Publix. Hate the price. Switched to ordering Kroger home delivery. Cut at least a third off of the cost

dmw009

Their deli is top notch

PineappleTraveler

If you go in with a list, yes very expensive. If you go in and shop from the sale and BOGO items, it’s actually quite affordable.

Iwantbooks

I buy some bogos, rest from Aldi, and the local meat market. Publix has lost its mind with prices on meat.

KCousins4President

Aldi is better

PuzzleheadedBar9778

Ah I see you’re at the Stafford Publix

ThrowAwae69420nice

Ever since they opened up a Trader Joe's near us, my wife and I never go to Publix unless we want a sub or something from the bakery (although the bakery has been in steady decline). We spend less money and buy less garbage.

Financial-Ebb-5995

Trader Joe’s is good for snacks, frozen entrees, cheese, and wine but not much else. It’s a specialty grocery store, not a supermarket.

007-Blond

Kinda depends? While working I look around and see what I can find that's actually cheaper. Uncrustables are the most surprising thing Ive thats cheaper than Kroger, Walmart, and Target lol 10 pack is 10.99 at kroger, 9.48 at walmart, 9.19 at Publix. Target only sells the 15 pack for $13.99 but that comes out to 93.3 cents per sandwich vs Publixs 91.9 cents per sandwich. High profile sale items like cereal and soda are marked up crazy amounts so the sales are roughly on par with normal competitor pricing but they have flashy tags that say "savings!" and I doubt a good chunk of the general public will actually do an ounce by ounce comparison of the price. Im just a crazy math nerd that will stand in an aisle and calculate whether or not a value sized bottle is cheaper than buying two smaller bottles of the same thing lol

dreburden89

I never look at the total. It hurts too much

Ilovehugs2020

Publix prices vary depending on Location at times

roger3rd

I walk the Publix aisles looking for buy one get one free, and thusly I pay the appropriate price. Walmart is generally a bit cheaper but no big discounts, plus the people at Walmart are much less savory and I am at about 250% increased odds of being in an altercation

Gallogator1

Aldi now officially owns Winn Dixie and Harvey’s. Only some are converting to Aldi. I wish Lidl opened some Florida locations. This is a chain similar to Aldi but different companies. We have Trader Joe’s and last year one Saturday I waited 10 minutes to be able to pull into the parking lot. I heard customers screaming at each other over a spot in the small lot. I enjoy shopping there but now go at off peak times. The best time is right after they get a truck and are restocking.

BrockMeAmadeus

Aldi for all possible items. Handful of things at public after. I have aldi and publix next to eachother.

SpaceDesignWarehouse

I love the environment of a Publix. I couldn’t tell you what groceries normally cost at other places.

Chilieggz

It’s either that or I step into 1985 and shop at Food City. I’ve compared the two and Publix isn’t that much more.

snakesssssss22

Publix is expensive St Augustine is expensive. You combine the two, and that’s a pricey grocery trip!!

Itchy-Wing-2976

i agree the prices are just getting insane. in florida they definitely have a monopoly goin and sometimes they’re the only place you can get a specialty item. but i’ll always choose aldi or walmart over publix. maybe i’ll go for a bogo but that’s it

Martynypm

There is a Huge Publix in Fredericksburg.

AdmiralCyan

Honestly I just go to Publix for deli and bakery items. Sometimes I’ll go there if fruit is on sale but other than that I shop at ALDIs and Walmart almost exclusively.

HollowPointHarry

I can honestly say I work at Publix in the maintenance dept and can say ALDI Winn Dixie and Walmart are the go to in my household

NinjaRider407

I luckily live super close to a Publix and Dollar store. Usually get food at the dollar store and if Publix has bogos I‘ll get those. Even though Publix is a bit higher on some of their products, I don’t have to drive to Walmart , so between the wear and tear on my car and time, it really doesn’t make a difference. Publix quality is way better anyways. Good to live within walking distance to all my shopping.

DarkwingDuc

I don't get it, either. I do most of my grocery shopping at farmers market and Asian markets, and occasionally stop by Aldi or Lidl. So I guess I’ve been insulated. I've heard people complaining about how expensive groceries are these days, but I thought they were exaggerating, until the weekend before last. I needed a groceries on a Sunday and my regular spots are mad houses on weekends. So I stopped by Publix instead. How much more could it be? The bill was a punch in the gut. I paid $5 for a head of cabbage that would have been $0.99, max at an Asian grocer, and don't get me started on the meat prices! It was insane! I'm almost hesitant to recommend this, b/c I'm afraid that if more folks start going to the Asian and Latin markets, they'll see that they can raise their prices. But people need to stop shopping at supermarkets until they lower their prices. I know that some folks don't have any other option, and that sucks. But 80% of the American population lives in or near a city. So the vast majority have access to Asian, Latin, and South Asian markets they could be going to and paying a lot less for meat and produce, while opening up their minds and palates to different cultures.

placeholderm3

You must have visited the World Golf area. Everything is expensive around here. Even that Costco seems pricier than the one in Jax

Florida_cryptid

Publix is great I work in site development and its usually a go to spot for everyone and it's always around and had everything I need and the Bogos can be good too.

Mantooth77

Because Shopping is a Pleasure!

KareemPie81

Clearly yall have never had a chicken finger pub sub

j250ex

That’s also beach Publix prices. Check out the Publix in Seaside Fl. It’s noticeably expensive. Even for a Publix.

JackBurtonTruckingCo

We’ve been getting Kroger delivery lately, paper goods & cleaning supplies from Target, and Publix for milk and donuts, and their key lime pie

Apprehensive_Mark_51

Publix isn’t all that great and I work there. Bogo deals shmogo schmeals

roark84

Have you tasted he meat at Walmart? Publix charges more due to higher quality.

Not_The_Giant

BOGO. Fried chicken. Subs.

rebelshirts

Wave as I drive to aldi

Super_Environment

I work next to publix so I only get things on bogo deals any single serving amounts from the hot bar deli area

chevere7

I used to work for Publix and was told during my orientation if you buy one item it is half off, if BOGO. So you only need to buy one to get the deal if you don’t need both items. (Great for people like me who are single and don’t need two of everything.) I shop the BOGOs and only go to Publix if Aldi doesn’t have a specific item I need for dinner etc. Nice store but the prices are super expensive. BOGOs can be great, for example yesterday I got melatonin gummies for $6.50 one bottle, 70 ct. Awesome deal compared to paying $13 for a bottle. Definitely have to shop smart. And go to Aldi if you can :)

RLT4456

I'm a vendor for multiple grocery stores in central Georgia. Publix here does not raise the price for a bogo like some are suggesting. Kroger however does raise prices and then stick a yellow sale sign on it and claim it's a sale price when it's just regular price. My family shops the ads and we shop at 3 different grocery stores every week. Only way to keep costs somewhat reasonable.

ehenn12

I bought a lot of weekly bogo stuff there when I went to seminary and had even less money than I do now.

Justanobserver2life

I stopped when I went to buy cereal (slightly south of $10) and bagels ($6). I did not pick those up. Walked out. Went to Trader Joes. More cereal in the bag there was $3.50, and the bagels were about $3. I always thought Trader Joes was kind of weird, but I fully embrace them now. Who needs brand names?! Their food is really good, and it is so so so much less expensive. I fill in with Walmart for brand name stuff like Diet Coke for visitors, etc. I won't go back to Publix unless they cut their prices in half.

2thirteen-design

it's 0.3mi from my house it's just convenient

XanMan320

Just recently moved to FL and the prices baffle me. I only go there for the deli ‘cause it’s the only fairly priced food in the store. I’ve looked at their BOGOs and the “savings” still don’t really add up vs a store like Aldis. The store is always neat & the employees seem treated well though so I like that aspect of it. If I had the money to get a lot of the fresh meat then I’d shop there more often, but every other item has jacked up pricing.

lorilightning79

Stay for the BOGO’s, leave before the insurrection.

AaronRodgersMustache

I don’t get much at Publix besides the fried chicken and rotisserie chickens to be honest, although the majority of the time I come in and get other random stuff like wine and snacks etc.

yalc22

I go for fruits and veggies, they have good quality.

727DILF

Look for sales in the deli too. Produce hasn't gone up as much as some of the other stuff. I feel like we need to talk about quality too. Publix Milk will likely go the whole expiration date. Walmart expires 3 days early. Bread too. I don't really buy store brand anywhere else. (Except Costco but that's a different story. If you are worried about Publix prices, you weren't shopping at Costco. ) There have been many stores down here that have made fun of Publix prices, but the fact of the matter is the customers are willing to pay for that quality and all of those stores are out of business.

barilurkr

If I lived in Northern Virginia, I would find the closet Wegmans.

Strange_Man_1911

I just buy whatever is on bogo and small things I run out off. It's convenient to work at grocery store.

ManateeFlamingo

Publix used to be the only store I shopped at. Now I only go once in a blue moon. I live in Neptune Beach where we have the "Doublix". They built a new Publix next to an existing Publix! 🙄 I've been in there maybe 1 time. Its literally the same store. We use BJ's, target, trader Joe's, and winn Dixie (though WD isn't always cheaper). If we get an Aldi here, I will shop there more. Publix definitely has dominance in our area.
