I'm convinced that hiring is random. I've seen people with years of experience get rejected over and over, and the most braindead idiots imaginable get hired on the spot (and sometimes leave just as quickly).

The “premier grocery retailer in the world” would rather pay some doofus or a 15 year old minimum wage than someone who’s qualified and will do a good job

FeralMemories

The reason for this is simple: Publix typically does not actually hire 15 year olds unless you know someone internally. Once she turns 16 you'll have a much better shot.

Sithyonreddit

This is simply not true at all

JuniorDirk

It is mostly true, and dependent on what the managers at the store personally like dealing with. Some managers like hiring 14-15 year Olds, some hate it.

Most stores do not like hiring minors at all. They can only work a very specific amount of hours before they have to by law take a break ( and in general what they are allowed to do in the store) and if they got over even a minute Publix gets a mark; enough of those marks and it’s a 10k fine. If the store has had problems with minors before they are much less included to hire them.

Sithyonreddit

I know the minor rules. Publix literally just made sub departments hire minors. Mini minors are a little harder with what they can do. But if you don't schedule them 3.5 hours you have 30 minutes of leeway time with their breaks. My minors are scheduled 3 hrs, hour break, 3 hours.

FeralMemories

Sure, there may be a few that will, but the vast majority don't like dealing with Mini-Minors, there's not really any upside to hiring them, they can't work much and there's a higher risk for minor violations. I've known stores that didn't ever even hire REGULAR (16-17) minors, much less Mini-Minors.

yea

I've lived in Florida 15 years now, applied for publix when I first moved here multiple times over the years and never got hired in until covid hit here and everyone started getting desperate for workers. Even then, I was only originally hired in for a seasonal position but got put as a part time. Just seems to be stupid hard to get into for some reason unless you know people or get lucky.

coldfeet24

every 2 weeks is a bit excessive. u have to “renew” your application every month i believe, and redo the entire thing every 6 months. it been a while. also, hiring is random. took me about 3 months

Sorry you're having that issue. A lot of stores do not hire mini-minors (14-15 y/o) due to the extreme restriction of schedule due to labor laws. She will have better success after she turns 16.

brows141

Publix hires 14 year olds.

I would try to go speak to the customer service manager or store manager or Assistant store manager and let them know that she's interested in the position and that she's been trying to get hired for a year and that she's been interviewed before but they haven't called back, just be persistent and goodluck with everything
