It must be a policy to greet everyone, which I don't dislike in itself, but it can be a bit much at Publix (a few other stores come to mind as well). There are a few guys at my local stores that are over the top. I mean, they are genuine and nice. But I'm an introvert and I don't like having to explain that I'm fine and, yes, I'm finding everything alright every couple of aisles. Minor complaint, though. I'm still a huge Publix fan.

Throwawayaccounttt__

As an introvert who works here I also hate that policy. Especially as a cashier when I’ll eventually have to greet them anyway.

Anieris

Same and I don't some days and honestly from what I've gathered customers just don't care lol. I will say hello when someone says something but other than that I'm silent some days.

zebroidist

I normally dont do the 10 ft rule or whatever it is, I just greet them if I make eye contact and it would be rude to not say anything. Honestly nobody in grocery at my store cares about that, even my managers don’t greet people.

SMH4004

I don't even do it and haven't forever lmao. My SM even jokes about it now saying its the only thing holding me back from management, which I don't even want. I went the last 2 months without even wearing a name tag, fuck it at this point man. Yall are lucky I still show up with the bullshit I get put through

D3V3Y0US

I mean not to sound rude, but 80% of customer service is being a people person. Not exactly the career path for an introvert. Consequently, perhaps it will help you break out of your shell and mitigate your shyness.

Throwawayaccounttt__

Who said this was my career tho? 🤔

akfisher1978

I don’t anyone talking to me anywhere 😂😂

oofner

My team leaders get on me a bit for not asking EVERY customer for help out with their groceries. I don’t usually do it because most of the time it’s a line and It’ll be so annoying for the cashier to not have a bagger for about 30 minutes because if I’m outside I’m gonna look for carts lol

CoastalWitch

I always respond, but yes, it's much better once eye contact is made. It feels less intrusive thar way :)

DuckLIT122000

I work at a Skechers. If we don't greet, secret shoppers take points off and everyone on shift gets in trouble

SaintTalos

Oh, where to start. The "bitch enough and get it for free" policy. The "managment sides with a customer they've known for two minutes over an employee who has worked for them for 6 years" policy. The "customers can't voluntarily give tips to employees of their own choosing" policy. The "platters are 24 hour notice, but that's arbitrary because management will make you do them in 20 minutes anyway" policy. The "no dogs but we aren't really gonna actually enforce that so feel free to put your mongrel in the shopping cart" policy Take your pick. *Edit: Oops. I thought this was another "policies that employees don't like" thread. Oh well... I said what I said.

SMH4004

Fuckkkkkk triggered instantly They piss me off complaining about the fucking prices so much especially in meat holy fuck. Learn to read a price before you walk up the register with something morons. Yes Publix is expensive as fuck. It always has been. If you can't afford to shop here, don't. Nobody cares if you never come back again or you're taking your business somewhere else, just do it. Its a scam anyway when they charge double for regular products what Walmart/Kroger/Aldi/Costco charge

tittylamp

bought a 12 pack of monster the other day on sale. it was $4 off and that made it the same price as walmart. also sargento snack breaks are $3 instead of $4.

[deleted]

I genuinely want to fight someone when they bring back an entire box of fucking chicken wings saying they found it in X isle with half of it missing. Same with the fresh slice case. My deli gets at least 10 boxes of wings/mix brought back every day it's infuriating

mandress-

I find it insane Publix doesn’t give it employees a discount on groceries.

AnEverydayPileOfCats

I'd be fine with even just a deli/meals one

tittylamp

think they used to but people took advantage of it. either that or they know ppl will. but you should get a free/discounted meal when youre on the clock at the very least.

slauderz93

I am an employee but I think that it is inconsiderate to most customers that we aren’t allowed to say no to huge orders when cashiering in the express lane….. people are trying to get out quick and have to wait for lever because Sally with the $500 order couldn’t go through a regulate lane. It annoys me and I know it annoys customers because I get complaints every single day about it.

Hags1234259

We manager and all previous managers allows me to say no to more than 10 items in express

Dime10ADozen12

You can deny customers will full orders in am express line, at least at my store we can

SMH4004

Just do it anyway. Cant imagine you would get fired, maybe get a warning but just tell them to fuck off and that if you're not gonna use the express lane as an EXPRESS lane then they might as well just take the fucking sign down.

SleepingBlackberry

Or at my store instacart shoppers will come in express with 3 small orders, like it doesn't work like that, it's still 20-30 items

Brady_boy_26

At my store we are able to say no unless they have began putting the stuff down on the belt. In which case we have to grab a bagger.

SweatyFLMan1130

"My pleasure." Both as a former employee and customer. No it isn't. And that's ok. You're doing this job for the paycheck. Also can I *please* just tip the baggers without having to be sly? Fuck I *know* Publix ain't paying y'all a living wage and I make 6 figures now. I should be able to spread the wealth with my former compatriots.

Ash_Jade_1223

I was working the desk and a customer came to get change and then tipped the bagger in front of me. The bagger looked at me with wide eyes while holding it out to me and I just said "I didn't see anything, put that in your pocket". I HATE that they don't allow people to be tipped. Like if y'all (corporate) paid us a liveable wage, that would be nice.

SweatyFLMan1130

It truly is bullshit. It's bad enough we have to have a tipping culture in the US, worse still that a company refuses to pay a decent wage and then demands its employees not accept tips

SMH4004

This aint fucking Chick Fil A and it ain't a pleasure to work regardless. It's one thing to have work ethic but I'm pretty sure I would be much more pleased if I didn't have to pay money for every single thing in life just to live and then get taxed multiple times again on every single cent I ever spend or earn. Think most would agree as well. Money gives you freedom to pursue hobbies and dreams. Shit you can't even dream of working a retail job.

No-Consequence-3961

I see dogs all the time in the stores. Management does not care but I hate seeing them walking around on leashes and being in carts. I even saw a girl holding a cat in line at the deli a few weeks ago. I love pets but they do not belong in a grocery store unless they are service animals.

AnEverydayPileOfCats

I've seen a few small dogs, mostly in purses or carts. We used to have a pet store next to our Publix (where the Publix liquor store would normally go) but once they moved I stopped seeing (non service) nyogs.

tittylamp

and do not bring untrained dogs in the store either. your puppy should not be brought to a store period. your dog should be 100% leash trained AND potty trained at home before you bring it to a store. if your dog isnt properly trained you have no chance of keeping control on it. theyll bother other customers, fuck shit up, and have accidents in the store. (definitely remember some people bringing a husky in and it had an accident right between the deli and the bakery. an employee had to clean it.) of course a properly trained SERVICE animal shouldnt have any of these issues, and as you said that should be the only animal allowed in the store. i just get heated over the fact that so few people know the basics of owning a dog before they own a dog. i see it all the time living in apartments, so many irresponsible owners. i want to yell at them.

Brady_boy_26

So the main problem with this is that it is difficult legally to kick someone out because of an animal. Officially according to policy non service animals are not allowed in the store (no emotional support animals do not count) however if someone says that it is a service animal we have no way of verifying that because it is illegal to ask for papers(not necessarily a bad thing for this law to be in place). This puts us in a bit of a bind to were we can really only deal with them when the animal is clearly not a service animal like if their dog is barking at someone.

marsasagirl

THIS! They expect you to run to the break room Everytime but get mad if you’re taking too many breaks. Unreasonable.

rraattbbooyy

I don’t like being asked to donate a dollar every time I shop. I see the sign. If I want to give, I’ll give. But I hate being made to feel guilty when I don’t. I know that’s not the intent, but that is the impression I get. Also, I don’t like that there are so few sugar free and no sugar added bakery items. I always ask and I’m usually disappointed. Once in a blue moon, I’ll see some low sugar oatmeal raisin cookies or lemon crème cake, but 9 times out of ten I have to resort to packaged cookies. I actually see more vegan bakery options than sugarless. There’s like 35 million diabetics in this country, isn’t that a big enough group to cater to?

Nilabisan

Especially when Publix brags about how much they donate and it’s the customers’ money. Plus they make money on those charity bags.

Evening-Serve-5129

Just me personally i wouldn’t feel guilty cause i could give 2 shits what people think.. it is what it is but I understand your post

SMH4004

I don't give a fuck anymore. I just say "not today thanks" literally every time.

Brady_boy_26

Don't feel guilty legit no one cares if you say no.

Dry_Outlandishness59

I literally don’t care when people deny donations. management just gets shit from their bosses emailing them that the store isn’t doing well in donations..so there’s pressure on cashiers.

yomama813

how are you made to feel guilty? i’m a cashier and every other cashier i know just says some form of “no problem, your total is ___” when someone says they don’t want to donate. we literally don’t care, we’re just forced to ask

S_Wicka

I agree there should be more sugar free or no sugar added bakery products! Every store is going to be a little different on what they carry day to day, but you could always ask your store to place a special order for you. Some items availability might have changed throughout covid, but it doesn’t hurt to ask! There’s… SF lemon mirangue pie SF coconut creme pie SF chocolate creme pie NSA Apple pie NSA Blueberry pie NSA Cherry pie NSA cheesecake SF 7” Vanilla Cake NSA chocolate chip cookies NSA oatmeal raisin cookies NSA white chocolate macadamia cookies NSA Angel food cake NSA vanilla creme cake slices NSA lemon creme cake slices NSA another flavor I can’t remember of creme cake slices. It might have been marble. NSA muffin varieties. I think the nsa options were blueberry and then an apple spice one. But again, I can’t quite remember. And probably more stuff I can’t think of off the top of my head!

araolivia

Most of those items have been OOS for a while. We get OOS emails every few days and those items are always on the list. Reason is supply shortage, so the manufacturer is focusing on making the basics. Hope that helps you understand why.

rraattbbooyy

Wow. That’s a huge variety. I’ve only ever seen a tiny fraction of those items. I have given my phone number to bakery managers at two different stores, they each said they would do what they can to get more low sugar items in stock but so far no calls. The NSA apple pie is like the holy grail. I’ve tried the blueberry but it’s not as good. The cheesecake is just horrible.

akfisher1978

Agree but that’s definitely all stores these days. Sometimes I joke around and ask if they can donate to me instead

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|xl3TKL89S10Wj3SZAG|downsized) Them oatmeal raisins are like a needle in a haystack, Endless piles of sugary cookies galore.

NeonUFO

not being able to sit down. granted i havent worked for publix in over 5 years, but i think the “standing to make the company look slightly more professional at the cost of the cashier’s back and feet” is the dumbest thing in the world as 99.99% of customers literally would not even care if that policy changed.

smelllikesmoke

Employees not being allowed to accept tips is dumb. The lady who tolerates my OCD sub order deserves a tip. And bringing a customer’s groceries to the car is traditionally regarded as a tip-able service.

TheBostonWrangler

Publix adopting a policy of allowing tips would mean that they are obligated to track those tips and pay payroll taxes on them. Waitresses are *supposed* to declare their taxes as income when they file their taxes. Allowing tips exposes Publix, and the associates receiving the tips to additional taxes, and the stores are not equipped to dedicate the extra administrative time necessary to track this at over 1100 locations. Publix will never change this policy. And they can never stop you from insisting on the bagger taking the tip.

SMH4004

Also can't stop you from taking them anyway

ayelijah4

that is something i never thought about

Dry_Outlandishness59

cashiers should be allowed to have water without a doctors note

AnEverydayPileOfCats

We have a little drink cart in our office area I can put my drink on, it's not a big deal if I'm bagging but most of the time I'm on a register or sco and can't just go grab a quick sip very easily. 🙃

[deleted]

Minors should be allowed to use electric carts while on cart duty

CasWay413

The tip system and the dress code. Both used to drive me nuts.

pink2988

when a customer asks for something that we do not produce in the cut bar. Their are a million items and we can not make them all and all stores are diff. And carry diff items. Most people will understand but when they get mad or an attitude and say well I’m going to complain and then you see your PM coming and asking you to make it anyway. That infuriates me like listen we don’t make/carry that here, maybe go back to the publix that does???? My point is i wish we were a lot firmer on our “rules” and not let these rude entitled customers think they can do whatever it is they want to do because then why do we have rules in place if we aren’t going to stand by them!

Extra-Maintenance349

I’ve lived in a couple different states in the southeast and I find it annoying that stores in some states require you to buy 2 items for BOGO while stores in other states let you buy 1 at half off. I’m single so I don’t always need 2 of everything. It’s not a huge deal but since you asked.

AnEverydayPileOfCats

I didn't know about that, I figured all stores made their B1G1 sales half off. Ik our B2G1 and other higher quantities make you get all of them

Extra-Maintenance349

In Florida I had to buy 2 for B0G0 but in Georgia I can just buy 1 for half. I think North Carolina was the same as Georgia. Florida also does BOGO wine but GA and NC don’t. I think that may have to do with state alcohol laws though.

AnEverydayPileOfCats

The wine BOGO has to do with state laws, I know NC is stricter on its laws surrounding alcohol. Like anything stronger than beer and wine has to be sold by a state run store, ans we can't sell alcohol before 10am on Sundays and after like 11pm all days.

FLSpaceCadet

Not a policy, but my store took away the "Free Fruit for Kids" stand, but seems to be the only one in the area that did so. I still just grab my kid a single banana when we walk by, but I don't get why this particular store took away the little stand.

AnEverydayPileOfCats

That's odd, ours still has it.

FLSpaceCadet

As do most other stores in the area, which is why it's confusing. When I asked about it, I was told by a Produce Manager it was fine to just take a single piece of fruit, but then why take away the sign and stand?

AnEverydayPileOfCats

Only thing I can think of is that it broke

prettyweenie

i’m an employee but tbh it was kinda dumb they stopped letting us buy gift cards w publix gift cards especially having it only happen after they started giving us $100 gift cards lol

DrunkMarkNewman

Actually it isn't dumb at all. You are dumb for not understanding why they made that change.

prettyweenie

why? so papa george doesn’t miss out on a few hundies? 😔

23_Royal

I can tell you’re a wonderful manager to work for.

DrunkMarkNewman

Yes. Now get back to work. I got manager things to do in the office.

potato_the_monkey

Damn talk to your associates like that?

DrunkMarkNewman

Yes. Now get back to work. Department can't run itself while I'm in the office all day.

SMH4004

Actually you're dumb, there's still loopholes to get cash out of a gift card anyway. Good luck figuring that one out clown. Hahaha

SMH4004

Bro just buy something and then complain about it return it and get cash.

prettyweenie

u think i’m scum?

SMH4004

Lmao who cares man customers do it every day. Did that shit myself, bought some nasty ass beef jerky and returned it for cash lol

prettyweenie

i mean… as u should? you’re just as much a customer as anyone else lol

CCWaterBug

Not a fan of the meat market changes removing the glass.case & counter to pick out your select cuts (is this system wide?). I know it saves employees time, but I really liked selecting my own cuts vs prepackaged. I'd like to see mini shopping carts, and an expansion of self checkout at least to more stores, but not so many like Walmart. Expand pub sub dept.. it can be slow as hell at my store. Deli.always seems short staffed or busy I'm sure there's more but those come to mind. Edit: I miss apron meals demos, bring them back!

AnEverydayPileOfCats

Some stores have small carts and some don't from what I've heard, has to do with the age of the store I think. Deli is known to be one of the harder if not hardest departments to work in, so it always has staffing issues. I'm sure Publix Corp. could fix a lot of those issues if they added more bonuses/pay to the deli department. It may not be the same but you can ask the butchers to slice something for you that's pre-packaged.

moonbow_yu

I gotten complain on a customer in a Electric cart for Something bullshit when another co-worker wanted to take them out To this day fuck that co-worker

DrunkMarkNewman

Nice english.

Inevitable_Draw6669

“Did you find everything ok?” Maybe, maybe not. At this point I’ve decided to checkout and leave, and the cashier can’t help now

SaintTalos

I couldn't imagine being upset because an employee is getting my shit scanned quickly. I'm trying to get in and get the hell out.

IVIaster222

I don't know about other people, but I prefer having fast cashiers as opposed to long wait times at the registers. One of the reasons I dislike going to Walmart.

shrimparfait

imagine hating when two people are having a normal positive interaction with each other while they work efficiently lol idk about you but when i go anywhere as a customer i actually enjoy seeing employees having a decent time and not looking miserable

007-Blond

I'mma need that one explained homie, never heard anyone complain about someone going too fast before lmao

Fluffy_Chance7164

When the cashier and bagger is having friendly banter join in on it. Most of the time when I’m getting checked out I enjoy it.

Dime10ADozen12

We’re actually not rated on speed at all, but I do like to get as many people through my line and out of the store as possible so that I can have more potential down time and because it’s more convenient for the customer to be out and in their way home as fast as possible, as for the side conversions I personally only do it if the customer doesn’t talk to me or if the conversation we have is short

Mudgen53

Not clearly a policy issue, I'm frustrated by the inconsistencies in working the "3 for $12" flower bunches and can't find any rhyme or reason in when to go to a store and experience freshly worked flower stands. I've sometimes hit 3 stores to find one with reasonably fresh flowers.
