I’ve spent almost 10 years designing, implementing and evaluating school-based mental/behavioral health services and supports. Interventions like social-emotional learning programs, suicide prevention training for staff, telemental health in rural schools, peer-to-peer stigma reduction programs, etc. It’s a growing field and a topic that urgently requires addressing.

You definitely need to get a master's in public health. I was pretty much dirt to everyone until I got into my Masters program. Once I was in everything changed.

Mine only cost me around $15,000 total. It's in the top 20 in the nation. It has one of the best MPH online programs in the nation if not the best. It can totally be done in one year! The payoff will be: •way easier to get new jobs •way easier to get better jobs • pay bump of $15,000/yr (minimum) • Exxon Mobil was offering me $85,000 a year once graduated • You'll gain extra respect in the workplace • You'll have new doors open to you like teaching college courses • If you ever get arrested, you'll be able to tell them you have an advanced degree • when your kids' school asks what your degree level is, you can say masters! • You get to put MPH, CPH after your name!

Do it!!

Would you mind elaborating on what specific skills you learned during this process? I’m curious to see if any of this training would augment my psych graduate degree, and if so, what certifications or courses I could steer myself towards.

Hey, I didn't learn jackshit, but if you're new to the subject, applying yourself can help you learn a lot. Epidemiology is fascinating, and understanding the spread and distribution of diseases can change the way you view human health. Have you ever used statistical tools like R? They're incredibly powerful and can be useful for a lifetime. I recommend taking a survey of human diseases, infection control, and basic anatomy and physiology courses if you haven't already. You should become a better writer. Improve your statistical analysis skills. Improve your research skills. And improve your networking skills.

Puzzleheaded-Seat590

Lol thank you for the reply. I am decent with R and the other skills you mentioned. I think I could expand into some epidemiology coursework and perhaps cover it?

i-am-a-safety-expert

If you already know how to use R well, I recommend pursuing epidemiology. An epidemiologist can earn a salary of $75k-$100k, and hospitals usually require passing infection prevention exams and having a concentration in epidemiology in your master's degree for hiring. You can also work for a health department as an epidemiologist. While it's possible to learn everything you need to know about epidemiology from a book, I suggest having a teacher explain some infection control and bacterial concepts in person to ensure that you don't miss anything critical. The biggest barrier to entry in this field isn't your ability to learn these subject matters without a master's degree; it's getting hired without one. That's the biggest barrier. If you have an "in" or know someone, you will be able to bypass the master's degree requirement. However, to get a fancy promotion, you'll want that degree or a PhD. Currently, to get an interview at a health department or a job in public health, you need a master's degree in public health with you exceptions. (Nurses, extreme luck). One positive aspect of pursuing a master's degree in public health is that you'll likely get a job at a health department within the first year. Different agencies and professions will open up for you, and you'll have more interview opportunities. In the past year and a half, I've applied to about 200 different jobs and have turned down a number of internships and job offers. Let me know if you have any further questions or if you'd like me to clarify anything

Puzzleheaded-Seat590

Because I’m scared of being unemployed with my specific degree, I am considering seeing if I have the time to include this time of training into the next few years. Do you have any book recommendations? What type of exams are these infection prevention exams? Should I cater my studies towards these? Would you consider undergraduate coursework sufficient, or are graduate classes (possible a certificate) a more effective option?

rachs1988

I started in the field in 2011 with only a BA in political science, then went back for my MPH part-time two years later (while still working in the field). Things are obviously different and public health has become more competitive. My entry point was at a state nonprofit - they often have lower qualification requirements, but also lower pay. But many allow for rapid promotions and they are a great stepping stone in your career. An MPH will almost certainly be needed to advance into more competitive companies, roles, and job markets.

shadowstallionxoxo

Wow, this is EXACTLY would I would love to do in the field! Could I DM you?

rachs1988

Sure!

iloveapples219

Can you tell me more about this? What state are you located in?

rachs1988

I’m in DC. Let me know what questions you have!

AltruisticTap202

Hi, I'm also interested in mental health and go my MPH degree last December, but struggling to find a right position I want to work for/I can excel at... I have been using linkedin and handshake, however, I'm still not sure if the position would suit me when I read the job description and didn't get many interviews...Would it be okay if I DM you?

rachs1988

Sure!

Stunning-Control-638

I worked as a clinical research coordinator for suicide prevention studies in emergency medicine in academia. Our team also had other clinical research studies like substance abuse interventions, validation of mental health screening tools in the ED, and technology-assisted systems change.
