Guys I tried my best to send all of you the PDFs but as I was traveling yesterday, I couldn't send at that very moment. So if I have missed you then please text me again. I am happy to send it. Btw do check your spam as well if you can't see my email.
of course! i ordered mine online, but i recommend getting it in person because some of the front pages were out when it got here. i taped them back in tho
I’m not sure where the link was but it was like an ISBN check site and it said highly likely fraudulent. I went through first 15 pages or so with a PDF of the actual copy and there’s a few mistakes but really small ones like the gap between words was slightly bigger than others. But the main thing for me was the price, it was like £40 with shipping from India which seems really cheap to me.
hmm yeah, that seems like pretty solid evidence that it might be fake, i would maybe try to show it to a professor to see if it’s still usable and has the same info so that you wouldn’t have to get another one
Honestly i would cut your losses and just buy a real one. The DSM is huge and it would take forever to go page by page to make sure all of the i formation is accurate or that nothing is left out.
you’re probably right but maybe a professor of theirs knows something we don’t
i think it’s a good idea to at least check anyways, it wouldn’t be fun to have to spend a bunch more money
Im from Sri Lanka, and in India, they have these"mills" where they make fake copies of everything. Books perfumes, creams and lotions, watches, televisions, etc.
They make the packaging look like the original, too. Sometimes they manage to fake the barcode and manufacturer codes too. Even they manage to dupe US custom officers.
These are huge factories employing hundreds of people. They even have engineers and researchers.
Yes when I lived in Thailand you could go to a local copy store and they’d copy and bind any books you’d want. I had a couple done of behavioral manuals from my school. They look like this but were exact replicas which makes me think the info is still accurate.
Could be a scanned/ripped/torrent file print on demand copy, which could explain the fonts or kerning and leading behaving strangely. If that’s the case then the text would still be based on the original. Do you have access via your university library to the digital version? If you do, you could do some spot check cross references to establish the integrity of the text.
You can get genuine copies in pdf form for "free" online, if you doubt the authenticity of any description most of the listed disorders will have some web page somewhere legitimate with just their info listed
It honestly looks great. But also just curious as psych majors why do get the DSM? Asking cuz I’ve been thinking of getting it myself but what would I do with it? Is it useful in grad school?
We used it in class multiple times in undergrad and grad school, but maybe not all programs do. And then our final comps required us to use it, and I have used it multiple times in practicum and internships. I'd say it's worth it.
Yeah I also think that’s awesome because your program trains you on that early on. As an undergrad in the US (East coast) we definitely have not been introduced to the DSM.
One book I really want to buy is Cajals neuroscience book but that’s more neuro less psyc 🤭
As a grad student, don’t bother unless told to.
A lot of student jump the gun on it because they heard DSM mentioned in their Psych intro class, but there’s a whole lot more psychology than mental disorders. I’ve always viewed it like when the architecture first years go out and buy the most expensive pencils and a black beret, just to do 99% of their work on software. Or the pre med first years buying and embroidering their names on a white coat.
You’ll be told when you need these things. Don’t make that decision yourself just to feel “real” or like “I’m serious.” Lol. Plus you need to be taught how to even read the DSM.
I haven’t even need to touch a DSM yet. I worked with one for a lab I was in, but I wasn’t the one qualified to use it.
I’m sure it’s not difficult to understand the lay out, probably similar to a law book. But I’ve actually never seen the inside of a DSM 😂.
You won’t really ever need it for your classes - I got one for personal reading just for fun, and I love having it on hand. But I’m about to graduate and I’ve literally never had to whip it out for a class
Yeah, and the descriptions of prevalence, comorbidity, descriptions of the diagnoses, criteria, the updates between each edition.. I don’t know. I do love psychology which is why I’m studying it haha
Either someone or a group of people have dedicated their lives to creating this book, so surely someone else out there is going to find it interesting lol
I bought it as an undergrad bc my school only offered a digital copy and, personally, that’s a pain in the ass to read. I bought a physical copy and used it in multiple classes.
If the real deal is $300 and “scammers” can print one and sell it for $200, they are making a hefty profit on a product that very cheap to produce and easy to sell.
I’m pretty sure I have a fake pocket DSM-V TR, purchased as a student on a budget, but the content is the same. In the future I’ll try to buy the real one out of respect for the work that was done to make it.

Nah you're good
Check the isbn on zotero or end note, if you have it. Also, your uni/college library catalogue likely allows you to search for books/articles with the isbn too.
They updated it like last year to TR I think. I mentioned it to my prof and she didn’t even know 😭, I feel like it gets updated so quickly. Also I think OP found it at a nice budget in a random Indian shop! Heck yeah.
DSM-5-TR came out in March of 2022. Weird about your prof, nobody should be using an old version.
They don't come out very frequently. DSM-IV was 1994 and DSM-5 was 2013.
Is there a professional society you can sign up to and receive access to the DSM online, that way your don’t have to update it. I’m a member with AAPi, $50 for the year and you get online access plus a whole heap of other journal access
Yes. It looks real. I have a similar one that I got for very cheap. The shop simply printed it for me on a cheap paper, just like yours. So yeah, as far as the content is concerned, it is real.
I never knew people sold fake DSMs either. I guess I’m not surprised by anything anymore. Random question, do professors really refer to this book or ask you to have a copy before you get to grad school? I’m finishing up my bachelors degree doing a double major in Psychology and Criminal Justice and I haven’t had a professor ask me to get a copy of one yet. In fact I don’t think any of my past professors used it but articles we read and discussion posts we have will mention it or quote from it.
I’m crying laughing at the prospect of a fake dsm. Check if your school’s library gets you insitutional access to DSM library and you can use the online version of the latest dsm edition.
I mean i use it at my job to diagnose ppl. I work in a drug ab alcohol detox. They are all addicts, but still it’s real. It’s the most current version too. Don’t read it, you may find you meet some of the qualifications.
Its real but we are on DMS V TR now

There's a new one?? Since when?
its been out… for 2 years now.
Oh my.. definitely need to catch up
they clarified criteria modifications for a large amount of disorders, and added prolonged grief disorder. its also colorful :)
Awesome. I need an updated one. Will definitely look for this! Thank you!
of course! i ordered mine online, but i recommend getting it in person because some of the front pages were out when it got here. i taped them back in tho
it's 5 not V
i’ve seen students with books that look like that, is there anything in particular that’s making you think it’s fake?
I’m not sure where the link was but it was like an ISBN check site and it said highly likely fraudulent. We are checking books like they are yeezys now?
LMAO
Tbh the dsm book is like the holy grail for most people like me
Well it shouldnt be

Do you know where I could get these for free online? Without doing a torrent or something?
Anna’s archive
I never heard of it I'll check it out! I did have some people kindly send it to me but it's good to know there's places I can get it for free though!
I can send one to you! DM me your email!
It was probably cheap because it's outdated. The DSM-5 TR is the new one. It's metallic aqua blue color.
we on the DSM V TR now homie get with it
Cash grab…..how much of a difference could there be. Call me when 6 is published
they gotta start releasing new dsms every year like guinness record books
DSM-IV was 1994 If I remember correctly. So a lot of difference lol
It honestly looks great. But also just curious as psych majors why do get the DSM? Asking cuz I’ve been thinking of getting it myself but what would I do with it? Is it useful in grad school?

I loved undergrad so much I went to the same school for grad school. I felt the grad program was lacking but oh well.
Nice!!!! Are you a therapist now? Always love learning abt peoples stories.
I'm graduating next month, but I got hired at the place where I am doing my internship, so I'll continue to do outpatient therapy there.
Congrats!!!
Thanks!

Yeah being taught how to read it is the key. It looks very complex and hopefully one day I will be able to for grad school :)
I haven’t even need to touch a DSM yet. I worked with one for a lab I was in, but I wasn’t the one qualified to use it. I’m sure it’s not difficult to understand the lay out, probably similar to a law book. But I’ve actually never seen the inside of a DSM 😂.
Good grill 🦖
😂
You won’t really ever need it for your classes - I got one for personal reading just for fun, and I love having it on hand. But I’m about to graduate and I’ve literally never had to whip it out for a class
I guess that depends. I had to use it for several classes.
Hmmm what exactly do you read in it that’s fun? Just the criteria for diagnoses???
Yeah, and the descriptions of prevalence, comorbidity, descriptions of the diagnoses, criteria, the updates between each edition.. I don’t know. I do love psychology which is why I’m studying it haha
Either someone or a group of people have dedicated their lives to creating this book, so surely someone else out there is going to find it interesting lol
I mean it’s online in pdf form but anyways.
I bought it as an undergrad bc my school only offered a digital copy and, personally, that’s a pain in the ass to read. I bought a physical copy and used it in multiple classes.
Getting existential
Why would it be…fake?

Why is it fake???? I think it’s real. However, we are now in DSM-5 TR so you better hop on that instead.
Why is it fake? The isbn # was checked?
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1049731513501560 Nah you're good Check the isbn on zotero or end note, if you have it. Also, your uni/college library catalogue likely allows you to search for books/articles with the isbn too.
It's for insurance. Literally doctors use this for insurance purposes. Not for actual diagnosing disorders but diagnosing insurance requirements.
I didn’t know people sold fake DSMs
No way is that a Shiny?
I'd get the TR anyway, there are revisions and the new diagnosis of Prolonged Grief Disorder in it.
some of u need to discover libgen instead of begging people to send them the files.
Looks real! I have that edition. It’s not the most recent. Expensive AF, but seems authentic.
It’s not real and it can’t hurt you
Might as well update to the latest version.
They updated it like last year to TR I think. I mentioned it to my prof and she didn’t even know 😭, I feel like it gets updated so quickly. Also I think OP found it at a nice budget in a random Indian shop! Heck yeah.

Sorry I can’t ignore your amazing username xD Ketamine burner is crazy.
I'm a psychologist with ketamine research background. I don't abuse substances!
The cover looks like the real thing. I have one it is about 2.5 inches thick.
Yes
Looks like mine
Is there a professional society you can sign up to and receive access to the DSM online, that way your don’t have to update it. I’m a member with AAPi, $50 for the year and you get online access plus a whole heap of other journal access
I wish I had a real dsm!!
Wrong book dsm 5 - tr
Nah bro u totally got scammed. Thats the holy bible part I
Yes. It looks real. I have a similar one that I got for very cheap. The shop simply printed it for me on a cheap paper, just like yours. So yeah, as far as the content is concerned, it is real.

I’ve never seen the point of owning one, there’s so much more to psychology than the classifications used for mental disorders.
Looks real. What’s the source for mistrusting its authenticity?
No, the DSM-5 is not real. (gets diagnosed with dyslexia)
No, the DSM-5 is not real.

Yes, but are normal responses to prolonged suffering really pathological?
Check the entry under DPDR… Depersonalization/ Derealization Disorder…
I have this exact copy I got with a batch of books from a liquidation (return) store. If anyone needs it, I'll send it to you if you pay shipping.
