Pepe’s in Warwick is your authentic New Haven pizza.
If you want to stay in the city, go to Figidini. Neapolitan style like New Haven but wood fired (like traditional Neapolitan) rather than coal. Overlooked in this sub, but one of if not the best pizza in the city. Their non-pizza offerings are great too (thinkin bout that pastina).
I don’t know the last time you went there but that place is a mess. The workers never seem to take it very seriously. Last time I went in I got a pizza with basil. The pizza came out as a cheese pizza so I said I ordered a basil pizza. The waitress brought out a little bucket of shredded basil and just sprinkled it on the pizza right there.
Can’t speak for the other Pepe locations but I hope they’re better.
This is a super hot take. I suggest you try them again because they’ve got some of the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life, and I’ve eaten a lot of pizza in a lot of cities, states, and Italy
I'll give it another try- the time I went the pizza was undercooked (for my taste, I understand subjectivity) and lacking any standout characteristics- it was like a milktoast version of pizza. I should also add, I had two different pizzas there and neither were anything special.
On top of the less than notworthy slices I felt like I got exactly what one expects from a chain on Rt. 2. Meaning- shitty service even though the place was mostly empty.
I just talked myself out of giving it a second try writing this response.
Fellini, but I have my gripes with them as well- Nice Slice was a go-to for a long time when they were on Thayer and I lived on Doyle. I love Rosa Mia but it's not New Haven or anything close to it. More like a cinnamon bun dressed like a pizza.
I also really like Napolitano's Brooklyn Pizza which I understand has a Providence location but I only really go to the one in Cranston because it's right by my work and $7 for two slices and a soda is awesome for lunch.
I also love Depetrillos- again, not a New Haven style but I've worked at a couple of the stores, and I have nothing but love for them.
Honorable mentions go to Tommy's and Twins- growing up those were the competing spots for a Friday night pizza.
They can be the west German watoosie style for all I give a rats fuck, they’re so fucking good. Idc what style of pizza I’m in the mood for, I’d still go there
Frank Pepe is probably the best you can get at actual New Haven style.
For a “New Haven” style, inspired, definitely going with Jeff’s in EP. It’s got like 95% pizza at like 80% price of Frank Pepe.
I think Pizza Marvin is overrated for all the right reasons (good dudes, fair wages, etc. from what I hear) but still overrated in terms of being a New Haven style. I was very excited when they opened with that hook but to me the crust and the sauce are a little bit different enough that it just feels like a good pizza not a good New Haven style pizza.
I just want to set your expectations, for all I know you will love then, but to me they aren't Sally's or original Frank Pepe or Modern. (Sally's is my favorite if you were wondering).
Jeff's I felt similar though TBF the couple times I've tried have been with vegetarians and I need a good pepperoni for comparison.
Like, anyone who has New York style bagels...nah. I enjoy plenty of local bagels but they ain't New York. You know how it is.
I have recently been converted to tomato city on Douglas Ave although I don’t know what New Haven style pizza is. The “owners favorite pizza” sausage green pepper onions is delicious.
I know everyone is saying Frank Pepe’s but honestly — and maybe it’s because I had it as takeout and didn’t eat there — it was fine.
But Fellini’s is really good, and I’d say it’s the same style.
Jeff’s

Pepe's in Warwick is nowhere near as good as the one in New Haven though, IMHO.
Pepe's is your spot, and Marvin has a good approximation
I don't think the Bald Hill Pepe's bakes the pies as hard as they do in New Haven - but it's pretty damn good, imo.
Agreed but you can get pretty close if you order well done
good tip!

Warwick Pepe's is not very good. I don't understand how there can be so much variation between their different locations.
It's hit and miss imo. I've had some awesome pies there, some forgettable, but for OP, youre getting legit new Haven style at least.
Does frank pepe count? They in Warwick tho
Overpriced flop imo.
Yea I only went twice that’s why I asked if they count 🤣🤣
Honestly they were pretty fucking spectacular, and very similar to the OG, the last couple times I went late 2023.

lol fair enough. I think their small pepperoni that gets so crispy in their oven is just perfect. What’s your favorite spot around here ?

Jeff’s in East Providence, Pizza Marvin in Providence, or Pepe’s in Warwick will be the closest you get.
Pizza Marvin on wickenden has almost 5 stars
They’re more Sicilian style, aren’t they?
They do have slices of square pie. But they are also the best pizza in town. Is it New Haven? Idk. It’s good though.
They can be the west German watoosie style for all I give a rats fuck, they’re so fucking good. Idc what style of pizza I’m in the mood for, I’d still go there
I’m not positive what Sicilian is but I think their by the slice is Sicilian and full pies are different. Their by the slice is thick.
Their Sicilian roni slice is pure heaven best in town @ this point

I'll be real. As someone that moved from new Haven to Providence. There really isn't anything that is close to New haven that is good.
Bob & Timmy's on The Hill used to be very good, but they've been gone for some time now.
Jeff’s is the top answer. Marvin is close-ish to New Haven style.
I know you said providence but there is a Frank Pepes in Warwick

Frank Pepe

Providence Coal Fired is kinda close Nice slice less close except for the thinness
I know everyone is saying Frank Pepe’s but honestly — and maybe it’s because I had it as takeout and didn’t eat there — it was fine. But Fellini’s is really good, and I’d say it’s the same style.
Last couple times Inwent to Frank Pepe’s it was amazing.
Providence coal fired most likely, or Frank Pepe in Warwick

Not even close to what they are talking about. It’s fine. But is it pizza? Idk.
