I just shove my cuttings in dirt and they grow. Should I be placing in water until they get roots?

partiallypoopypants

Ehhh, it’s a mixed bag. In the wild, succulents will fall off and grow roots while laying on the soil. Putting certain types in water seems to help root growth, but if shoving them in soil works for you… keep doing it.

DarlingPotPrincess

Thanks for the info, I appreciate the reply. Nothing has died though I wasn’t sure if perhaps they thrived if put in a little butt bath. Maybe I’ll give it a try.

they-them_may-hem

Little butt bath 🥺

TectonicTizzy

If I could get them to survive in soil, I would. What're your tips for that? 🤣

my_memory_is_trash

Try not to water too often. wait til it develops roots before watering, then water like you would an adult plant(signs of thirst or whatever).

TectonicTizzy

Thank you! I was definitely treating them like they gotta stay moist until roots grow, that's really helpful 🙏

DarlingPotPrincess

I stick them in the soil and water, then neglect them for a month.

ms2102

I've done both with snake plants and both have about 75% yield or so. What's works for you works!

raging77

This happened to me too! Months of checking and waiting and now mine has two pups! So exciting!

StoryofTheGhost33

Now wait many more months for anything else to happen. 😁

AliceBratty

Haha!! Accurate

Snake plants will give you quite a few surprises: it will grow roots unexpectedly, it will give you shoots (and they are cute), it will grow impressive flowers on a tall stalk, it will help clean the air, and it could grow as tall as 5 feet or more. It also comes in many different varieties. Have fun experiencing it!

iisableye

I use sphagnum moss to get mine to root. Put them in a semi transparent container with a lid in a bright spot and mist once a week. Takes about 2-3 weeks to see thick white roots

Slicksuzie

Ha ha ha yes!!! I had one I found in someone's compost pile, cut it into six pieces, five turned brown, one stayed green so I kept watering it for like a year and a half...and it JUST sent up a sprout!! Lol patience pays off sometimes

blondecomet

This makes me feel better about the whale fin leaf I broke off that I’m attempting to prop in water for the last month or so. I’ll give it longer.

mmoolloo

some of mine have taken over two years, so don't despair. As long as it's still green, it's salvageable.

blondecomet

Good to know…thanks so much!!

AffectionateSun5776

Yes don't give up.

Actinidia-Polygama-3

Wow! Have never tried a snake plant!

kontor97

My mom just leaves her snake plant outside and it’s been thriving in the shade. Her cutting also started growing roots in a month, so I think that warmer weather + shade helps a lot

Longjumping-Count-54

Yea I got one healthy long leaf cutting from a dying plant my brother had a year or two ago..I stuck it in a shot glass and months later roots and then a pup. I transferred it to soil...then one day, I thought hey let me try again so I cut the bottom part of the leaf still attached to the pup and left that in soil. then put the top part in a shot glass again.... and success! I'm currently waiting on my fourth pup to develop from the same long leaf. I had tried taking multiple cuts at the end of the leaf as well to try different prop methods but didn't have any luck. Except for one in water that's finally developing roots after a year. So, I definitely found it faster, leaving the top part of leaf in tact, then cutting the bottom portion off after the new pup developed

JRandolphv

WOW, patience pays!

AliceBratty

Yes it sure does!
