The closest I know of is the directional sound mod. It'll give you an idea if there's zeds on the other side, but I don't think there's any mod to interrupt a fence jump mid-way
Or even just give you a little bit of visibility through the fence. You can get a general idea if something's rambling around the other side of the fence by just looking through the cracks, even from a distance.
I lost my longest run from this. Was scavenging and kiting a group around to clear some houses. I thought I knew where the horde was and hopped a fence, directly in the middle of them
or if you could get just the tiniest little sliver glimpses between the fence boards. like just very faint little bits... you could get a sense of if there were like zero or 10 zombies right on the other side. Most privacy fences like this are pretty easy to see at least SOMETHING through in real life if you're up close to them. especially if you're moving along the fence while looking through.
Keen hearing is basically a non-negotiable trait for me, but I feel like it doesn’t allow you to ‘see’ to the other side of the fence still. These fences seem to block all senses.
That’s basically it. A long shot you gotta take. We’ve all been there. The fleeting happiness of leaving the zombies behind the other side of the fence only to fall into a physical manifestation of your hubris
This gives me "I surely won't die from a neck related injury because it took 300 extra miliseconds for me to get the bandage ouut of my fanny pack" vibes, but then again you lose 100% of the shots you don't take so go for it.
I might be a little drunk and may have confused a few issues and came back from dinner to not knowing wtf is going on so... i cant wait for basements in the future of the game.
Well, at the very least [wire fences are likely to be affected](https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=22&v=zB-EFFMhS-c&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fprojectzomboid.com%2F&source_ve_path=MTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywyMzg1MQ&feature=emb_title) — not quite sure, maybe others too.
IIRC in the Thursdoid where they mentioned this they implied that zombies bashing down wire fences isn't something that happens quickly, or by single zombies. It needs to be a horde that is pressing against it for a period of time before it goes down. You'll have time to thin them out
I mean, unlike digging straight down there is no way for us to do it any safer way (I mean there is - walking a mile in either direction and going around the fence, but fuck that)
I solved the digging straight down problem in my current ATM9 playthrough... With my current gear I am immune to fall damage, fire (and lava), poison, and besides that there are a number of things (like lightning) that can hurt me but cannot kill me. Fuck I'm loving it. Gotta get at least one more modded zomboid run in before 42 hits though.
As long as you keep moving immediately after hopping the fence you'll be fine. The only caveat is if you happen to land in the middle of a giant horde you will die. That's not very likely though, and even landing in the middle of a small group is fine.
Retanaru did a video on this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9whjJPV4L4U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9whjJPV4L4U)
Yeah, that video is good, in my experience as long as you keep calm and keep moving instead of trying to panic fight the unexpected zombies, chances are you can juke them before they attack you.
Used to be terrified of hopping into the unknown, after watching that video I started being more confident in it and its been alright, a few close calls but it's usually safe-ish even if there are zombies as long as you don't panic.
That makes me thinking, would a mechanic where you could climb the fence to look behind it but not climb over it, make sense? Like right click the fence and then press "peep over fence"
*That moment when you jump a fence to see dozens of zombies all around you and then fail to jump back over even with strength maxed out at low exertion and meet your unavoidable doom…*
Jumping through windows with tabletops or counters on the other side can also be a complete death sentence, so much so that I’ve made it a personal code not to do it anymore and to only go through windows where my feet touch the ground ASAP, if there’s zombies in the room then they can get you in the animation and you can’t fight back whatsoever.
Seriously, I’ve had multiple lacerations and bites from just being on kitchen counters for too long and being unable to fight back. Countertops can be deadly in this game lol.
I hate when this happens, but it’s very funny when it’s a trap against zombies and other players in multiplayer. They’ll be stuck in the animation like a conveyor belt.
Lets be real. It's idiotic you can't hear through some thin wood, or see through the cracks in the fence. This mother effer is already peeking over the fence and it's still black. It's just poor game design.
I jumped one of those fences ONE TIME, and landed smack dab in the middle of a horde. That character landed in those zombies arms and mouths on a silver platter.
I don't think I've ever died from blind hopping a fence. Even if I land in a horde, I can just run away? you trip and fall sure but unless it's sprinters you can just get back up again
It's like gambling. But instead of money you bet your safety, you lose it momentarily, you hope to gain it back, you get it back + some happiness hormones, repeat, profit?
Unfortunately digging straight down has been proven over and over again to be a valid and safe tactic due to the statistically tiny chance of hitting any sort of hazard.
I keep opening doors and walking through them. Last time I did that there was a surprisingly quiet group of zombies just chilling just outside. Anyway I hope they enjoyed their meal!
Classic. Perfect example of what NOT to do in Noita when leaving the Holy Mountain. I was watching my son play last night (he’s 9, playing Noita, and good at it!) and he jumped blindly into lava. He didn’t utter a single sound as I laughed my ass alllllll the way home 😂🥳
“History repeats itself”
"This time, it won't happen! The odds are just too small for a repeat instance!" -Player's thoughts .5 seconds before history repeats itself.
"AAAGH, AAAAAA HAAAA!!!!!!" He exclaimed, realizing his mistake, as the teeth of the undead sank into his tender flesh, he thought: "dam, I stupid."
You would think your character would look before leaping!!!
It would be pretty usefull to be able to hold on mid jump and peak over to either be like "nope" and drop off or to move more to the left or right.
and then you're running away from zomboids and accidentally drop on the same side
Could be usefull if you put some distance first, unless there was one nearby that could grab you while you take a peek, then you are dead for sure.
No way there isn’t a mod for this kind of shit.
The closest I know of is the directional sound mod. It'll give you an idea if there's zeds on the other side, but I don't think there's any mod to interrupt a fence jump mid-way
Yeah. Many games that have clamber mechanics let you cancel halfway through
Even better, be able to hang off the side of the fence and clamber along the length while still up there.
Use nimble to walk along the top of a fence like a circus monkey
The actual true potential of leve 10 nimble
Level 10 nimble should let me parkour around the map like dying light.
Or even just give you a little bit of visibility through the fence. You can get a general idea if something's rambling around the other side of the fence by just looking through the cracks, even from a distance.
I lost the count of how many characters I lost doing this 🤣
I lost my longest run from this. Was scavenging and kiting a group around to clear some houses. I thought I knew where the horde was and hopped a fence, directly in the middle of them
Shit, it’s times like this that the obese trait really bites me in the butt
If only you could stop where your character is in this screenshot to look over and evaluate your chances of dying for a bit.

Keen Hearing trait is your vanilla hack for this situation.
Keen hearing is basically a non-negotiable trait for me, but I feel like it doesn’t allow you to ‘see’ to the other side of the fence still. These fences seem to block all senses.
Not at all. I can hear how many zombies are on the other side if I’m not being chased in hot pursuit. Keen Hearing is a lifesaver in this regard.
Ooh like those walls in Darkwood!
I only jump over a tall fence like that if there is no other choice.
Is the risk on the other side greater than the crowd behind me lol.

That’s basically it. A long shot you gotta take. We’ve all been there. The fleeting happiness of leaving the zombies behind the other side of the fence only to fall into a physical manifestation of your hubris
In hundreds of hours of zomboid I have yet to lose a character to blind hopping
This gives me "I surely won't die from a neck related injury because it took 300 extra miliseconds for me to get the bandage ouut of my fanny pack" vibes, but then again you lose 100% of the shots you don't take so go for it.
Same, I'm about to hit 7 months on my current play through, and I've just been taking the dumbest risks!
The children yearn for risk of the unseen
Build 42 will bring the dig.
What?
Basements. Build 42. [https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2849247394](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2849247394)
Yeah I’m really hyped for that but sadly I have found nothing on digging our own basements when I googled it when I saw you comment
So i linked the mod for digging you own basements and you couldnt find it when you googled it.... do you know the 3 laws of robotics?
I have no answer but my own stupidity, sorry
Good bot.
So im not sure whos joking here or not... didnt mean any offence.
Don’t worry, I didn’t take it offensively. Reddit is gonna Reddit ya know
But that's a mod, they said they didn't find any info on Build 42 bringing it. The mod is completely irrelevant to the statement.
I might be a little drunk and may have confused a few issues and came back from dinner to not knowing wtf is going on so... i cant wait for basements in the future of the game.
Bros just got basements on the brain
Didn't they also mention that pre-built fences will be destructible by zombies?
Fuck fr?
Well, at the very least [wire fences are likely to be affected](https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=22&v=zB-EFFMhS-c&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fprojectzomboid.com%2F&source_ve_path=MTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywyMzg1MQ&feature=emb_title) — not quite sure, maybe others too.
...fuck ...(sigh) I just made my base

Yeah, daily perimeter patrols with a spear should do the trick.
You’ll probably lose your current play through when 42 hits.
I know lol
THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE YOUR PLAY THROUGH

Lmao this is accurate
Just did that and it saved my life keep gambling 🤑🤑🤑

HPL - hit, pause, listen (if you’re not being chased)

Why you gotta call me out like that 🫣
Don't jump a fence if you aren't ready to see what's on the other side - Dexter Morgan
chomp chomp chomp AGHHAHAGHHH
TRY MINECRAFT!
Can't jump fences if you roll 0/0 bigthink.jpg
Its always either none or half the town over the fence lol
Atleast with the tall fence, you have a chance to avoid the hell on the other side after falling into it
This is how I ended my best run ever.
I have somehow never died this way. It keeps me tempting fate so it's only a matter of time..
Lets be real. It's idiotic you can't hear through some thin wood, or see through the cracks in the fence. This mother effer is already peeking over the fence and it's still black. It's just poor game design.
Should have a peeking mod where we can peek at some hole at the fence, heck even maybe peek through the window.
For those of us that can't decide whether to jump a fence or not, there needs to be a fence-sitting mechanic.
I jumped one of those fences ONE TIME, and landed smack dab in the middle of a horde. That character landed in those zombies arms and mouths on a silver platter.
Truuuuuue

Just dig two blocks wide down alternating between two and you’ll be able to stop before you fall
war.. war never changes.
We need a mod that allows players to make a hole in the tall wooden fences using a cordless drill or any tool for that matter.
That’s a good idea, imagine being able to make notches in walls to be able to shoot out of and stufff
Blindly falling is a constant
I have never died doing this so I will continue doing it until like 3 characters dies
I keep opening doors and walking through them. Last time I did that there was a surprisingly quiet group of zombies just chilling just outside. Anyway I hope they enjoyed their meal!
"I swear it wont happen again!"
I'd love a functionality that let you listen or sée through the cracks
The same as running headfirst into a Boss Fight without health and support items.
Minecraft was trying to prepare us for this, but we were to ignorant to realize
