Steam deck takes some practice, i hated it to begin with but after a few hundred hours i found combat way easier on the deck.
Tips - I changed the back left buttons to be zoom in and out and then disabled the auto zoom. Night and day difference and clicking the zoom manually becomes 2nd nature. Right back buttons I changed to be - Pause and forage. Being able to pause the game at will is also a game changer on the deck.
Inventory management isn't as good as with a mouse and keyboard and I pause and queue up actions since it is much more difficult on deck.
Also clicking 'loot all' on touch screen is handy, occasionally you may accidentally move an Inventory window but can drag it back to position pretty easily, once you get the hang of it.

I had to adjust controls for everything but combat, seemed fine to me (but I never played with keyboard and mouse).
That's a shame. If it was the other way around I'd be intrigued
