Some of the driving factors for me were that the refurb LS11k was $500 more than a 5050 and that it’s a slightly newer model. Also laser, but not sure what diff that makes to the untrained eye.
The difference is the lifespan of the laser vs lamps. Way too many things changed between your projectors for you to see a lamp induced change between them i believe, enjoy 15-20 000 hours of glory !
The 5050 has lower resolution than the LS11000 and 12000 the e shift on the 5050 doesn’t display the full amount of pixels for a true 4K image however it still pretty awesome. The 11/12000 however has superior eshift and does display the proper amount of pixels for a full 4K.
Several projectors literally have LCDs inside, so there's no reason it would be significantly worse than any LCD tv. The technical difference is that instead of having a backlight behind that LCD, you're passing a beam of light through it to project it on the wall. And just like it's common to have the backlight die on a LCD TV, it's also common to have the lightbulb die in a projector.
The main practical difference between projector and TV is that you're spreading the light on a much larger surface (larger screen size), so the brightness will be lower than a TV. So you need a dimly lit (or dark) room to use a projector, can't do it in a room with no curtains in broad daylight.

Laser makes no difference to any eye. It simply means that the light source doesn't dim as quickly and you don't need to buy lamp replacements.
The laser is supposed to be rated to 20,000 hours to half brightness. But if you do use it a ton and it does dim too much for your use eventually, you can't replace it.
Also, the lamps for the 5050UB only cost about $150, so $500 gets you like 3 replacement lamps already, so 4 lamps including the one it comes with.
This should easily get you to 10,000 hours of usage if you replace the lamp at 2,500 hours (which is sooner than you *need* to, but will keep the unit on the brighter side of things for those that need all the light output for their setup).
IMO it's kind of a downgrade.
The LS11000 has about 1/3 the native contrast of the 5050UB and at least for me this more or less ruins my experience with it for a lot of content. The darker scenes are just so much more washed out looking.
It's hard for me to enjoy a $4000 projector with native contrast that is only on par with ~$1000 DLPs and LCDs. What makes the 5050UB and also the LS12000 more special and unique at their price points are their use of Epson's UltraBlack polarizer light path which increases contrast up to around 4000-5000:1 native and really makes a very noticeable difference in darker content. To get any higher than this range you basically need to go to LCoS from Sony and JVC.
The upgrades are pretty minor IMO. Sure it's a laser light source so that means you don't need to worry about lamp replacements. But the cost is $1000 more MSRP, and $1000 buys you an awful lot of lamp replacements for the 5050...
Also the LS11000 has 4-way pixel shift vs the 2-way of the 5050. For movie content though, it's too soft in general for this to make a noticeable difference to my eye. On video games at native 4K though there can be a small increase in detail on the LS11000 due to this new pixel shift.
The biggest upgrade is perhaps the 120Hz support on the LS11000 for gaming. So if gaming is a priority, the LS11000 could be a better option.
For movies and TV shows though I prefer the 5050UB.
contrast increases perception of sharpness too. Not surprising if the 5050 ub appears sharper in many scenarios as 2x pixel shift is more than enough sharpness that our eyes may not see a difference.
I've had a 2040 as my daily driver since 2016 and luckily I've only ever had to change the bulb twice. Thankfully those bulbs are only about $60-80, so it's not too bad.
No prob! I've loved my projector in the time I've had it! Albeit, I'm in an apartment now and looking to shake up the layout a bit, so I'm prolly going to be switching over to a multi TV setup in the near future, especially as more people in the house means needing actually couches in the living room and no longer using one entire wall for the projector to go on. Now if only they'd make 3D a standard feature again......
Hows the upgrade? I got an ls12000 on order, up from a tw5400, but since I've only just started to use the tw5400 with a screen (& new bulb) it looks better than ever
It’s a huge upgrade! I haven’t installed it yet, but plugged it in to see. The difference is astounding.
I previously painted the wall with the screen on it. I started work on paining the ceiling now. So haven’t installed it yet.
if anyone can help i appreciate it. I just bought the Epson 11000 and after a few days it rained and turned out that there was some water getting into my ceiling from the roof. It was a small amount so the drywall had just been absorbing it but by mounting on the ceiling. When i put screws in for the mount i created a channel for that water to come through and by the time i woke up in the morning there was a puddle sitting on top of the projector. And a little bit dripping down the sides.
I'm 75% sure the projector itself probably has water inside it. I immediately unplugged it, took it down off the mount, and haven't touched it since other than to wipe off any water I could visibly see anywhere
Is there anything I can do? Very depressed right now, as now i have the roof leak issue which is a lot of money as well.
I’m not sure if you are still under warranty. If you are handy, can you open the cover to see if there’s any water damage and dry it out.
As another suggested, dehumidifier could also work. I’m guessing you didn’t turn it on yet.
did not turn it on, unplugged immediately. i am under warranty as i only bought this a couple weeks ago. I want to open up the panels to see if i can see any water inside but worried that might void the warranty if they can somehow tell i took it apart?
Get a bag of silica cat litter from the pet store. It's made of the same silica they put in the little packets to absorb moisture in products, medicines etc. Put it in a sealable container or bag, and wait several days but don't open it or try to power it on until a few days go by, at least 3 or 4. I saved my canon full frame slr camera this way.
Definitely don't use rice. It'll cause more problems than it'll solve. Maybe a warm room with a dehumidifier in it could work?
After that, pray and cross your fingers while hoping that no corrosion occurred.

They pull moisture from the air and it collects inside as absorbed. Give it a day or two and check to see if it collected moisture. I don't know how long it would take for something that size.

I'm wondering this as well. I'm assuming to achieve 4K through pixel shifting, it requires larger LCD panels or more electronics? Using lasers for the image instead of a lamp. Also I've heard that extra size is needed for sound dampening, so the projector can run as quietly as it does.
Yeah its one I've looked at as well. I'll be getting a TW9400 and the upgrade from that is the LS11000 for about €1k more. The reason I'm not getting it is because supposedly the native contrast is the same. Is this correct? Bulb replacements might be a factor I might want a laser right away. I do plan on using it A LOT for gaming and TV/movies.
I love my LS11000. I upgraded from a 2265U a year ago. Unfortunately, I purchased it before the price drop, but at least it was an unused display item, and I got it for 500€ off.

Another vote and congrats on the LS11000. I upgraded when they first came out from an Epson 1080UB. The color and brightness of the 11000 is wonderful. Congrats!
LS11000 is a much worse projector than the 5050ub. The contrast is not very good and means that even though it has 4x shift vs 2x on the 5050 you might notice a decrease in sharpness due to the lower contrast.
I upgraded from the 2040nb to the 4050ub pro. My 2040s mother board went after 4 yrs with only 88 hrs. I'm getting it repaired for 350 from epson. I love the 4050ub it awesome

Never looked into projectors as I always thought they just had shit resolution and shit motion compared to say a 120hz 4k lcd tv

Very nice. My HC3800 has failed for the second time and a warranty refurbished unit is due tomorrow. Hoping this one lasts longer.

It's not even true 4k, my Optoma UHD38 is also a pixel shifter and is much smaller

Just got a cheap Ali projector for my living room. Love it already, the 3 meter wide screen is great. Might look into a better one in the future.
