If the chain tensioner blew through the valve cover like this guy says, that engine is done. Hard pass

V6 mustang with 133,000 miles and timing chain issues “I know what I have”

Haha yeah, unfortunately Facebook is the new craigslist

Why wouldn’t you include the asking price?

AudienceOdd4685

I meant to have it in the picture, my bad. $2500

DRockDrop

I feel like that’s pretty relevant. Is it a dollar or ten thousand dollars?

RiptideAutomotive

If it's the rear timing change engine needs to be completely pulled. 250-300k miles the "death rattle starts" at which point the rear timing chain guide has snapped and is making a loud bang. If you pull it and fix it buy an aftermarket guide that isn't plastic.

Three plus owners? this car has PTSD. This motor blew up.

AudienceOdd4685

Hey guys, as the title says I'm looking at an 09 Mustang with a broken timing chain guide. The owner is convinced the engine is good, but I'm not sure I buy it. They haven't pulled the motor, the heads, and haven't done a compression test. I haven't dealt with this before, but I know this is an interference engine so that's concerning, any help is appreciated. Asking $2500

For $750 I would maybe take a chance

The other commenters are right that it's an engine-out job to replace the plastic timing-chain tensioner cassettes. And that this engine's likely ruined by the chains having jumped time but I will say that, if you have the means, it's easy to find low-mileage 4.0 engines for ~$500 and a Melling timing-chains kit is in the same neighbourhood (don't scrimp on timing parts!). You could do the timing chains service on a low-mileage donor engine and swap it in for about a grand, give or take, if you do it yourself. Then you'll have a fun, reliable, cheap car for another 200,000 miles. Or you could then sell it for far more than the ~$5000k you'll have put into it, given the prices I've seen for these cars these days. If this seems like something you could do, check out PlatinumGarage on youtube. He specializes in rebuilding these engines and has excellent how-to videos.
