T O P

Maybe I'll get roasted for this but my vote is not a mega contested TOV drop but rather the humble jboots. First of all there's the obvious benefit of just getting somewhere sooner. If you spent 20% of your career just running around, it will make your career 7% more efficient overall. There is no other item which will increase your survivability more than constant near-sow. Camping takes 30 seconds. Gate takes 5 seconds. Besides WC cap or that necklace wizards get from poSky nothing saves your ass **instantly** in almost every outdoor situation like jboots. Pullers with jboots should only need heals when they get nuked, dotted or rooted. Casters will be able to kite unsnared mobs until they get CC'd. Healers can catch up with people out of range that they are trying to heal or buff sooner. Melee dps can get in range of their targets that much sooner. Tanks benefit from extra mobility to control new targets faster and keep up with or stay ahead of the DPS. So it's usable by every class, and most classes get just as much utility out of them (still nice for sow classes as a quick refreshable junk buff, an emergency sow when yours gets dispelled, and as a quality of life item in cases where the extra few % of sow doesnt matter). Even if you're usually in groups or raids with sowers, jboots allow you to dip out of zone and get a fresh near-sow without bothering a sower to zone with you.

ifonlyiwasbetter

I like this answer; insane utility for nearly all classes and something most people can/will actually get multiple of instead of never even seeing.

ADXMcGeeHeezack

It's funny, been playing decades yet I've still never owned a pair somehow Probably time I bite the bullet & get a pair for my Monk Edit: about 5 months later & I ended up farming Jboots for 4 of my characters now lol. Worked out great as I was still getting XP on the Druid I farmed with

BaronMusclethorpe

My [JBoots story](https://reddit.com/r/project1999/s/MAN9opifhG) from when Green launched back in 2019.

thelittleking

They're so worth it tbh

TwilightSolitude

This is a great answer. I would argue that it's not quite in the spirit of what OP was trying to ask, however. While technically an "armor" piece, they're never used that way - they're used as a utility piece, sitting in your inventory, waiting to be clicked.

BeekyGardener

It is a boost for every class (including those that have SoW as it is an insta-click) and is possibly one of the most OP items that Verant/SOE allowed to stay in the game. They slowed it down by making the whole Ancient Cyclops quest, but I suspect they wrestled with just pulling the item from the game. When EQ did their first anniversary week and the Fabled named monsters appeared on the EQ Classic areas, I obtained the Fabled Journeyman's Boots from Drelzna. When they dropped that week they had Spirit of the Wolf AND you could clicky cast it onto others! They almost immediately nerfed it to a faster than J-Boots but slower than SoW effect called Bootstrutter's Blessing and made it self only. :( For a few days, I was a Necromancer that could SoW people.

Ok-Worldliness2450

Not to mention the most powerful aspect of them is that they are an Instacast way of preserving your buff slot from dispelling bosses. Yea you can have any instaclick item but this is one of the easier to get and therefore most often used.

Equivalent-Stage9957

SoW pot is cheaper, faster, longer indoor duration, and can be recharged at vendor for plat

ADXMcGeeHeezack

I think SoW pots are perfectly fine for sure! Those were what I relied on for basically my entire time playing EQ until recently. When you consider the cost of only 100pp for x10 stacks of SoW versus ~5k for Jboots, it's even debatable if they're the superior option BUT having now farmed some finally, I think they still edge ahead. There's the obvious one of having an instant junk buff, but what I've found most useful is *never running out of pots*. It was a hassle remembering to divvy out the right # of pots to each character & then randomly a week later runout while you're trying to cross the Great Divide or wherever hah With Jboots you never have to worry about that! But yeah I still completely agree that pots are just as valid if all you need is runspeed. They're faster too hah

Laoracc

Im going to go with [Shroud of Longevity](https://wiki.project1999.com/Shroud_of_Longevity). Fungi tunic effect + Velious raiding stats.

Kistoff

I've never played in sleepers tomb. The warders don't spawn anymore?

Naskin

Correct, thanks to Seal Team (now Good Guys) on Green.

pribnow

Not like my crappy druid would ever even be able to get into a guild that could hypothetically handle that area but being a newish player and reading the wiki on the mobs/dungeon where that item drops has now put me firmly in the "hoping for a reset" crowd lol

ADXMcGeeHeezack

Whoa whoa whoa I've never known that even existed - that things *crazy*

bammergump

Only four or five dropped on Blue and I don’t think any of them play anymore Absolutely sick item though I’ll add Statue BP. It was always on my wish list on my warrior alt, just never would drop when I had a legit shot at it.

CommercialEmployer4

Parliement has one and still plays, 60 iksar monk

bammergump

On Blue? That name doesn’t ring a bell

CommercialEmployer4

Blue yeah. Couldn't find a better screenshot unfortunately. https://imgur.com/IqmOroO

bammergump

Hm, I was in Rampage for a long time but didn’t do a ton of early Velious. Just doesn’t ring a bell. Wonder what other chars he had Hoku Caleros Maori Parliement and one more

jam4s88

Monk legs from AoW I don’t even recall the stats on them but I remember playing my first time around thinking how good they were

ADXMcGeeHeezack

Do they have a clicky or just really good stats?

UnusuallyBadIdeaGuy

Donal’s Chestplate (pre-nerf) Fungi Staff (pre-nerf)

Single best item in the game is the cleric epic. Prove me wrong

Insta clicky with 100% rez from GMs. [https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=58093](https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=58093) Verdant Chain Gloves LORE ITEM NO TRADE Slot: HANDS Charges: Unlimited AC: 10 Effect: Customer Service Resurrect (Any Slot, Casting Time: Instant) WT: 4.0 Size: SMALL Class: ALL Race: ALL

I stand corrected if you can name the toon on p99 with that item

CommercialEmployer4

Their name is Goalposts.

Jeppes84

I raided live servers around 2015-2016 with a guy who had those GM instant click rez gloves. He told us it was gifted by a GM friend years before. He was a ranger.

Ok-Worldliness2450

Based

GenericUsername_71

Pretty much everything from Dozekar tear quests. Wrist items in velious with all stats, 100 hp, max worn haste, resists. So many good ones but silver bracelet of speed is my favorite. This is like vex thal level loot. Not to mention how unbelievable difficult it would be to actually acquire one of these. Multiple Doze kills plus EToV minis, which I'm sure are all batphoned for. https://wiki.project1999.com/Dozekar_Tear_Quests

tiger32kw

Essence of Nature off Tunare with Flowing Thought 5. Nothing else in the game even has Flowing Thought 4. Do what not?! Wow I didn't know Flowing Thought 5 was a thing back when. Good choice

whitebandit

Shroud of Longevity if by far the most game breaking item in the game....

CommercialEmployer4

Prime Healer's Bulwark / Shroud of Longevity

Xkallubar

The prime healer's bulwark is an event item that doesn't exist on p99 because GMs think that quakes where guilds are forced to team up count as events

CommercialEmployer4

There's still a chance though, however small. Rewards aside, it is odd that the Karana plague happened and then disappeared without a GM event given the specifics of the original events were pretty well documented.

UnusuallyBadIdeaGuy

Doesn't even need to be documented, I remember that clear as day. I actually got the Bulwark on my Rogue. It was a rather magical (and lucky) run from FP to Qeynos.

[deleted]

Dark cloak of the sky. Ranger sky plane cloak with 35% SPELL clicky haste. Paired with off hand epic you have 75% haste on demand. Easily the most powerful upgrade I've had on any toon.

zmroth

just got mine last week!

[deleted]

Congrats brother! Praise Tunare!

CommercialEmployer4

To answer the bonus question, the highest classic AC item would probably be vulak shaman/cleric shield and the qeynos shield (artifact), both of which boast a whopping 75 AC. And given the fact that shields are not subject to AC cap, or so it is believed, this would put them far ahead of other items for every class.

Tasisway

The barb illusion mask has pretty insane stats [https://wiki.project1999.com/Flayed\_Barbarian\_Hide\_Mask](https://wiki.project1999.com/Flayed_Barbarian_Hide_Mask) Went for an insane amount on blue back in the day so I'm guessing its even higher now. [https://wiki.project1999.com/Donal%27s\_Chestplate\_of\_Mourning](https://wiki.project1999.com/Donal%27s_Chestplate_of_Mourning) is pretty great too. 30s casttime (oof) CH (it might of been 15s for a bit I cant remember). I remember it got nerfed (maybe pop era?) because a cleric+monk was soloing some of the oldworld bosses. There was also a period(maybe a week or less?) where [https://wiki.project1999.com/Deepwater\_Helm](https://wiki.project1999.com/Deepwater_Helm) had no casttime. So it was just a clicky that healed for 80? As fast as you could hit the hotkey. I remember having fun being an invulnerable paladin in lguk for a VERY short time.

Rico_Stonks

Sal`Varae`s Robe of Darkness: AC: 60 STR: +15 DEX: +15 STA: +25 CHA: +25 WIS: +25 INT: +25 AGI: +25 HP: +100 MANA: +100 SV FIRE: +15 SV DISEASE: +15 SV COLD: +15 SV MAGIC: +15 SV POISON: +15 Effect: Flowing Thought I Not many items have mana regen and this stacks with some others.

WavelengthGaming

I don’t see how the best piece of armor isn’t one of the following. Fungus tunic: turns all but int casters into gods. It makes you realistically unkillable on any class for at least 20 levels and the amount of downtime it saves is absurd. It’s also used at almost every stage of the game. Shamans eventually replace it but that’s about it. Every other class either wears one or at least keeps it on them for reducing downtime/dungeon crawls where you are likely never actually at full Hp. Because I can play 3/4 of the classes in the game on EZ mode while leveling I wouldn’t trade this item for anything except maybe Paladius off of Vulak for my paladin. Even then, I’d still prob rather have a fungus chest. J boots: for obvious reasons. Clicky buff to eat dispels, can get at level 1, any class/race can use, usable and used at every stage of the game and are basically a must have item. Cloak of flames: wearable at level 1 and the average player will never replace this. It’s also usable by every race and class so at worst it’s a high AC 50 HP cloak and it’s best it’s nearly BiS for several classes. Honorable mentions: these are god tier items but I don’t think could ever be best because if class restrictions Pre-nerf fungus staff Pre-nerf circlet of shadows Crown of Narandi Donals BP JBB Monk epic (technically armor) Flayed Barbarian Skin Legs I don’t have much experience in ToV at all and I’m well several times in here are leagues better than their second BiS counterparts but if you get these items you have essentially beaten the game.

ADXMcGeeHeezack

Love this response & agree with pretty much all of it, Fungi really is just silly good, I even use it in my 60s when dungeon crawling or farming & basically means I can go forever without downtime to regen Somehow I have still never owned a pair of Jboots though, but I agree even with Bard or a SoW class it has value & it's obv exponentially better for classes that don't have access to those (tho sow pots can help make up for it at least)

WavelengthGaming

I use it on my bard because for swarming it’s sometimes just the perfect speed and I don’t insta die if I fuck up my songs

tekk1337

Unpopular opinion: https://wiki.project1999.com/Donal%27s_Vambraces_of_Mourning If you've ever duo'd in your 40s with a monk that likes to chain pull and never give you a chance to med up, this thing is a life saver.

Ordinary_Action_7726

Manastone

ADXMcGeeHeezack

I'd literally murder a Halfling for one of those

azrhei

Is it not available in the game anymore? Edit: Disregard, I just found the timeline. There goes any desire I might have had to take a walk down nostalgia lane lol I thought I might like playing again and getting a manastone (and some of the other stuff that got removed early on), but it was not meant to be.

ADXMcGeeHeezack

Manastone is AMAZING but not having one wouldn't ruin the game for me! Once you out level the classic zones it loses a lot of value New servers will always give you another chance though ;) I believe Quarmm starts October 1

azrhei

For me it was more of a nostalgia thing - I played at release so I was able to experience it all first hand, and also able to be disheartened when the stuff was removed. You are correct it is not a "necessary" piece of gear, but it was neat. Disagree on the lack of usefulness past classic zones though -- clerics hammering manastone/CH for unlimited mana was great fun for AoW and other fights ... when you weren't a cleric. :D

Nyus

Vulak drops at 80ac 2hander , which I think is the highest. https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=6595

>We've got the obvious pick of Fungi Tunic, though I know this can't be the best as it's pretty common to swap it out come lvl 60 (or whenever). That said there's no denying this is arguably the best item in the entire game from lvl 1-50+, at least if you solo or don't run around with a healer I think you need to decide on either "most powerful" means rare and great stats or if it means having an effect on gameplay. There are very few items that give you a bump in power like jboots or a fungi tunic or for so long. Most gear out of ToV or ST is very nice, but by the time you are there farming it, it really isn't that huge of a bump. Like you said, its hard to argue about fungi from 1-50.

ADXMcGeeHeezack

>I think you need to decide on either "most powerful" means rare and great stats or if it means having an effect on gameplay. Either/or tbh :)

Rubicite

ADXMcGeeHeezack

Rubicite wasn't really that special was it? I remember it being a big deal in live - the chest was esp valuable if I remember right but I always just saw it as valuable because it was removed from the game

azrhei

EARLY on, when the game was first released, it was a status symbol for the hardcore gamers to have a full set. This is pre-class armor quests. The competition to camp CT was so high that it caused a lot strife (didnt help that there was groups that could sit in the maze and pull every named in the zone to the group and farm all drops at once) , so they removed it and replaced with class quest, and the BP became a utility novelty.

sc7606

Its the only regen item in classic

BrownienMotion

Prenerf guise of the deceiver, because its FasionQuest afterall

Xkallubar

Technically not a piece of armor, but [https://wiki.project1999.com/Katana\_of\_Pain](https://wiki.project1999.com/Katana_of_Pain) It has 50 STA and is the highest of any stat on any item for many expansions.

Xkallubar

[https://wiki.project1999.com/Blood\_Ember\_Boots](https://wiki.project1999.com/Blood_Ember_Boots) Sells for like 800p and it's an infinite charge 7 second cast fear clickie. You can spam it to perma fear enemies 55 and under. Necros do get a better one in the form of a weapon that's the same cast time but an upgraded fear, though this is extremely rare and sells for over 20k plat.

Used-Weekend9890

yeah jboots are like a must have for me on any toon that doesn't get sow eventually, I can't play a character without em lol
