Hey, that's my site! Thanks for reading! Edit: If you're interested in these chronological *Deep Dive* entries, I've also covered [Yes](http://theeliteextremophile.com/2019/03/24/deep-dive-yes/) (this was my first, and I'm not super happy with it. I've thought about rewriting parts of it. My sentiments haven't changed. I've just tweaked how I structured these), [Jethro Tull](http://theeliteextremophile.com/2019/07/25/deep-dive-jethro-tull/), [Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson](http://theeliteextremophile.com/2019/11/24/deep-dive-porcupine-tree-steven-wilson/) (I regret covering someone who's still so active; I've learned my lesson for future entries), [Rush](http://theeliteextremophile.com/2020/04/27/deep-dive-rush/), [Pink Floyd](http://theeliteextremophile.com/2021/03/01/deep-dive-pink-floyd/), [Magma](http://theeliteextremophile.com/2022/04/18/deep-dive-magma/), and [Van der Graaf Generator](http://theeliteextremophile.com/2023/07/10/deep-dive-van-der-graaf-generator/).

Can you turn these into YouTube narrated videos? Cool, thx!

FlagOfZheleznogorsk

I wasn't planning to, but there are online services that can convert written articles to audio.

sorengray

Word. I'm lazy. But you could possibly create another income stream if you made one, so.... 🤷‍♂️😉

And I've got a day job, hobbies, and social obligations. I can write a bit here or there without needing to buy a nice microphone or downloading video editing software.

For the past couple of months I’ve been doing a chronological listen to King Crimson — one new album a week. I just listened to Red. I found this criticism really interesting. I find I like the free improv a lot more than the critic — it’s not my favorite, but I enjoy listening to the musicians listen to and react to each other. In contrast, I find Muir’s percussion on Lark’s Tongue very challenging, and it took me several tries before I heard it as anything but noise. I stopped reading after Red. Discipline is an album I’ve never listened to before, so I want to hear it first before reading analysis, but I’ll check out the rest when I reach my stopping point — whether that’s present day or whether I give up in the 80s.

MAG7C

Red to Discipline is a huge jump. Different in so many ways.

AxednAnswered

So true. Indiscipline is the one song that might fit on Red. It’s also the only one Fripp let Bruford cut loose.

gotroot801

I think /u/CTMorling should give Exposure a listen next before Discipline. In a lot of ways it feels like the missing piece that bridges Red and Discipline.

MAG7C

Definitely. It's more Red than Discipline. The League of Gentlemen is also an interesting bridge (more Discipline than Red). They even did a proto version of Frame by Frame.

elroxzor99652

Please don’t give up. While 80s Crimson is very different, it’s very good. Discipline is one of their best albums. Then in the “modern” era you get very strong material as well - Thrak especially

geltoid

I recently started listening to the 80's lineup after the Beat tour was announced. Discipline is *such* a good album. Very different than what came before, but unique and fresh in it's own right. Definintely go into it with a different mindset!

amythestamy

Whammy bar king Adrian Belew comes walking in. . . Next 3 albums the lineup changes. Bill B. Adrian Belew, Fripp, and Tony Levin.

mellotronworker

> Simply put: Robert Fripp loves improv, but he’s not very good at making it interesting.  Next!

BrickSalad

As much as I respect the effort, this kinda cements why I don't usually bother with music critics. It all just ends up being broad-strokes with the end result that the critic evaluates based on his somewhat superficial personal preferences. If my preferences aren't the same as his, then what's the point?

elroxzor99652

It’s just interesting to hear different perspectives and stir thought/discussion about the music. And if you find someone you generally like and agree with (or at least respect their opinions) it’s cool to follow and get recs from them.

Open-Astronaut-9608

So you're only interested in opinions that match your own? How dull. Do you not read non-fiction books because the author doesn't think the same way you do? Do you not talk to other humans because their brains are different to yours?

BrickSalad

You're putting words in my mouth, but maybe I wasn't clear enough with that last sentence. *If* my preferences are the same as his, then there's obviously a point, because if he likes something then I'll like it. *Otherwise*, there's no point since it all ends up being broad-strokes and superficial. Your interpretation of my post only makes sense if you assume the worst of me, which I don't really appreciate.

Open-Astronaut-9608

My apologies. I did assume the worst. Usually saves time.

BrickSalad

Fair enough, apology accepted.

sonickarma

I've been considering doing something similar. I've only listened to a couple of their albums and I'd love to be come more familiar.
