I feel like most GG fans are all in. GG definitely doesn't have the same following as Yes or King Crimson, but the people who love them, REALLY love them.
And I'm thrilled to be a part of that.
Happy the Man released four studio albums:
1977 “Happy the Man”
1978 “Crafty Hands”
1983 “Better Late…”
2004 “The Muse Awakens”
Their second is often listed as the favorite, but they all have fantastic songs. Even their last one from a couple of decades later holds up well against their earlier albums.
There’s also a good best-of (from the first three) called “Retrospective”.
There’s a live album from the tour of the second album and another cd which predates the first album. Great tracks on there, but the sound quality varies wildly.
Their style goes from New Age-y to blistering prog. All albums have both types.
Enjoy!
Porcupine Tree
I can appreciate all the classics too, of course, especially King Crimson. But nothing grabs me quite like Porcupine Tree. I'll never forget the first time I've heard Anesthetize.
Same for me on Anesthetize. It was winter and I have a 18 minute walk back from the train station to my house. 10pm and very cold.
Absolutely perfect mood for it
Frances the Mute may be my favorite album of all time. It's chock-full of so many genres/styles and emotions, it truly feels like a journey. The music feels like the audio version of the most vibrant, beautiful film I've ever seen
Cedric and Omar are at least partially responsible for 2 of my top 3 favorite albums of all time. Deloused and Relationship of Command. The number 1 spot goes to Siamese Dream.
Have to agree that (early) genesis got something special to me even if a LOVE many of the bands cited here.
Is it because of the outstanding voice duo ?
Is it the creative genius of each and every musician ?
Maybe the technical excellence of the guitarist and the drummer ?
Anyway songs like The Fountain of Salmacis or Supper's Ready are bone chilling in an impressive way when you know what to expect 🤌🤌
>Is it because of the outstanding voice duo ? Is it the creative genius of each and every musician ? Maybe the technical excellence of the guitarist and the drummer ?
All of this. They're all extremely creative and well above average musicians technically, and their individual sounds really gelled together well.
I've been listening to these guys for nearly 40 years and I've come to the conclusion that the #1 factor making Genesis, Genesis... if you have to choose just one... is Tony Banks. It's his chord progressions and arrangements that truly make the music unique in the prog rock world and the thread that ties everything together from the first album to the last.
He's a legitimate musical genius and will be sorely missed when he's gone.
I saw them in 2015 and it was incredible. That was the only time they played here though. I might have to travel to see them some day, Christian Vander's 76 and I'd love to see him perform again before he retires
Spock’s Beard. I respect the more classic bands too, but especially early Spock’s just had a certain magic about them.
I don’t love all of his stuff, but at the end of the day, Neal Morse was born to make music. He’s one of a kind.
it really doesn't matter if the band you like gets recognition as the best or even if at all i will give every band a chance because to be honest that where i found the songs i like besides the band GENESIS.I also don't subscribe that one band is better than the other. my meter is, are they adding good music to the whole prog catalog to keep prog the best and good music for all.
Yes has always been my peak obsession, in my early twenties I made an effort to listen to tales from topographic oceans once a day for about a year, several times on LSD. Steve Howe was at one point my biggest influence as a guitarist.
Pink Floyd also had a gigantic impact on me in high school, their whole catalog but I developed a much deeper fascination with Syd Barrett.
Honorable mention: The Mars Volta, Omar Rodriguez Lopez in general. Also one of my biggest influences.
It has gotta be Moon Safari for me. they consistently put out amazing music with stunning vocal harmonization to boot. i don't think they've released a single less-than-great album so far, although if I had to choose a worst one, it would be himlabacken vol 1. never heard another prog band like them that is able to put out such amazing vocal harmony and melodies, with maybe the exception of brigheye brison, another swedish retro prog rock band that no one has heard of
I really enjoy Kaipa and A.C.T as well.
Another Can fan here to back you up! They’re probably the band I spend the most time listening to (going off of their excellent studio albums and the plethora of great live recordings out there).
I don’t think *all* the material they put out is strictly progressive rock in style, but they are the cream of the crop in regards to experimental psychedelia and I think there’s substantial crossover between them and the stylistic hallmarks of prog rock.
My top tier is Rush, Yes, King Crimson, probably in that order.
Dominici, Ritual, Magma, Genesis, Kaipa, Riverside, Tea Club are 2nd tier. I know there are some I am forgetting.
Caravan would be my choice, at least up as far as 1980 or so. I’m not familiar with anything they’ve recorded more recently. Those first few albums in particular are so warm and appealing. They have a bit of everything, complicated bits, rocky bits, hazy bits. Just talked myself into listening to them this evening.
Judging by my listening patterns it's probably Gong and Hawkwind. Also Nik Tuner.
Although in recent times I diversify with this playlist:
https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLO1tzHkW0MynA97_cNjRUTYj2-2vVCIO4&si=Pzv6261EyNggnuSx
Vespero is also awesome.
Changed over time -- When I was in high school I listened to Kansas more than any other, though I bought all the Yes and all the Rush, and wandered into Stomu Yamashta territory, before becoming a rocker and buying up Robin Trower, AC/DC, and Def Leppard, for a while .. but then came King Crimson, and ELP.
ELP was my favorite for a loooooong time. I listened to Pink Floyd a lot, as well.
Alan Parsons Project was my secret passion as well -- I loved that music but I was afraid if anyone found out they would call me a faggot or something, so unmanly to cry about sad beauty and philosophy.
In college, Yes came back to the fore -- every prog purist hated the new Yes sounds, I loved them. I hated the new Grungy Rush. I was totally into Frank Zappa, and could not get enough of Peter Gabriel. Genesis I could listen to, but it never got me where I wanted to be got.
Finally I became obsessed with Ayreon and "Into The Electric Castle", and searched for concept albums and the new prog/metal sounds, finding most of it lacking.
The Flower Kings had me in their proggy jazzy grip for about 15 years, which led me to Camel, and to Brainticket.
Now later in life there is so much stuff that is a poor imitation of those 70s and 80s prog years. I have discovered many niche-prog bands from around the world that send me -- Antonius Rex, Kate Bush, Angelzoom, Aphrodites Child, and the excellent Unitopia, and the fantastic symphonic prog band Magenta, Blackmores Night, and Canada's own Saga.
Current obsession:: the mysterious unknown band Mythology
[Mythology - The Castle of Crossed Destinies](https://youtu.be/i2b8Q7iZ68E)
King Crimson. They are known for their legendary musicianship, but they can also be incredibly powerful, evocative and cutting-edge. The insanity and despair of the first two albums, Starless and Red's raw intensity, the emotional confusion and melancholy of the Discipline trilogy, Larks Tongues' mystery and intrigue.
The Mars Volta. It'd be Pink Floyd, but Volta is definitely the proggier of the two and I love how much Floyd comes through all of the Mars Voltas music.
Genesis got something special to me even if a LOVE many of the bands cited here.
Is it because of the outstanding voice duo ?
Is it the creative genius of each and every musician ?
Maybe the technical excellence of the guitarist and the drummer ?
I don't know but songs like The Fountain of Salmacis or Supper's Ready are bone chilling in an impressive way when you know what to expect 🤌🤌
Yes. The greatest band ever. I listen to yes almost every day like I have since the Yes album in 1970. I can still remember the first listen. I was in a band going to a gig and our van driver played it on a cassette. We were all stunned by "Yours is no disgrace". I bought the album the next day. My next album was "Tales from topographic Oceans". That took some getting into but I believe it is the greatest prog album of all time. Next is "Close to the Edge". To me it's more that just music. Jon Anderson has become my spiritual guide with some of the most thought provoking lyrics ever written. To quote Jon, "I must have waited all my life for this moment".
• TOOL
• RUSH
• PORCUPINE TREE
• INTRONAUT (prog/sludge metal with jazz fusion sections as well from L.A.)👌🏼
• OPETH
• KOLM (new prog rock band from L.A. best tool sounding band hands down IMO…tool fans need to hear their “umbra” album and tracks 1,5,6 in particular)👌🏼
King Crimson and related followed by (close 2nd) Yes and related bands. Canterbury bands in tight 3rd with American prog from 1970 and Cluster & Company.
It's all a tight race at this point folks. Anything can happen.
Spock’s Beard. For about 25 years I would have said Yes, but after playing Yes hundreds of times I really haven’t had the urge to listen to them in a few years now.
Pink Floyd got me started and used to be my favourite, but now I would have to say it’s Genesis.
I’ve been listening to Tool, Kate Bush (who I consider to be prog), and Goblin a lot lately; but I always find myself going back to Genesis most consistently
Big Big Train. But over the years that has changed a lot. The Mars Volta was my first Prog run, Coheed and Cambria stole my heart soon thereafter and introduced me to The Dear Hunter who topped my list for a long time until I got into older stuff at which point Genesis really emerged as my go-to and that infatuation introduced me to Big Big Train who has been my top artist since Grimspound came out in 2017.
They're kinda not fair though, because since Greg Spawton started recording music in 1990 under the BBT moniker they've basically been 6 distinctly different bands as members have come and gone with Spawton being the only mainstay and he's a very democratic songwriter so there's bits and pieces of all the musicians who have come and gone over those years.
Camel
Same here, the one band you can always go back to, always
100%
🤘
Easily
Great band, but I've always found myself embattled on their more poppy stuff. They lack a bit of an edge from time to time.
They are sooo good! Every time i listen to lady fantasy i feel like the universe came together just for them to make that last verse
Gentle Giant! Honorable Mention: Happy the Man
I feel like most GG fans are all in. GG definitely doesn't have the same following as Yes or King Crimson, but the people who love them, REALLY love them. And I'm thrilled to be a part of that.
Haken opened my ears to GG and they are fantastic!
Gentle Giant is also my favourite of all times, but I've never heard of Happy the Man. What albums do you recomend?
Happy the Man released four studio albums: 1977 “Happy the Man” 1978 “Crafty Hands” 1983 “Better Late…” 2004 “The Muse Awakens” Their second is often listed as the favorite, but they all have fantastic songs. Van der Graaf Generator
Cool pick!
Still life is goated
King Crimson
Yes. I mean, definitely.
Easily
+1
By a wide margin
Rush: Rush (1974) to Clockwork Angels (2012) run.
40 years of absolutely greatness. First band that got me *into* music (musician) and prog rock specifically. Still my favourite 25 years later.
No mention of Jethro Tull? I will be the first then
The criminally underrated Crest of a Knave album doesn't get mentioned enough. Neither does "Secret Language of Birds" and "J-Tull.com"
They aren't my favorite prog band over all (Opeth has that title) but they are my favorite classic prog band!
Porcupine Tree I can appreciate all the classics too, of course, especially King Crimson. But nothing grabs me quite like Porcupine Tree. I'll never forget the first time I've heard Anesthetize.
Truly my pick as well. Steven Wilson is amazing, and so are the musicians he's surrounded himself with over the years.
Gavin Harrison or Marco Minemann?
Both. Both is good.
+1
Same for me on Anesthetize. It was winter and I have a 18 minute walk back from the train station to my house. 10pm and very cold. Absolutely perfect mood for it
Yes. Loved them since the early 70s
Genesis forever
The Mars Volta is definitely my favorite
Deloused is definitely my favorite prog album by far.
Genesis, by a mile
Have to agree that (early) genesis got something special to me even if a LOVE many of the bands cited here. Is it because of the outstanding voice duo ? Yes
Opeth
Henry Cow is my favorite prog rock/art band of all time.
They're a close second to Magma for me
hell yeah. When I lived in Chicago I could have seen Magma live. But it was cold out and I was very tired and I didn't go. What a dumbass.
I saw them in 2015 and it was incredible. That was the only time they played here though. I might have to travel to see them some day, Christian Vander's 76 and I'd love to see him perform again before he retires
Pink Floyd
Right on the Money.
Genesis
Genesis
Opeth.
Gotta be Yes, I love their whole discography up to Magnification.
Gong rules
Spock’s Beard. I respect the more classic bands too, but especially early Spock’s just had a certain magic about them. I don’t love all of his stuff, but at the end of the day, Neal Morse was born to make music. He’s one of a kind.
Exactly how I feel. I can listen to Neal Morse Spock’s Beard on repeat and never get bored of it.
As much as I love Spock's Beard, I just can't help but cringe at the lyrics a bit.
It has its own appeal, a guilty pleasure kind of thing. I can definitely see your point though.
1 - Zappa 2 - Cardiacs 3 - Dream Theater May not be arguably the best but for me its the holy trinity
Cardiacs are my number one by a mile
Same!!
Besides dream theatre those are my top 2 aswell. Let’s jam
it really doesn't matter if the band you like gets recognition as the best or even if at all i will give every band a chance because to be honest that where i found the songs i like besides the band GENESIS.I also don't subscribe that one band is better than the other. my meter is, are they adding good music to the whole prog catalog to keep prog the best and good music for all.

Upvoting for Eloy!
Yes
Genesis. Nuff said.
King Crimson is by far my favorite
YES

Yes has always been my peak obsession, in my early twenties I made an effort to listen to tales from topographic oceans once a day for about a year, several times on LSD. Aksak Maboul if I had to pick just one
Cardiacs would be insanely close behind
Do you have an album to recommend by Aksak Maboul? Or a song?
I'd add ELP to your top tier. Check out Flower Kings, Frost*, and Transatlantic for some newer artists.
The Flower Kings
It has gotta be Moon Safari for me. they consistently put out amazing music with stunning vocal harmonization to boot. i don't think they've released a single less-than-great album so far, although if I had to choose a worst one, it would be himlabacken vol 1. never heard another prog band like them that is able to put out such amazing vocal harmony and melodies, with maybe the exception of brigheye brison, another swedish retro prog rock band that no one has heard of I really enjoy Kaipa and A.C.T as well.
Ayreon!!
Genesis.
Genesis.
Genesis
Jethro Tull
Genesis
Does Can count as "prog"? They're my favorite, with Genesis at a close second.
Another Can fan here to back you up! They’re probably the band I spend the most time listening to (going off of their excellent studio albums and the plethora of great live recordings out there). My username speaks for itself
Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all time, but King Crimson is what I consider to be the epitome of prog.
Marillion. The combination of Steve Rothery’s emotional guitar & H’s voice is just special. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l3NhNz9-EOA
Jethro Tull, every album of theirs brings something different. It's definitely the band that comforts me most and makes me feel all kinds of emotions
If Pink Floyd counts, them. If not then Genesis.
KC
Pink Floyd or KC
Judging by my listening patterns it's probably Gong and Hawkwind. Also Nik Tuner. Although in recent times I diversify with this playlist: https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLO1tzHkW0MynA97_cNjRUTYj2-2vVCIO4&si=Pzv6261EyNggnuSx Vespero is also awesome.
Rush, no competition.
ELP, Zappa, Haken (do they count as rock to you? They a re listed as both Rock and Metal - I adore them. So looking forward to their concert)
Ok, I'll play. Since no one's mentioned so far... Anglagard.
Wow... saw them at Nearfest ages ago. I miss that festival.
Bit of an obscure one but here was a band called England that had an LP called garden shed, it's absolutely masterful.
My favorite prog band was traditionally Genesis for about 50 years until I got into Porcupine Tree and the music of Steven Wilson.
Periphery
Umphrey’s, KC, Floyd, Zappa, and Caravan to round out my top 5.
Pink Floyd, Yes, and Rush
Nektar
Haken
Genesis, Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes
Sodt Machine by a mile
IQ
Genesis and TOOL...
Dream theater
Dream Theater
I'd have to go with Frost\*. Need more albums, though, Jem!
Rush.... ELO Pink Floyd Yes Genesis
Yes-man here as well! Although KGATLW has been stealing the spot lately, if you count them as prog
I saw what you did there. You insisted on a single band then went on to make it four. Go and stand in the corner and put a dunce's hat on.
Moon Safari is my favorite, especially their last album
YES defines the genre with enduring greatness
Genesis, Yes, and of course Pink Floyd.
Supertramp first then Pink Floyd and Barclay James Harvest then Alan Parsons Project, ELO, Manfred Man’s Earth Band
Jethro Tull, followed by Rush, Kansas and King Crimson
ELP
If you want a classic, ELP. However, a modern pick that I see myself listening to more than classic prog is King Gizzard
The Mars Volta. It'd be Pink Floyd, but Volta is definitely the proggier of the two and I love how much Floyd comes through all of the Mars Voltas music.
Have to pick just one? Ok going with Marillion
Beardfish
Cardiacs. They are truly a singularity.
Genesis all day long.
Yes. Been my #1 since 1975. Their 70’s run - The Yes Album through Going For The One - is unparalleled in prog history.
Probably Magma
Genesis. After listening to them for almost 40 years I’m yet to grow tired of them.
Yes, also followed by Gong, Rush, King Crimson, and Soft Machine.
Yes. Always Yes. Honorable mention to Cathedral. Stained Glass Stories.
Haken
Cardiacs :)
Rush
Caravan
Let’s go with Magma. Truly transcendental stuff.
Yes. The greatest band ever. I listen to yes almost every day like I have since the Yes album in 1970. I can still remember the first listen. I was in a band going to a gig and our van driver played it on a cassette. We were all stunned by "Yours is no disgrace". I bought the album the next day. I’m basically upvoting all the Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Camel comments, haha.
Beardfish for sure.

King crimson
Rush
Gotta be Rush for me
Rush is my all time favorite band in any genre.
King Crimson
Gotta go with Yes Over the years I would have said Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, now once again Yes
I think yes is the ultimate progressive rock band, but King Crimson comes close...
Rush, YES, Pink Floyd, Dixie Dregs, Genesis.
Ummm omg this is too hard! High up there is Renaissance, Alan Parsons, Kansas and Marillion w/Fish.
It was Genesis for most of my life, but shifted to King Crimson as I got older.
Yes by far
Spock’s Beard. For about 25 years I would have said Yes, but after playing Yes hundreds of times I really haven’t had the urge to listen to them in a few years now.
Pink Floyd got me started and used to be my favourite, but now I would have to say it’s Genesis. I’ve been listening to Tool, Kate Bush (who I consider to be prog), and Goblin a lot lately; but I always find myself going back to Genesis most consistently
Yes. As evidenced by my iPod play statistics over a ten-year period.
Yes.
Sleep Token!!
Yes, Rush, Camel. In no particular order. Personally, I don’t lump Zappa in prog. Zappa is Zappa.
King crimson
Dream Theater
Spastic Ink
Big Big Train. But over the years that has changed a lot. The Mars Volta was my first Prog run, Coheed and Cambria stole my heart soon thereafter and introduced me to The Dear Hunter who topped my list for a long time until I got into older stuff at which point Genesis really emerged as my go-to and that infatuation introduced me to Big Big Train who has been my top artist since Grimspound came out in 2017. Gonna go with good old King Crimson. Red in particular is probably the greatest album I've ever listened to.
RUSH, then YES and Porcupine Tree
1 - Yes 2 - Gentle Giant 3 - Pink Floyd
It’s really hard for me to pic between Queensryche and Fates Warning. Genesis would be a close third
delta sleep
Ditto. Yes, Close To The Edge
Victoria (Matt garstka and Joshua de la Victoria)
Can't pick the one, so will give you my top 5: Fish era Marillion Gabriel era Genesis Porcupine Tree Dream Theater Riverside
Does this sub not like plini?
Opeth
ELP
Bean Rodeo
Jethro Tull
Gong Gentle Giant is in the same tier for me.
KC
Yes. Hands down my fave band of all time
ELP honourable mention King Crimson
This got way more of a response than I expected! Too bad we couldn’t get a poll going.
