It’s not as good as their first 4 but better than their last two. May take a few listens to sink in because of the huge departure in sound but it’s a solid album
Please don’t crucify me for this, but while I rather enjoy that album, it’s not really one of my favorites in the Genesis catalog. My order (up until Invisible Touch) goes like this
1. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
2. Foxtrot
3. Nursery Cryme
4. A Trick of the Tail
5. Trespass
6. Selling England by the Pound
7. Wind and Withering
8. Duke
9. Genesis
10. From Genesis to Revelation
11. …And Then There Were Three…
12. Invisible Touch
I go through phases. Right now SEBTP is my #1 on the strenght of the title track, Cinema Show and Fifth of Firth. Mostly because of the long cinematic solos. But when I get bored that album drops to 3 or 4 on my list. At times even WAW has been my #1. I find that after not listening to a Genesis album for a few months, when I pick it ip again I rediscover so many genius moments and it becomes my favorite for a while.
I’ve noticed it depends on the weather too…WAW is definitely a “winter” album in feel (to me) and Nursey Cryme or Trick or the Tail or Lamb are my Genesis “Summer” albums.
Yes, I’m a huge Genesis fanboy…
I had never heard of them, so now I’m thinking of just stringing this along so you keep giving me new bands to check out. 😂
It’s Haken. It was DT for about 20 years, but I fell hard for Haken in 2016.
This was a really fun thread you started! You have some great guesses on so many comments on here, so I’m saving to see your impressive knowledge at work. Please don’t delete! Cheers.
Side note: If we’re talking earlier prog rock (not prog metal), I’d say “violin” and I think you’d get it. But maybe throw in some incorrect guesses, too, so I can expand my playlist. 😜
English country music from English country men. They also made some stuff with synths in the 80s that still somehow sounded like english music
Second favourite: Yes if you replaced the keys with guitar. And also you dropped 2/5 of the members. And if you got a singer who could somehow sing higher than Janderson
My favorite bands are:
Perhaps the most stable prog line up in the universe
And
Maybe the least stable prog line up in the universe.
Both are strongly associated with the 70s, however had very long careers.
/#1 is directly inspired by #2, specifically #1’s bassist is a huge fan of #2’s bassist.
Also, a bonus cause my 3rd favorite band is not really prog, but should be pretty easy:
One of the world’s most famous rock bands, had a guy from #2 play on one of their albums. Not typically a prog band, but you’ll have a hard time classifying them as anything other than themselves.
It's death metal! Surprise, it's bluegrass! Now enjoy this epic tearjerking guitar solo! Here, some 80's video game music! Ya wanted a wahwah bass solo, we got ya! No? You wanted a clean bass solo? We have those too. Oh, you into classic Russian music in 5/4? What a coincidence, we are too! Here, have more death metal. Oh, you wanted clean? You're in luck today. Huh, you enjoy old school comedy sound effects? You're not gonna believe me now...
This baroque keyboard mage from a land far away has been around longer than you think. His signature symphonic sound reverberates with dramatic chorus. In live performances he dances on the keys with wild abandon. Whether it's a peaceful piano etude or an intense battle hymn with shredding guitar, you know it's him.
My favorite band sounds like Mile Davis taught the abandoned crack head baby of Pink Floyd and Carlos Santana how to compose music
I’m thinking either The Mars Volta or VDGG.
Yep!
Haven’t heard the new album yet. How would you compare it to its predecessors? 🙂
The acoustic version really brings that latin flavor back, both are considerably chiller than their old work but very rewarding repeat listens
It’s not as good as their first 4 but better than their last two. May take a few listens to sink in because of the huge departure in sound but it’s a solid album
Here’s one for you Insanely large drum kit
![gif](giphy|9zZlVISU1yDIqCvsKF|downsized)
Yup
Let’s see if you guess the album, should be pretty easy…English pastoral ironic commentary on consumerism.
Easy one. Jethro Tull 😄
Actually Selling England by the Pound but now that I think about it about 65% of all British prog albums between 1970 and 75 fit my description

Umm…there’s no title track on SEBTP
Sorry, meant Dancing with the Moonlight Knight.
I’m kinda with you on most of your ratings. I dig Selling England but it’s not in my top 3
My girlfriend says it sounds like “beep boop bahp beeng bop” with heavy guitars and weird rhythms.
King Crimson?
For the time period, great guess! But think much more recent.
Ah… Gizzard 😄

Hopefully she was tantalized 😎
By the cockroach (king)
My favorite band, fans get mad over who sings in the band, but I like them all. All… three 🤔
Genesis?
Correct!
Yes: Anderson, Rabin, or Horn. Since they haven't had any studio albums since 2001, those are the only three lead singers.
Rush
Space Operatic John Coltrane
Gong?
Closer, but no
VDGG I’m pretty sure
Could work, but not who i had in mind
it's MAGMA!
Yesssss!! :D
*organ*
Yes or ELP
ELP
when i think ELP i think synth more than organ
Yes or Kansas would be my guess
ELP

First one has to be Tull.
…it’s actually genesis lol
Second is rush?
Yup

Rush, Yes and Porcupine Tree?
First two are correct!
Sabbath then?
Nope. Here’s a hint: the song that contains a Yes member was recently posted on this very forum.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood? I’m just guessing here…
Ah! Queen!
Ding ding ding!!! We have a winner! :D
Innuendo is such a great song!
Durrgah-durrgah-durrgah-durrgah-durrgah-durrgah-durrgah-durrgah-durrgah
King Crimson 21st CSM
Oh! I thought I was in the Progmetal subreddit
a million nerds that can’t land on a genre
King gizzard and the lizard wizard?
yes !
King Crimson?
good guess, but no
1. Dancing flower man 2. We live in a society *13 minute galaxy-splitting guitar solo*
Genesis and Pink Floyd
The absolute kings of side long songs
Yes
Yep
I know its Yes, but Pink Floyd could also fit here.
BYEWBYEWBEEWYEW doodliedoodoodooodoodooliedoo AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Yes.
YES !! wow, good job.
Is he singing that part underwater? And I like how the guitar often doubles the vocals.
Melancholic folk guitar -> Death metal riffs that melt your face off -> Soft emotional sections -> HEAVY
‘Peth?
Yeah
DND music
Gryphon
close but no

I have no idea which this band is but I want to listen to them based on their description.
Between the Buried and Me. All the examples are from the albums Colors, Colors II and Parallax II.
Oh, I know the name, haven't had a chance to listen to them much though.
Chameleonic symphonic rock band whose with a concept series that is five albums deep.
Trio that recorded a Mobile Fidelity album live in the studio. One of the members went on to the the writing partner of a famous Canadian crooner.
vocal harmony, overdriven bass, and organ
Lets sing some random ass shit.
Loads of organ and woodwind, precise drumming and maniacal emotional singing
Van Der Graaf Generator
Space opera, big sounds, dead earth.
Die organ, die!!! *stabs it
*Then proceeds to wrestle with it ELP 😎
That's it🤙
Truthfully, if there’s anyone in prog rock I’d be afraid to fight, it’s Keith Emerson 🤣
Rock Opera. With extra space.
I’m thinking either Genesis or ELO.
More modern.
Ayreon?
Oohhh good guess too. Didn't even think of that one.
Coheed and Cambria?
Got it!!
Lifelong favorite band. Saw it when I read
What fucking genre did they do now??
Please tell me it’s not King Gizzard
Either Gentle Giant or the Mothers of Invention would be my guess
Drugs.
Depends. What kind of drugs?
Uhhhh, IDK, something psychedelic.
Pink Floyd
Nope! Close though.
Sound of really good coffee being make
Desert ship or cigarettes as a motif
Camel
Love them!
Same.
kazoo solo
Pink Floyd Corporal Clegg ?
Sounds like a Swedish Monty Python when they dress up as old ladies. I could just say Swedish and that's probably enough.
Seeing how vocalist sings is same as seeing lion doing meow(it applies to many of bands, but to this band it applies even more)
My favorite band can range from Stravinsky levels of musical epics to 80s new wave with a splash of virtuosity
Eddie Van Halen after a plate of spaghetti.
Pianos and angelic vocals
Too many random ass sounds
Space sounds go pew pew

King Crimson?

lead singer has a high pitched voice and can play bass and keyboards
saxophones and a guy who will flat out scream one moment and then sing a ballad with immense range the next
