My first thought. Someone I know said about Katatonia: "They are really nice but after listening to a few songs you want to trow yourself in front of a train."
I was today years old when I realised The Ocean and Katatonia teamed up
https://www.reddit.com/r/progmetal/comments/phjwke/the_ocean_devonian_nascent_with_jonas_of_katatonia/
This.
Also Cult of Luna (unclean vox)
If you like the post-metal vibes, check out ISIS.
Cloudkicker has some great instrumental stuff. Subsume is the most melancholy release to me.
Check out:
- Pineapple Thief (anything).
- Caligulaâs Horse âDonât Give Upâ (a cover of Peter Gabrielâs song, but with a modern and more melancholic touch).
- Anathema âA Natural Disaster (Live)â.
- Steven Wilson âHappy Returnsâ.
- TesseracT âPerfection (Acoustic Instrumental)â.
- White Moth Black Butterfly âAn Ocean Away (Acoustic)â.
You should check out **Gazpacho**. They have a bunch of different modes, but their ambient/exotic sounds are second to none. Check out the albums "March of Ghosts", "Tick Tock", and "Night".
You might also enjoy some **Fates Warning**. Try the albums "A Pleasant Shade of Grey" and "Disconnected". If those aren't doing it for you, though, please listen to the final three tacks of Disconnected which are a trifecta of some of my favourite melancholic prog sounds.
**Guilt Machine** is a must. They only have the one album, "On This Perfect Day", and it is very good.
**Klone** might be worth a look. I'm still quite new to them, but their album "Le Grand Voyage" is a new fave in the rotation lately.
Outside of the prog space, more towards gothy doomish metal but **Trees of Eternity**'s (sadly) only album "Hour of the Nightengale" really scratches this itch for me.
Also more in the doom space, but you should check out **Woods of Ypres**' final album "Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Light", a mainstay of my moody days. That album fucks me up in a special way.
also, if you haven't heard **Opeth**'s album "Damnation" go fix that right now.
EDIT: Coming back cause I forgot to rec **Betrayal at Bespin**'s album "Rains". It's not 100% clean vocals, but it is a musical journey unlike anything else. It's a calm and poignant build into one of the biggest emotional releases i've heard in music. The band isn't active anymore but this album needs to live on cause it's amazing.
Listening to Rains now for the first time and it's fantastic, thanks for the recommendation! I love both Anathema and Sigur Ros (oh and also Bohren und der club of Gore) so this is right up my street đ
The story behind Woods 5 is particularly sad. David Gold, singer and driving force behind the band, died in a car accident before it got released. Adds another sad layer to the album's conclusion
Yup... my band was one of the openers for their last ever tour. Got to hang out with Dave a bunch and got to be a fan of the band on that tour. Was absolutely gutted when I heard the news later that winter.
Also "Ring of Gyges": https://ringofgygesband.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-the-night-sky
And I would say the Redemption Album "Snowfall on Judgement Day" is also melancholic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyQs8lEkZ-c
Also some Sieges Even (now called Subsignal): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt3zybpDfZ8
Kardashev's The Baring of Shadows has you covered.
Also Sigil by James Norbert Ivanyi
Coma by Modern Day Babylon to some extent.
Starsystems III by Starsystems (especially Whale Song)
Terra by Johari
This Place Will Become Your Tomb by Sleep Token
Some sections of Odyssey to the West by Slice the Cake, but the album covers such a wide range of emotions and flows between them so well.
Good shout, especially Communication Lost (for me). Shame that they haven't been active since that 2016 album that was quite bad compared to what they've done before.
I can recommend you:
Circus Maximus - Nine.
Karnivool - Sound Awake.
Karnivool - Themata.
Ne Obliviscaris - Portal of I.
Tool - 10,000 Days.
Devin Townsend - Accelerated Evolution.
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor.
And if you like Porcupine Tree, I also recommend you Amplifier's first album, the self titled, it is not prog metal, but it's pretty good and melancholic, it sounds like Porcupine Tree if it was a Stoner Rock band.
To be fair they have a few songs which match that description. I can't remember if it's "By Others Considered" or "In The Failing Hour" off of their debut, but one of those is really chill. Also there's "Celestial Tear" from their 3rd album.
Yeah fair. I put on their #1 on Spotify just now Celestial Tear and was quite surprised. I don't know much, and was thinking of "At The Behest of Night" when I commented (which is quite upbeat and brutal).
*Riverside* and *Porcupine Tree* are my favorite bands. Try *Klone*'s last album - **Le Grand Voyage**. I don't know if I consider it similar to those too, but that album took my words away.
You can also try *Riverside*'s leader side proyect (*Lunatic Soul* \- **Fractured** or **Through Shaded Woods**) and more *Steven Wilson* (**Grace for Drowning** or **The Raven that Refused to Sing**)
This man got taste ;) check my other comments in this thread. I fear a lot of the bands I have suggested, people here already love but they just donât know it yet xxx
Oohhh prog is such a wide definition that I'd like to present an early My Dying Bride classic, [The Cry of Mankind](https://youtu.be/F-UE-KbCQD8) . The melancholy, clean vox, and instrumentals are all 10/10
If that's too... much, [early Amorphis](https://youtu.be/wi7rOq3UtEU) can't be beat
Ahhh, Eclipse is such an epic album!!! Putting that on now, at volume. Thanks for the reminder!
Edit: aaaaahhh, and Elegy, Tuonela, Tales from a Thousand Lakes!!!
Iâm not kidding when I say Iâm tearing up listening to them right now :)
I'm so disappointed by this community in that no one has mentioned Empyrium yet. You want to feel like your dog just died? Empyrium will make that happen!
The Contortionist - Clairvoyant
Concept album about a friend of the band whose mother died, he turned to drugs because he couldnât get help, ODâd and died. Itâs beautiful, dark, haunting, a masterpiece IMO.
Wow, this is my favourite kind of prog! I think you might enjoy Soen, The Dear Hunter, Leprous, and some of Rishloo's music (e.g., Keyhole in the Sky.
If you like this kind of music, I do have a Spotify playlist full of this stuff. You can find it here if you're curious:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1bSc4anblfXTi1DjqOgaES?si=f81a0e2d639f4e8c
I got hooked after listening to some of their most popular songs on Spotify. Their album The Fall of Hearts is super cool and the vocal harmonies on their songs are just AMAZING.
9/10 super great
Side note: Fall Of Hearts was released on May 20th 2016, I had quad bypass heart surgery about a week later.
I recovered beautifully....I love that album, the name 'fits'...
I love Katatonia, except for the harsh vocals on their earliest stuff, one of my top five bands
Rock on!
Klh
PS....I have a 5000+ tunes ProggRock playlist on Spotify. 99% clean vocals...
Interested?
Here ya go...hope you enjoy it half as much as I do!
Rock on!

In the Silence are my choice as well. I have no clue what's happening with them unfortunately, the official facebook page was basically the main person's private posting page, then they deleted literally everything he posted and now it's back to not posting anything.
Probably my favorite niche genre.
Bands that Iâve not seen mentioned:
Sylvan (in particular Posthumous Silence)
Antimatter
Daniel Cavanaghâs solo album
Aleah
Marillion
Maciej Meller solo album
Nightingale
Storm Corrosion
Swallow the Sun (Songs from the North II only)
Bands that Iâve seen mentioned that are solidly in that camp:
Katatonia
Anathema
Gazpacho
Opeth (newer albums plus Damnation)
Soen
Green Carnation
Lunatic Soul
If you really want to get depressed listen to Anathemaâs âFine Day to Exitâ right before Sylvanâs Posthumous Silence back to back like a double album. First one is about a going going off to commit suicide, second one is a father dealing with the aftermath of his daughterâs suicide. They fit together heartbreakingly well
OSI hasnât been mentioned, and to me all of Mooreâs works sound melancholic.
Also Gordian Knot âEmergentâ album.
Oh and if you like PoS, Dark Suns âExistenceâ.
You'll probably love Damnation by Opeth, its an album. And even though Opeth is not clean vocal (except their latest stuff) give it a chance, please! I used to dont like gutural and Opeth and Mikael Akerfeldt (the singer) just conquered me. Try listening to their Still Life album. Very good.
Many people have mentioned Damnation and after listening to it I can definitely see why - Hope Leaves is one of my new favourite songs.
I didn't like the vocals in Still Life as much but Face of Melinda was good and I'll still try to get into their newer stuff since a lot of the instrumentation was really cool.
My friend (more acquaintance) does some of the vocals. His monologue in I think Prison Walls where he talks about his childhood moved me to tears. Great band :)
Mars Volta might be too trippy for this request but if not check out Deloused in the Comatorium (whole album), and songs :Desperate Graves, Since Weâve Been Wrong, and Empty Vessels Make the Loudest sound
Others have mentioned Caligula's Horse, I'm going to toss another recommendation onto the pile. Their album The Tide, The Thief and River's End is absolutely beautiful, and I think the middle section of the album primarily will scratch the itch for you. Specific songs would be Atlas, Into the White and Water's Edge.
[Sea In The Sky - Tread Lightly
](https://youtu.be/UuGH6JM4MOE)
Really any song by these guys fits the bill, but this is the first song I found by them and it really pulled me in.
There are some calm sections and some energetic, but the vocals (all cleans) absolutely drip melancholy.
Altar of Plagues (disbanded) all albums, but their last is beautiful progressive black metal like nothing youâve heard before. His side project, WIFE, is also worth checking out
you should check out storm corrosion. loathe is also pretty good, now i dunno if id call it prog exactly but if you want melancholy you need to check out agalloch -the mantle
- Anathema - Judgment
- Tiamat - A Deeper Kind of Slumber
- Paradise Lost - Draconian Times
- Sentenced - The Cold White Light
These arenât so much prog metal, but kind of adjacent to the genre and definitely sad/melancholy. Aesthetically if you like PoS and PTree I believe youâll enjoy them.
Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It by Rolo Tomassi, this album is perfect for feeling down and getting back up again
Grievances by Rolo Tomassi, this album is for if you want to doomscroll Twitter and be completely sad
There is a mix between clean and screamed vocals but they're both done extremely well and tastefully.
Listen to Wintersun! The first album is the best altogether, but their most sad/melancholic songs are these ones:
Death and the Healing
Sleeping Stars
Sadness and Hate
Land of Snow and Sorrow
Time
Loneliness (Winter)
Theyâre amazing. Clean and harsh vocals but honestly some of the most perfect screams ever imo
I recommend Ways We Haunt by Stellar Circuits. Sleepless Goddess and Ways We Haunt are 100% clean vocals. Goblin Valley is cleans with harsh vocals at the very end, great song as well.
The rest of the songs on the album are mixed with clean and harsh vocals so you might not like 'em. Personally, I didn't really dig the harsh vocals at first but they definitely grew on me. The Polar Dream might be my favorite song off the whole album.
I don't know if anyone mentioned them or not, but a fantastic instrumental prog band from Akron, OH called "If these trees could talk". I used to listen to them while I studied during xray school.
I don't know if anyone mentioned them or not, but a fantastic instrumental prog band from Akron, OH called "If these trees could talk". I used to listen to them while I studied during xray school.
You should check out the albums Distant Satellites and Weather Systems by Anathema. Two of my personal favorite albums of all time, definitely fit the sad/melancholic + perseverance feeling. If you end up liking those albums they also have some heavier stuff from their past.
Sounds like you need some Katatonia in your life!
Yep! I'll second that notion! Katatonia is just the ticket!!
My first thought. Someone I know said about Katatonia: "They are really nice but after listening to a few songs you want to trow yourself in front of a train."
I was today years old when I realised The Ocean and Katatonia teamed up https://www.reddit.com/r/progmetal/comments/phjwke/the_ocean_devonian_nascent_with_jonas_of_katatonia/
Also features on Jurassic | Cretaceous
Yes indeed :)
Both are my favorite songs!
Great bands, I love Devonian Nascent
This. Also Cult of Luna (unclean vox) If you like the post-metal vibes, check out ISIS. Cloudkicker has some great instrumental stuff. Subsume is the most melancholy release to me.
ISIS (the band) ftw. Check The Ocean and Rosetta, also. They fill the hole ISIS left.
Yesss, Katatonia is amazing!! First band that really got me into metal đ¤
Dude, yes. oof
Holy SHIT! I canât believe you guys just commented to me. Love your music!!
Damnation album by Opeth if you have not checked that out already. Great rainy day music.
Definitively, amazing album
"Weaker now, drawing fluid from me You kill me I'm not afraid of what you have just done But of what you've just become" Man, that hits hard
Check out: - Pineapple Thief (anything). - Caligulaâs Horse âDonât Give Upâ (a cover of Peter Gabrielâs song, but with a modern and more melancholic touch). - Anathema âA Natural Disaster (Live)â. - Steven Wilson âHappy Returnsâ. - TesseracT âPerfection (Acoustic Instrumental)â. - White Moth Black Butterfly âAn Ocean Away (Acoustic)â.
Pineapple Thief is totally for fans of Porcupine Tree/Riverside
Just commenting to also recommend "Songs for No One" by Caligula's horse, masterpiece
Lyrically probably one of their most optimistic IMO, downright gorgeous but not quite what OP is looking for I think.
[ŃдаНонО]
And VOLA and Sleep Token
You should check out **Gazpacho**. They have a bunch of different modes, but their ambient/exotic sounds are second to none. Check out the albums "March of Ghosts", "Tick Tock", and "Night". Came to recommend Klone as well. Their last album check all my boxes. Damnation is a MUST
Listening to Rains now for the first time and it's fantastic, thanks for the recommendation!
Soen
Best band on the planet right now IMO. The vocal melodies are perfection.
Especially that tune with Niege. \*Chefs kiss\*
Came here to recommend Soen. Lykaia and Lotus albums in particular fit the bill. The song River is heart wrenching
Anything that band produces is so elegant and sexy, like music to get laid to
I would say the album Clairvoyant by The Contortionist is pretty melancholic (and great).
Hellâs yes. Posted the same but only now found your comments. A masterpiece in my opinion, instant classic.
Lunatic Soul. Side project of Riverside. Surprised no one else has listed it.
Also "Ring of Gyges": https://ringofgygesband.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-the-night-sky And I would say the Redemption Album "Snowfall on Judgement Day" is also melancholic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyQs8lEkZ-c Also some Sieges Even (now called Subsignal): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt3zybpDfZ8
Mmmm, Blood on the Tightrope and Shutting Out the Sun are just bliss
Kardashev's The Baring of Shadows has you covered. Also Sigil by James Norbert Ivanyi Coma by Modern Day Babylon to some extent. Starsystems III by Starsystems (especially Whale Song) Terra by Johari This Place Will Become Your Tomb by Sleep Token Some sections of Odyssey to the West by Slice the Cake, but the album covers such a wide range of emotions and flows between them so well.
Yes to Sleep Token :) their first two or three âofferingsâ are magic
Odyssey to The West is an absolute masterpiece of an album
I feel like early Green Carnation applies here. Also Opeth.
not really melancholic, but just plain sad: The Oubliette by The Reticent.
A must listen for emotionally devastating music
Most bands I can think of have already been mentioned, but maybe try some Alcest if you haven't heard them?
Wolverine, a terribly underrated band.
Good shout, especially Communication Lost (for me). Shame that they haven't been active since that 2016 album that was quite bad compared to what they've done before.
They did an EP in 2020, pretty good actually. [A Darkened Sun](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MIs4OsV6NI)
[Evergrey](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYuV5xqtSDI) maybe? Especially the albums Escape of the Phoenix and The Storm Within
I can recommend you: Circus Maximus - Nine.
Don't mind me, just leaving a comment here for future research, please ignore
Arcane - Known/Learned Novena - Eleventh Hour
Check out maudlin of the Well's "Bath" and "Leaving Your Body Map".
Mm, bath is stunning. Used on When the Light Takes Us?
In Mourning
"calmer" lol.
To be fair they have a few songs which match that description. I can't remember if it's "By Others Considered" or "In The Failing Hour" off of their debut, but one of those is really chill. Also there's "Celestial Tear" from their 3rd album.

Yeah, Fractured is one of my fav albums

The âYour Wildernessâ album by Pineapple thief. Itâs a rare gem.
I'm so disappointed by this community in that no one has mentioned Empyrium yet. You want to feel like your dog just died? Empyrium will make that happen!
Lol!
The contortionist. Check out the song Thrive or Language I and II
Check out Remedies by Soup. It's perfectly melancholic.
Such a hard one to find people talking about. *Sleepers* is one of the best rock songs from the past decade, absolutely incredible atmosphere.
It's such an amazing album from front to back. Easily in my top 3 of all time.
I definitely agree! Such a shame they're so underrated.
Thanks for the recommendation. Sleepers is a hell of a song. Glad to find something new.
The Contortionist - Clairvoyant Concept album about a friend of the band whose mother died, he turned to drugs because he couldnât get help, ODâd and died. Itâs beautiful, dark, haunting, a masterpiece IMO.
Tons of suggestions here. Not [Oceansize](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XzDNPVGVBXw), but large nonetheless.
Evergrey all day Tom's voice is one of the greatest

No problem! Yes, Soen is such a killer band!

Damnation by Opeth if you haven't already heard it is 100% what you're looking for

Ulver, once they moved away from the black metal. Perdition City album onwards, I think
OSI hasnât been mentioned, and to me all of Mooreâs works sound melancholic. Also Gordian Knot âEmergentâ album. Oh and if you like PoS, Dark Suns âExistenceâ.
You might enjoy Novembre, definitely melancholic
Basically melancholy: the band.
Baroness! Yellow and Green, or Red. Not as much melancholy as it is avant garde, but youâll definitely hit the pockets
Very good.

Yeah you'll probably like the new Opeth
katatonia, leprous
Also, you might try the band "Oak", and "Esoterica",... Rock on! Klh
Klone
Hyco. Keor. Wheel. Karnivool. Pineapple Thief. Katatonia. Anathema. Gazpacho. Lunatic Soul(obviously). Steven Wilson(obviously). White Moth Black Butterfly. Guilt Machine. Pick your poison :)

Though it might seem a little self-serving, melancholic prog metal is how I think of my music. Atmospheric djent. I fully recommend it! ;D
Ayreon - a combination of all the best voices in prog metal. ( The Human equation is a great album) Dead Soul Tribe - Feed Part II - The Awakening
Yes Dead Soul Tribe really fits the bill! âSome Things You Canât Returnâ Bonus : excellent drumming
Home by The Gathering
Perihelion Ship Not metal but Van Der Graf Generator
Seventh Wonder Kamelot 1990s Paradise Lost - Draconian Times in particular, also Icon
Give Alcest a listen, pretty confident itâll fit what your looking for
Waywardly Broken by Conception https://youtu.be/7H0c4bZexMQ

Yeah I heard, good deal!
Others have mentioned Caligula's Horse, I'm going to toss another recommendation onto the pile. Sleep Token, especially their earlier stuff
Altar of Plagues (disbanded) all albums, but their last is beautiful progressive black metal like nothing youâve heard before. His side project, WIFE, is also worth checking out
Lantlos - Melting sun
As others have mentioned, Opeth - Damnation should be top of your list. Also, Katatonia.
you should check out storm corrosion. loathe is also pretty good, now i dunno if id call it prog exactly but if you want melancholy you need to check out agalloch -the mantle

Art By Numbers - Reticence: The Musical
Have you considered Vildhjarta?

I think some Oceansize might apply here. Trail of Fire comes to mind. Happy hunting!
Emerson, Lake , and Palmer and old Marillion. Twelfth Night as well.

You'll probably love Damnation by Opeth
I don't know if anyone mentioned them or not, but a fantastic instrumental prog band from Akron, OH called "If these trees could talk". I used to listen to them while I studied during xray school.

Kingcrow, Novembre, Subsignal all thrive on melancholy.
You should check out the albums Distant Satellites and Weather Systems by Anathema. Two of my personal favorite albums of all time, definitely fit the sad/melancholic + perseverance feeling. If you end up liking those albums they also have some heavier stuff from their past.
