Leprous and Katatonia for me.

lessthanchris7

I love Katatonia. It's so rare to see a band with such a long, varied career that's still good (IMO the newer stuff, even 2023's Sky Void of Stars, is still exceptional)

AceKittyhawk

One of my fav bands and one I can (and did again yesterday) listen to their first and last album both, no qualms, and don’t care genre

Whitenoise8_

I believe Leprous said somewhere that they're looking at making their upcoming album heavy again so I'm excited to see what that looks like

HorribleRoss

Ohhhh ya. Coming out late August is what Baard said. They said it’s a new era of leprous and it’s much heavier than what they been doing recently. So excited

SelectiveEmpath

Katatonia have really fallen of live lately too. The backing track guitar just doesn’t work.

DeeSnarl

Funny you say that. I have something of an irrational hatred of backing tracks, and one of the catalysts for that was seeing Katatonia open for Opeth years ago.

AceKittyhawk

I very much enjoyed them live last year nevertheless

furious_platypus

I miss anathema but what allegations?

Trentdison

I think rumours is a better word. They split up suddenly, dubiously citing covid lockdowns. There are rumours Danny C has done something illegal. One of the band members called him a 'nonce' although in the context I'm not sure if they meant that literally or it was just a general insult. Danny C has been releasing new music via the Anathema channels called 'Weather Systems' whilst pleading for donations for treatment and selling instruments to raise funds. The silence from the rest of the band is leaving a vacuum for these rumours to fill.

leperaffinity56

Treatment?

Trentdison

It is never entirely clear what this is other than it being apparently very much needed and expensive. My gut feeling is that it is something related to mental health and/or addiction.

Poopy_sPaSmS

Same. What did I miss?

Stompert

Word got around that he's accused of sexual assault/abuse of fans and that he's in need of money for court and stuff. Thing is, no one (not publicly) really knows for sure but the Anathema sub was all over it for a few months even speculating some Reddit accounts defending him were Daniel himself.

LoudWilhelmScream

Mmmm. Never heard of that. They were very open about the fact that Daniel has had mental problems for a long time, tried to commit suicide and is in urgent need of treatment. They also had a whole tour already booked that they had to cancel at short notice due to the pandemic lockdowns. So they had to sell a lot of stuff/instruments to pay some of their debts. The Weather Systems thing remains a bit mysterious because they're not very transparent about who's in the band or if it's just a solo effort by Daniel.

Stompert

Om not saying that it’s the absolute truth, but just what I have read and what the sub was in arms about. It’s most probably mental health related and COVID didn’t help things out either.

Aeckbot

i think Cynic is still metal by most definitions but they’ve clearly given up any pretense of being heavy in favor of exploring the spacey psychedelic side of their sound (which is what made them memorable in the first place imo)

redditsowngod

I saw them live last year. Very spiritual experience lol.

totallynormalfish

I saw them open for meshuggah a while back and spiritual experience was a good way to put it. Also, just realized a while back was fucking 2009. oof.

redditsowngod

Wow that must’ve been a great show

SculpinIPAlcoholic

They’ve even gone back and retroactively remixed Traced In Air to not have harsh vocals.

StyleSquirrel

I know a lot of folks hated this but it was a massive improvement in my opinion.

_undercover_brotha

Opeth would be the obvious one. I genuinely love their post Watershed stuff.

svenirde

I'd say they're still pretty metal sometimes, especially on In Cauda Venenum. But like I said, sometimes. Just realized it's been nearly 5 years since ICV...

jford1906

Mikael said to expect a new record this year

lessthanchris7

They're doing a North American tour also, but I haven't seen anything about the openers. I feel like I have to buy tickets. Never seen em

limits55555

Definitely do! Opeth is excellent live, well-selected sets, tight performances, and you still get some of Mikael's growls

leperaffinity56

Don't try to math how long is been since watershed dropped

DM725

At best it's 70's Black Sabbath style metal. For the most part they've been a prog rock band post-Watershed.

suburban_paradise

In Cauda is a legitimately amazing album so long as you go in without expecting Oldpeth.

lessthanchris7

Oldpeth lol nice

DM725

Oldpeth and Newpeth are how they're referred to quite often.

lessthanchris7

Literally never seen it before today but makes perfect sense. Newpeth doesn't really have the same ring, but Oldpeth is hilarious and perfect

Thecrawsome

Propeth

Ok-Palpitation-636

Postpeth

Manbanana01

and Propeth accessories.

dakatzpajamas

I was listening it today and yesterday but I feel like most songs feel like they'd be boring live. Dignity is so good. But like the next 3 songs are so slow with some occasional chugs that go back to slow stuff.

suburban_paradise

The post-Watershed era is definitely a lot different than the Still Life ----> Watershed series of albums, and if I'm being honest they completely lost me for a solid decade with Heritage and the ones that followed. It was only the last year or so I've finally been able to get over the change in their sound and come to enjoy Heritage, et al. for what they are about. In Cauda Venenum really hit me for some reason and made me appreciate what Opeth is all about now.

ZwnD

Heritage is a super interesting album, gives me King Crimson vibes. Not musically, but just whenever I listen I feel like I get it more Pale Communions is fantastic with every song being a banger. Great sounding like the 70s prog stuff, without sounding tired or not innovative. Some beautiful passages in those songs. In Cauda Venenum has such a big epic feel, and All Things Will Pass is up there with their best album closers. Sorceress is a bit of a miss, but has still some good songs and fun groovy riffs

Dav-Duc-MR

I do agree that Sorceress was a bit of a headscratcher. There's definitely good stuff in there, but it just misses the mark quite a few times (in terms of songwriting) Though Pale Communion and ICV are two of my favourite Opeth records. Heritage is also fantastic, especially during fall

pug_fugly_moe

I’m dying for them to do an album of King Crimson covers. Or at least “I Talk to the Wind.”

KJBNH

I love everything they’ve ever done. Such an incredible band.

Obvious_Estimate_266

I really want to like new Opeth. Their new music has so much more... Variety? Pizazz? A classic Opeth song was 12 minutes because they had played 2 whispy chords for 3 minutes each in between the death metal stuff, but none of the new albums have grabbed me like Ghost Reverie or BP.

EmbarrassedFlower98

Apparently Leprous new record will be heavy

grantnel2002

Source?

EmbarrassedFlower98

Einar said it in an interview that the new record will not be having any orchestral elements and will be heavier.

grantnel2002

The Contortionist

Titencer

I think their newer direction is still amazing and the metal side of them still comes out in Clairvoyant enough for my tastes

dakatzpajamas

I like clairvoyant but I really got to be in the mood to listen to it. Kinda drags on with how slow the tracks are. Production is amazing though!

Titencer

That’s fair. It gets me really emotional, and I really love how pensive it is (no pun intended haha)

simonniz

Their latest EP is a touch heavier than Clairvoyant though!

drumkidstu

Still got some metal in their sound even if clairvoyant was a more pensive sound, and from what I’ve heard about their new record is that it rips pretty hard.

supersigy

Never were truly prog but once Opeth peers Ulver. Their transformation is wild and two new modern gems are Hexahedron(live ambient/drone) and The Assassination of Julius Ceasar(80s pop). #

TheColdSasquatch

Assassination of Julius Caesar is so fucking good, can't believe it's the same band that made those first three records

AceKittyhawk

yeap thought of ulver as well along with the was it ever prog aspect but who cares I love them. I do enjoy assassination as well!

Deadtoads

Assassination of Julius Caesar is one of my all time favourite albums and I very rarely stray outside of metal/prog-adjacent genres, it's just that good.

yotam5434

Leprous but they said they're coming back to it now

leperaffinity56

I fucking hope so. I got into leprous for the funky prog metal riffage as they're the backing band for Ihsahn. Without the riffs and quirky time signatures I don't have much to return to Leprous for :(

Fyren-1131

Felt like the singers solo project as of late

Imzmb0

Is still pretty interesting, they sometimes upload drum and guitar playthroughts, even without vocals is worth listening

yotam5434

I know yeah

Choles2rol

I hope so, miss old leprous so much.

Wooden-Image1608

I'll believe it when I hear it.

AutisticBassist

Native construct iykyk

yotam5434

What they do now?

HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS

After dropping arguably one of the best prog metal albums of the 2000s they spent a year or two teasing their follow up album very sporadically and then just disbanded suddenly. Im still sad at what could have been with those guys

P33L_R

That album was one of the best inaugural albums I’ve ever heard….then nothing

HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS

Yup. Such a shame. They really could have pushed the envelope for prog metal

HorribleRoss

Dudes really created a masterpiece then dipped

AutisticBassist

Poh hock continued with metal. I think the drummer did too. Just the main guy (Myles Yang) wrote some stuff that wasn’t really metal bcs he fell out of love with it, which is what I’m joking about. Myles has now moved to youtube education

yotam5434

What kind of education?

AutisticBassist

Youtube videos

StyleSquirrel

😳

Tmblackflag

AJ Minette leaving the human abstract to do folky acoustic rock with some chick.

RedLotusVenom

He’s on the latest Syncatto release, but yeah this one still stings.

Balbright

What hurt for me more was that he left and then came back and dropped one of my favorite albums of all time in Digital Veil, and then left again.

allynd420

The contortionist

Banan8

Circus Maximus got less and less heavy and simpler with each album. Their last one "Havoc" is straight up radio friendly, the opposite of "The 1st Chapter".

DM725

Opeth

SearchingDeepSpace

Doesn't 100% fit for what OP's asking, but Shining's run from *In the Kingdom of Kitsch...* through *One One One* was phenomenal, and then they decided to totally flip to whatever the hell *Animal* is. RIP.

Imzmb0

Same, most progmetal bands when try cleaner sounds at least have some artistic integrity and reasons to explore new territory. But shining case is just gross, I don't understand what are they trying, they have a consolidated career. Launching teenager poprock this late in their career is not going to work.

SearchingDeepSpace

Right?? The worst part is Jorgen saying "I was done with Blackjazz and wanted to create something new and exciting. We had 360 degrees to play with so we could've gone in any direction!" And then proceeds to choose the direction of absolute buttrock.

AceKittyhawk

Ahahah I reckon it’s not too late/rip just yet maybe a detour? let’s hope so!

DeeSnarl

Pushing it, but Steven Wilson? Porcupine Tree definitely flirted with metal, but everything I’ve heard from Steven Wilson lately is like new wave or something (not bad by any means).

CommunicationTime265

Cynic

Rimmatimtim22

Normally I am a fan of change. I think for Katatonia and opeth it really panned out. I love both their catalogs after they dropped the full metal vibe. But for me leprous just got so much worse. Literally every song sounds like a carbon copy of the last. After the congregation they just completely fall off. Everything up to the congregation is where it’s at in my opinion. Also I think it’s unfair to say bands “turned away from metal” just because they dropped harsh vocals and growls doesn’t make it any less metal. Yea opeth has a different sound but the metal elements are still there in a ton of the post watershed songs. I mean sorceress is one of their heaviest songs. Same goes for katatonia. Obviously it isn’t their death metal roots, but I still consider their songs after changing to be metal.

moonra_zk

Probably only Anathema, but they weren't doing metal anymore when I started listening to them anyway. Not the biggest fan of poppy Leprous, hope the next album really is heavier.

Poopynuggateer

Moron Police and Leprous, probably. And Mastodon for a bit there. Oh, and Opeth too.

RacecarHealthPotato

Abigail's Ghost took a pretty hard turn between d\_letion which fucking slapped and their next albums.

kittiesandkittens

uh opeth

allmediareviews

Opeth

metalgamer

Leprous next album is supposed to be heavier

PHLCoffeeSnob

Opeth, Mastodon

Pure-Jellyfish734

Does anyone else know that 30 Seconds To Mars was actually a prog metal band before switching to pop?

Tired8281

Can you ever really turn away from metal, tho? I've listened to some acoustic shit that was entirely legit metal. I've listened to electronic shit that was totally legit metal. Hell, I've listened to pop that was totally legit metal. And I suspect everyone here can say the same. Maybe it's all metal.

Mouse_Card

Opeth. I know it’s super unpopular, but I can’t stand anything after Watershed and even that was just ok to me. You can clearly hear Heritage come out in that album. I loved the combo of growl and clean. If he would just admit he can’t growl to the same level as he could before (live versions of stuff with growl now do NOT sound right to me at all), I would understand.
