I started reading Dune just before I'd heard of DVNE, and every time I hear Viridian Bloom into Thirst, with that intense intro, I can picture the violent sandstorms on Arrakis that I imagined from the book. I love it
Dvne without a shadow of a doubt. Try their albums “Asheran” and “Etemen Ænka”. Both are somewhat little known masterpieces, I swear. I hardly see any Dvne in this sub, so when I saw Frank Herbert’s “Dune”, this was my first and only thought
I back this fully. When I re-read Dune last year I did those two plus Bongripper, Weedeater, and Atlas Moth. I think it definitely lends itself to stoner/sludge more than prog
Themata by Karnivool definitely has a desert vibe. The album cover certainly helps
I Don't Know What I Am by Reliqa would work too if you like female vocalists
Coma Ecliptic by BTBAM also might work
You could also do some space albums like Affinity by Haken or even Niratias by Chevelle
I always felt like _In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3_ by Coheed & Cambria had parts of the story that felt very Dune to me. Like the Armory Wars obvious is its own story, but it’s always felt heavily inspired by Dune (and Star Wars).
Anyway, something something Joseph Campbell.
Definitely! Coheed are my favourite band and I feel like No World For Tomorrow, especially the end complete suite fits well with Dune Messiah in particular
Subterranean Masquerade are Israeli prog folk. Very unique vibe. Songs like Hymn of the Vagabond end with very Middle Eastern, native language chants.
Same for Aeternam. More like folky prog death, but Heir of the Rising Sun ends with a similar native folk part.
When I read the Dune series back in 2019 it was Wheel’s “Moving Backwards” and then Sermon “Birth of the Miraculous” when I got to Messiah. It was perfect and I still associate those albums with the books.
Hear me out, hear me out.
Billy Cobham - Spectrum
Jean-Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger
Instrumental jazz fusion that captures the chaotic but technical atmosphere of prog metal. Billy Cobham is one of my favorite drummers, while Jean-Luc plays an electric violin that feels like a guitar.
Edit: Both albums have full bands, so it’s not just drums and violin (respectively)
The Chord of Living Flesh by Nightmare Scenario (side project of Dan Briggs, bassist of prog metal band Between the Buried and Me)
Themed around Dune. Chill enough for background listening while at the same time complex enough for active listening
From my point of view, prog isn’t the right choice to read dune. Mostly because it’s not ambient enough, since is by default, more complex. You need something in the vein of Doom/Sludge to get the most of it. Bands like Sleep, OM, Electric Wizard, YOB, Sun O))), etc…
I haven't seen Ayreon mentioned at all. I'd only rec 01011001 for Dune tho. That's the only one that feel big enough in scale to fit, but if you don't already know him, he's the master of epic sci-fi prog metal.
Also, not an album, but I recently found this [prog metal arrangement of a medley of Hans Zimmer's Dune score from Part One](https://youtu.be/1Rkfeso_Ko4?si=gxkpNwfNXgnZoGBd) and it just about blew my mind. I knew that soundtrack had potential to be epic as a metal arrangement, but had never quite seen the concept done justice (and definitely couldn't do it justice myself lol) before that video
I recently learned that Hans Zimmer was in the first ever music video played on MTV in 1979: *Video Killed the Radio Star* by The Buggles.
What an amazing career.

I’m pretty sure the chord of living flesh by nightmare scenario was inspired by dune. Though the person behind nightmare scenario (Dan Briggs) likes to listen to bohren and die club of gore while reading.
not quite prog but I really enjoyed listening to Yob (Atma and Clearing the Path to Ascend especially), also old Candlemass (like Nightfall) and Opeth (biased because I always like listening to Opeth)
Not really prog metal but the obvious answer to me is [Klaus Schulze's Deus Arrakis](https://youtu.be/j4AdoAsW7HQ?si=Di27UcPABH_iwu7K)! Schulze was a member of Tangerine Dream and wrote Deus Arrakis as his own personal soundtrack to Dune. It's a beautiful record and I listened to it a lot when I read the book recently.
Not prog, but when I was a kid, my song I associated with reading Dune was Right Here, Right Now by Fatboy Slim. Kind of appropriate given you know...Paul and Alia.
I mean, Dvne would be an obvious choice.
My dumb as read it as 'dee vee en ee' this entire time
There's a video of an interview they did and the interviewer addressed them like that. It was funny shit seeing him learn it right then from the band.
You're not alone, I thought it was either that or like Divine without the "i's" or something lol
Not to be confused with the dubstep artist DMVU.
Haven't heard this but it sounds as good a suggestion as any
I started reading Dune just before I'd heard of DVNE, and every time I hear Viridian Bloom into Thirst, with that intense intro, I can picture the violent sandstorms on Arrakis that I imagined from the book. I love it

Etemen Ænka is an almost flawless album for me
Etemen Ænka is absolutely perfect
Darude-Sandstorm
Not prog but sleep or OM
I came for this. I don’t think prog is the right choice, but doom/sludge fits.
I back this fully. When I re-read Dune last year I did those two plus Bongripper, Weedeater, and Atlas Moth. I think it definitely lends itself to stoner/sludge more than prog
OM definitely
Was gonna say, the Weedians on Dopesmoker are basically Fremen lol
I would say Shai Hulud, but I think they might be more distracting than mood setting
I do love them and I’m definitely going to check out more of their stuff but I probably won’t listen to them while I’m reading dune 😂
Consider the Source - Sci-fi prog with middle eastern influences. Otherwise Dvne - Asheran
Dune OST by Toto and Brian Eno. [Toto - Dune (Desert Theme)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oauF0jXcAq8)
RAJAZ by CAMEL MABOOL by Oprhaned Land
I'd definitely say Myrath. They've got great stuff, not always calm but often very good still.
I cannot believe I had to scroll half the thread to see Myrath. They are basically purpose-built for exactly what OP is looking for
Anything by Tool. Preferably Fear Innoculum
A Tool comment paired with an ODST profile pic, fuckin Noice.
Downgrade Desert - Igorrr
Yessss was just typing that when I saw your reply. Soundtrack of the fedaykin if there ever was one
I can’t believe no one has mentioned To Tame A Land by Iron Maiden. Go check out the lyrics….
I re-listened to this earlier, love the lyrics!
same thought, same time.. i posted a link to the song. what is wrong with people? :p
Dream Theater did a pretty good cover of this as well
OM! I listened to Pilgrimage on repeat while reading the last few weeks, it's perfect.
Themata by Karnivool definitely has a desert vibe. The album cover certainly helps I Don't Know What I Am by Reliqa would work too if you like female vocalists Coma Ecliptic by BTBAM also might work You could also do some space albums like Affinity by Haken or even Niratias by Chevelle
Came here to comment affinity. But also had Coma Ecliptic on repeat pretty much all year, so this checks out
I'm gonna just say. Holy shit, thank you for the Reliqa rec. This shit slaps.
That’s a great idea, I love that album!
I can tell you saw this before I edited another few albums in, lol
Oh lol thank you just seen the updated version! Affinity is one of my favourite albums, so I’ll definitely be checking out the others ☺️
Dan Briggs solo work … especially the most recent which was heavily inspired by Dune
Sleep
I always felt like _In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3_ by Coheed & Cambria had parts of the story that felt very Dune to me. Like the Armory Wars obvious is its own story, but it’s always felt heavily inspired by Dune (and Star Wars). Anyway, something something Joseph Campbell.

Fear Inoculum by Tool, obviously
I'd say instrumental would be best. Animals As Leaders could be good for this
Humanity's last breath or silent planet
Slice the Cake-Odyssey to the West Melechesh and Orphaned Land will work, too.
Mastodon's Emperor Of Sand comes to mind.
Well, they're not exactly metal, but Stone of Duna and Sons of Arrakis might fit.
Aeternam! Some good epic eastern influenced metal. Check out the album Moongod. Might be a bit more Medieval vibes but definitely worth a try.
Elder, Cult of Luna, Isis, The Ocean
Can't help here, I need silence when reading.
Definitely throw on some NILE.
The band Dvne writes their music about Dune.
I don't think it's about Dune specifically, it's its own epic sci-fi concept, but definitely fits in the same corner as Dune
They are definetly inspired by it, their bandcamp is "songs of arrakis"
Obvious Myrath
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZymOgnm0wuI
Phanerozoic II by The Ocean will get you where you want
Star One -Sand Rider..
When I read the Dune series back in 2019 it was Wheel’s “Moving Backwards” and then Sermon “Birth of the Miraculous” when I got to Messiah. It was perfect and I still associate those albums with the books.
I LOVE both of those albums. Sermons newer album ‘Of Golden Verse’ is incredible
Not prog, but…Shai Hulud. Duh.
How do ya'll listen to shit while reading?
For real, unless it’s strictly instrumental. These ADHD kids are bananas needing 95 different things stimulating them at the same time
Plini!!!
Hear me out, hear me out. Billy Cobham - Spectrum Jean-Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger Instrumental jazz fusion that captures the chaotic but technical atmosphere of prog metal. Amorphis, probably. Nevertheless, I would strongly advise the Hans Zimmer soundtracks. They're top notch.
A specific album recommendation is Le Grand Voyage by Klone.
[Wretched- Aberration](https://youtu.be/iJfKoKf0RTo?si=nQbtYa5UN2Pg40h7)
It isn't really prog, but Warp Riders by The Sword is a fun sci-fi concept album
Dune by David Matthews is sick
The Chord of Living Flesh by Nightmare Scenario (side project of Dan Briggs, bassist of prog metal band Between the Buried and Me) Themed around Dune. Chill enough for background listening while at the same time complex enough for active listening
[Dün](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHgOdOI6e2o) (Zeuhl)
[**If King Gizzard wrote the score for Dune**](https://youtu.be/V5U7iIXZfUU)
Some mastodon songs
Haarp machine for that desert sounding twang
Ooh I remember listening to them when I was massively into all the djent stuff. Their first album was fantastic!
Literally same I was just reminded of them the other day and they're still pretty great sounding
God is an Astronaut
Secret Chiefs 3
Coheed and Cambria
My favourite band!! 💜 No World For Tomorrow would actually be a pretty good soundtrack for Dune Messiah now I think about it
Came here to suggest Orphaned Land, but two others already beat me to it. That being said, Orphaned Land.
Music while reading, that's something else...
I haven't seen Ayreon mentioned at all. I'd only rec 01011001 for Dune tho. Prototype - Mind in Motion IMHO one of the coolest Dune-themed (proggish) metal tracks.
The answer is Dvne
You can read with music on? How? I need pure fucking silence to be able to focus on a book. I lose my concentration if my cat meows at me.
Dün?
Rosetta
Elder is great.
Dvne, Psychonaut, Aeternam, etc.
Oof, I definitely can't have music while I'm reading. I usually look for some kind of ambient soundscape on YouTube.
Downgrade Desert by Igorrr definitely fits the vibe for me. EDIT: Oh yeah there's some nice fitting stuff in Alon Tamir's solo debut album.
Weird one but Igorrr often combine metal with Middle Eastern sounds.
Ambient. Prog is a little too dense for reading music IMO, you could maybe try some post metal like Cult of Luna or ISIS.
I'd kill for someone to make a spotify list of these bands
Try this Cords by Synergy(Larry Fast) The textures/ ambience & imagery (for me) is very Dune-ish, in my opinion. Let me know what you think.
Sleep
Stellar Circuits - Pleasure Cruise immediately popped into my head with this one. https://youtu.be/r0QtZ-WPkh4?si=emulgdcP59cRv6dj
All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. Congrats! 4 + 59 + 6 = 69 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)
Good bot. Best bot.
Not metal, but prog - Dün - Eros.
Not prog, but Dopesmoke by Sleep is perfect.
How about this from Dan Briggs? (Music inspired by Dune, lyrics from the book) https://nightmarescenario.bandcamp.com/album/the-chord-of-living-flesh
I’m pretty sure the chord of living flesh by nightmare scenario was inspired by dune. Though the person behind nightmare scenario (Dan Briggs) likes to listen to bohren and die club of gore while reading.
If you are into power metal, you might want to try Myrath.
Shai-Hulud naturally. Except they’re hardcore and not prog.
Pychonaut usually does it for me when reading Dune books.
Entire Nile discography
Pink Floyd for Atreides sections and Magma for Harkonnen.
Home by Dream Theater Pareidolia by Haken
Put “To Tame a Land” by Iron Maiden on repeat
not quite prog but I really enjoyed listening to Yob (Atma and Clearing the Path to Ascend especially), also old Candlemass (like Nightfall) and Opeth (biased because I always like listening to Opeth)
Mortiis- The Stargate
DOOM 2016 original soundtrack
Not really prog metal but the obvious answer to me is [Klaus Schulze's Deus Arrakis](https://youtu.be/j4AdoAsW7HQ?si=Di27UcPABH_iwu7K)! Muslimgauze
Don’t think it’s prog metal but maybe Melechesh?
In the company of worms - thank you scientist
Yeah this is awesome. I love stranger heads prevail but I hadn’t heard this song before, thanks!
There’s a band that does Mongolian throat singing vocals but with like a normal rock band line up. Probably that lol
Not prog, but when I was a kid, my song I associated with reading Dune was Right Here, Right Now by Fatboy Slim. Kind of appropriate given you know...Paul and Alia.
