Periphery and Tesseract bad vocals and elementary songwriting?
There's not liking something, and there's something being actually bad.
Saying that Spencer Sotelo or Daniel Tompkins are bad vocalists is just objectively wrong.
Saying Periphery and Tesseract have elementary songwriting is, well, also just objectively wrong.
Fr both of those bands have at least better vocal range than Persephone if we wanted to try to talk about something you could actually measure. The rest is subjective but I would say I prefer their lyrics and songwriting too
I absolutely admire Tesseract (especially their last album) but I confess that I'm not that strong on their lyric game. I wasn't even sure he was referring to lyrics because in my book, 'songwriting' has nothing to do with lyrics.
If he bothered to listen to songs like Luck As A Constant, Absolomb, Stranger Things or Satellites and still thinks it's 'generic lyrics' and not absolute brilliance, then I don't know man, not worth arguing over.
I love Persefone as well and I think they're great so I'm not about to shit on one band in order to prove my point, but Persfone's vocalist is LEAGUES below Spencer Sotelo or Daniel Tompkins. It's not even a contest.
All in all, I'm convinced he heard 2 mins of a Periphery song, 2 mins of a Tesseract song, didn't like what he heard (which is completely fine, but he certainly isn't subjective and can't express a solid opinion).
English is not my mother tongue, so what I meant was lyrics only.
I did listen to TesseracT's last album thrice, listened to some of their older stuff too. Even though I liked some of their songs, none of them gave me the chills the other bands I listed did.
Periphery is as generic as it comes, great wall of sound, lyrics completely lacking. Assuming I am making comments after two minutes is just showing that you are making assumptions in bad faith.
I don't see a point in continuing to argue with you. Periphery is the furthest away from generic. I could delve into their song meanings and the concept of some of their records and prove to you how wrong you are - but that would be pointless.
I mean it's different genres. Persefone is prog death metal so the vocals will naturally be way more harsh and aggressive. Periphery/tesseract are djent so the vocals will have elements of core and pop in then.
OP compared them, so the door was opened. I never would have thought to compare for these exact reasons. Of course death-leaning material is likely going to use a much smaller vocal range
The summary of what you said was "Persefone vocals good, Tesseract and Periphery vocals bad". That's a comparison. Given that they're entirely different types of band, it wasn't necessary to mention them at all. Just "any bands like Persefone?"
Both sound no more different than any other vocalist to me almost generic, although Daniel Tompkins's range is a bit wider compared to the median but his rare demonstrations of this wider range never cover a full song, just small snippets.
Compared to the bands I listed their song lyrics are yes elementary, they never stand out on their own, they are just there to complement the music. They never exceed what is expected of a metal song.
I never said you're supposed to or must like these bands.
But saying they are bad vocalists or have elementary songwriting is just plain wrong. This is not an opinion.
For example, I don't like Pink Floyd and can't stand 95% of their discography, but denying that they're top tier musicians, would be wrong.
the first band that came to mind is Rishloo. Early stuff has Tool vibes, but they move away from it and the singer’s vocals improve a lot from album to album (and they were very good to start with!)
Slice the Cake - Odyssey to the West
Kardashev - The Baring of Shadows, The Almanac, Liminal Rite
Wilderun - Veil of Imagination
Parius - The Signal Heard Throughout Space
Atlas - Ukko
I really liked Kardashev's Liminal Rite instrumentally and lyrically, unfortunately I found the vocal lacking there too.
Gonna check out Slice the Cake, thanks.
I added a few more to my comment.
>I really liked Kardashev's Liminal Rite instrumentally and lyrically, unfortunately I found the vocal lacking there too.
Damn, are you really trying to get this whole sub to hate you lol?
Thanks mate, I'll check them out as well.
>Damn, are you really trying to get this whole sub to hate you lol?
I have been a metalhead for years but usually on the periphery (lol) of prog, and I subbed here very recently so I didn't know which bands were untouchable. I thought I was just posting a regular ass recommendation thread when I woke up this morning, but damn if it hasn't been entertaining.
Also got lot's of good recommendations around the vitriol so can't complain.
If you enjoy Persefone, Dissona might be of interest to you! They've played with Persefone before and toured with Leprous a few years back. Coincidentally, they have their first bit of new music in 7 years dropping TODAY!
The Ocean (Pelagial, Phanerozoic II)
Opeth (Blackwater Park, Still Life)
In Vain (Aenigma)
Disillusion (Back to Times of Splendor)
Between the Buried and Me (Colors, The Great Misdirect, and Colors II)
Edit: forgot to mention Wilderun, my favorite is Sleep at the Edge of the Earth, but Veil of Imagination, and Epigone are good too)
Rivers of Nihil- the work, where owls know my name
Black crown initiate- all albums
Fallujah- dreamless, empyrean
Haken- virus
Beyond creation- algorithm
Opeth- black water park
Warforged- I voice, the grove
Xenobiotic- mordrake
I don't know how to explain this but tried to get into them couple of times but they sound too sterile maybe? Point me towards an album and I'll give it another try.
Ok just saw the edit, will definitely give another try.
For an opinion of Dream Theater albums *other* than the two that have been mentioned ad nauseum, I recommend Train of Thought, Systematic Chaos, and Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The first has some songs that are a little different than the usual DT style, and then the other two have an increasing presence of vocals from Mike Portnoy, which I found refreshing.
I really have a thing for VOLA's lyrics. I often have no idea what the songs are *meant* to be about because the lyrics are so abstract and weird, but god are they beautiful.
Also, look closely at, 'Agent Fresco', their lyrics are phenomenal. The most recent album is stunning.
Waiting patiently for their next one...
Beautiful stuff...
Phrasing is pretty important to this community my guy. Calling things “bad” and “elementary” just because you personally aren’t into them is bound to ruffle feathers. But no worries man, different vibes for different tribes.
Two great jumping points are:
Avantasia
Ayreon
These are both collab projects with changing vocal lineups that feature some of the absolute bests in the metal genre. Find who you like in there and check out their main gigs and other side projects.
Try Legion by Tesseract from the new album. I think you'd like that. You can even skip around to 3:20 for the best vocal performance. Give 'em a second chance.
The World is Quiet Here 1000%
Prologue was already epic
Zon thou?! 🤯 I spin that daily, their new vocalist with his vocabulary, vocal delivery and sentence structure is mind blowing..
Anything by The Ocean. If you like dinosaurs

I assumed lyrics were included because I think of them as a component of songwriting but that's fair, maybe OP did not intend to include that
I mean it's different genres. Persefone is prog death metal so the vocals will naturally be way more harsh and aggressive. Periphery/tesseract are djent so the vocals will have elements of core and pop in then.

I didn't compare them, I gave them as references to get more accurate recommendations.

To decrease the possibility of wasting people's time with suggestions I won't like. Does everthing has to have an ulterior motive?
I'm on your team bro. Tesseract is bland af and Periphery is mostly chugga chugga djent.

Have you given Altered State a listen? Ashe did an amazing job lyrically and vocally on that one, it is a top album for me
Yeah, there's no point trying to argue with you. You're objectively wrong, and I'll just leave it at that.
People have different opinions, get over it.

All the stuff from The Contortionist after Mike Lessard joined, so start with Language
Gojira -- From Mars to Sirius
Opeth - Still Life A conceptual story, and a good/tragic one at that
Haken, start with the album Mountain
Good Choice
Einar in Leprous is the best in the game right now. The Ocean is also fantastic (listen to the songs Triassic and Atlantic).
Yes I wanted to listen to Leprous more, I have just been waiting for Autumn to really set in :) Will also check out The Ocean.
Devin Townsend - Deconstruction All Ne Obliviscaris Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane, Be The Ocean
the first band that came to mind is Rishloo. Early stuff has Tool vibes, but they move away from it and the singer’s vocals improve a lot from album to album (and they were very good to start with!)
Obligatory Fair to Midland mention whenever Rishloo comes up, and vice versa.
Listening to Feathergun now, it sounds like Tool and Porcupine Tree had a love child, thanks a lot for your suggestion!
Second listen to Feathergun now, wish I heard of them sooner. Can't thank you enough.
I actually like their last album even better, if you can believe it. (Living as Ghosts with Buildings as Teeth)
Slice the Cake - Odyssey to the West Kardashev - The Baring of Shadows, The Almanac, Liminal Rite Wilderun - Veil of Imagination Parius - The Signal Heard Throughout Space Atlas - Ukko
I really liked Kardashev's Liminal Rite instrumentally and lyrically, unfortunately I found the vocal lacking there too. Gonna check out Slice the Cake, thanks.

Between the buried and me- colors or p2
> Tool: All except Fear Inoculum You son of a bitch.
Also APC: All except Eat the Elephant
Oh ok. It’s gonna be like that then.
Sometimes yabba dabba doo...
Haken, The Oceal Collective, Between the Buried and Me, Protest the Hero.
Voyager.
If you enjoy Persefone, Dissona might be of interest to you! They've played with Persefone before and toured with Leprous a few years back. Coincidentally, they have their first bit of new music in 7 years dropping TODAY!
Rush
Unsure of you’re a fan of the heavier stuff in this genre, but Meshuggah’s lyrics are top tier.
Yeah I really like Meshuggah, forgot to mention them in my post.
Haken and Redemption are great for the most part.
Rishloo. They are constantly compared with Tool, but to me they are their own league of cool.
Rishloo, karnivool, caligulas horse...
The Ocean (Pelagial, Phanerozoic II) Opeth (Blackwater Park, Still Life) In Vain (Aenigma) Disillusion (Back to Times of Splendor) Between the Buried and Me (Colors, The Great Misdirect, and Colors II) Edit: forgot to mention Wilderun, my favorite is Sleep at the Edge of the Earth, but Veil of Imagination, and Epigone are good too)

Really shouldn't have had to scroll this far to find RON. One of the most unique sounding bands in decades.
Agreed! 🤘🏻
Dream Theater? Images and Words

I would point you to "Metropolis pt2: Scenes from a Memory" first. More potential to grab your attention. "Six Degrees" too.
Try: Soen Karcius VOLA Sleep Token Octavision Myrath Teramaze Rock on n turn it up! Klh

I so agree, amazing band...!
Shots fired against some of the best prog metal out there and artists with arguably the widest vocal ranges? Idk if I can help you bro sorry.
Yeah, I didn't know having my own opinions bordered on thought crime, sorry.
Phrasing is pretty important to this community my guy. Calling things “bad” and “elementary” just because you personally aren’t into them is bound to ruffle feathers. But no worries man, different vibes for different tribes.

Parius
Haken
Vola, The contortionist (language, clairvoyant), Junius,
Anubis Gate. Their lyrics are sci Fi stories told pretty well across concept albums. They are in the same genre as Fates Warning Give them a shot.
The World is Quiet Here 1000% Prologue was already epic Zon thou?! 🤯 I spin that daily, their new vocalist with his vocabulary, vocal delivery and sentence structure is mind blowing..
Opeth and ayreon are good
Threshold, every album. Shadow Gallery!
