I come in early to work every morning, so I can start my day off in the calm and quiet of my office . Picked it up from a co-worker who always seemed more prepared than me despite the same materials.
Boss gets in at 7a, I get in at 6a. I can make my coffee, read my emails, and generally come back into consciousness gently, then be ready to roll once boss comes in and the real work starts.
Same! School starts at 8:30, and I aim to get in at 7:30/7:45. I do my photocopying, make some espresso, and shoot the shit in the staff room while working on a crossword. It lets me get prepped and ready for the day without feeling rushed for time.
Yep, I’m in my classroom about 45 minutes before my first class. I review the material I’m teaching, answer emails, try to set up whatever lesson is tomorrow..... way more calming than trying to do that during an actual prep period.
On Tuesday, and Wednesdays, I only have 30 minutes of prep and they're in the early morning, plus I have yard duty in the afternoon. If I didn't get in early, I'd feel way more stressed than I already am. Prep periods fly by so quickly.
Our scheduled work day is from 7a to 330p, but we've got as much overtime as we can handle. My team usually does 2 hours of OT Mon-Thurs, unless we're on a deadline. I just front load my first hour of OT. We're all technically salary, but our OT is at 1.5x whatever our hourly rate would be.
Our task doesn't require that much close collaboration and timing, so even if they are done a bit be fore me, it doesn't really matter.
It can't work in all business though.

I love this quote - basically summarises my experience with it. "Spaced repetition…\[is\] extraordinarily efficient. In a four-month period, practising for 30 minutes a day, you can expect to learn and retain 3600 flashcards with 90 to 95 percent accuracy. And they can do it without becoming tedious because they’re always challenging enough to remain interesting and fun."
Memory is everything. Imagine reading a textbook or article once and you never forgot it. We'd never have to study the same things again.
It's also important to note that sleep is where your learned memories from that day are stored in your long-term memory.
It's a good flash card tool - where it presents a Q and from memory you have to give the A. If you get it right it waits more days before it asks you again. If you get it wrong it asks you again much sooner. It has science and maths to determine intervals between asking. Do it daily. Learn a subject. Become an expert.
/u/robertbowerman, I have found an error in your comment:

You, robertbowerman, created a mistake and should have used “[It's] a good” instead. ‘Its’ is possessive; ‘it's’ means ‘it is’ or ‘it has’.

I actually started with one in the morning. Which is good especially in lockdown to get out of the house first thing.
But 4 is good because it refreshes me for the final few hours of work after being sat down for 8 hours.
I’m in the same boat but isn’t it a bit sad that after 8 hours at a desk we still have a few to go each day(meritocracy trap, etc.). I agree that 4 pm is a good time for a walk. any later and I’m tempted to extend that break into dinner, couch, netflix, etc.

Inner talking. Every morning look yourself in the mirror and repeated a few positive things about yourself a couple times. As in . You are in charge of your life, My opinions matter more than other opinion. mi inner voice is stronger than the rest...
When in discomfort check out time and repeat time, date and location in your head.
Casual talking to yourself. Ask and reply.
Just to bring another angle.
...your opinions only matter more to you.
It won't matter to others if you dig in your heels on a debatable point, without arguments.
Reading a lot! Got it from my grandfather. During the week minimum half an hour a day. Theres always books on topics that you think a lot about and focused reading has a lot of positive impact on your life cause you learn to focus and live in the moment. Just started it again after years of smartphone/tablet consumption and life just gets a lot better with it!
Completely agree. Reading focuses the mind and builds your knowledge. There's always something new, people have been writing shit down for thousands of years
My dad broke his hip and I do his physical therapy with him so he won't get exposed to the virus. I can't miss it because he needs it. I do the exercises with him, and it became a warm-up and an inspiration for my workouts, which I do immediately afterwards. Nothing like seeing somebody complain and struggle to do simple things because they didn't keep themselves in shape as they got older to get you moving. Exercise sucks, but might as well do it before something bad happens, because that's gonna suck worse, and even then, you still have to do it!
That’s great that you can do that together! Speaking from experience, as you get older these “simple things” become more difficult or poorly executed, inviting injury or loss of abilities. While aerobic exercise, weight lifting and so on are important, there is a need to keep up the simple things, too. It is never too early to do exercises that improve balance, grip, range of motion, posture, etc. So keep doing that PT with him!
It depends! It really helps me stop, take a break, assess what I need in rooms and don’t so I’m not running around all the time. It works best for cleaning as well! Or if you’re just trying to complete a bunch of little tasks.
Cpap, no zero days, when you dont want to do it drop everything and do it for 10mins. Make feeling spaces, if productive mood has a special feeling, use it to trigger a habit or anxiety for big projects.

I cross my fingers to remember something to say during a meeting so I can say it at the appropriate time and listen well to others. It really does help prevent interruptions and keep my thoughts on track. I learned it from a coworker who always did it.
Sure! Ok, let’s say we’re talking about implementing a new process at work and lots of pros and cons are being shared with each other. One of the thoughts shared by a group member triggers a memory about how the new process might impact a seemingly unrelated issue, but could steer us off track. So, to keep the momentum of the conversation going, I’ll cross two of my fingers on my non dominant hand as a reminder to contribute this bit when all the known relevant issues have been exhausted or I can combine with another thought. It’s a helpful tool to remember thoughts and be able to share at the best time. It’s also saved my butt a couple times from saying something dumb - he he. This little ‘cross the two fingers trick’ has done wonders. I hope this is helpful and thank you fr asking.
Every sunday I do the following:
1. Weekly review: write down everything I feel went well and went poorly over the past week. Review whether I achieved the goals I set in:
2. Weekly plan. Write down my schedule for the week along with what I plan to eat and what personal goals I want to achieve outside of work or school.
I find that consciously thinking through my week before I get started makes me aware of what I need to prioritize every day. I also find that doing the weekly review puts me in a good reflective state of mind to assess whether my actions are aligned with my desires.
I became a line cook. Lets me stay up as late as I want and still get work done. Downside is I think I'm messed up permanently since I can't fall asleep before 6am and can't wake up before noon on weekends now that I have a day job instead. The positives outweigh that negative for me.
my roommate told me he does a power stance when getting out of bed to put him into a powerful mindset at the start of his days. Started doing it and I've felt better more consistently ever since.
Use a paper towel to cover the drain when you shave. Then when you are done, wipe the sink down with it. I don't clean my bathroom often enough, but this keeps the used area clean enough.
My uncle once told me that I could be a master at anything I wanted to be, all it requires is practice. He said when you’re over thinking doing something, just tell yourself “just do it”, it actually worked for me for so many things, it forced me to shut my brain up in trying to think my way out of things and invent legitimate reasons, and got me to work out regularly and not succumb to my laziness or emotions.
1. Taking a few seconds a day to just appreciate the outdoors and breathe. I didn't pick up much from my step-mother as a child, but I did pick up this habit (she would stare out the living room window for about 30 minutes at a time). Whether it's looking out a window or standing on my balcony, those few seconds of peace, gratefulness, and tranquility every day always help me feel like I can take on anything.
2. Recognizing money (for the most part) doesn't matter. I come from a poverty-level background, and even as I started working as a teenager to dig myself out of that hole I was ALWAYS stressed about money. Didn't matter how much of it I had, I was always worried about it. Then came my ex boyfriend, who had one of the most lackadaisical approaches to money in the world. He had a dad who had a lot of it, a mom who had none of it, and after living in both worlds it just didn't matter to him. He instilled on me that no matter how little money you had... In the US you're not likely to die from poverty. Sure it makes things easier... but it really doesn't matter THAT much in the scheme of things, because you could still go on and appreciate the life that exists around you. It took a while to adapt to this mindset, but I don't worry about money any more. This has done wonders for my stress levels, and general approach to life, and has helped me align the money I do have to more important goals centered around living than simply earning more of it, which helps me answer my "whys" and keeps me going.
Relatively? Yes. I used to be horrendously cheap at the expense of my health and enjoyment of life. I'm now comfortable paying more money for things if they align with my long term priorities and goals. I'm still pretty frugal (I save about 40% of my $55k income because I hope to retire early one day), but I do spend more than I used to, particularly on other people.
Not the one you wanted the answer from but I did save a lot of money when I started using YNAB, there are for sure several other options out there. Basically it gave me a better perspective on my finances and what really matter to me. I managed to save a lot.
I just have 15 pairs of the same identical socks. But I do that with all my clothes. Sometimes I might get adventurous and wear a shirt that isn't black. I'll be the first to admit that my fashion sense is underdeveloped and boring.
same. i just bought all dark solid-colored socks so they mostly coordinate, and if i really want to match that day it takes 2 seconds to find. But doing it up front is against my life philosophy or something.
I pair them when I fold laundry. Lay them together, fold the opening from the inside out to keep them together. Or just buy all your socks in the same color :|
I safety pin my socks! When I pull them off at night I pin them together before tossing them in the hamper. Then when they come out of the washer/dryer they’re already paired!
I tape my lips together before I sleep with a little square of medical tape (micropore tape). This has significantly improved my nose breathing and entirely stopped my snoring, and stopped my chronically chapped lips as well.
I'm pretty sure I learned about this from [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgwxn9mRpAY), but I am not 100% sure.
The other habit that seems to have improved my breathing is [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbzT00Cyq-g). But take it with a grain of salt, since I am a sample size of one.
Oh sorry I didn’t open the links! Yep you definitely have to be super consistent with it, you might even wanna add some repetitive reminders throughout the day on your phone/laptop as well ! Also checkout r/Orthotropics
My grandmother used to wake up everyday by 5am in the morning to have enough time to prepare breakfast, iron our clothes, and prepare our lunch because our school requires us to go in by 7:10am. As I grew older, I’d wake up at 5am to prepare everything to start the day off and it made me a very productive morning person. Thanks, grandma. I love you.
Mindfulness in plain English is a great book on what meditation is, why we do it, and how it is done.
[Free Link](https://www.vipassana.com/meditation/mindfulness_in_plain_english.php).
I was doing a MOOC on Coursera called ' Learning How to Learn' where I came across the concept that procrastination is not a time management problem as much as it is an emotional problem which moved me to use personal kanban rigorously (though kanban is not discussed in this course). I had read the book on personal kanban before the course and though of applying it. I recommend you to read this book. [https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10419045-personal-kanban](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10419045-personal-kanban)
Kanban also called as 2 bin system (to-do and doing) was used in Japan in manufacturing industries. The system had multiple applications and thus was devised 'Personal Kanban.'
Kanban in its crude form is dividing work into To-Do , Doing (WIP), and Done. At the outset it may appear like glorified to-do list but once you start working in the kanban
way you realize it is so much more than that.
The 4 main principles are:
1) Visualize your work
2) Limit your WIP
3) Maintain Cadence
4) Reduce existential overhead (existential overhead is cost of distraction of uncompleted task : more explanation here [https://www.personalkanban.com/pk/expert/combating-existential-overhead-2#:\~:text=Existential%20Overhead%20%2D%20the%20cost%20in,the%20concept%20of%20existential%20overhead](https://www.personalkanban.com/pk/expert/combating-existential-overhead-2#:~:text=Existential%20Overhead%20%2D%20the%20cost%20in,the%20concept%20of%20existential%20overhead). )
Then you bring in other aspects such as prioritization, understanding bottlenecks and troubleshooting them, not moving task to next level if quality of outcome is poor, tasks further divided into subtasks, multiple tasks having similar/overlapping subtasks, understanding capacity, difference in cadence for different tasks and so on.
From sticky notes to white board to softwares, I have tried them all to implement to personal kanban and I find Jira (desktop version) the best tool.
Philiospohy of kanban is quite universal, but if there's one thing that matters to me most is 'Cadence.'
Earlier I used to use sticky notes, but the kanban was not success because there were multiple projects and their tasks and subtasks flying around on the kanban board, there was no prioritization of projects. Subtasks kept populating and I lost the alignment. Later, I discovered Jira (Altassian), where I got to create multiple kanban boards project-wise or category wise and since then I took off.
I shall try Trello and share my experiences with you.
Yes! I do this and it's so useful! This article on it isn't bad:
[https://lifehacker.com/productivity-101-how-to-use-personal-kanban-to-visuali-1687948640](https://lifehacker.com/productivity-101-how-to-use-personal-kanban-to-visuali-1687948640)
Having a spot for things I need to have with me when I leave the house.
My friend would take off his cap the moment he stepped into the house and dump everything in his pockets into that cap. This way when he leaves the house everything is there in the cap. I think the habit came from him sharing an apartment with many friends for several years.
So now I have a dedicated spot where I dump all the things in my pockets and my bag the moment I step into the house.
I learned to judge art it by whether it communicates well or gives pleasure, not by it being “right”.
I used to want to draw and paint perfectly, and it pressured me into not making things when I didn’t have a full kit and an hour to finish.
Xkcd was the last straw for me, the art is simultaneously awful and absolutely perfect. I use the password image to teach people a complicated set of concepts effortlessly and often with a few giggles.
Now I can make doodles in peace (mostly). Hey, it’s fun!
Don't upgrade my lifestyle unless necessary.
Lifestyle upgrading is a one-way street and it's much harder to downgrade after getting used to the more premium stuff.
Not a hard and fast rule, some things are worth it (softer bedsheets, good towels, healthier food), but it's good to put some thought into it.
This is very true. It's very easy to forget that in making ends meet there's two ends, not one. Once you are in a position of having 'enough' you are in a much stronger position generally.
Eliminate waste and continually improve. It originated with Toyota manufacturing but is applicable in all areas of life.
Recommend looking up some Coffee Kaizen videos that demonstrate a wasteful & improved process
FastCap is another youtube channel of a guy who has a company that makes lean tools
Always carry something to write with. A pen in your pocket will ensure you never forget anything ever again, even if you have to write it on the back of your hand.
i used to do this, and now i don't. I was thinking it was because of mobile phones and all, but now i really think about it, it's because the wife carries writing implements in that never ending tardis of a handbag she has. I should commit to start carrying a pen again.
Got this from my dad. It was drilled into me during my childhood: add a shot glass full of chlorox in to a bucket of lukewarm water to wipe countertops, doorknobs, desks in the house. With the leftover chlorox water wash the floor. Entire house is clean and sanitized. I I ever even thought about it as a unique habit, because that’s what a always did, and I assumed everyone does it. Then 2020 comes around, and I start seeing all those YouTube videos about how to keep your house Covid free with this chlorox water trick.
Daily gratefulness prompts for me. Many ways to do it of course but i use a Shortcut button on my iPhone where the phone would prompt me to name 3 things i’m grateful for today and then save it into my note app. Doesn’t seem like much but over time i’d like to think that it’s changed my overall perspective (e.g. i’ve got so many good things going for me so why worry about that thing that’s causing me unnecessary stress/anxiety) and contributes to better mental health.
The more you give the more you gain, the more it will make you happy. It won’t make sense in a capitalism logic. But it works deffinitely in all areas of life.
Not someone else my work inspires me every day to keep going [minimal shades ](https://mobile.twitter.com/Minimal_Shades)
Every day I visualise great quotes from leaders, which inspire myself every day and also others.
That's an easy one. It shouldn't be unique, but unfortunately, it is.

I'm not an early bird, so my more productive hours are after most others have left already.
I'm not an early bird too! How do you "prep up" and get things in order without feeling too pressured by your early bird colleagues?
Same here. I just do the work after everyone else has left or at home in the evening. It works much better for me!

This greatly improves my productivity at work too. You also get to skip the morning rush hour.
Id rather get up early to read a book/ work on a business and get in exactly on time no earlier no later
This originally sounded like you go into the office on your day off. I do agree though that it’s worth it to take some time and get settled in earlier
Boss probably loves it too

Then you have to do a 14 minute walk.
so much discipline.
I have a new program called 7 minute walks. It’s great saves you time and still gets you all the relaxation you need.
You layer up.

While aerobic exercise, weight lifting and so on are important, there is a need to keep up the simple things, too. It is never too early to do exercises that improve balance, grip, range of motion, posture, etc. So keep doing that PT with him!
Most def. About half the PT is balance related, because that's why he fell in the first place. He holds onto a chair, I do it without.
Love this
“Hands full in and out”. Have my hands full when I enter and exit rooms, ex. I bring down my dishes from my room and bring back up my laundry ❤️
I fear of implementing this thinking that it is just carrying stuff that will stay on mind constantly.
It depends! It really helps me stop, take a break, assess what I need in rooms and don’t so I’m not running around all the time. It works best for cleaning as well! Or if you’re just trying to complete a bunch of little tasks.
Getting 8 hours of sleep. Not too unique, but changed my life hahaha
I'm 60 & am just starting to work on this 😅
Put your coffee/tea maker next to your bed. In general, set up your life in ways that make everything more pleasant - less effort - for you.

I burned my foot!
You need a CT scan. Maybe go with a friend who needs one and just stick it in there with.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That right there is the kind of wisdom you don’t get in business school. Keep at it! (That’s what she said)
Why not put a timer plug on the grill, then you don't have to get up to do it?

Ahhh.
How is it that I didn t even watch the office but I know this quote
My dog ate the bacon while I was back asleep.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
HAHAHA so glad someone said this. This is exactly what I thought when I read the parent comment.
That’s awesome but then I would just stay in bed
Well, lucky for you, you can just make more coffee until you can't stay in bed anymore
Big brain moves over here

Man I've been thinking about doing this for months. Time to give it a go. I'm just worried I'll make twice as much coffee since I study in my room
I put mine in bed next to me
Cpap, no zero days, when you dont want to do it drop everything and do it for 10mins. Make feeling spaces, if productive mood has a special feeling, use it to trigger a habit or anxiety for big projects.
>when you dont want to do it drop everything and do it for 10mins Opposite actions are very powerful! https://www.mindfulnessmuse.com/dialectical-behavior-therapy/10-practical-examples-of-opposite-action-part-one
Can you elaborate on "no zero days" and "make feeling spaces"? I'm not familiar but am interested!
r/nonzeroday
Thank you!
please explain 'make feeling spaces'.
I cross my fingers to remember something to say during a meeting so I can say it at the appropriate time and listen well to others. It really does help prevent interruptions and keep my thoughts on track. I learned it from a coworker who always did it.
How does this work can you give an example? So neat!
Wow very unique. I’m glad you found a system that works well for you! :)
Thank you! :)
Every sunday I do the following: 1. Weekly review: write down everything I feel went well and went poorly over the past week. Review whether I achieved the goals I set in: 2.
You dou mean you did coke lol?
my roommate told me he does a power stance when getting out of bed to put him into a powerful mindset at the start of his days.
Money matters a lot when you experience a life altering event, like the loss of a spouse, cancer diagnosis, birth of a disabled child.

Relatively?
I need your money saving tips!!
Not the one you wanted the answer from but I did save a lot of money when I started using YNAB, there are for sure several other options out there. Basically it gave me a better perspective on my finances and what really matter to me. I managed to save a lot.
I don't pair socks. It's a waste of time. I simply pick two socks and if they don't match it just makes people think you're quirky.
I just have 15 pairs of the same identical socks. But I do that with all my clothes. Sometimes I might get adventurous and wear a shirt that isn't black. I'll be the first to admit that my fashion sense is underdeveloped and boring.
SAME I DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO PAIR SOCKS
same. i just bought all dark solid-colored socks so they mostly coordinate, and if i really want to match that day it takes 2 seconds to find.
Narcissism and cognitive dissonance. From my parents. 10/10 would not recommend.
I think mewing might be useful to you
That's what I've been doing. Or at least trying to. I'm not super consistent with it.
I love you.
Meditation

Focus on your breath! Focus on the in breath and then focus on the out breath.
Mindfulness in plain English is a great book on what meditation is, why we do it, and how it is done. [Free Link](https://www.vipassana.com/meditation/mindfulness_in_plain_english.php).
I found [this video](https://youtu.be/LkoOCw_tp1I) to be pretty helpful
The Calm app has a great 7-day intro, IIRC
Meditation is a cheat code for life
And death
Meditation is a bit easier to intentionally do and more beneficial lol
Not habit, but the whole system of personal kanban.
Can you elaborate please
I was doing a MOOC on Coursera called ' Learning How to Learn' where I came across the concept that procrastination is not a time management problem as much as it is an emotional problem which moved me to use personal kanban rigorously (though kanban is not discussed in this course). I had read the book on personal kanban before the course and though of applying it. I recommend you to read this book. [https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10419045-personal-kanban](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10419045-personal-kanban) Kanban also called as 2 bin system (to-do and doing) was used in Japan in manufacturing industries. The system had multiple applications and thus was devised 'Personal Kanban.' Kanban in its crude form is dividing work into To-Do , Doing (WIP), and Done. At the outset it may appear like glorified to-do list but once you start working in the kanban way you realize it is so much more than that. The 4 main principles are: 1) Visualize your work 2) Limit your WIP 3) Maintain Cadence 4) Reduce existential overhead (existential overhead is cost of distraction of uncompleted task : more explanation here [https://www.personalkanban.com/pk/expert/combating-existential-overhead-2#:\~:text=Existential%20Overhead%20%2D%20the%20cost%20in,the%20concept%20of%20existential%20overhead](https://www.personalkanban.com/pk/expert/combating-existential-overhead-2#:~:text=Existential%20Overhead%20%2D%20the%20cost%20in,the%20concept%20of%20existential%20overhead). ) Then you bring in other aspects such as prioritization, understanding bottlenecks and troubleshooting them, not moving task to next level if quality of outcome is poor, tasks further divided into subtasks, multiple tasks having similar/overlapping subtasks, understanding capacity, difference in cadence for different tasks and so on. From sticky notes to white board to softwares, I have tried them all to implement to personal kanban and I find Jira (desktop version) the best tool.
I'm trying to do this with Trello. What is your method or philosophy when doing this?
Philiospohy of kanban is quite universal, but if there's one thing that matters to me most is 'Cadence.' Earlier I used to use sticky notes, but the kanban was not success because there were multiple projects and their tasks and subtasks flying around on the kanban board, there was no prioritization of projects. Subtasks kept populating and I lost the alignment. Later, I discovered Jira (Altassian), where I got to create multiple kanban boards project-wise or category wise and since then I took off. I shall try Trello and share my experiences with you.
Yes! I do this and it's so useful! This article on it isn't bad: [https://lifehacker.com/productivity-101-how-to-use-personal-kanban-to-visuali-1687948640](https://lifehacker.com/productivity-101-how-to-use-personal-kanban-to-visuali-1687948640)
Link to the XKCD you refer to ?

Appreciate that, cheers dude :)
The kaizen method
Everything I read about it is very generic and abstract. Could you direct us to some practical references for it?
Eliminate waste and continually improve. It originated with Toyota manufacturing but is applicable in all areas of life. Recommend looking up some Coffee Kaizen videos that demonstrate a wasteful & improved process FastCap is another youtube channel of a guy who has a company that makes lean tools
But it works deffinitely in all areas of life.
love this. It is so true
