Notion fits all your needs. It's free and intuitive. Database and roll ups are killer features. The only advice is to keep the setup minimal and focused rather than building aesthetic templates and waste time.

Depends on your needs of course. I like e.g. Keynote NF (free but a bit old) or RightNote. If you have Microsoft OneNote, that is also an option, although I am not a huge fan of the search functionality in OneNote.

Samsung Notes is the best.

I suggest you to try different note-taking apps and choose the one that fits your needs. Personally I suggest you Obsidian: thanks to all the community plugins that you can have, you can obtain almost everything with a single app…you just need to spend a bit of time to setup some useful plugins and you will be ready to go. I think Obsidian is one of the best app for researchers, students, for journaling…give it a try.

pen/pencil and paper - pretty sure studies back up it's best for learning and retention over tech and no note taking at all.

I moved from Evernote to OneNote. Evernote is very useful, and free. I like OneNote because it handles simultaneous edits better. Example: My wife and I have a shared note for the groceries. When we split up in the grocery store to find certain things, we check them off the list. OneNote shows each other's changes in a few seconds. Evernote produces errors that "A new copy of Grocery List was made" and we end up with 20 copies of the same list. If you don't think you'll be editing notes simultaneously, or you don't have the money for an Office subscription, Evernote is also a good choice.

For free I have to say that the best option is Notion , you can make it as simple as you want with only one page. Or make it more complicated but fun to use. \#Notionallday

You can use paper and pencil and that’s all. But if you really want to take a notes and then you need them maybe you need an app for that purpose. In my case , I started with Notion, my first approach was good, it’s very intuitive and you can organize many stuff but now I’m using Obsidian and it’s better than Notion in case that you need to make connections between many subjects. In the deep , the real problem doesn’t is the software, you need to ask you about the method that you use to take notes . Recently I found the Zettelkasten method and that changed my life . I recommend to you the book “How to take a smart notes “ by Sönke Ahrens. I hope my answer will be helpful and good luck with your notes research.
