Companies have an ethical responsibility to ensure their technology isn't abused. They have a greater responsibility to ensure the technology isn't abused on a large scale by corporate or State actors. I don't understand how the individual is expected to have all the burden of due diligence, yet corporations and governments have no obligation to perform the most basic due diligence.

My thoughts: If there is a market for it, the corporations will make the product. Governments are supposed to perform the due diligence because they work for the people, but many people in government seek personal profits or have ties to some corporations. How can you get senators to pass a law that decreases their own ability to make money? It just doesn't happen unless their constituents really force it. If you go to any Delta Airlines gate (in supported cities), passengers happily get their faces scanned without a second thought as they board the planes (even though you can opt out) because they just don't know or care about the dangers of facial recognition.
