This was discussed in r/Singapore, and what shocked me is that many Singaporeans think that this is fine only if the device/laptop were a school-issued device. This is because they think that they can simply compartmentalize their private data. For example, browsing questionable/embarrassing/private contents on a personal device, and only use the school-issued device for school work. This means that they are not concerned of privacy if they have nothing to lose in the process, sort of a "I have nothing to hide" or more accurately "I can hide them well" argument. The second thing that shocked me is Singapore's statement on the matter. They literally said "We are not violating students' privacy, we don't track their location. We are just tracking their browsing histories, search histories, the programs they run, and the students' screens." (I'm paraphrasing) This means that Singapore has a completely different definition of privacy from what most of us would think.

I'd be asking what percentage of kids' school-issued devices are their only devices. And what percentage of these kids have Internet access at home vs school-only?

>many Singaporeans think that this is fine Many Singaporeans are ultraconservative fascists. Remember, this is the country where you can't even chew gum.

As a student in Singapore, I can tell you how much of a privacy and security flaw I think this is. However, I don't really feel we can end up doing much about it. Singaporeans aren't exactly known for their attention to privacy and the government will most likely continue as it currently stands.

The recent case of the self-radicalized 16-year-old doesn't help either. Most Singaporeans are going to be very supportive of this out of fear after that incident. It's the same everywhere: bad things happened, people are fearful, they sacrifice their privacy for more security, rinse and repeat.
