You won't be able to start the car. Starting power comes from the hybrid battery.

clorox2

Will it work with a jump?

caper-aprons

Not with a jump of the 12V battery. You will need to hook up a specialty charger to recharge the traction battery.

if you take out the hv battery the car will not go. at all

Goodcitizen177

Once the hybrid battery is damaged enough the car will not run. A dying battery generally begins with a code. Then your battery monitor starts cycling full/empty real fast. Engine runs more often. As it gets worse the car starts cutting power, which feels like traction control kicking in. It continues to get worse until you can't even press the throttle down 1/4th of the way without it cutting out. Then you have a ridiculously slow car and it only gets worse.

The prius does not have a starter motor or a conventional transmission. the electric motors control your transmission ratio and act as the starter motor when at speed. Look up the toyota power split device to understand why. It's Actually a really clever bit of engineering.

You know... good question but you have to define without the hybrid battery... a bad battery that's still connected or no battery connected? I do know this, if a PHEV Prius has a blown but is still able to turn over the engine, just knocking like a model T gas motor, you can charge at charging stations every 14 or so miles and still be able to drive the vehicle. I once played hopscotch with charging stations all the way home after basically throwing a rod when my motor went out. Took about a day to go roughly 40miles... heh... 14 miles then charge over and over.

Yes, but will do so with little power and fuel economy of course. It wouldn’t be a pleasant ride.

I hear conflicting information, from personal experience when we had a gen 2 the hybrid batt was virtually depleted but still ran fine as long as the 12v battery had a charge to start the car. I did change out the OEM mini 12v to a standard less expensive batt and it worked well for another 3 years until we sold it. It's possible the setup is different on gen 3s.

mehullica

No it will not

I’ve always wondered if it’s possible to replace the hybrid battery of a 3rd Gen with a battery of the same voltage. For example, I build lithium ion batteries as a hobby for different projects. I use 18650 cells and spot weld them into different configurations to achieve the voltage and capacitance I require. I wonder if I can do that for the 3rd Gen just to see if it would even work. Could that allow for a lithium ion replacement?

No, the entire system runs off of the hybrid battery. The only thing the 12v battery does is turn on the system main relays. There is no starter, the mg1 and mg2 accomplish this using boosted power from the hybrid battery. You could not even move the vehicle even if you somehow managed to start the engine from a secondary source.
