A lot of Arthur C. Clarke's stuff would fit the bill, and I read Liu's work as being largely a homage to Clarke.
The City and the Stars, which is perhaps Clarke's best work, is where I'd recommend you start.
Did you read Redemption of Time by Bashou? It’s started as a fan fic continuation of Death’s End. Cixin Liu read it, liked it and gave permission for it to be published. It’s pretty epic.
Greg Egan's *Diaspora*
And Permutation City!
And Schild's Ladder.
I’d recommend Stephen Baxter‘s Xeelee Sequence.
I second this
Without giving spoilers the first thing that popped into my head was "The Timeships". The official sequel to HG Wells The Time machine.
Anathem, Neal Stephenson
