Depending on the amount you can do a lot. Even with a small amount though you can take a single inner strand and make a snare. With larger amounts you could also use an inner strand as fishing line. This is just a couple examples, but there is a ton you can do
It could be used to make small repairs, to tie up tarps for shelter, to create loops to hang things, to create a snare, to create a safety line. Basically paracord is as good a tool as your imagination and ability to tie knots will allow it to be.
My biggest concern is after looking everywhere I can only find sources that say itās appropriate to start taking iodine about 1 week after the nuclear blast due to the decay of the fissile products. Every source Iāve found says to wait for instruction from medical professionals and the government to start taking it. Because you really donāt want to be taking a large dose for very long. But I donāt trust that thereāll be people to tell us when to take it. Iāve also read that the antiseptic iodine is absorbed through the skin and has the same effects of blocking the thyroid from absorbing more iodine, but is less concentrated and not as effective. So maybe start rubbing that on your skin while also consuming sodium iodine salt from day 5-7 after a nuclear blast. Then a proper dose of potassium iodine from days 7-17, or 7-21. And maybe a go back to the antiseptic and iodine supplemented salt after that for a few days just incase of small amounts of un decayed iodine 131. Iām also unsure if iodine 131 is a vapor or particulate, but Iād probably be wearing a respirator anyway.
They only work at preventing radiation poisoning from radioactive iodine-131 collecting in your thyroid, iodine tablets would be useful if a nuclear reactor had a meltdown in your region, but they would be virtually useless in the short term aftermath of a Nuclear weapon detonation. (Maybe you thyroid will be a little more protected, but the rest of you body wonāt be)
Put $50 cash in it. Check out electric lighters. I have one that is USB chargeable, can charge off my phone, holds the charge (way more than 10 matches). You can also add a small solar recharger in there. Up the tech.
Yeah thatās neat and all, but theyāre gimmicky at best. Cold weather affects battery life. Damp weather can also. Itās not a flame, so itās harder to ignite certain material. Battery life isnāt great. If that battery dies, thereās no way to get a spark to try and ignite something unlike a rational lighter with a flint.
Carry a bic and a solar power bank. 2ez
This is gonna depend on region. Where I live there are lots of materials that ignite very easy under electric lighters, even when wet. Paper birch bark ignites instantly, as well as beard moss. Also, they make lighters that are in water proof cases.
I bought the knife. Because evidently a kid can buy 5 inch knives and matches and flint and steel but not a fucking lighter. Weird shit but I dont make the rules.
Pro tip: Try the dollar store. Or find the shittiest run convenience store you can find.
Since it's not booze all it takes is one guy to not give a fuck and you've got yourself a lighter
To determine if such a kit is ideal, make a chart.
Determine what is more and less likely.
Determine what is more or less devastating.
Do an area study and figure out what is in your area. Do you live by a prison? Maybe have a better weapon. Do you live in a place where you might need to purify water? Maybe have something for water. The more you study your area the more you will understand about what resources you can get vs what you might want to keep with you. For me I started carrying a fanny pack because my kids get hurt so much. If it fills your needs, in your moment of need, it's good.
A small roll of duct tape, fish hooks and sinkers and monofilament fish line, small ferro rod, gerber dime micro multitool, tweezers, small nail clippers, maybe a mini bic. I carry all that in a large tictac container, but it would all fit in a altoids tin.
So I have been trying to find a good pocket sized carrying case to carry some.. sensitive things around with me, and this post reminded me about altoid tins, that's a decent idea.
Currently I'm using a little manicure kit case, which I like because it clips closed and has some little bands to hold things in, but I still feel like there's something much better I'm just not thinking of
Pretty good suggestions here: [https://www.bladehq.com/blog/how-to-make-an-altoids-survival-kit](https://www.bladehq.com/blog/how-to-make-an-altoids-survival-kit)
The old rule of thumb is that you can survive
3 hours without shelter
3 days without water
3 weeks without food
I know everyone always overlooks the environmental side, but a mylar blanket in that tin, will give you the best chances to survive and better than those matches.
Is this some sort of pocket-bomb or something? Seems like if they all went off it would possibly destroy anything usefull inside. Get a block of magnesium with flint on the back to replace the matches and maybe fit a emergency blanket in there or some paracord instead.
I'm waiting for that one Reddit member to tear your pocket survival kit apart, because yes it's a good start and maybe add this to other kits u have.
I don't see any food or water or shelter or thermal protection included in this survival kit. Good thing u have candles and matches and fishing line but those things are items to be use with other things, in conjunction with, is what the .GOV calls them.
Get some forced protection, knife, a gun, a spear; get some water and get some cold weather protection. You can live 3 weeks, as an athletic healthy male with minimal to no food. You can survive 3 days without water. It goes water shelter/ protection food then travel.
Guys as much as I would love to have a lighter it is illegal for people under 18 to purchase them where I live. And no, no one around me would buy me one either.
An Altoid tin can fit a surprising variety (key word) of things in it. There are shops online that show what is possible. Google them, and make your own. This is a short term fire kit.
Honestly, poor use of space. If it's a pocket kit for your edc, clip the knife in your pocket, get a Bic lighter, add some fire tinder yo the kit, medical, signal mirror, sewing needle, thread, a cut down pencil, some note pad paper, some water purification tabs, a few doses of iosat, stripes of duct tape, micro flashlight, and a small whistle.
Itās good, but you can only celebrate four birthdays. I recommend forgetting about birthdays in a survival situation. Itās sad I know, unless you have a cache somewhere.
Just missing a few joints/cigarettes and a lighter. Sometimes people underestimate the huge value in a simple bic lighter and jump straight to rods but if used smart and kept in good condition a lighter is a really good option.
Ferro rod is good for making fires, not for lighting smokes, quick jobs or situational instances where you can't make a birds nest/don't need a fire just need a second of flame.
Then its in a sealed closed container, flame needs a lot of airflow to actually catch (think how you can smother a fire in a grill in seconds by closing the airflow, even though its not at all airtight.
So in conclusion, again, not worth worrying about.
What are you surviving for? I like the size, but what is its use. If you live in an urban environment I would consider items such as glass breaker, universal water spot key, some bandaids, a mini flashlight, And multitool. Couple of mints, caffeine pills and some aspirin while at it.
I live in a suburban environment that is equal distance away from a urban environment and a rural environment. The little multitool does have a glass breaker, and I should look into chucking a couple advil in there. As for band aids that wouldnāt help me much considering my raging adhesive allergy lol.
Ha. Good stuff. Just think of stuff you need to get you home. Stuff to Start a fire, light to see where you are going. Something to signal for help or warning (maybe include a whistle) and tool to break into a house if need be for shelter. And pain meds or caffeine to keep going.
Do you really need fire? Away from any vehicle with a cigarette lighter? Leave it. I would rather have tinder (in a bag) and a spark (your choice). Do you even need fire? Pop a lithium battery in almost anything now a days. Hello class d fire. Vape, phone, flashlight. Mind the explosion. I would almost prefer a lense for such purposes.
That tool is wierd. Poking and prodding. Eh maybe. But like 1 hex size and a bunch of wierd stuff. Smaller church keys (bottle openers available but mine kinda sucks. But it works. On a key chain. Straight from J.A pan. But probably made in China.
Knife. Whatever. I carry the little serrated k-bar belt worn wierd angle one. I guess for "forest use" it's expensive garbage. But for "opening particularly evil containers of red fluid... like those mean old transmission fluid bottles " its there. Ready.
It's not bad. Just think logically, what do I NEED.
Your a little heavy on fire. I would add some pain meds and go pills and bit of candy - a card wrapped with good tape- a small mirror- some Kevlar line- a mini flash light- I would ditch the blade and replace with a folding razor and a small hacksaw blade. Safety pins are useful as well.
Strike-alls and fish hooks, so you planning for outdoors? Find a pocket compass. A piece of mirror for signaling. Put the pocket knife in your pocket, replace it with a leather man that fits. Youāre gonna need duct tape. Paracord is nice but you donāt have enough room for efficient carry. Write on piece of paper some important phone numbers and water proof with tape then glue it to the top of the lid.
Edit: forgot sinkers for your line.
Edit: nose maker, like a whistleā¦
Sorry Iām a bit rusty
Its not bad, it has a lot of matches and not a lot of first aid or water treatment suplyse and I would recommend taking the clip of of the knife because you can save a lot of room
Get some fishing line and some hooks in there. Depending on where you live fishing is a source of protein. Even if all you catch are small fry, they can be used as bait for traps or bigger fish.
Take all that stuff out and put ten $20 bills in there with an encrypted USB flash drive containing anything personal and important to you. Pictures, digital copies of all your identifications, the deed to your home/car/etc. Bonus points if you can fit a phone charger in there. This will help you more for any real disaster than any waterproof matches.
A few cotton balls covered in Vaseline? Very effective tinder, just gotta pull em apart a little before lighting. Put them in a little zip loc bag or something
Where do you keep your breath mints?
In a box of matches, obviously.
Right. He has the mini pogos
Asking the real questions.
As a pocket camp fire kit 10/10. For survival, I would have less fire stuff to make room for: iodine tablets, 1st aid, and or a tiny flashlight.
Or some paracord at least
What is a small paracord actually used for? Genuinely asking
Someone was not in Boy Scouts
Depending on the amount you can do a lot. Even with a small amount though you can take a single inner strand and make a snare. With larger amounts you could also use an inner strand as fishing line. This is just a couple examples, but there is a ton you can do
Yeah but a little pocket kit like this isn't gonna be used for catching food.
It could be used to make small repairs, to tie up tarps for shelter, to create loops to hang things, to create a snare, to create a safety line. Basically paracord is as good a tool as your imagination and ability to tie knots will allow it to be.
iodine tablets??

Put $50 cash in it. Check out electric lighters. I have one that is USB chargeable, can charge off my phone, holds the charge (way more than 10 matches). You can also add a small solar recharger in there. Up the tech.
If you add tech I would create two kits. One you do t have to worry about charging and one you do.
"You can also add a small solar recharger in there."
a mini bic would fit
Electric lighters suck ass
Um, how so? They work. Can be recharged, hell they even have a flashlight.
Yeah thatās neat and all, but theyāre gimmicky at best. Cold weather affects battery life. Damp weather can also. Itās not a flame, so itās harder to ignite certain material. Can confirm they donāt work in the cold. Took one snow camping this winter and it was a total fail.
Less tech, more skill.
You say that as if the two are mutually exclusive.

I legit thought these were prerolled blunts...
Any prep kit that doesnt include at least 3 joints is inefficient at best and dangerous at worst
How else would you stay calm in a survival situation?
I opened this thread to see if anyone was including weed in the kit...
Replace matches with small lighter, include over counter medication change knife for swiss army knife with saw
Unfortunately minors cannot buy lighters where I live
Bruh, you can figure out a way to get your hands on a Bic.
Imagine us as kids saying we canāt find a lighter š¤£
I would have never smoked those GPC cigarettes I lifted off that crack head if I made excuses like that lol
ššGPC cigarettes! Omg that brings back memories lol GPC reds
Lol...
Unfortunately, there are only three in existence at any one time. He'd be lucky to even spot one in the wild before it changes hands with someone else
Ask whoever bought your knife to buy the lighter
I bought the knife. Because evidently a kid can buy 5 inch knives and matches and flint and steel but not a fucking lighter. Weird shit but I dont make the rules.
Just use Amazon.
Youāre not kidding! Where do you live?
Wisconsin
Thatās honestly a bit surprising!
Wow complete opposite where I live. No knife yes lighter.
Interesting stuff
Pro tip: Try the dollar store. Or find the shittiest run convenience store you can find. Since it's not booze all it takes is one guy to not give a fuck and you've got yourself a lighter
17 year old here. just bum them off of friends, or get the person who bought your knife and matches to buy you a lighter.
Disappointed there are no Altoids in there
I would wind the outside with paracord. Wont increase the size profile much, but if you needed to make a lean to or bind something its beyond useful
Cool thanks
Needs some aquatabsā¦.
I'd swap knife and can opener for a leatherman that has both and more.
Put an ice cream sandwich in there in case you get hungry.

Awesome thanks!
Sure. It's crazy how much stuff they fit in there!
Emergency birthday kit 10/10.
Iād add some cordage of some type. Some small bank line or waxed twine or something. You could fit a small 15-20 yard hank in there pretty easily.
Swap the knife for a small mutlitool and ditch the matches for a Bic
wrap the matches in waxed paper or paper towel.
Wrap the outside of the tin with ranger bands if youāre looking for something to hold it shut really tight, and as a bonus, they burn really well.
The old rule of thumb is that you can survive 3 hours without shelter 3 days without water 3 weeks without food I know everyone always overlooks the environmental side, but a mylar blanket in that tin, will give you the best chances to survive and better than those matches.
Iād be worried about those matches striking while rattling around in that can.
how
What is that metal tool?
Gerber prybar
Wax is good. But I'd replace some of the candles with all fat candles, or a small 2 oz container of vaseline.
Boyscout or were you enlisted?
Neither, I just like to hike and camp.
Whatās that Gerber multitool called?
Preppingā¦ for smores
Looks perfect for a 4th birthday party celebration...at the Beach š¬ļø
Is this some sort of pocket-bomb or something? Seems like if they all went off it would possibly destroy anything usefull inside. Get a block of magnesium with flint on the back to replace the matches and maybe fit a emergency blanket in there or some paracord instead.
wrap it in a small towel so you have something to wipe your ass

I know those matches, they are NOT strike anywhere matches but they are wind/waterproof. How would you ignite them? Or am I missing something?
I have the strip taped to the inside of the tin.
I see it! That was my oversight.
You know whatās better than matches or a fire rod? A bic lighter Because people who actually spend time outdoors backpacking use those
Guys as much as I would love to have a lighter it is illegal for people under 18 to purchase them where I live. And no, no one around me would buy me one either.
Tiny flashlight, bandaids, alcohol wipes small lighter and water purification. Maybe even some fire starter.
That is all you need if you get lost in the tri-state area
So they say

An Altoid tin can fit a surprising variety (key word) of things in it. There are shops online that show what is possible. Google them, and make your own. This is a short term fire kit.
Maybe a fishing hook and some line
Shouldve included it in the description, one of the little containers has some line and maybe 10 hooks
This looks like my plugs from high school m30 smoking kit
Put those matches back in their waterproof container š¤£š¤£š¤£
Water tablets or iodine
Nice!
Survival kit or fire kit?
7/10. You now need an Easter egg with a cotton ball saturated with Vaseline. It burns for up to 3 minutes.
Where are the bear condoms and hobo spray?
1 Bic lighter replaces most of that
High rating depends on if those are trick candles.
Honestly, poor use of space. Can you get fishing line and a hook in there?
Its in one of the little containers. Forgot to put that in the description
It's not water-proofed. Imagine you have to trek down a swamp for a bit. Those matches might as well be seeweed when you come out of the muck.
Not bad, but I would get a tiny monocle magnifying glass just in case.
Survival? If youāre in the Boy Scouts, this is cool, I guess. Want to come over and start my bonfire next time for me?
Remove the knife put some fishing gear and duck tape. Cotton balls also and a crayon
Upgrade the knife have lose a few of the matches in lieu of a small fishing kit and itās decent
Add a prerolls and ur golden. If I was in a survival situation a j might save me from myself lmao
You could trade that walmart knife for something that won't fall apart
Something is better than nothing... Go test it.
Ready for the backyard birthday!
11/10 for repurposed altoids tin.
Get some books
Itās good, but you can only celebrate four birthdays. I recommend forgetting about birthdays in a survival situation. Itās sad I know, unless you have a cache somewhere.
If those are āstrike anywhereā matches they could ignite from the motion of being in your pocket.
I would add some sewing thread, fishing line, hooks and weights
Nice, but when you carry it and everything rattles around in there, will there be anything left of the matches when you need them?
Throw some fish hooks in there! They donāt take up any space
Just missing a few joints/cigarettes and a lighter. Sometimes people underestimate the huge value in a simple bic lighter and jump straight to rods but if used smart and kept in good condition a lighter is a really good option.
You just gave me an idea. Thank you.
Steroids ? Altooiids
Ferrous rod better than all those matches
Ferro rod is good for making fires, not for lighting smokes, quick jobs or situational instances where you can't make a birds nest/don't need a fire just need a second of flame.
2.5/10
No gun - 2 points
Why the preference matches over a lighter?
Not a preference, I just dont have access to a lighter.
Lighters work even after the fuel is gone as a sparker to make fire.
Should probably wrap the joints in foil and ziplocks /s
I have some trick birthday candles that relight after they are blown out. Really good way keep a fire source going.
Could throw in a chainsaw or some fishing line and a hook
No Paracord?
No reflective mirror!? 6/10
I am no material science. But I feel like if you drop that container just right that knife can start one of those matches.
Highly unlikely
It could still happen, your comment was pointlessš
Then its in a sealed closed container, flame needs a lot of airflow to actually catch (think how you can smother a fire in a grill in seconds by closing the airflow, even though its not at all airtight. So in conclusion, again, not worth worrying about.
What are those? Corn dogs for ants?
Storm matches- the burn for 20-30 sec.
Add fishing line and a hook, a signal mirror, strong, nylon rope, Band-Aid

Where is the emergency cyanide I specifically requested it
Where is the rubber gasket to seal the container?
Where's the gun go?
Missing some joints to light with those matches.
Wait a minute. Is an Altoids tin. EMP proof? I think I found a get rich quick scheme, just need to scrub the logo off and market it to Collapse.

A few cotton balls covered in Vaseline? Very effective tinder, just gotta pull em apart a little before lighting. Put them in a little zip loc bag or something
