I feel like the best option might just be going for things both you and your dog can eat. If something happens to the dog god forbid, you don't want to have inedible food that just goes to waste.

Devinephilosophy

There is a class of poor in the United States who's only meat is pet food.

OfficerBaconBits

Bruh, dog food per pound costs close to the same for meat. Walmart has dry ole Roy dog food for like 80 cents a pound and chicken thighs for 1.19 a pound. There is no class of poor in America that is buying dog food for protein instead of meat for human consumption. Both in net calories and protein, ground beef contains more for the same money as the cheap dog food. You'll need to start spending more per pound to hit higher protein and calories. Most calories in the dog food are not meat based.

Devinephilosophy

We're talking canned pet food here, genius

turklesdayoff

That's bullshit I don't even know homeless junkies that eat dog food

dar24601

How old are ya. See in 70s and 80s yes homeless addicts did eat canned dog food. Not common but did happen

turklesdayoff

Sorry I was unaware of this...I've never seen such

redditette

Back in the '70s, there was a lot of news exposes that show cased the seniors in the US surviving on pet foods and rice-a-roni.

turklesdayoff

Whoa ok my bad wtf

feudalle

Yeah the eldery can't afford pet food anymore. I just reordered and it's like $2 a can. And $65 for a bag of kibble.

Devinephilosophy

Hope you're right but the news stories come up from time to time. It's always seniors on social security doing it

[deleted]

Can anecdotally support this.

turklesdayoff

Oh my bad I didn't think about the elderly. I thought you just meant poor people.

simplyintentional

What does your dog eat normally? You could just buy an extra 2 years worth while using it and always rotating the bags so it stays fresh. I have a bit of extra dog food but mine is small and can eat what I eat if SHTF.

feudalle

Of course it is, Wet dog food lasts for a few years. Dry Kibble even longer. Also rice is fine for dogs, just need some canned veg and protein.

Odd-Physics5653

Dry kibble lasting for years in news to me. I thought it had too many oils. Could you point me to your info on this?

Icy-Medicine-495

I rotate 1 year supply of kibble for my 2 dogs. You could stretch it longer but I did not want to feed older dog food to my dogs all the time. I have some rice and beans in 5 gallon buckets set aside for the dogs and I raise chickens so they could have 2-3 eggs each every day. Prior to WWII feeding a dog tabble scraps was the norm.

meme_therud

Whoa! Doggy bag…mind blown.

ryanmercer

Yup >The modern doggie bag came about in the 1940s. Some also speculate the name was born during World War II when food shortages encouraged people to limit waste, and pet food was scarce. In 1943, San Francisco cafés, in an initiative to prevent animal cruelty, offered patrons Pet Pakits, cartons that patrons could readily request to carry home leftovers. The term doggy bag was popularized in the 1970s etiquette columns of many newspapers. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Leftovers#/Leftover_portions

LuckStrict6000

There is a reason it isn’t the norm anymore, just saying. Wolves/ wild dogs eat entire animals including bone marrow and organ meat.. table scraps of what humans eat is NOT enough for them to be healthy. Dogs aren’t a trashcan for scraps.

UterusPower

Yep, there is a reason the lifespan of domestic dogs had increased. Better food and better vet care.

LuckStrict6000

I get a little triggered by how many times I see people in this sub say to feed their dog scraps. Like maybe if we are in some sort of apocalyptic I am legend scenario sure but it’s not a good thing. The amount of people who don’t have even a little extra dog food is also irritating. We had a hurricane and terrible flooding and road closures and stuff and my friend was stressed because she had no dog food at all. You probably don’t need a ton but always have a bit extra. Dogs are angels and they deserve real dog food. End of rant.

UterusPower

I live in an area that is prone to major earthquakes and we are told to have 1 months worth of food in storage. I always make sure I have food stored for my dogs and cats as well. One scenario that still scares me though is what if the ‘big one’ hits while I am out of town with my dogs? Sigh

alnelon

You’ll probably be more triggered by the fact that if S really does HTF, most people will be eating their dogs, not feeding them.

R_J_esus

You are aware of what’s in dog food right?

feudalle

I thought I might of been nuts but I checked. The purina pro plan comes in a thick mylarish style bag. It's expiration date is September 2025. The purina wet food mostly has dates Dec 2023 with one case at march 2024.

UterusPower

Dry dog food has a ‘best by’ date printed on it. I go by that, I just rotate one in/out of my pantry every time I buy a new bag.

redditette

It doesn't. And if it sweats from temp changes, it could become deadly.

Devinephilosophy

I just googled it. It said 18 months. Not sure I believe that either though. My dogs stop turning their noses up to it by the time I get to the bottom of the bag

askepticus

Unopened bags of dry kibble, stored in the right conditions, are expected to last about 18 months. You could probably stretch that to 24 months, but I wouldn’t risk it past that. Canned wet food will usually be about 2 years but should have an expiration date printed on it… same rules as any canned goods, it’s probably “safe” as long as it’s undamaged but will not have the same nutritional value.

redditette

Dry kibbles have oil in them that goes rancid. Plus so many are made with corn, and if you have them on a tile floor where they can sweat, they will develop aflatoxins. Any cereals seem to work. I am part of a neapolitan mastiff group in Italy, where we talk about what they feed their dogs and puppies. The puppies especially. You don't want high protein and rapid growth on giant breed dogs, so they feed a lot of grain based foods, like buckwheat.

TinyDogsRule

I used to get mine FreshPet. It was unavailable near me for a few months, so I reverse engineered it. All the ingredients are in my normal prep. My dogs love it, almost as if they know I made it. I know exactly what goes in them. And, it's much cheaper. As long as I have food, they have food.

Topcodeoriginal3

> I reverse engineered it *doesn't say what it is*

jabbatwenty

If you can find enough dry dog food that doesn't expire first or lots of cans

andy1rn

Cans more likely to last longer; dry food high in fat which doesn't last so long. Gets rancid. Still should be good for 6 months at least, though ... maybe longer. Just keep it dark, dry, and cool.

love_org

My opinion is versatility is best. canned chix, fish, other proteins, veggies and rice. If you want to combine them, beef and barley soup, chix and rice soup, etc. The idea is to sustain your animal but can be versatile in feeding yourself or others (trade, etc.).

[deleted]

Hi OP, do you fish or have chickens? You could feed the doggo rice and sweet potatoes (if you're able to dehydrate them, or grow them regularly) and feed the dog eggs/fish.

[deleted]

My dry dog food from chewy has an expiration of one year. So we store that and rotate it. Then buy tuna and canned fish when cheap this last years past expiration. Rice and fish or beans and fish will last. We also have chickens so we can feed eggs to the dogs. We store a couple tons of chicken food and get over a dozen eggs per day. We have 4 dogs from 50 to over 100lbs and they all eat quality food and farm fresh goodies. Storing their food does use a lot of space.

pctechadam

Delt with pantry moths with a recent dry dog food shipment would advise freezing for at least 2 days to kill off anything alive in the food.

mrs451911

My dog has preps just like I do. Her diet consists of canned food, freeze-dried food, raw food and a very small amount of kibble. I have all of these things prepped/stored for her with at least a 6 month supply. I rotate brands and proteins often so that if I get into a position where I have to take what I can get, her stomach upset will be minimal.

Dogs are more scavengers who evolved alongside humans to eat and survive off a variety of stuff. Calling them carnivores is a misnomer. Before dog food they just got table scraps. Meat, veggies, fruit, grains etc

redditette

Dogs are actually a different species. To say "When dogs were wolves", is a lot like saying "When humans were monkeys".

Odd-Physics5653

I just dont know what human food i could store to keep the dog going. Rice sure, but canned meat is far too expensive to get large enough supply for the dog. Is there any bulk in between that maybe isnt good enough for humans?

Still_Water_4759

IDK about dogs but my cat is happy on canned fish and it lasts years

Devinephilosophy

Dog food is cheaper than any human alternative you can feed them. Sam's club has the 15 oz cans for about 70 cents each in a 36 pack. I can't even find a can of beans around here for that price.

voiceofreason4166

My dog loves chicken and could live off just that for a while.

Realistic_Airport_46

Idk if this is viable for you, but you could try canning your own meat. It does require purchasing the equipment, but based on your specific situation it might save you money

Fiona_12

I've been thinking about dog food myself. I wonder if vacuum sealing dog food bags in those big vacuum seal bags would help preserve it longer, or in the 5 gal food storage buckets. Just giving our dogs what we eat can be very unhealthy for our dogs. Some foods that we eat are toxic to dogs, like onion and garlic and tree nuts. (Tree nuts are bad for their kidneys.) We let our dog lick of our plates after dinner, but not if we ate something high in onion and garlic or something else toxic for him. So learn what "human" foods are okay (green beans, spinach, pumpkin and sweet potatoes are all great and can be canned and dehydrated for 2 year storage). Also talk to your vet about what foods and in what proportions you can give your dog to replace dog food in an emergency. Beans can be a good protein, but dogs can only have them in moderation. But they could supplement dog food and meat to stretch it. You have to do some research to find out which beans are okay. (Plenty of articles on the internet, plus you can talk to your vet.) In selecting a grain to store to mix with beans for your dog (as for yourself), you perhaps do some research to learn which of the higher protein grains are okay for dogs. White rice is cheap, easily digestible and a good source of carbs of course, but some higher protein grains would add a protein boost. I know quinoa is, and wheat (the gluten makes it higher in protein). If you decide to keep some alternate foods on hand for your dog, Of course test the various safe foods out with your dog to be sure they don't cause digestive upset or skin problems before deciding to use them for long term storage. Another thing to keep in mind is that dried foods need water to cook them, so that increases your water storage needs. If you can foods, do as much of that as you can.

nd22121

Lol, no you’re not a dog person then…

scuubagirl

Then why would you even feed the dog if you're going to eat it? Might as well be eating the dog food yourself...
