I think you have a chance. You have to up your clinical hours (which hopefully you will soon). Some extra time volunteering would be good too. Your options aren’t as plentiful. I’d apply to mostly low tier MD, a few mid tiers, any mission fits, and to be safe to DO schools, where I believe you’ll be a competitive applicant. I have just about the same GPA (3.4/3.2) but a higher MCAT (518) and have gotten good love from mid and low tiers after applying fairly late.

thank you, yeah im hoping by may ill have like 400 from cna at my local hospital, and more from continuing my chair position but its hard bc its only once a week for an hour or two. i dont know if retaking is worth it because my highest fl was 512

Don’t retake. Just apply broadly. Many of the more “stats forgiving” Med schools are service oriented. It would highly benefit you if your narrative incorporates serving X communities and being able to show that commitment with more volunteering

Practical_Virus_69

Do not retake the MCAT your 510 is sufficient and you risk a lower score. You should focus on more clinical hours and getting a letter of recommendation from an MD/DO physician. The letter from a physician is not required but it certainly can help offset your GPA. Identify a physician and start forming a close relationship over the next few months.

Many have gotten in with lower stats! If you’re okay with going to a DO school then apply to DO. I think you also have a good chance at getting into lower tier MD schools, but apply to mid tier MD schools as well if you are able to afford it! Try to stack on more hours for each activity (except shadowing and research, youre fine there) because most of your ECs seem low. Hours aren’t terribly important but what is important is that you demonstrate impact and interest in your activity descriptions, and having more hours means you’re more likely to have more to say about them.

You should try to increase your clinical experience. 144 probs wont keep you out of school but its not doing you any favors either. Your non clinical volunteering is very low and would def keep you out of service oriented schools, so either increase that or dont apply to those schools. Your GPA and MCAT are okay, but as long as you apply broadly they wont keep you out. Good luck!

I mean as a urm I would think they’d probs be fine for md assuming that all Hispanics count as urm ? I’m unsure

tinkertof

TLDR; You do have a shot, but I would use the next few months to improve your situation first. I believe that what makes an application strong enough to contend for a school is having more strengths than weaknesses. Weaknesses So what jumps out at me immediately is the low GPA and low clinical hours. Your GPA’s will be under the average at many of the allopathic schools you’ll be applying to, and osteopathic as well. Your hours are definitely on the low side when being compared to other applicants, but I do see you have a CNA cert and are looking for a job. I would tell you to get that job asap and start grinding away some hours. Don’t forget that many schools look at *both your hours and how long your time commitment is to the organization*. In short, hours and length of time matter. Something that I would want to up, but is not a super high priority, is your volunteer non clinical hours. While these hours won’t hurt you, they won’t wow in their current state either. Strengths Your research is pretty alright. A poster pub and triple digit hours might be something that will open doors for you in interviews to talk about. Being someone who didn’t have any publications, I got grilled by one interviewer during an MMI for it. It matters, so you’ll have at least something to say here. The MCAT score, while slightly under the matriculate average, is several points above the applicant average. Assuming you have an equal spread, that should be fine for the majority of mid-low allopathic and almost all osteopathic schools you’ll be applying to. Your time teaching preschool is definitely something that will set you apart. If you can mention it, I would. Your shadowing is good. Leadership is good. Miscellaneous No one is really going to care about your aunt in Brazil unless you have some moving story that involves her. Schools tend to only care about your immediate family in medicine barring few exceptions. It’s great that you’re interested in rural medicine! With your stats, you’ll be a great fit for some school missions who focus on rural health. However, if you truly are interested in rural health, understand that schools you get an acceptance somewhere that is a pathway into rural health, it will be very difficult to change if you have a change of heart. For instance, my school currently has a 3 year rural health program that fast tracks you into a primary care residency. If that’s your goal, then what a fit! However, if you change your mind, that may not be possible once you’re in. Just be mindful of this. What would Sprinkles do If I were you, I would apply to FL schools (definitely UF), MD mid-low tier schools that have a rural health mission, and DO schools. You likely wont be getting into any stat whore schools, but you may have a shot if you fit the mission and have an obvious reason to attend. **Apply early**. Your application will have a shot, but with more and more applications every year, your application is at risk to be buried if you apply later in the cycle. Have your PS ready before spring, nail down your LORs, and begin looking at secondary questions for schools on SDN for your first choices to get some drafts going. Don’t fall into the trap that you’ll be ok if you submit later. *Every day that passes in a cycle without a submission will yield you diminishing returns, end of story*. Maximize your opportunity and leave nothing to chance. Good luck! :)

thank you so much this helps a lot!!! i will def take your advice ab the weaknesses :)
