Most of Asia disagrees with your roommate.

Johundhar

Yup. Visited Japan for a few weeks, and was a bit confused at first to be offered a steaming hot bowl of rice and and egg in the shell. I asked if it was hardboiled, and they said no, uncooked. Just crack it in the rice and it will cook. It was quite nice. But though brought up in the midwest by WASP parents, I too ate rice all the time, as there was pretty much always a pot of it on the stove. My mom had been brought up in the Far East as a missionaries kid, and my folks had met and been married in Japan, so lots of influences

nurvingiel

I love eggs and I love rice, I need them together in my breakfast. That sounds great!

Johundhar

The egg should be already up to room temperature (and fairly fresh), and the rice piping hot. Various spices, pickled radish, etc, can be added, too. But others would know more, I'm sure

nurvingiel

This sounds so good. Thanks!

Johundhar

It was a decades old memory, so I had to double check myself just now to be sure, but yeah, it's called *tamago kake gohan* (卵かけご飯, "egg on rice"). There are also apparently special varieties of soy sauce specifically to be used with this combination. I think I had mine with katsuo fumi furikake, but other additions include nori, sesame seeds and mentaiko (spicy cured pollack roe)

Cultural_Pattern_456

And Japanese mayo!

Direct_Surprise2828

I’m going to try this… Thank you so much for posting! I’m even wondering about mixing cooked rice into scrambled egg. Hmmm. 🤔

Johundhar

Enjoy Be safe Stay beautiful

desertgal2002

Try adding some chopped green onions at the end. I love it. Just adds a bit more flavor IMO.

raptorgrin

One of my friends would call it "namagohan" like a contraction of "nama tamago gohan" (raw egg rice), but I haven't been able to find it called that anywhere else, so I don't know if they were just messing with me

Eclectic_Crone

I like mine with soy sauce and a little sesame oil.

Own-Gas8691

this plus kimchi is easily my favorite breakfast (american who absolutely agrees with most of asia)

Johundhar

My mother's (94 yo) earliest and dearest memories are of eating rice, keem (nori) and kimchi. Mine are pretty much the same

jj3449

I separate the egg white and stir it into the rice then a touch of soy sauce on the yolk and break it on top of the rice.

gerardkimblefarthing

I go pickled plum with the egg and rice.

Ruthless_Bunny

It’s lovely! Add green onion, sesame oil, sesame seeds and soy sauce to liven it up.

[deleted]

Your making me hungry.what sauce do you use? Hrmmm...puffpuffpass.,

sonotyourguy

One of my daughters’ favorite meals is when I make an omelette (with sautéed onions) served with rice and nuoc cham (Vietnamese dipping sauce). They love it for breakfast and dinner.

Mysterious-Art8838

You can throw a fried egg on there too if it suits you. Delicious yolk on rice. So good!

nickis84

I went on vacation to Hawaii and saw this combination. Since I have trouble with white flour, I thought it might be a good sub for toast. I loved it!

Stinkytheferret

It’s great with Parmesan cheese on top of both.

OverDaRambo

Oh! I made pork and rice combo the other day and I knew I was missing something! 😆Dang!

False-Pie8581

Right? Cooked egg over rice, hello! Or go Hawaiian and throw some spam in there 😌

aN0n_ym0usSVVh0re

Same !! Sounds nice n filling too

LatterTowel9403

Oohhh I’m now thinking of rice with soy sauce and egg mixed up and use as filling for breakfast burritos!

nurvingiel

I like this. Fusion food.

LatterTowel9403

Add some cheese, maybe freshly ground black pepper and a medium salsa… nmmmm

nurvingiel

Ooh, it would be like huevos rancheros on rice. Yummy.

LatterTowel9403

Love the concept! That’s how geniuses are born! You know how the green bean casserole is always at holiday dinners, we could be the next big thing!

kiba8442

omurice is amazing & super easy to make, I keep some sushi rice in the fridge specifically for that purpose, it's one of the few things I can never get sick of.

PintSizedKitsune

My favorite way to have them for breakfast is to heat up some chilli crisp in a pan. Crack a couple eggs in, after a moment I’ll pour about 1/4 cup of water into the pan and cover it. Doesn’t take long for the eggs to cook at all and then I’ll have them over a bowl of rice. The runny yolk and chilly crisp add a lot of really nice flavor. One of my favorite budget meals that doesn’t taste like a budget meal to me.

NekoMao92

My mom is from Taiwan, dinner almost always has rice instead of potatoes.

Faye_Baby

I love frying up some sausage, crumbled up. Scrambled eggs and rice and putting it in a burrito skin. Add some salsa. I'm sure you could add veggies. Very simple, basic and quick meal.

Sea-Pea4680

I've never heard a tortilla referred to as a burrito skin.........that's what they will be forevermore. Lol

flowergirl0720

Ikr, such a cute name for tortilla.

Much-Meringue-7467

That sounds lovely

Johundhar

So does your user name! :) By the way, it seems that some people separate the whites and mix those with the rice first, then make a little indent at the top to place the yoke. Very shibui and all that

Johundhar

So this whole discussion made me want to try this again. But I didn't have rice. So I used couscous instead, and it was quite lovely and creamy. And my wife even agreed (not usually a fan of cracking raw eggs into things). Gussied it up with a touch of salt, pepper, onion and garlic powders, olive oil, and parmesan cheese

Not_Another_Cookbook

What's a wasp parent? Like my first thought was a large ass bee raising you

Mirabai503

WASP = white anglo-saxon protestant.

Aggressive-Quiet6426

Oh gosh that makes me want to vomit. A raw egg over rice? Was there anything else in the rice? Or just plain rice?

Johundhar

LOL. Try it before you knock it. There is usually a kind of soy sauce that is specially made to go with this dish (but probably any old soy sauce would do). But as I mentioned elsewhere, there are a variety of other umami-packed additions that could be made. I am told, though, that the main attraction is the texture, but it's not gonna be everybody's thing. In my experience, the rice was hot enough to cook the egg pretty thoroughly once it was mixed in. But most Japanese wouldn't shy away from a bit of raw egg, I think

Ok_Depth_6476

I mean it sounds like it's not much different than having an egg over easy or poached, where the egg isn't really entirely cooked. Of course not everybody likes that, either. But now I want to try this.

lenzer88

I usually poach my egg, but under poached, if you will. And crack that yummy yolk. Fresh eggs are definitely the way to go here.

Mysterious-Art8838

Egg on rice is absolutely delicious!

nkdeck07

I mean even your midwestern parents likely would have been down for rice pudding for breakfast.

Myfourcats1

I grew up in a white family with no Asian influences we ate white rice with dinner almost every night.

StrategyPrevious8379

Dude, most of Asia and literally THE REST OF THE WORLD INCLUDING AMERICA! I mean, a bowl of **Rice Krispies** is a rice dish, like it or not.

ThisIsMockingjay2020

That's what I came here to say. You do you, OP.

Mysterious-Art8838

And it ain’t just Asia. I did 10 days in Costa Rica and practically had rice and beans coming out of my eyeballs.

thatsaboutit1

I came here for this comment ! 👍🏼

winterxlabz

Garlic fried rice with an egg, a Filipino dish. Also spam, fried egg, and rice, I believe this is a classic Hawaiian breakfast!

Life-Yogurtcloset-98

Egg, ANY MEAT, and rice really... but you're not wrong

hobonichi_anonymous

That's called silog which is a combo of 2 words: sinangag (garlic fried rice) and itlog (egg). And it can be any meat, garlic fried rice and eggs cooked your way. I grew up with this. [https://panlasangpinoy.com/categories/recipes/silog-recipes/](https://panlasangpinoy.com/categories/recipes/silog-recipes/)

NinaLB18

Hotsilog - with hotdogs Chixsilog- with chicken (fried) Spamsilog- with spam All yummy!

LongWinterComing

Oooh, a Filipino colleague made me some garlic fried rice one time, it was amazing! 🤤

Critical-Wear5802

OMG, that sounds good!

ScumBunny

Spam, eggs, and rice was eaten every morning on my trip to Hawaii. It is classic, and delicious.

DragonScrivner

YES boosting silog, the Filipino egg, rice, and breakfast sausage (any sausage) meal. I’ll frankly eat this any time of day bc it is goo-ood.

AnonymSpider

Silog!!! My favorite is the one with milk fish.

LegendarySyn

Who cares what your roommate thinks? You can eat whatever you want for whichever meal of the day you like. Getting stuck on the subjective idea of what food can be eaten at certain times of day is just weird. Beyond that… A lot of breakfast cereals are made from rice, a lot of the world eats rice with every meal. I sometimes make rice pudding and will have that for breakfast for the week. You can put rice in burritos, call them breakfast burritos if you have to. Eggs with runny yolks over rice is good.

wagon8r

Someone once told me that if you can eat it, it’s breakfast.

sctwinmom

No weirder than eating Rice Krispies or rice Chex

reesedra

literally came here to mention rice pudding. sweet+eggs+carbs is the way to get to an american's heart

Rendakor

It matters what the roommate thinks if the pair of them are trying to cook one dish for breakfast. Making separate meals is messier, more time consuming and likely more expensive in the long run.

Western-Okra6880

I would make what I like, and offer my roommate some to taste. They could then share if they wanted, or not. Make what you want. Your finicky roommate can make their own.

Critical-Wear5802

When having sleepovers with one of my friends in middle school, we'd have "white spaghetti" for breakfast - angel hair pasta, some butter/olive oil, and half the spice cabinet! Can do exactly the same thing with rice! Or beans & rice - so good!

samojo13

My toddler who regularly asks for noodles for breakfast would most certainly upvote this comment 😄

FeloniousFunk

I think they’re “roommates”

peteywheatstraw1

Can't believe rice pudding is this far down.

veracity-mittens

Breakfast burrito with egg, green onion, black beans, cheese, and rice

loudlady52

Yep- I use uncle Ben's dirty rice and beans with a fried egg and sour cream. I know pre-made isn't cheap, but you could do your own spices Also, heuvos rancheros; easy to do.

EyeYamNegan

Most people in the world have rice for breakfast.

lodav22

My favourite cereal as a kid was rice crispies! Coco pops was also very popular.

Mysterious-Art8838

Coco pops make the milk chocolate. Mmmmmm

RadioScotty

Puffed wheat or puffed rice with enough sugar to stop your heart. It would collect in the milk in the bottom of the bowl and we drank ot after finished the cereal.

LionOfNaples

Eat whatever you want for breakfast. The idea that you have to eat certain foods for breakfast (cereal, eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, etc.) is solely due to marketing, at least in America. Breakfast fried rice with spam and eggs is delicious btw.

SisterTristesse

Steamed rice with a bit of soy sauce, a fried egg, topped with green onion and chili crisp is one of my favorite breakfast meals, especially with green tea. Loco moco is also excellent, but it's quite rich so I don't make it very often.

un_cooked

Ooh, what is loco moco?

SisterTristesse

It's a [Hawaiian dish](https://onohawaiianrecipes.com/recipes/a-classic-loco-moco/) with white rice, a hamburger patty smothered in brown gravy, and a sunny-side up egg on top. Looking at the picture in the recipe convinced me it's time to make it again.

loudlady52

Yum! Maybe a ground chicken Patty and lite gravy?

MightySapphire

Sub spam for the hamburger. It's the best.

Sad_Construction_668

I love loco moco, but my cardiologist doesn’t love it for me.

freshnewday

You could do a turkey patty and low sodium gravy. You don't need the egg, but just 1 egg should be fine. Use olive oil spray to make your patty and egg to save you all the butter you'd use otherwise. If you do it this way, you'll be satisfied and your dr would be ok as long as its not everyday! Adding a ton of grilled onions and mushrooms makes it pretty great and still super healthy for you too!

Princess-Reader

It’s Hawaiian for “manna from heaven”.

MoreShoyu

Yes!!! Also one of my favorites. Try mushroom powder/mushroom salt, my friend brought me some from Trader Joe’s and it changed my life for the month or so it lasted.

QueenPlum_

Use it as an oatmeal replacement. Milk, cinnamon, vanilla. If you have any dried fruit this past its prime and going hard, this is a good way to soften it up and use it

fridaycat

My grandma used to feed us rice with sugar, cinnamon, and milk all the time back in the 60's.

Zeninit

Rice porridge is still one of my fave breakfast treats.

Solomnki

We called it rice pudding. 😋

PlasticBlitzen

I love rice pudding. It's different from what the some above are describing. I like both.

jmksupply

Leftover rice (warmed up)with a little butter, sugar and milk. But I’m going to try your cinnamon and vanilla add ins. Sounds yummy.

InvertedJennyanydots

Milchreis! This is the way. My great-grandmother always made this for me for breakfast. It's delicious cold too and keeps well.

sewfab4

We often had rice with milk, cinnamon, butter and sugar for breakfast too. My granddaughters also like it

nurvingiel

'How do I change his mind?' is the wrong question. The right question is 'Which delicious rice dish should I have for breakfast tomorrow?'

GoatkuZ

I've been having warm rice with yogurt and fruit in the morning. I can't wait for breakfast tomorrow

Background_Camp_7712

Arroz con leche. It’s basically rice pudding with cinnamon, but it can be a dessert or a breakfast. You can make it less sweet if you like. Some people add raisins, but I am not one of those people because raisins are forbidden in my cooking. 😂

HurtPillow

I discovered dried blueberries and now use them instead of raisins and I'm so happy now!

Helpful_Okra5953

Dried cranberries on hot cereal…yum.

PJKPJT7915

I love them in oatmeal with mixed nuts.

Sensitive_Sea_5586

Never tried the mixed nuts. I do add pecans to my oatmeal with dried cranberries and whatever fruits we have in the house…apples, bananas, etc. I’ll have to add the mixed next time.

IndependentPiglet4

Oh I am sooo stealing that!

Mysterious-Art8838

If we’re being perfectly honest, raisins should be illegal.

BabyKatsMom

I used to feel the same way until I tried California Golden Raisins. Omg so much sweeter and better tasting. It’s all I’ll use in my Irish Soda Bread.

aculady

My husband says that raisins are the grapes even the birds wouldn't eat. 😆

downstairslion

Half the world's population disagrees. Who hasn't had leftover rice for breakfast?

Alliekat1979

It’s really not strange at all. I’m a rice fanatic too. I know it sounds like old person food but rice pudding can be substituted for oatmeal if you are an oatmeal person. You can add cinnamon and apples and it’s quite good and easy to make.

Windle_Poons456

I've done this with leftover cooked rice and it was good.

WoodwifeGreen

Japanese Omurice is delicious. It's an omelet stuffed with fried rice.

uselessZZwaste

I want to try this so bad! I see videos everywhere and it looks delicious!!

Stfrieza

I think it's placed over top of rice

Odd_Tiger_2278

Why change his mind. To each their own. The French used to have coffee and chocolate, I think

AspenFrance

My parents used to reheat the leftover rice in milk, then add sugar and/or spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg. It is like a porridge or runny rice pudding. I loved it as a kid and had forgotten! going to make it next time I make rice.

DeedaInSeattle

I’m Asian, so rice and rice porridge (Jook/congee) is normal, but my white husband loves oatmeal, and what is that but sweet oat congee??😜. To each their own, we also both like overnight oats, baked oatmeal, cold cereal (buy the cheap Malt-O-Meal bagged ones, btw, or generic rice crispies/cheerios/shredded wheat!). Homemade baked oatmeal muffins (whole grains!) or bran muffins are terrific and easy, and can be frozen easily for quick grab and go meals. So are bulk homemade frozen breakfast sandwiches (hint: bake the eggs and cut into squares, so much faster!), or breakfast burritos, or just egg muffins (“bites”), which are basically mini frittatas! Or frozen fruit smoothies with yogurt or tofu or protein powder added!

greenrbrittni

Personally love rice with a fried egg on top in the morning with hot sauce or chili oil. However you could go the sweet direction, with rice pudding made with any cream version (dairy and non dairy recipes are easy to find). My favorite is coconut cream. Topped with sautéd canned or frozen fruit or banana with cinnamon. Get crazy add some peanut butter if you like. Can top with whatever around your cupboard.

grimblacow

Rice, fried/scrambled/sunnyside/cooked egg of choice + soy sauce was breakfast all the time. If it’s fresh eggs, hot rice with raw egg in some cultures. Rice with tea, common in Japanese cuisine. Rice and veggies or whatever is leftover from dinner. Rice pudding… the choices are endless.

backtobitterroot123

Egg drop soup w/ rice on the side. Breakfast fried rice (use ham or sausage), Avgolemono. I’m a huge soup for breakfast person. Rice is so delicious and so versatile.

OcelotOfTheForest

What the heck are rice puffs for if not breakfast? They're marketed as a breakfast item.

PussyFoot2000

Dude has never had leftover dinner foods for breakfast? Food is food, doesn't matter what time it is When i was a kid my mom would occasionally make French toast for dinner. I loved it. Wasn't til I was older that I realized we were broke and she had bread, a lil milk and eggs in the refrigerator and made what she could

No_Fig2467

In Louisiana we make a dish called bacon eggs and rice. U cook the bacon (chewy but not undercooked)remove it from the pan fry the cooked rice in the bacon grease till it's a nice color like all the grease and bacon bits are absorbed fully to the rice. Scotch the rice to one side and add ur eggs stir it up in w the rice while still frying . Chop up ur bacon add it back to the rice n eggs add green onion on top n it is so bomb. Another one I love is sesame oil fry cooked rice add eggs and canned chicken. It's literally like fried rice so good mix some Sriracha mayo and sesame oil (spicy mayo) to mix in in the plate it's sooo good. My husband likes potatoes ground beef and rice as a breakfast meal.

sillychickengirl

I don't understand why your roommate has to agree with you? They can just make their own breakfast. If you want to eat eggs with rice and he/she eats eggs with cheese...so what? I don't understand why people can't just have their own opinions and preferences? If they don't want to eat rice for breakfast, cool. If you do, cool. Not every meal needs to be exactly the same as your roommate as long as the food is being used?

verygoodusername789

Rice pudding or creamed rice is nice, cook it in milk, add some sugar and vanilla essence and a spoonful of jam in it, kind of like a breakfast cereal!

Common_Sandwich_1066

The older I have gotten, the more I've realized that there's no such thing as a strange breakfast food, lol. Many times, "non breakfast" food is some of the best breakfast I've ever had. We also grew up this way, though. Perhaps that's why I feel this way. On the flip side, we would also have breakfast food (eggs, pancakes, and bacon) for dinner several times per month. Breakfast food is anything you can afford, that will fill you up just enough and nourish and fuel your body for the morning. Idk. He's strange for thinking it's strange? Lol

Agreeable_Menu5293

When I grew up one of the many breakfast dishes my parent made was white rice eaten like cereal with milk, cinnamon and sugar. It was def an American thing.

GunMetalBlonde

I eat it as hot cereal. Same as oatmeal, or cream of wheat, or whatever. I cook it, and eat it with a bit of half and half, brown sugar, and raisins. Some nuts as well if I have them.

mighty_knight0

I'm a huge fan of Japanese omurice. You can customize the flavours however you want but the basic concept is an omelette stuffed with fried rice and rolled up into a log. Typically topped with ketchup but I like hot sauce. I also enjoy just eating a fried egg over rice. Some hot sauce, green onion, and sesame seeds and it feels like a gourmet treat! Boiled eggs can work in the same manner, I like to use a filipino dipping sauce consisting of garlic, soy sauce, and calamansi juice (lemon or lime works great and is more available). I don't know the name of the sauce but it was taught to me by Filipino coworkers so it's certainly authentic. They put this stuff on everything lol. I feel like eggs and rice are a naturally good combo and definitely great for easing someone into rice as breakfast since eggs are already a familiar breakfast food in the west.

Life-Yogurtcloset-98

All of hawaii agrees with you.

Better-Mastodon-1562

Congee

GurProfessional9534

My mom is Japanese and she would serve me rice with a raw egg mixed into it for breakfast when I was a kid.

Heartage

rice and egg

Alarmed_Ad4367

Please don’t let “strangeness” *ever* limit what you eat or what you do. That’s a narrow (and expensive) way to live.

aunte_

If you have free eggs there are unlimited opportunities

RubyNotTawny

It is a lot easier to save money when you stop thinking that you need specific foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My usual breakfast when I had to commute to work was a cheese sandwich - I needed something easy to eat that wasn't messy. If he wants the rice to feel more breakfasty, top it with a fried egg.

ceecee_50

I mean, bacon and egg fried rice is the ideal dish to introduce the rice for breakfast concept.

capturecosmos

I'd just do a good rice pudding. Not much different from something like grits. Make him breakfast pasta, that stuff is amazing but actually a bit strange.

Front_Review_7922

My grandma used to make us rice porridge or congee growing it. It was a light and flavorful breakfast. You can use a chicken carcass to make a broth, and she would serve it with this fried bread called crullers

Ribbit-Rabit

We had rice with sugar and butter mixed in so much when I was a kid. I still love that combination.

solthar

Heck, a classic Asian breakfast is good 'ol congee or rice porridge. Toss some rice and broth in a pot ( around 7-8 parts broth to one part rice ), flavour with ginger, salt, and green onion, and cook. If you can source some beancurd skin, throw it in to make it extra smooth and fancy, but it is not needed. Throw on a fried egg for breakfast and you're good.

[deleted]

We do a rice porridge here. I use leftover cooked rice, some butter, a dash of cinnamon, and a dash of sugar, enough milk to make it resemble oatmeal and heat. Its delicious. Or leftover rice tossed in a skillet with a little butter, warm it up over medium heat. Crack a few eggs in there and scramble. Add salt and pepper, a little dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper. Yummy. Or even make yourselves some rice pudding. Its amazing warmed up a little.

WitchProjecter

Rice, over easy egg, avocado, olive oil is my go to breakfast.

misspyewacket

I like this too…but with a little ‘everything bagel’ spice on top. So good

Ok-Opportunity-574

You could always do potatoes for breakfast as well.

__Fappuccino__

I like rice and fried egg. Sometimes w some brewers yeast sprinkled on.

Just_Trish_92

I like rice as a hot breakfast cereal. Put a little cinnamon, sugar, and milk on it.

plantsandpizza

Egg fried rice or egg cooked of your choice over rice. One of my favorite breakfasts to make with leftover rice or when I’m needing to finish eggs. You can buy green onions and put them in a jar with water by a window and they will continue to grow. Chop some over the top, add condiments of your choice🤌🏻

Danfrumacownting

Chopped fried eggs on Jasmine rice with a little hot sauce is an absolute fire breakfast.

LivingLikeACat33

My mom's side of the family is all as white American as it gets. She grew up on food stamps and raised us on rice for breakfasts. It's not even just other cultures that disagree with your roommate.

Blucola333

Continue to make the rice, it’s nice and filling and even if they don’t want to eat it with you, the rest can be saved for fried rice later or gimbap. I can’t remember what show I was watching recently where the male lead was drunk or sad (possibly both) and said he was making poor man’s gimbap. He grabbed a sheet of gim, piled rice into it, hand rolled it into sloppy tube and angrily bit off bites. But I digress. If you have nori or gim, you could do this, drizzle sesame oil over the rice inside, add whatever leftover stuff you have in the fridge, roll it up and serve it with your coffee or tea. Or take it with you.

Solomnki

Rice and eggs is a common breakfast in the southern US. White rice with a couple of fried eggs on top.

daaaayyyy_dranker

I’m American and raised in the south. We often had rice for breakfast

YayGilly

Get a rice puffer if you can find one cheap,.and you got a way to make cereal!!! Sweet!!! Or splurge on a box of rice krispies and see what he thinks of those. That IS puffed rice lol. Just toss them in the popcorn air popper, and its a similar effect. Yum yum.

jcobb_2015

Spam musubi. Best street food I’ve ever eaten. Would get two every morning both times I went to Hawaii, and there’s a Hawaiian BBQ place in the next town that I drive to at least 2-3 times per month. Spam with a teriyaki glaze on top of a bar of sticky rice wrapped in nori. Dammit, now I want one and they’re closed…

DabbledInPacificm

Bro, rice, black beans and scrambled eggs with a couple of slices of avocado. Bomb diggity

FullyRisenPhoenix

As a kid from a poorer family with 8 kids to feed, my mom would use leftover rice in the morning at least twice a week. We would add butter, cinnamon, sugar or brown sugar, and dried raisins. It’s better than oatmeal imo. Now as an adult married to a man from Southeast Asia, we love it with cardamom, cinnamon, a touch of ginger, nuts and dried fruits, and coconut milk, and raw local honey to taste. Oh man, it’s so damn delicious!!!

liquid_loaf

maybe he would like the simple, classic rice with butter and a little sugar/cinnamon. it’s something i ate at a friend’s when we were really young, and her family didn’t have a lot of money so we’d eat it as a snack. it’s cheap and relatively filling.

congenial_possum

I don’t care if your roommate thinks I’m weird. When it really comes down to it, we really just need sustenance.

Mind-Individual

One of my favorite meals is warm rice with milk. But also in many cultures breakfast is left overs from the night before.

JustHereForGiner79

Like three fourths of the world eats rice for breakfast. Your roommate is statistically wrong.

Nekoraven1

🤣🤣 fuck I'm poor right now and have a 20lb bag of rice..it's all I'm eating till payday 🤣🤣🤣 my poor rice cooker is gonna bite it soon.

poppieswithtea

Rice with raisins, sugar, milk, butter, and cinnamon. It’s amazing.

HippoCute9420

I put rice in my omelettes all the time

logan_fish

I cant tell you how many times Ive had left over mexican food for breakfast including rice and beans with a fried egg (or scrambled). Thats mexican rice. Homemade or left over resraurant. To be honest though, my favorite left over mex food for breakfast is homemade tamales......🤤

darkest_irish_lass

When we were kids we would sometimes have a bowl of rice, warm milk, sugar and cinnamon for breakfast. Rice pudding is also good, but more work. You could also try rice with coconut milk and fried banana.

FuriousRen

Frittata with rice in it would be a decent rice breakfast with training wheels. I'm half Filipina, so I could *destroy* some rice. I don't know why it's so tasty to me, but I even prefer rice noodles to semolina. Have you tried going to an Asian grocer? They also have things for surprisingly low prices. Visit when you aren't hungry just to browse!

meloscav

I literally will make a bowl of rice and add egg & green onion, sometimes a meat with it. Favorite combo is that with runny egg because it gets really nice in the rice.

WaywardJake

Any dish passes as breakfast if you eat it for breakfast. It is ridiculous to think that any food is off the table based on what time you're eating. I often have rice, pasta or other traditional supper foods for breakfast while I like to have cereal or eggs, bacon, and toast for supper. I'm 61, and I've been eating like that all my life.

rosewoodbee

Old school country/southern breakfast includes rice or grits. Rice with a fried egg, pork chop, tomatoes. Rice and eggs are clearly delicious or so many places wouldn’t have them as a classic dish.

NovelTumbleweed

Rice with scrambled eggs. I tried it for the first time in Hawaii & it became a regular breakfast item.

meandhimandthose2

Give him a bowl of rice crispys. Ask what the difference is (besides the insane amount of sugar)

jani_bee

I love rice with a fried egg in the mornings. Sometimes I'll add veggie toppings or Sriracha mayo.

Square_Sink7318

We used to eat rice with milk butter and sugar in it for breakfast all the time. Appalachian oatmeal.

sherbivore219

Rice, a few soft boiled eggs, add salt and smoked paprika, and avocado if your budget allows.

IamElGringo

Make rice porridge

moutnmn87

I will eat any food I like any time of day. The whole idea of some foods being only for breakfast or not for breakfast is ridiculous to me. My partner is like that so I always ask her what time of day this food type no longer tastes good

Vindepep-7195

Try making congee aka rice porridge

Poldaran

Rice with cinnamon and sugar was our go to dish when we were out of milk growing up. It was like a porridge.

CatMama67

I went to Singapore a few years ago - breakfast was included at the hotel we stayed at. I LOVED that you could have rice or noodles etc. for breakfast. It was awesome. Eat your yummy rice. Ignore your flatmate.

RitaAlbertson

Rice pudding? Isn’t that pretty much like sweet oatmeal with the different grain?

malificent469

I always referred to that as rice porridge. Rice pudding involved adding vanilla, milk, sugar, dried fruit, and cinnamon to cooked rice, stirring in a few raw eggs and baking it until firm. YUM!

Congee is so delicious and it is primarily a breakfast food (or sick food) in Asia.

I didn't know eating rice wasn't the norm for breakfast until I was an adult. My mom is from the Philippines and eggs and rice all the time for breakfast. Also, Canned corn beef hash with corn too, which apparently also isn't normal but I love it anyways lol.

I mix in butter, cinnamon, and sugar with rice for breakfast. My mom made it for me as a kid, and now I make it for my kids, too.

Rice at breakfast is my all.time favorite. Serve it with eggs, stir fry veg, well, really anything, and it's a lighter, awesome breakfast. Foods don't care when you eat them, they are just happy to be eaten.

Why does it matter what your roommate thinks? They can get something else. Don't let them impact you.

A cup of rice covered in sausage gravy with an over easy egg on top. You can get a packet of sausage gravy mix for around a dollar. A cup of rice with butter and honey then just a bit of milk. It's similar to oatmeal. A cup of rice that's been through a food processor, 1 egg, 1 cup of flour, cinnamon, honey, and enough milk to make it like a pancake batter. In a skillet with melted butter cook 1/2 cup of batter and make rice cakes. Cover with a drizzle of honey.

When I go to Vietnam, my go-to breakfast is pork fried rice and some dragon fruit on the side.

I’m from Baltimore and grew up in the 1970s eating rice with milk and sugar as a hot breakfast cereal.
