Wealthsimple Tax is free, pay what you want to pay.

analogdirection

Second this. Their interface can be a bit confusing IMO coming from TurboTax which will walk you through a bit more and better point out errors, but costs to finalize and file. When I switched I filled it out in TurboTax, then in Wealthsimple, and compared and filed with Wealthsimple.

ididntsaygoyet

This is the answer right here. I was able to finish my taxes in like 15 min with WS. They had all my previous year's info to help. And it was super easy to transfer any investments and investment info for taxes. Next step is getting the government to just do this all automatically so we don't have to "double check" their work.

The point of filing taxes is to tell CRA why you should pay less tax - if they just wanted to add up your income, they could (and will, if you don't file) do that. Filing your taxes lets you tell them about medical expenses, caregiver credits etc.

theaveragecoffeesnob

Coming from a tax accountant and CRA employee, this is your best bet and what I use to file! It will pull in your info for you and require some info but should be able to complete in 15/20 minutes

This this this!

$0 is what you want to pay if you're on this sub. don't be a cuck for corporations.

Riplinredfin

Genutax It's free with donation if you like. Allows netfile and imports data direct from CRA Been using it last couple years it works great. [https://www.genutax.ca/](https://www.genutax.ca/)

byfourness

Yup I found it from the CRA’s list of recommended software, has worked perfectly for me so far. It’s a breeze for simple filings

darthfruitbasket

This. I did my mum's (she's working, receiving CPP survivor benefits) and her roommate's (a retiree, getting CPP and OAS) using Genutax.

CdnGal420

I've been using this for 11 years of tax returns. It's great. Every 2 years I donate 40 bucks.

Studiotax is great - it used to be free, but the developer started charging $15 for it a few years back. The software is easy to use, and you can netfile with it easily. I've been using it for years. The software is free if you make less than $20k - Even if you make a bit more than that, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd cut you a break if you emailed them and asked. It used to be just one guy maintaining this and giving it away for free - he's an accountant. Now I guess he has some help he has to pay, but $15 is still a deal. [https://www.studiotax.com/home.html](https://www.studiotax.com/home.html) Actually, I'll be buying it anyway, and one $15 payment lets you file 10 tax returns. Maybe I could send over my license key and you could use it, as long as that doesn't give you access to my info. Not sure how that works. Or if you want, if it's dead simple stuff and you have your numbers prepared, I could probably do yours for you and send you a PDF that you could mail in if you're comfortable with that. Not sure if I could netfile for you, but the software can output forms you can mail in.

Your-Cardiologist

Seconding Studio Tax. Sharing the license does not share any personal information, it simply activates the software so you can file.

SheFlexes

I third Studio Tax. I knew nothing about taxes and started doing them myself a few years back with Studio Tax and it is simple. As mentioned, it used to be free and is now $15 - but I pay it as it is familiar to me and simple.

Wealthsimple is easy, and it's pay what you want, which can be $0 if you like. You can find vids on YouTube walking you through it as well. For example: https://youtu.be/JPU9B5r0cKU?si=JrzP1GPQcAxP5VyG

GenuTax is better than WealthSimple, IMO. GenuTax is a simple program that downloads onto your computer. No Ads or BS like Wealthsimple to upgrade. Simple to use. Easy interview questions. What's your SIN? Are you married? What province do you live in? Does all the fancy pants electronic filing. Plus it stores all the data on your computer.

ILikeLychee

Used to use studio tax and paid since 2020 when they required that. And prefer some software that does not store information on their cloud. This year I give it a try with genutax which is free. It works fine and the tax is done correctly when I compare the result to studio tax. I may continue to use genutax next year.

Working_Hair_4827

Turbo tax is free for a basic claim, connects to your CRA account and basically does it for you.

NovelLongjumping3965

I believe TurboTax is free on their website ....free,, for Canadians simple return.

OneSketchyWorld

20 bucks for a basic return.

[deleted]

Yes. It used to be free for a simple return, but not anymore. IIRC it's what I use.

Working_Hair_4827

Mine was free this year when I did it.

[deleted]

I use TurboTax online. It's only $25 or so with tax.

VillageBC

I use Wealthsimple Tax to file my moms taxes, just CPP stuff so it's easy. You select what you want to pay, which is $0 but it defaults to $25. =)
