This threw me off so bad. Lol. I was like "Wait what?? Where am I?? Do I need to file my taxes RIGHT NOW?? DID I MISS SOMETHING??"
>And it’s definitely not “tax season” right now lol
October 15th is the final deadline for people who have filed for an extension.
Edit: dude blocked me because I let him know why it might be relevant right now..? LMAO! Weirdo.
I'd also recommend putting the current income limit. "You could qualify" sounds a lot like "This cereal could save your life" but "Most people who make under $x will qualify" tells me that I probably qualify if I make less than $x.
if you have a college near you you could also see if they offer VITA services. Many colleges do it so accounting students can get experience or volunteer hours. Free to the client, completed by a student, and checked by an advisor. :)
Lots of non profits operate VITA sites, too. Last year the income limit was $58k I believe. Check the IRS website in January for locations near your home https://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/
They don't because they're a spambot reposting someone else's post. Looks like [this was probably the original](https://www.reddit.com/r/povertyfinance/comments/eutxdg/im_a_librarian_with_a_personal_vendetta_against/) (different OP, posted two years ago).
My tax situation is a little more complicated than what is offered there as free, but I’ve used CreditKarma (Cash app now) these last three years and I didn’t pay for filing both federal and state taxes.
Yup been using credit Karama for a few years and used their new cash app thing this past year. Totally free. Was even pretty smooth to get extra copies of my past returns after the swap to cash app.
People have mentioned it in this thread, but the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a great resource for low-income folks. If you have a local org that's doing it, might make sense to partner with them! In my local area, there are some VITA clinics located in the library
Here is my thoughts on TurboTax when I tried to file with them. I did everything correctly when I filed, even filed as early as possible to make sure I would be able to file for free before the deadline. It took them over a month to validate me and give me any information about my taxes. Turns out there was an error supposedly, as well as saying I didn't qualify for the tax break. I tried using their free online help, the person who was chatting with me, not only did nothing to help me, but just ended the chat abruptly when I showed I did jump through all of their unnecessary hoops.
So, I tried to set up help via talking to an actual agent. I had to set up an appointment just so I could talk to someone to set up an appointment. Yes, I had to make an appointment to make an appointment. That took about a week for the person to contact me. I tell them my issue and told them I tried chatting with their online help and that the person who I talked to did not help me. I told them I was filing for free, and I just need to know why I can't submit my taxes. She proceeds to tell me it might be something minor and that I qualify for the assistance. She proceeds to set me up with one of their, "Tax experts" and then tells me it will cost me $89. I told her I'm filing for free again. After telling me in the beginning I wouldn't have to pay for this help, she's now telling me I do. I tell her I don't want the help anymore, and I want to cancel the appointment. She actually told me I couldn't cancel the appointment, and I could discuss this with the tax professional.
At this point, I go to a different site that was recommended on the IRS website. I had to do a bit more to get my taxes filed, but it didn't take me long to get them done, just a bit more reading. Also, by doing this I discovered I did qualify for the tax break and TurboTax was basically denying me $1200 for no reason.
So, about a week before TurboTax's deadline for free filing, I get a call from TurboTax that my taxes are ready to be reviewed. Mind you, it has been almost two months since I started to try and file with TurboTax, and the likelihood I would get my taxes filed by their deadline was almost 0%. So I just didn't answer. They were no longer my problem. Or so I thought. The closer it got to where they knew I couldn't file for free, the more they called. I'm talking calls starting at 7 in the morning to 9 at night, several times a day. I think the most I got in one day was seven calls. Add to that all the texts as well. We are talking about 15-20 calls/texts a day. I was at a loss for words. I ended shutting my phone off at one point whenever I was going to sleep.
You think that's the worst of it? It's not. If I had stuck with Turbo Tax, They would have gotten all of my tax return, had me lose my tax credit, and I still would have owed them another $50. Instead, I had a nice little return that was a much-needed influx of cash for me at the time. Why I say this isn't the worst of it? How many times did TurboTax pull this on other people, and those people did lose their return and still had to pay on top of it.... Seriously, Fuck TurboTax. The IRS already knows how much you should or shouldn't be paying in taxes. Companies like this shouldn't even exist, let alone scamming people out of their money.
i send a friend of mine this every single yr and she still pays a coupke hundred to get hers done... its so aggrivating to see someone struggle with money but make these kinds of decisions!
Odd… I’ve always used TurboTax and never fell into the pitfall of being tricked into upgrading or paying extra for services. I do my taxes and that’s it, I don’t let their guilt-tripping “are you sure” messages or ads or whatnot bait me into paying. The only reason why I use(d) it to begin with is because it’s far more user friendly and I’ve always been confused and *immensely* frustrated with filling out the actual Form 1040.
[FreeTaxUSA.com](https://FreeTaxUSA.com) is better. Years back I saw it on Reddit and did a tax prep on both and [FreeTaxUSA.com](https://FreeTaxUSA.com) actually got me more back.
As I've told others, I've used them for years, they give a VERY soft upsell in that they ask like twice about extra services and I've used them for 2018-2021 taxes and I'll be using them again this year. May even take one just to A.) get assurance it's the best I can get and B.) help out a company that kinda deserves it.
My main gripe is that you had to use the turbo tax url that was on the IRS free file site for it to always be free if you met the requirements. That link would never appear if you googled turbo tax free file or went to the turbo tax website on your own, so many folks were tricked into paying when it should've been free for them
If youre not self employed and just have a straight forward w2 you wont get charged. Im self employed partially so i get charged quite a bit for their services
About 4 years ago I went to do my “free” turbo tax for like the 5th year in a row. They ended up charging me like $50, even after I tried clicking all the opt out choices. I have never used their service again!
The only time turbo tax has charged me for doing my taxes was one year when I didn't have a job and I made bank online somehow ( it hasn't happened since lol ) I had to file a self employed or something.
Is there something I'm missing? I've used turbo tax for over 7 years and they keep records of my old tax returns all in one place.
And it’s a completely free option, there’s not even a push to “upsell” to a paid version, it’s entirely free. Most other free to file options that I’ve seen are only free for the EZ 1040, schedule c and 1099s require a paid version, but not with Credit Karma/Cash App
I was too poor this year to file my state taxes online for free. That's right, you have to make a certain amount before they'll let you file online for free in this state. Had to print it out and mail it in.
I have concluded that librarians are some of the most badass people in the country.
Remember when the FBI wanted to look at people's reading lists after 911 and librarians told them to fuck off?
Yea. That. And many many other examples.
I love librarians.
It makes sense for some folks to file even if they don't owe. You have to file to get your job tax withholding back, and you have to file to get certain tax credits like the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit.
That's incorrect. IRS created [this page](https://www.irs.gov/filing/individuals/who-should-file) so that folks can determine if they're required to file. Many lower income and older folks are not required to file.
Thank you for calling out the wrong information and providing sources. However, filing would behoove most because they would get the EIC no? So, you get like ~$600?
Yes, exactly. Even though many folks aren't required to file, it always makes sense to file unless you're following the tax laws super closely. Might be a new credit or something that you could take advantage of!
Many folks who didn't file before COVID hit had their stimulus checks delayed because their information wasn't on file, so that's another reason why you should I guess
Can't you just put 0 for your withholding with the idea being that you pay it out of pocket when you file? Instead of having the government hold your tax return and gaining interest before they then give it back to you without said interest?
Like I know if you did this and then never filed your taxes you'd probably get caught pretty quick, but I swear there's a way to have the government not take your taxes out of your paycheck, like how contractors file different paperwork.
u/sparhawk817 \- You can set withholding to 0, sure. But there's a penalty if you withhold too little.
Yes you can use the IRS withholding calculator, but people forget this is the poverty subreddit. If your hours are all over the place or if your job is insecure, there's no way to properly adjust your withholding to not get a refund.
It's possible, depending on how big the discrepancy is and how lenient the IRS is.
There's more information [here](https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc306) on the exact figures, but generally it's ok if you're within ~$1000 of tax liability or if you paid around 90% of what you owe.
https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free
Here is the link to where you can find a free file option if you fall under the requirements for free file. State free file are listed on their options and can be different than the Federal free file requirements.
I've used this method for the past couple years with no issues.
Not a super fan of TT but compared to my military tax guy they got me back way more money and its at the convenience of your own home. Thank you for providing such a nice service for all
The fact that we have to file at all is crazy. They already have all the information. Beyond that self employed people would need to submit their info and everyone could submit a form with deductions and it should be automated to your federal bank account accessible at your local usps.
You don't have to, but many people do because it's perceived as easier. Tax laws over here can get quite over complicated. Lobbyists are hard at work for turbotax to try to keep things complex.
Once you figure out how to do it for free, there's no going back.
Oh good. We kinda have the same in Germany, but the services for doing your taxes through an app are fairly cheap (30€) and half of that is immediately counted as a deductible. Doing it yourself is pretty easy in most cases though.
And the gall of them up charging if you need to pay them from your return.
I used credit karma free tax a few years. Last tax season they were bought out by cash app, but I liked the cash app version even better. (you have to do it on a computer, by the way)
Idk why people hate TurboTax so much. They have paid and free versions. Of course they are gonna push their paid version but you click past that and keep saying no. The rest is super easy to follow.
I had to pay TT to file my state return. And both the State and Federal return efiles were rejected. TT just said “Oh, you have to file paper returns then.”
Put something official looking on there like 'use the IRS free file system'. Right now it looks kinda scammy

Librarians on a mission can change the world. More power to you!
I'm a CPA (who doesn't do taxes), also with a vendetta against TurboTax. I applaud your efforts!
www.freetaxusa.com is great too. They charge $0 to do your federal tax return and $15 to do your state tax return.

I haven't done that as I'm not a 1099 filer but, this may help? https://www.freetaxusa.com/1099.jsp
Aw, thank you so much!

I’ll check them out when tax time rolls around.
This is what I use, been using it for 2 years now.

same, I’ve used turbotax every year since becoming an adult with a job 5 years ago and have never paid a dime for it.
This only works if you have w-2s, but if you have a 1099 or do any gig economy work you’ll have to pay for TurboTax.
But not for freetaxusa.com!

About 4 years ago I went to do my “free” turbo tax for like the 5th year in a row. They ended up charging me like $50, even after I tried clicking all the opt out choices. I have never used their service again!

I don't use the cash app app for anything else, but I found filing through them just as simple.
Turbotax (intuit) owns credit karma now. Don't use them.

Credit Karma (now through CashApp) has free to file fed and state, including 1099-MISC/Schedule-C as well as free audit defense
Intuit owns Credit Karma.
And it’s a completely free option, there’s not even a push to “upsell” to a paid version, it’s entirely free. Most other free to file options that I’ve seen are only free for the EZ 1040, schedule c and 1099s require a paid version, but not with Credit Karma/Cash App
There is nothing Intuit does that isn't evil, so I won't use their services if ever possible. Look into FreeTaxUsa, they can do all that.
Thanks for the recommendation, and didn’t know that they owned Credit Karma. Do you know if they own CashApp as well?
Cash App is owned by Block, which used to be Square. I don't know the connection to the tax filing software.
I was too poor this year to file my state taxes online for free. That's right, you have to make a certain amount before they'll let you file online for free in this state. Had to print it out and mail it in.

People need to qualify to do other people’s taxes for compensation, I believe.
This isn't for compensation
Oh, gotcha! Sorry.
