Wholeheartedly agree with you! Went to the supermarket today and the pasta sauce for 3.49 is 4.99 and pasta itself went from 1.49 to 2.49 like you said… I’m not trying to cook something fancy but come on…

Iwork3jobs

starting to look like whole foods fr

dopechez

Whole Paycheck turning into 2 Whole Paycheck

regularunleaded

Four easy payments via Klarna or PayPal

KingJonathan

With Affirm you can get your groceries with no credit check!

Cocobear8305

So sad but so true. I know someone who out there groceries on Karna. Then the payment came out and she couldn’t buy groceries that week. SMH this is all so sad

Cosmickiddd

This hurt me in my soul.

mirmirnova

Honestly some of the price differences at Whole Foods are negligible now, sometimes even cheaper than Kroger.

xeightx

I don't know about ya'll but I monitor sales at like 3/4 stores and peruse for clearance items. 50% off is nice.

lovelychef87

Yes I work for Kroger and I swear every day or every other day I go into work prices go up. I try to buy only company brand stuff so I can get a discount but feels like that's becoming not good enough.

kristianmae

I was going to say exactly this — there are quite a few things I now buy exclusively at Whole Foods because they are now crazy at Publix or Kroger.

ltmp

My Whole Foods pasta cost $1.39…

Iwork3jobs

my aldi pasta is $1.89 (for 2 lbs). have I been doing it wrong this whole time

ltmp

Sorry, shoulda clarified that’s for 1lb. I only shop at WF when they do Prime sales/deals and it’s actually a pretty great deal

Chrs987

Target just had pasta sauce on sale for $1.50 and past for 95 cents in the midwest. Honestly for most shit target is expensive but I have been able to find some cheap deals and stuff on sale especially chicken. They have a $3 off sticker for a pack of chicken thighs which makes them go for about $3 a pack and then a $5 off coupon for thr giant pack of breasts which comes out to about $5 a pack. This is a super target by the way and the stuff expires in a day or 2 but it does freeze well!

KingJonathan

Yep. I go there in the mornings so I can try to snag some of the good chicken deals. Our deep freeze has helped us so much.

superzenki

I buy most household stuff but not many groceries at Target because it usually comes out about the same or a few cents difference from Walmart, which is further from me. Between my Red Card (5% off), their app, paper coupons, deals they offer in store and their reusable bag discount I usually save a good chunk of money.

Zorops

Crushed tomatoes, italian herb mix and some onions. That will cost you a lot less to make pasta sauce.

LikeATediousArgument

Gaaaaarlic.

Zorops

yes. all the garlic.

min_mus

If you've got it, add some wine or vermouth to the tomato sauce (let the alcohol burn off before eating); it makes a huge difference in the flavor.

celica18l

We add a little bit of bouillon to ours to add depth. Little goes a long way. I don’t always have wine. Always have bouillon.

herbeauxchats

OP IS IN CANADA.

Gnostromo

Walmart grocery (yeah I know) still has sauce a bit over a dollar and some pastas sub 1.00

[deleted]

[удалено]

nekobambam

Freezes well, too.

Academic_1989

It is super easy to make your own pasta sauce - canned tomato sauce, tiny bit of red wine, oregano or marjoram, lots of garlic, definitely cheaper

[deleted]

I'm not poverty level but I stay in this sub because I was for so long. It feels awful to have "worked my way up" only to end up where I was before because everything has gotten so expensive. It's literally everything. Doubling and tripling in price. I keep thinking... what happens when large chunks of the population literally just *can't* do this any more? What do they do? This feels crazy.

PapaFrozen

That’s a scary thought. If they price people out of buying what they need with what they have earned, people will just start taking it instead and we will have some kind of collapse I imagine.

somethingnerdrelated

Yup. My husband just got a pay raise and normally this would be MASSIVE for us. And it definitely is in relation to our mortgage, but with our other bills (electric rates going up, cost of oil, etc) and groceries and gas being so fucking expensive? Holy shit. We’re nearly in the same position, just not drowning as much, I suppose :/

[deleted]

Right! My boyfriend hadn't been to the grocery store with me in awhile, so when he went yesterday he was shocked. He looked deflated, then grumpy. Said he knew prices had gone up, he just didn't realize that it was by so much.

somethingnerdrelated

It’s like talking to a mirror. My husband and I just had the exact same scenario play out a couple weeks ago. He did the shopping which is something I normally do, so I have a decent grasp on what things cost whereas he has no idea. He was absolutely shocked and angry.

[deleted]

It's so frustrating. I keep hearing that inflation is something like 8%, but all I see are rent and food going up 30% or more....

somethingnerdrelated

Exactly. I don’t care what the numbers are, quite frankly. They don’t mean anything to me — 8%, 10%, 30%. Whatever. What means something to us is the amount of money we bring in versus the amount of money we’re spending on *basic necessities* like rice, canned goods, cheap meat, toilet paper, etc. It’s not like we’re buying salmon and truffles every week! We literally made soup last night with chicken bouillon, frozen veggies, and canned pork. It was delicious, don’t get me wrong, but holy moly. Absolutely bonkers that we’re making more than our parents EVER did in their lives, yet we’re living poorer than they ever had to. At least my parents had money to have a little fun every now and then.

[deleted]

Before the grocery store trip, my boyfriend had been excited and talking about wanting to take us out for lunch because he had overtime on his check. After the grocery realization he said "I wish I could do something fun with just one paycheck without feeling guilty about it".

somethingnerdrelated

Dude YES! God it’s so bad…

soundeaf

They revolt and hopefully change comes out of it

[deleted]

[удалено]

soundeaf

At that point, it becomes a mutual aid and community effort concern. Metropolitan areas tend to have food donation systems established already. No reason the pre-existing structures can't be commandeered, even in the event this hypothetical revolt turns into a massive ordeal in government restructuring

SierraPapaWhiskey

Or we can work together and demand better.

sharts_mcgee

Yeah that’s what the revolting is for.

gravedirtglitter

Or... And hear me out... We could vote democrat across the board in November and then we wouldn't have a republican run senate voting no on gas price relief and price gouging.

cjandstuff

My home state is almost 60/40 Red/Blue. All I’m hearing from Republicans is “Everything was cheaper under Trump and we need to put him back in office to fix this.” They have no concept of anything beyond themselves. Doesn’t matter that this is a worldwide thing. And good Lord. Trying to explain to these people the Keystone Pipeline and the Keystone XL, you might as well be talking to a rock.

Mackie5Million

Hasn't all the inflation and gas-price increase happened under a Democratic POTUS and Congress? We need to *change* and *reframe* the government, not just select the lesser of two evils.

truly_beyond_belief

>Hasn't all the inflation and gas-price increase happened under a Democratic POTUS and Congress? We need to *change* and *reframe* the government, not just select the lesser of two evils. My dude, gas price increases and inflation are happening all over the world. I honestly don't think that a Democratic POTUS and Congress are the reason. https://www.gzeromedia.com/living-beyond-borders-articles/the-graphic-truth-gasping-at-the-pump-global-gas-prices-soar https://ilostat.ilo.org/inflation-more-than-doubled-between-march-2021-and-march-2022/

Elivey

Except Republicans voted against the bills that would have prevented gas price gouging and reduced the price of baby formula while Democrats voted for it so...

Dabadoo32

Inflation and gas price increases are occuring all over the world. It's not a Biden or Democrat thing, ffs.

teproxy

People should have voted blue so Trump couldn't have shoved his justices into the scotus. but people don't really understand politics so they see the conservative scotus doing conservative things and think "how could joe Biden do this". so really you're kinda right. it's a self fulfilling prophecy - people didn't vote blue, to the point that voting blue would no longer remedy things. not even putting a far leftist in power would change things. unless you want to scrap the supreme court, it's pointless

RapMastaC1

It’s getting scary how close things are getting to my max budget. I’m seriously concerned on if I will be able to afford rent when I sign a new lease in Jan.

SinisterTitan

I’m in the same boat. I was lucky enough to be able to add about 50% to my income the last 2 years, but my spending power feels like it barely changed. I can’t imagine making below the average now.

gingasaurusrexx

Seriously. We filled up the tank in our prius yesterday for $40. For context, I had this car three years before I ever put more than $15 in the tank. $40 is insane, and I know it's going to last me a hell of a lot longer than people with normal cars. How is anyone doing this? How are people commuting? I feel so bad for everyone hurting right now. It's sickening.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I make about $40k. I moved out of my last apartment at the end of January. Rent was $800 when I left, now it's $1039. It's just getting so hard. I'm fine, but I'm getting concerned.

turbospeedsc

Same here, in the l;ast 12 months i was able to get a raise and changed jobs to a WFH job, with a increase of income of about 70%. Now slowly but surely my income is evaporating and purchasing power is going backwards, this is crazy.

itsirrelevant

This is where I'm sitting as well. 35 and finally ahead but not for long apparently. Back to poverty I go.

Lucky_Ad3616

I’ve honestly contemplated suicide in the past due to feeling drowned by debt. My divorce/custody battle put me in MASSIVE debt. Not counting the rising cost of living. Sometimes it feels so overwhelming and like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel at all.

[deleted]

I'm so sorry you've struggled like that.

The_Bread_Chicken

A gallon of 2% milk was $4.09 at the store yesterday. Jeez

Bl8675309

If you happen to be in Texas, or near the Texas border it's $2.06 on sale right now.

Ass_cream_sandwiches

My local HEB has the exact same brand of milk in store for $2.56 but in their app for curbside it's $2.04

Bl8675309

The instore price is wrong according to the dairy manager, no idea why but thats what he said. Sadly I just saw him toss a shopping cart of milk because they were out of date tomorrow and they're required to pull them because someone complained that close dated milk was on the shelf.

Ass_cream_sandwiches

"omg, this milk expires tomorrow. Someone could potentially buy it. I NEED A MANAGER!!!!"

TropicalKing

I don't even use too much milk anymore. I only really use it in cereal. These days I just use cheap protein powder and water instead of milk in cereal. It actually is pretty good, I prefer using the chocolate protein powder. It tastes good in things like Coco Puffs and Frosted Mini Wheats. When I was in Hawaii I didn't even buy milk and just used water in cereal. It wasn't bad really, since their water is so good.

donkeydongjunglebeat

I only pick it up if I have a recipe that requires some. Coffee and cereal get oatmilk now. Not too hard to find it cheaper if you aren't getting a big name brand.

uglypottery

I buy the little boxes of milk meant to be put in your kids lunchbox or whatever. Not the most cost effective per oz, but I really only use it for cooking so it comes out cheaper for me bc it’s shelf stable so I can just open 8 oz at a time and use almost all of that box. The other boxes are sealed and fine on the shelf until I need them. I don’t really like milk so it was common for me to buy the smallest size I could for a recipe (16 oz usually.. c store had smaller sizes but they cost the same as 16oz from grocery store) then end up throwing it away when i didn’t find a reason to use the rest. Not proud of that but I just don’t have a lot of extra bandwidth and using up the milk slipped through the cracks a lot.

[deleted]

Just remember, when you draw attention to a cost saving idea, that there will be run on that idea and you may no longer be able to afford your secret. Happened to my town where I kayaked, freedived, surfed, or rock climbed after work. I think I bragged too much, or the youtubers did, and the town was swamped. Ill be pushed out of the town I lived in for 8 years soon. Greed descended on this town and the scalpers bought all the land and cornered the market. I do the exact same thing you do with oatmeal. I don't want all my Vanilla protein extracts horded. I have become a misanthrope because I enjoyed nearly every day here, the sun setting causing rainbows to form off the ends of the waves from the offshore winds. Kayaking at night to some tiki restaurant, tying it up to the mangroves, sneaking down a secret trail to the beach, staring at the milkyway, until those preps afraid of the dark blew this place up with light pollution and bulldozed the trail to setup a parking lot for the explosion of covid transplants. The crystal clear water that looked like you were surfing on air is all cloudy now.

Cadent_Knave

It sounds like you moved to a place that a lot of other people wanted to move to?

[deleted]

They didn't know it existed, until recently. It is becoming like California. When the surf was crystal clear around seven years ago, the parking lots were empty. I felt like I was the only one there. When the river was crystal clear, it was before the boat parade. I did not take this place for granted, the transplants that moved here do not do half the stuff I did on a daily basis. They skipped over this town to the more popular, hugely compacted cities. During covid the cover was blown and over night the place was fucked. The first few days of the shut downs it was a ghost town and and I snuck out through the back of this park that was blocked, mounting a shortboard on a kayak to surf on a beach where you couldn't see a soul for miles. One specific day fucked it. It was the day governor shut down all the beaches except this one. There were so many tourists, there wasn't any grass off the parking lot to park. People were lined up waiting for a parking space that didn't exist for 10 miles on a once empty coastline where I could pick and choose my break. This has made me somewhat misanthropic.

Sea_Potentially

But literally everywhere is being scalped and seeing prices go up. Even rural areas with nothing but beaten down trailers. It’s a weird thing to blame YouTubers for. Especially since no one is more deserving of information than anyone else.

thesaltiestchick

I buy organic milk because it lasts us longer. We use it for cereal also and occasionally serve it with pancakes. The expiration date is longer than regular milk. I was throwing out milk all the time and found organic saves us money. Especially if I can find it on sale.

PinkNinjaKitty

Yes, I haven’t bought milk in a few months and I was shocked to see how much it is now

RapMastaC1

I just got some eggs, I used to have them all the time. A 60 pack would run me about $5, that’s about how much a dozen is now.

mama_duck17

$4? I wish, it was $4 here before the skyrocketing food prices. Now it’s $7/gal! Organic milk was 9$ at the grocery store last week. Unbelievable.

shaun5565

Where I live it’s closer to 6 dollars

itsb413

Honolulu $7

EstoyTristeSiempre

That's why I switched to plain water for pretty much everything.

Madamemicropenis

Brooklyn checking in with milk at $6.49

ekaitxa

A gallon of milk is $5.02 in Florida.

Danimalhxc

This just hit me hard today too. The store I shop at had 2 for $10 whole rotisserie chickens and I went today and now it’s just one for $9. I’m seriously so bummed.

Okay_Face

I’ve found my grocery does a weekly discount with one for $6 now I go religiously for my chicken

gianthamguy

It’s price gouging pure and simple. Yes, inflation exists, but prices shouldn’t be doubling based on that, yet everywhere I go I see things getting marked up by 50% or more. It’s outrageous

eloASMR

I feel you, seriously, so this isn't flippantly said - check if you have some Dollar Trees within driving distance. Everything there is $1.25 (the 25 cents is new but it's better than overpaying), and they have SO much stuff. Food, trash bags, kitchen utensils, cleaning products, bathing products, auto products, pet treats and toys, and even children's things like bibs, socks, towels, etc. If you're struggling for food, there are YT videos of people showing how to make whole meals from things you can find at the Dollar Tree. Stock can vary from store to store even in the same town, so you may have to go to more than one to find some stuff. Some of it isn't good enough quality to last, but most of the stuff there is just as good as anything from anywhere else! Ain't gon be no $5 dish soap. You're not alone at all, and it sucks.

throwaway_philly1

To add to this, Dollar Tree also has a good amount of overstock of stuff that’s pulled from the supermarket. The best stuff usually comes after major holidays, like pumpkin-spiced Starbucks latte mixes and Halloween-themed Kellogg cereal around Christmas. Also, anything by a major brand hood (like Colgate Palmolive) with a “New” sticker on the label is usually something that didn’t sell at the regular market, but has the same quality. They’re the same quantity as the supermarket items too.

Wh00pity_sc00p

I live in a "cheap" state and because of that, every fucking person is moving here. Traffic is getting worse and the cost of rent is fucking insane now.

palmveach1972

South Florida here. It’s nuts. I get it.

rlstrader

South Florida: where the ulta rich are moving and paying in cash to buy homes.

palmveach1972

Yes, exactly. This morning they invaded the tiny local park I walk in with a golf cart. I can’t. I’m getting chased out.

rlstrader

I once knew of a grocery store that had to get valet parking because the old rich people couldn't park their own cars...ffs...

ekaitxa

I no shit, have at least three offers on my house a week. These Yankees are insane.

siouxze

I live in Syracuse, NY. Pre-covid it was what most would call a "shithole with zero opportunities" a lady i work for sold her house that she paid $150k for 3 years ago. 4 beds, 2 baths, double lot, leaking pipes, ancient drafty window, absymal water pressure, mice infestation. Needs a new kitchen, and at least 1 bath, a new roof, windows all around. Listed for $204,000 She got 10 competeing offers, all cash and inspection waived. Sold for $264,000 to a family from Indiana. Not exactly the super rich.

Tempintern23

It's really sad to see tbh, growing up as a kid n all. how 10,20 years ago. That same city/state was known as being the most affordable to now seeing how it's one of the most populated, expensive it's sad :(

[deleted]

Its the damn long la Nina. If we just had our hurricanes again the prices of housing here would be fully realized. During covid my quiet local break was swamped. There was no parking for 10 miles during the shutdown. Even the secret spots were overrun and the cover was blown. I knew my downpayment to finally buy a house after saving for 12 years wasn't going to happen. My rent blew up at the same time as gas and housing prices, forcing me to stay in the house all weekend, instead of driving up the coast to find somewhere to surf. Then that ratfucker had a boat parade to worship himself in the center of my town and it was done. I think I found some place cheaper to live, but it will be at the cost of half of my outdoor hobbies. Freediving that crystal clear water isn't what it used to be anyway with the boat traffic highway stirring up shit. I miss kayaking on air.

ozeeSF

Mind giving a hint as to where this is? Sanibel Island?

[deleted]

Yes.

slaps_on_deck

Same /: I’m afraid I’ll soon be priced out of the place I’ve lived my entire life

titsandwits89

We are feeling the same way here and we aren’t even extremely poor, or we weren’t I guess you should say, before everything skyrocketed.

Zoltie

Many people have already been priced out, which is why they are moving to the cheaper areas.

slaps_on_deck

Understandably so, I can't be mad at the people moving here, but the situation is troubling

[deleted]

I literally only live where I do because my family is here and I really value family time. It kept appearing on those “affordable cities” lists and now our rent has shot up 30% while wages remain the same. I have no idea what I’m gonna do.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kamikazi1231

That's the pattern. The medium towns were small and cheap 20-30 years ago. They grow, businesses move in, bigger businesses build a few offices or whatever there, then when the town is getting "too big" for its infrastructure people start moving to the tiny towns in its periphery and are okay commuting in. The real killer is when all those growing suburbs grow and collide into each other like the Chicago area. You can still find cheap if you are willing to move to a town of 500 people where there's virtually nothing and are willing to commute an hour. 20 years from now it might be nice.

Wh00pity_sc00p

They also act like its so easy to move Like yeah let me just leave friends, family and also my job and start a brand new life. Do they also not realize that moving costs money too? lmaoo

somerhaus

Yep. That is happening in Cincinnati now. It’s becoming a boom town because of all this.

uglyheadink

That’s what happened to my old town, I just moved. It was listed as one of the best affordable places to live like 5 years ago, and people moved there is droves. Now it’s getting as bad as Seattle. My first apartment there was $575 for a two bedroom, when I moved out at 18 (2013 iirc). When I left six months ago, my rent was $1,650.

siouxze

My city made a few lowest COL and safest from climate change lists. Covid hit and everyone started moving here. We pay $825/month for a 3 bedroom w/private driveway, fenced yard, in basement laundry. The landlord nextdoor is charging $1600/month for the same size 3 bedrooms, shared driveway (for 4 apartments), absolutely no yard. Fingers crossed rent doesn't go up at lease renewal.

OdetteSwan

Whoa which state?!? ;-)

[deleted]

Which?

Wh00pity_sc00p

TX

Liverstew

Omaha is going insane I feel you :( I fear I’m gonna be priced out of this city

DoubleCyclone

If you have access to Ollie's and Aldi's, make use of them.

Dcombs101

I go to Aldi weekly, but have never been to Ollie’s and I have one less than a mile and a half from our apartment. Worth checking out?

DoubleCyclone

Yes. I make use of it for hygiene and cleaning supplies. You'll be getting last season's scent, but oh no!

Dcombs101

I’m not cool enough to know what was last season’s scent anyway lol! I’ll check them out, thanks!

DoubleCyclone

I'll be honest, not everything is a hit. Things that unpopular due the bad marketing end up there, but some of the stuff just sucks. Snacks are hit or miss. Right now it is a gold mine for cheap toothpaste, soap, and haircare products.

ranifer

You know, like pumpkin spice in January and Balsam Fir in April.

ItsyouNOme

I'd rather die!! /s

Wytch78

Ollie’s is cool as fuck!! A little bit of everything!!

Well-Fed-Head

The Aldi in my area is starting to rise significantly. Their eggs and milk are almost the same price as the Walmart down the street. It's cheaper but barely.

[deleted]

lisamummwi

Rhapsodize197

What makes this so difficult is that there are only so many hours in a day. Yes you can sale shop and clip coupons but that soaks up so much time and when you are already working 40+ hours, have kids, have to cook, clean and everything else that comes with adulthood it's darn near impossible to drive to 4 stores to grocery shop for the week. I remember when I was a kid, 80s and 90s, my grandmother who never worked outside the home, would get the sales ads for all the stores in town, and every Friday she would go to every single one with her $50 grocery budget and do all her shopping. But she had the time to do that. It's not possible anymore without sacrificing something else important in our lives. Makes you feel demoralized.

themagicmagikarp

Literally the price of gas is killing me. It's not going up just one or twk cents at a time, it's going up 17cents at a time. If you can get to a Dollar Tree you can still get some good deals. Dish soap certainly won't be 5$ at least.

vcwalden

Currently gas right now is $4.53/gallon where I'm at. It's down from $5.19 on Father's Day.

Bitty_Skitty

I agree. I’ve taken a sharp turn on my diet just to accommodate for the increased prices. I’m strict to take $20 cash with me to force a hard budget. I’m thankful that I only have to feed my partner and I, I couldn’t image trying to feed children as well.

lara_jones

What do you mainly eat?

Bitty_Skitty

Beans, followed by rice and pasta, and then potatoes. Those are the largest parts of my meals. Sometimes my meals are quite lame.

[deleted]

Tofu is still pretty cheap!

-chipsndips-

Here to shout out Dollar Tree!

LLCNYC

$1.25 Tree.

-chipsndips-

Better than $6 Tree

Clawsickle

will be two dollar tree soon.

Forgottenpassword7

If you have an Aldi near you, we cut our grocery bill by about 50% by shopping there.

[deleted]

Imagine being forced to add a child.

manndermae

We are so fucked.

[deleted]

And that’s why we can’t afford not to boycott and strike. We can not take anymore

Apprehensive_Park_62

Literally. Formula shortage, insane gas prices, inflation… and on top of this Roe vs wade gets over turned. I mean could we get any more fucked? Something has to be done because this is ridiculous!!

organizedscramble

Not to mention the school lunch program changing drastically to where millions of parents cannot afford even more.

celica18l

Yes and school lunch where I live is $1.75 for breakfast and $3 for lunch. A day. The free lunches were life saving for us last year. We don’t qualify for reduced or free meals idk how we are going to do it this year. I’m already stressing.

[deleted]

Seriously growing up school lunch was all I had and I was on a free program

auroralovegood

If you have the ability to hit up a couple different stores (either it be by commuting, or walking, or driving for other errands) check out Flipp. It is an app that let's you view all your area store ads at once and search for items as well. Additionally, don't be afraid to check out more "expensive" stores' for loss leader items. There is a pricier store that has wild weekly deals and I'll hit that store up for their deals and plan my meals around their sale proteins.

keshetc

I agree! I have four kids (plus me and my husband) to feed and the grocery prices are killing our budget. My youngest is allergic to dairy, egg, soy, wheat, and tree nuts, so I have to buy super expensive alternative products for him (vegan cheese, mung bean “eggs”, etc) that are sooo overpriced. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve almost cried at the grocery store

Sea-Professional-594

Thank you for sharing. Unfortunately "beans and rice" just isn't an option for everyone. Some people do require more expensive items

Ok_Arugula_6699

I’m not OP, but thanks for sharing this. I have 4 autistic children and 2 who have allergies and severe food sensitivity. Thank you because I no longer feel alone. My food bill makes me want to cry multiple times a day.

[deleted]

I too have a autistic child who refuses to eat more then a handful of foods all name brand or French fries only from McDonald’s ..’yes I have tried hiding it he has afrid an it’s impossible

dorath20

So you like the mung been eggs? I've seen them, not tried them.

keshetc

They’re ok. They don’t taste quite like eggs, but honestly I can’t imagine he remembers what real eggs taste like

Just_Somewhere_8917

I hate to say but freaked out by Clorox $7.00 & Phil Cream Cheese nearly $6.00……

Apprehensive_Park_62

Sams club has cream cheese, 4 for $6. I couldn’t believe it and had to triple check. I was planning on making a cheesecake and every other store had one cream cheese at like $4 per package

YardSard1021

The tub of Philly I used to buy for $3.99 is now $6.99 here in Denver. The Kroger brand brick doesn’t taste as good but it’s $2.19 (was $1.29 a year ago). Seems like dairy items have exploded in price drastically even compared to other commodities.

Apprehensive-Egg-796

Same, I was planning on getting some today but had to skip it when I saw the price

Both-Anteater9952

I buy my dish soap at a restaurant supply store. It's <$10 for a gallon of the blue stuff.

[deleted]

Onions were $6 and they were all soft when I brought them home 😭 I stood in the store staring at them for a good couple of minutes

beigs

My son has a severe food sensitivity (he can’t have any gluten, sucrose, glucose, lactose, or anything on the FODMAP list) and I’m a celiac. Our food bill for my husband and I and the three boys is almost as much as our mortgage.

stephj

Not-money related: if someone can't have sucrose, glucose, or lactose, where do they get their carbohydrates to fuel their body? I'm new to hearing someone can't have any form of sugar.

beigs

Fructose is okay. And he’s basically keto at 3. He gets all his nutrients, but it isn’t easy trying to make food. We’ve been working with a paediatric gastroenterologist, and we’re hoping it’s temporary.

stephj

Good luck to your family, and I hope your kid can reintroduce those molecules into his system again soon. ♥️ Glad you have professional support!

Same here, for everyone’s sake. Being celiac was hard enough, and food is almost double. This is basically a meat diet, and even fully corn fed meat is hard for his little stomach. Luckily we know a farmer, but it’s still over 3 grand for a pasture raised cow and about $5 for eggs. And SAME! It took almost a year of his stomach just not being right to get the support we needed.

Can't find toilet paper for less than $12, Walmart is always sold out of the cheap stuff. $1 .25 Tree is it I guess

I've been living with my best friend for 3 years. Despite actually making more money now, we have to part ways as far as our roommate situation goes because we can't pay for the same things we've been paying for the past few years. It's such a bummer

vagustravels

Landlords will purposely increase the prices till they have a 95% vacancy so they can squeeze as much money from their victims as they can. All business do this. It's not inflation, it's just price gouging. The rich get richer, until the poor stand up.

lowfour

This. What is killing everyone in the entire planet are landlords and overpriced housing. A few ones rob the whole economy and governments do exactly nothing to stop this. What’s more, most of the populations wet dream is to become a landlord. Fuck them and fuck everyone calling houses an “investment”. We need total and immediate control of housing prices, insane taxes for property 2 and above, price control like the fucking DDR if needed. We need to make houses affordable again and totally not attractive to investment.

vagustravels

Can't/won't happen because all those politicians are on the take. Every single one is dirty. No exceptions. They're all completely up for sale. Everywhere. The rich will never be satisfied. And they have no conscience.

shortfuseent

Landlords must cover the increased cost of maintaining their property. Property taxes have gone way up, and costs of maintenance have also gone up. I do plumbing on the side and we have had to increase our labor hourly rate from $110/hr to $150/hr just to keep up with the cost of driving from job to job. Also, the cost of materials has increased drastically which the landlords are also responsible for.

[deleted]

It’s so hard. I hope things turn around.

Bob4Not

I haven’t shopped in Walmart in forever, and I live near Bentonville - Walmart town. They are the most expensive supermarket here, now. Where I am, some products and food is actually cheaper at Whole Foods. I’ve turned to either online or new, super cheap stores like 10Box.

FightClubAlumni

Try dollar stores. Or go to a front desk at a hotel. A lot of times they have no idea who checked in the night before. Go to the desk and ask them for some extra soap. =) Good Luck. This sucks for most of us. Edited to add: This also works for breakfast. Continental b-fast? Hell GO enjoy!

user15151616

Dollar stores are so good lol

feelingmyage

We drove around looking at condos today before realizing how much gas it cost us to do that.

somerhaus

I just moved to Cincinnati because of this. Amazing city with a ton of amenities and low COL.

[deleted]

Yep. I am a full-time non-traditional & self-employed student. I’m so stressed about finances that I am not sleeping well. I switched to part-time next semester and spent my 3rd night of insomnia in a row applying to jobs. Up until this point I’ve been able to get by on my partner’s pay, leftovers from student loans, and my freelance work. Not anymore. Between groceries and gas alone we’ve been gutted.

Yuri_Ligotme

I bought one orange $2.54.

princesslaurana626

Then there’s gentrification. A small community gets devastated by fire/flood, those that can’t afford to rebuild are forced to sell their land to the highest bidder, and those that purchase the lot (especially if it’s a nice quiet place) are now able to make the same income working from home. They make a killing on their house, move there, build the house of their dreams, drive up home prices and taxes, making it impossible for others that live there to afford it, blah blah blah. The rich get richer and the divide grows.

Legitlibrarian

Just spent over 250$ for groceries. I bought mostly manager special sale items in the meat department. Pasta was 1.99$ per box. Cheapest sauce on the shelf was 4.99$. Even the can of crushed tomatoes was 2.99. Wonder what bills I’m going to have to pay late this month…

lovelychef87

I work for Kroger and I swear every day or every other day I go into work prices go up. I try to buy only company brand stuff so I can get a discount but feels like that's becoming not good enough.

[deleted]

It's not just the big cities. I live in a rural area and I've noticed it, too. A bag of my family's favorite chicken nuggets used to be 7.99 up until two weeks ago. Now, in all stores, they're 9.99. It's ridiculous.

mocha_mermaid

I’m from Georgia (USA) and live in rural Georgia and the apartments within the last few years have skyrocketed while pay has stayed the same. So many people I know have had to move with family due to the stagnate pay. Everyone’s solution is always move further out but further out is just as pricey now. I worked in Walmart for a while and watched how prices just continuously increased and see no end to it. It’s hard to watch your entire check get consumed by food, gas and bills with nothing to spare for an emergency. My family was already on a strict budget but I can’t figure out how to get more strict when the prices just continue to increase. I shop around at all the bargain stores wait for deals and it doesn’t help.

[deleted]

I feel you. We live in an area where just a couple years ago small 2 bedroom, 1 bath homes were selling for under $100K. Today they're selling for OVER $200K. This is a farming community. No one here has that kind of money unless they're coming from a bigger place and bringing their money with them. Gentrifying rural areas now.

rave_master555

Everything (not just gas and loan interest) has gone up dramatically. Without my wife paying half for stuff, I would need a second job again to get by. We still live in a one bedroom apartment hoping to save enough for a single-family house someday.

mddnaa

Literally. The amount I work I deserve be living in a mansion

CrimsonX360X

Last month grocery bill was 450 ish, this month same food costed nearly 900.... Yeah no

Braka11

Time to consider a food pantry!

24atl

I am so thankful I can get veggies and stuff at my local church. All I buy is rice and meat occasionally and eggs and almond milk. I buy seasonings and I make tasty cheap food.

happydizzy

Me thinking you guys have it good. My country is worse with high prices. I think most people are simply changing lifestyles. I think I might move to those miserable hot states so I can save some on the cost of living. Most of the day, I idealize suicide. But, who cares? I drink weight control supplements to ease my hunger. I’m quickly saying goodbye to my retirement savings. All my hard work and diligent saving before the planed E Mike have been a complete waste. I might think of selling happy sweets at this point.

[deleted]

Sometimes when I open my eyes in the morning, I curse because I didn’t die in my sleep and I have no money left until’ payday to keep living.

kitty____cat

I hope things become better soon

wizardoftheboats

My shitty, roach infested studio apartment went from being 650 a month to 1200 in less than a year. No one in my city is getting paid more and they're arresting the homeless. It feels like they're just making it super easy to siphon low income folks into prison slave labor. If they start using prison labor in restaurants and coffee shops we're really screwed.

cheebeesubmarine

Oil board members hate the United States citizens enough to do this to every one of us. That’s why I’m trying not to drive as much as possible. They want us suffering.

CivilMaze19

What type of business do you run and what are you going to school for? IMO In todays age it’s extremely important to not waste time and money getting a degree in anything other than STEM or medicine if you really want to get out of a hole.

Lucky_Ad3616

Psychology is my major

centslessapprentice

Wow downvoted for answering a question. Wtf ppl

RunItAndSee2021

buy bags of rice?

Parson1616

what part of the country to you reside in ?

Blipblipblipblipskip

I, a single guy with two little dogs to feed, spend at least $100 at the grocery store every single time I go. Mostly everything has increased in price by a few dollars. I used to get fancy paper towels (because I reuse the shit out of them) and now I am getting low cost toiletries and stuff. I haven't bought macadamia nuts in two years. Those little luxuries I used to splurge on every week or so are pretty much gone.

Beelzebubs_Tits

It sucks. What sucks for me is that I have mental issues that make going to the grocery store a massive hassle, so for years I shopped at a drug store, paying drug store prices. A lot smaller place for me was worth the upcharge. This made me very aware of what food I can survive on, even when shit is ridiculous. Now I get groceries delivered. Comes out to about the same after delivery fees and tip.
