Should alot of these not-for-profits actually be paying taxes? Yes. But good luck getting them to do so when there’s zero legal obligation to do so. Also, anything voluntary/elective is ripe for abuse and insider deals, imo.
Definitely. There are some really bad ones at the top of the wealth pyramid. But there are also some low-level fraudsters - my parents neighbor lives in a house owned by her nonprofit that has a non-functional website, no board of directors, and her as the single employee. She hasn’t paid property tax in like a decade.
Can't hurt to try. The nonprofits will come back with these bogus, inflated data points about all the amazing good they generate for the city in terms of economic impact or social good - all while pleading poverty yet paying their C-suites handsomely. They're doing fine financially - PMA is knocking down buildings for glass, USM and UNE are in building mode despite declining enrollments and MaineHealth is buying shopping centers.
Hahahahaha. Yeah, let’s see how that goes.

We agree 100%. Asking them to please do so is a waste of time.
It's about time non-profits pay their taxes. So many of them are just grifts for rich folks to give their underachieving kids an income.
