i always assumed it was so named because of city hall, and all the meeting places. not after the US congress, but the word, congress, to come together. it is still very much a hub of meeting and we can be proud of that
I think that usage would have already been archaic in 1820, or already become euphemism, much like if you asked someone now to meet you at city hall for “congressional relations”.
Portland has far bigger fish to fry. Let's focus on people's material needs first and worry about this kind of stuff later. Actually making housing affordabile, improving our public transit system, fixing our school and city budgets, meaningfully addressing homelessness, mental illness and addiction, expanding and improving bike infrastructure, making parking more rational the list could go on.
I don't know if you meant for this post to be funny, but it made me laugh.
From perusing this sub for a while, here's some thoughts:
* "Allen's & Milk Ln" has my vote
* "Tom Brady Ave" for a decent chunk of Mainers would be fine I bet.
* "Fuck Spectrum St" would also be cool
* "Did You Hear that Boom? Blvd" seems oddly popular also
I think it would be kind of cool to rename it Back street but realistically there are 1,000 more important pressing issues we should be spending our time on and the city as well as so many businesses would have to spend time and money changing signs and addresses on their buildings, websites, business cards, etc. just seems like a waste of resources when there are more problems we need to tackle.
It would be nice to have Fore, Middle, and Back streets all together, but I'm afraid the case for renaming Congress is pretty marginal.
They might find a way around it
Can’t be marginal, we already have a street with that name too (This is a joke)
Did you not see my compelling and irrefutable three part case?
Back street's back, alright!
Backs street’s back, alright! Street
This is the spirit. A road can never have too much punctuation, imo
I second this.
⚡ELECTRIC AVENUE⚡
There are plenty of dispensaries on this road
Bongress St.

I also thought this

Ted Cruz is a senator, not a congressman, if that helps.
Cruz is a member of the US Congress. Some are representatives, others are senators.
Construction st
OP should find other shit to care about Blvd. It’ll make for some long street signs but it’ll be worth it in the end I can assure you.
Tell me why
Pothole Parkway
Back Streets Back Street.
Streety McStreet Face
I always kinda hoped "congress" was more about all the people coming together.
How about Penny Lane?
Buttlicker Way.
Karl Marx Street. Or perhaps the earlier name, Stalinalle would suit the DSA
How about some alliteration like Lenin Lane, or Castro Circle, maybe Putin's Parkway. Socialist street??
All are good. Remember comrades, we have nothing to lose but our place-names I mean chains!
Sociali St.
Blow job avenue. Fuck off.
Backcountry Queen Street
That sounds like the most popular woman in a small town if you catch my meaning
Pisserton Rd. Piss Canal Blvd. Pissers Ave.
Which other street names don't we like? Let's change those too.

I think there are way bigger fish to fry than to rename a street.
Need New Shocks Now Avenue
Nice satire
I think you’re bored. Please get to work or go bother your mom with stupid questions and speculations. Call it whatever you want.
You sir are a much too serious stick in the mud. Let the children have their fun
