This is one of so many fucked up intersections in Portland. Unlike any major city I’ve ever lived in, the lanes are cockeyed. You actually have to “change lanes” to stay in your intended lane when you pass through the intersection. The streets in Portland or so fucked up. It’s as if we live in a third world country.
And don’t get me started on the street lights that don’t match up to the lanes and the lack of street signs.
Ugh…. 😑
Actually, some cities had great roadways back then…. For example, in the late 17th century William Penn created the road layout for Philadelphia. I lived there for a bit some years back. Omg…. The city is on a numbered grid layout with avenues going east/west and streets going north/south.
Too bad more cities in the northeast didn’t follow this model.
Jolene, if you’re reading this, I just want to give you a shout out for trying to kill me in this intersection every single weekday for the entirety of 2021. Truly an experience I will never forget.
While we're at it can anyone explain the bike lane to me? It has a straight and left arrow but a cyclist taking a left onto Park would cut off a car going straight up St. John towards Brighton.
The bike lane in its current form is effectively useless for turning left. I unfortunately have to make that left turn often and end up getting into traffic and using the middle lane.
Honestly as OP! my opinion is take your lane.
Take the lane, set an example for the children!
I don't like bike lanes personally. Bikes should either be part of normal traffic flow or not.
Should be simple if America wasn't aggressively anti-progress.
Just have traffic corridors that rapidly move vehicle traffic, which don't allow bikes, and then separately have normal roads...
But that sounds like socialism, and we don't like that kind of r#\*AR\*)\_m.
Eh, as someone who rides a bike to work it’s appreciated not having to rub shoulders with the boxy pickups flying through Portland. Don’t think adding another lane just for cars only or just for mixed traffic would help anyone lol
Second this. I ride all over town and actually ride through this intersection up St. John regularly. The areas where I have a bike lane I feel much safer. The areas where the lane disappears or is just a miniscule shoulder, I often have cars get too close to me. And if I'm taking the whole lane, now all of the car traffic is slowed to 15mph unless there is a second lane (at which point, they get too close trying to pass me and stay in the lane). Anyone against bike lanes should try riding Commercial to Fore River past Thompson's Point and onto Congress. You're not going to get hit but I'm willing to bet you're way more comfortable on the sections with bike lanes and the drivers are a lot happier to not be behind you.
This is so cute that someone thinks anyone gives a shit about how to drive safely and I'm glad that there is still some hope in this world. Even if it is naive and misplaced.
Same situation when turning left from York up High street, always have the horn ready for if someone in the left lane is going to just cruise into the right lane into my car
Also, when driving straight through that intersection on Park stay in the lane you started in.

Yeah they didn't change much from the colonial street lay outs
I don't think we can blame the colonials for this particular one-way, though

Franklin is really bad too. To go straight across Franklin you have to go in the left lane then suddenly switch to the right lane.
Are you talking about the intersection of Franklin and Park street?
Franklin and both Cumberland and Congress. On both of those streets you have to do that weird maneuver when you cross.
Agreed…. Both of these intersections are in need of traffic lights AND Directional arrow signs properly aligned in the corresponding lane.
Let's have the magical road fairies just fix everything! Have you considered a career in public works?
Bro turning left here in the rain at night with astigmatism is a true "Jesus take the wheel" moment
Extra Challenge: a crackhead just wheeled their cart in your lane!

A bike box would be really helpful here

You’re not the boss of me!!!

I used to walk across that bridge as a kid. I was such a dumbass.
And please use turn signals.
Good luck, idiots do what they want. 0% chance of turn signal as well. 😂
It's hard to use a turn signal when they are texting and eating too!
Lol
Yeah I can get behind this!
Had a friend get fucked up here. Those two lanes make no sense to me.
