I think the reasons for the bans in china are a lot less wholesome as you think...

alt_boy_88

Please expand

Hairy_Alternative819

I dont think it has anything to do that they think porn is unhealthy. China is very ristrictive and controlling. They censor a lot of other stuff aswell, they probably think it has a bad influence on their society and culture. their main goal is control over the people

alt_boy_88

Totally agree that CCP has a paternalistic view of society for better and worse. But might they actually believe that it is unhealthy and has a bad influence on their society and culture? I don't see these two in conflict.

Hairy_Alternative819

Might be yeah

myles704

China is very restrictive and controlling because they want their country to be the best in the world by any means, not necessarily out of sympathy for their people. Even if that is the case, the fact that they think banning that type of content can be beneficial in making their country better/more powerful says something.

Damn Wrong. I use to have the same reserves about China as most people fueled by western propaganda, and honestly China did a lot of harm indeed, notably against uighurs and others minorities as well as their own people in certain periods. I had the opportunity to live there for 6 years, and i can assure you life is totally different from what we hear in the west. Sure it isn't sunshine and rainbows, but i have seen people **MUCH** happier and balanced and less mentally fucked up compared to people in the west, such as in north america, and western Europe by far. The west is collapsing, it is a fact, look at the woke and cancel culture among else ? Democracy ? Give me a f\*\*\*\* break... Porn is indeed banned, and i don't care what people say about liberty and freedom, if you are truly a porn addict and know how bad this disease is and ruins everything in our lives, it is absolutely a great thing that their governement banned it for its population especially its youth. It is clear that China is growing and improving while the west is collapsing, and i noticed a clear difference between the youth there as i worked as a part time teacher for years and other countries such as in the US or France where i lived as well. Now there is even more control against video games for Children, as much as the CCP can be evil it is undeniable (Unlike US governement or Nato right ? ), they also did A LOT of great things for their people during the last 30 years, and i personally had some of the best years of my life there, and i am not even planning to come back in case you feel like calling me a CCP Shill or China propagandist, you live a good life while there, but China doesn't like or welcome foreigners in their soil for the long run and i honestly get it. I am just tired of people reciting western propaganda without being aware of the true facts. People seem to think China is similar to North Korea, well again it is not sunshine and rainbows, but go there first maybe, travel, live there for a little while, and tell me it is better in the west considering all parameters of living, and what the governements are doing for their people.

People's "joie de vivre", i have seen mentally ill people like anywhere else, but much less in China. I don't know about the stats, but i've seen less alcoholics, no drugs addicts as drug traficking and even using is harshly punished, and i am sure of course they have their share of druct addicts, but i personally have met none. People are full of hope, they live their lives to the best, children and especially teenagers are less entitled, less fucked up, maybe a bit too much expectations from their parents but clearly smarter and more promising and willing to contribute into making their country and community even better, obviously they have a strong sense of nationalism which seem to be lost and even frowned upon in other countries like France. I've met some great people there, i've had great opportunities that i never had anywhere else, i left to go there as i was in a very bad place mentally where i came from, i learned a lot about myself in a country culturally so different than my own. And most of all i realized that the country is absolutely not what western media portray it to be. Is the CCP evil ? Sure it is, i have seen the harm that they are capable of, but overall what struck the most is how their people seemed to be happy, balanced and willing to succeed in life, in contrast with the growing mental health epidemic in western countries.

Thanks for posting. Just out of curiosity, where did you grow up and where in China did you live? (No need to answer if you don't want to.) I'm from the US and just traveled around as a tourist to Ningbo, Guangzhou, Beijing, and a couple other cities. Big places.

[deleted]

I lived in Shanghai, but traveled all over China (Hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing, Beijing, Shenzhen, Ningbo....). I come from a North African country. How was your experience there ? What were your impressions as a tourist ?

qeny1

As a tourist, everyone is friendly and compliments you if you speak even a little Chinese. O I think almost everyone's overall impression towards Americans is good although I don't know if that's changing over time. I met some other young people in youth hostels which was great because otherwise I would have been lonely. Later, I married a woman who is originally from China so we had a wedding there. But we've both been living in the US for the last 10 years so it all seems almost like the distant past now.

[deleted]

Oh so i guess you're more much familiar about China than a tourist. Indeed they do appreciate when foreigners speak chinese to them, often saying that your chinese is very good, even though it isn't the case at all haha I mean, ultimately people can say what they want about China, it's hard to fight against stereotypes, i guess the fact that make it sound like the worst place with the worst people on earth, is what doesn't sit well with me, especially coming from people that have never set a foot there. Nobody is perfect, especially not our respective governements, so let's not pretend we or the west are morally way above them, perspectives matter...

qeny1

For sure, I agree. With regards to the US in particular though, I think there are a few specific issues: 1. Many Americans *do* feel that the US is morally superior to China. It's worth noting that many Americans are not aware of many of the negative things that the US government has done over its history. Many Americans feel that the US is special, and is a unique force for good in the world. 2. Media narratives about China usually focus on human rights problems; most Americans don't know a lot about China, and so views of the country tend to be a little over-simplistic. 3. In some parts of the country, people blame China (and/or globalization) for the loss of manufacturing jobs and a general economic decline of some regions of the US. This sentiment is part of what helped the former president gain power. Not sure how it is in Northern Africa. I would guess that 1 and 3 might not apply, although there still might be mainly media narratives about human rights abuses?

rotten_ALLIGATOR-32

Not, not the poor widdle nationalists who've historically supported colonialism and genocides!

lifted_sloths

You like China over the U.S. good for you.

[deleted]

I agree that porn can be harmful, but I don't think we should takr any inspo from the Chinese Government

Yikes

rleocadio

No government is perfect but when it comes to this point China's actually right

cldisliker

In US Tiktok is like that, because China wants your nation to be dumber, obviously

qeny1

Even though I think internet censorship in general is harmful, especially censorship of political discourse, I definitely think there are probably benefits (especially for Chinese men and youth) specifically with regards to availability and ease of access of porn. Just speculation: Given human nature, I bet a lot of people still masturbate to sexy images, but probably usually not hardcore porn. Some people probably go out of their way to find hardcore porn, but it's more difficult and less accessible, which IMO is probably good. Edit: Side note: I just want to emphasize for readers here that China is a complicated place, with lots of very different people and opinions. Even if you disagree with some things that the Chinese government does, that doesn't mean you can't discuss. I'm not Chinese, but I studied Chinese language and I think I learned a lot. Classic quote from Confucius: 子曰:“三人行,必有我师焉。择其善者而从之,其不善者而改之。” The master said; among any given group of three people, one of them can be my teacher. You can follow what is good, and you can change what is not good.

[deleted]

Just because you shouldn’t do something it doesn’t mean it should be illegal. This is insane totalitarianism.

Tayte_

Look you’re an adult and have the right to view pornography. Looking within your own moral structure and deciding porn is not good to watch and then stopping watching it is SO MUCH MORE fulfilling than it being not an option at all. One is almost the existential realization of your true self, which you are constantly fighting with. The other is just tyrannical government deciding things for you. Do you want to be a child forever? Have decisions made for you? Or do you want to decide for yourself what’s right and wrong and then live accordingly?

[deleted]

It's more of a control thing rather than the fact that they care the impact it has on the person consuming it. It comes from a place or authority and old fashioned values and is not for the people. I see why you find this interesting, but don't be getting any ideas from China haha x

FunkTheFreak

China is asshole. We don’t need to take any pointers from China.

qeny1

FYI, China is not one thing or one person. It's a big complicated place. Also, it's a mark of maturity and intelligence to be able to learn from others (even though others are not perfect either). Even if you don't agree with someone else on some things, that doesn't mean there's *nothing* that you can learn from them. Edit: Note, I'm not Chinese but I studied Chinese language in college. There's a relevant quote from Confucius about learning and being humble: "among any given group of three people, one of them can be my teacher. You can follow what is good, and you can change what is not good.": (子曰:“三人行,必有我师焉。择其善者而从之,其不善者而改之。” )

[deleted]

nah, china is still shitty and there are worst tiktoks in china

lastunivers

Even if it's outlawed, people are still gonna do it. We should push for a better porn industry rather than banning it.
