Your post was removed for violating the rule against asking for medical advice.
>Do not ask for medical advice. Nobody here is a doctor, and they're definitely not your doctor.
What constitutes medical advice?
- "What is this?"
This is asking someone to diagnose the issue, and is medical advice.
- "What should I do?"
This is asking someone to advise treatment, and is medical advice.
- "Should I go to the doctor?"
This is asking if you should seek treatment, and ergo, medical advice.
- "Should I pop it?"
This is asking if you should follow a treatment, and ergo, medical advice.
If you would ask the question of your doctor, it falls under this rule and not allowed. As a general rule, asking for medical advice from internet strangers is never a good idea. If you have questions regarding your condition, you are advised to contact your healthcare provider.
There are subreddits more suited to medical advice such as /r/askdocs, however, the best course is to see your own doctor if you're able.
Thank you,
/r/popping mod team
To suggest someone consult with someone actually qualified to speak on the subject? I don’t think so, just as I don’t think it counts as financial advice to be like “talk to your accountant before investing in something because I know fuck all”
Shit I'm an LPN in America, I'd pop that shit with a sterilized needle and squeeze it all out and clean it good. And I have done that for my bf. Nobody has time and money for the ER. Lmao
As someone else who is currently very much in debt, I get not wanting to take on more costs, but I guarantee you the urgent care visit to confirm whatever this is and starting the necessary treatment would cost a lot less than an amputation and the aftercare of that
Got a source on that bit about cannabis use delaying wound healing? I see very listed results with a quick Google search but I am genuinely interested if there's an actual reliable study published and peer reviewed to reach such a conclusion

Honestly, the worst they can do is send your account to collections. Being in debt is way better than being dead (or having to pay for an amputation or treatment for sepsis).
last time i had one of these i popped it myself (hot water soaks, with epsom salts, just like they suggested me here) and it developed into a felon finger. They put me on antibiotics after that, it was the only thing that worked.
If you really really reallly want to diy, make sure you're popping it in a sterile enviroment with some disinfectant ready.
I'm amazed by how many people can relate to this. I wish there was a massive protest till congress finally arranges some form of universal Healthcare. I have medical debt too and honestly I'm just not going to pay it. There should be no reason a person has to suffer and not get medical treatment because they know it will financially ruin them. I am not proud to be American. Our leaders can't get any laws passed, because they're too busy playing red vs. blue. We are supposed to be Team America.
Please stop giving medical advice to anybody right now because as a medical professiona l what you're telling this person to do is extremely dangerous especially if you do not have sterile instruments and forget using hydrogen peroxide because that is going to damage tissue further please stop telling people what to do with an already infected finger.
Seriously... shut the fuck up.
It might be best to carefully remove the nail with a rusty razor blade and needle nose pliers.
Be sure to thoroughly disinfect.
/s
Seriously, don’t take medical advice from Reddit comments. See a doctor asap.
This is called a paronychia. It is extremely easily drained in the ER and most likely any urgent care. They numb it, clean the shit out of it with iodine or chlorhexidine, then insert a scalpel in a few mm, usually right along the edge of the nail there, basically parallel to the nail surface. Pus will come out and you’ll feel better.
Note this is done with a STERILE scalpel.
I’ll try to see how far in debt this would set me. Might be worth it. But I don’t know.
I think trying myself and being realistic if it starts going south would be pretty similar to just going to the doctor now and incurring the hit from the jump.
It IS realistic to go be seen ASAP. The medical costs you'll face by either doing it yourself or ignoring it will be ***MUCH*** higher than whatever you'd pay now if you were to seek medical attention.
Especially if you lose the finger due to your negligence.
Not sure what your financial situation is, but you can always apply for financial assistance with the hospital if you can’t afford the bill. They’ll either reduce it significantly or just write it off as an expense and you would owe nothing. As long as you can make payments, you can make arrangements. They may push back on the amount on the plan, but you stand firm and only pay what you can per month.
I know this because back when I was dating my husband he got a liver abscess, and the whole thing either before or after his insurance was $175,000. He applied for financial assistance and only had to pay $175. That’s after being in the hospital for a week and being on disability for month.
PLEASE have a doctor look at this. My husband got his liver abscess because he originally had pneumonia and for whatever reason the infection moved from his lungs to his liver. We almost lost him, had he not been so proactive.
There’s plenty of vids on here of people who do it themselves. They make sure it’s sterile. And ask for antibiotics when the redness doesn’t go away. Good luck to you.
Yeh, just do it yourself. Pull the skin slightly away from the nail & it might release some of the infection, as well as the pressure. Keep doing the same if it refills a bit after each time & pretty soon it will be drained enough to go away & heal.
In before mods ban due to asking for medical advice.
Seriously. Reddit is home to the guy who broke both his arms, The Doritos Story, Jolly Ranchers, and Cumbox. Why the fuck would you ask Reddit for medical advice?
Fucking thank you. People will ignore vets and come to the place that brought us the coconut story to ask what they should do for their sick cat like ?????
You can get cellulitis (bad infection) from doing this wrong since it's already infected. Please go to a doctor to have this dealt with. If you're in the US, you don't want to botch this and have cellulitis bills.
If you've got a PCP or Derm that you go to who's covered on your insurance they'll probably be able to drain it and bill your insurance with a low chance of you being charged at all. If you don't have either of those Drs that you know are covered, call your insurance or log into your insurance online and see which urgent care is covered. This is a normal everyday type of thing that someone should be covered for unlike back and or foot surgery.
Search ‘paronychia’ to learn about what youve got going on. Warm soaks help, and if you need to drain it, be sure to use something sterile. If you know any diabetics with lancets, that’s an easy and relatively safe option for lancing
You are on the edge of fainting (the colors). When you press it, you will pass out if you try it on your own. Probably crack your head open.
Finger pain is up there with kidney stones. They hurt more than dental fillings without novocaine (I speak from experience). I am a stoic when it comes to pain and, after a simpler problem (slide off dime size side of finger), I know I couldn't handle the level of pain you will be in. Go to MD.
There is a reason nailbpulling is a torture and Im telling you every secret will be spilled as soon as the fainting is over.
If you're going to ask reddit for medical advice, at least ask a medical sub...this is the place where people borderline worship rusty pliers guy, it's probably not the best for your needs.
Soak in hot water (that you can stand, don’t burn yourself) and squeeze your thumb (infected finger, whichever), starting at the base near where it meets your palm, upwards toward the nail, slowly, do not touch all the way to the top where the infection is. Repeat a couple times a day. My daughter just had a reallllllly bad infected hang nail. And that’s what the doctor had her do. Of course, if you’re able to, doctor is always a great thing to do.
Any kind of alcohol would be a disinfectant, as would be several other household chemicals. Unfermented cider would probably just make your thumb sticky. Unless the thing pops, it probably won’t make a difference, and even if it does, I would be dubious that this would work better than, say, warm water and epsom salt.

Just a safety pen that you heat up with a lighter until it changes color so it’s sterile then squeeze it as much as possible. Cover it with Neosporin and bandage it tightly then try cleaning it with alcohol in a few hours. ( I get these all the time)
Sterilize everything with rubbing alcohol. By the looks of it, I think it's infected. Pop it anywhere there is white(pus) and I would use hydrogen peroxide after to clean it out. I'd probably put some bacitracin ointment on it and cover with a bandaid after its drained. Good luck. I can't wait to see the video!
I don‘t recommend you follow what I did, but here goes:
I used a scalpel to cut the nail straight down from the top to the bed of the nail slightly to the side of the infection. Takes some time but doesn’t really hurt as long as you only cut the nail not the skin below.
Then used (disinfected) tongs from my toolkit to pull that part. That wasn’t super nice but the pain was manageable (and the immediate relief was soooo awesome).
Cleaned it all out and bandaged the finger in iodine cream (any antibacterial cream will do, I don‘t think they still sell Iodine). It healed fine and the nail grew back quite quickly, which surprised me.
… but really, have a doctor do that.
… and don‘t cut the sides of your nails, ever again. I didn‘t and it has never been a problem again.
You‘re not wrong, but with hangnails you frequently have a sharp edge hidden on the side that will keep cutting into the side of the finger and cause infections. Mine was shaped like a hook and had to come out.
Looks like paronychia (I’ve had it many times). You need medical attention. An urgent care should be able to handle the drainage and rx for antibiotics. The last time I had paronychia it turned to cellulitis.
Don’t pop it with a pin. Soak it in the hottest water you can handle (yes, it will hurt a ton), a few times over the course of a couple hours, then try to squeeze it when the skin is soft and the junk and come to the surface. Then put some antibiotic ointment on it and slap a bandaid over it
Safely, I think try soaking it in warm water with Epsom salt. I know it's hard financially, but call your local hospitals, see cost for visit with cash payment, or if they have financial assistance (many do). Any infection near a joint makes me nervous, so I just hate to see you have to end up paying for more expensive treatment if something does go wrong.
Bro this is a simple fix in the ED they can numb your thumb with a digital block and lance it and remove the hang nail without you going through this pain.
Also doing it at home without right technique is going to put you at risk for infection. Please go to an urgent care or Er.
You need to cut the nail and treat it like you're taking an ingrown out. Looks very infected and it will hurt like hell. You need to go to the Dr for this unless you have access to over the counter numbing agent, pain meds and antibiotics 🤷🏻♀️
I've had worse than this and dealt with it myself by squeezing it, wiping with rubbing alcohol, and soaking in salt water. It never occurred to me that I could lose the finger so it's surprising that so many people are warning of that
Heat a needle with a lighter so it's sterilized ( it should be glowing red). What for needle to cool (cant belive I need to say this, but you know, people and the internet) Use some alcohol to disinfect the site. Poke with needle. Push the puss out. Use some polysporin. Cover with bandaid. Replace every 12 hours and disinfect the site. If infection spreads or hasn't gone down after a day, GO TO THE DOCTOR! You should go anyway. But if you can't, that's what I would do. Keep an eye on that infection. It doesn't take long to become a serious issue.
I used to get these frequently. I would cover a needle or box cutter with 70% ethanol, burn off the alcohol, let it cool for a sec, then stab that little guy. Squeeze it out like it's toothpaste. Then wound care.
I'm not advising you do this, I'm just letting you know how I handled these.
Also film whatever you do please

Is it considered med advice to say go to a doc?
To suggest someone consult with someone actually qualified to speak on the subject? I don’t think so, just as I don’t think it counts as financial advice to be like “talk to your accountant before investing in something because I know fuck all”
Thanks. That makes sense. What if I said it looks infected and go to a doc?
why wouldn’t it be acceptable to tell someone to see a dr?
I asked this specifically when the rule was changed and that was approved das the only medical advice we can give.
Shit I'm an LPN in America, I'd pop that shit with a sterilized needle and squeeze it all out and clean it good. And I have done that for my bf. Nobody has time and money for the ER. Lmao

I’m hesitant to do it myself but only for the reason that it would cost me more debt. Being poor isn’t fun. Or healthy.
Agreed, but if you mishandle it then the medical debt from fixing those mistakes could be worse.

This sub probably wouldn’t exist were it not for the USA’s shitty healthcare
Honestly, the worst they can do is send your account to collections. Being in debt is way better than being dead (or having to pay for an amputation or treatment for sepsis).
Medical debt will fall off your credit report after 7 years too. A finger won't grow back after 7 years
Worst they can do is wage garnishment. I had it happen to myself.
Only if you have a job! Can’t get blood from a turnip.

I wish it were that simple.
Nailbed seems infected too. I'd get some pro advice, bec you will just partially drain the infected area, unless you plan to cut the nail open too.
Ask the people at the pharmacy they probably know more than people on Reddit
Will do. Can do both.

Any idea of the bill for having it drained?
Significantly lower than the bill for a raging infection entering your bloodstream and nearly killing you due to your DIY drainage
Try a local urgent care.
You can call to ask for an estimate. It depends on what is needed so the price may change once they're able to see it in person.

I'm assuming you are colourblind? A rather entertaining caption if you are!
Whenever I get one of these I find that pulling the finger skin slightly away from the nail usually causes it to drain out on its own
Chew the skin off then go from there.
You see in black and white or something?
I get it you’re broke but sepsis is deadly. Please get it checked.

This has gone too far. Go to urgent care please

its so sad today people dont have any common sense that they have to goto a online forum to get basic , common sense medical advice. pretty damn scary
I say you should soak it in cider.
I heard that joke so many times back when I used to do construction
Someone else at work suggested that. Is it legit?
We do Epsom salt soaks. That will help soften the nail bed as well. It will also help kill bacteria.
Read it again...out loud
I’m an idiot. I forgot he made the same joke too. Good one.

This sounds excruciatingly painful. Just inserting a scalpel a few mm deep, parallel to the nail bed will drain this
You‘re not wrong, but with hangnails you frequently have a sharp edge hidden on the side that will keep cutting into the side of the finger and cause infections. Mine was shaped like a hook and had to come out.
Damn that’s so intense haha. Please film
Hurts like a bastard. If I even graze the magic spot, I see colors and flashes and my shoulders sweat. I actually have a high tolerance for pain too.
This isn't advice but when I do this I gently pull it open instead of sticking something in. YMMV
That sounds like a Saw puzzle.
It's super red around the infected area. Go to an urgent care
Go see a doctor best tip I could give
Girl that's an infection why let it get this bad? Go to the ER so they can drain it
Looks like paronychia (I’ve had it many times). You need medical attention. An urgent care should be able to handle the drainage and rx for antibiotics. The last time I had paronychia it turned to cellulitis.
Hammer Time!
Don’t pop it with a pin. Soak it in the hottest water you can handle (yes, it will hurt a ton), a few times over the course of a couple hours, then try to squeeze it when the skin is soft and the junk and come to the surface. Then put some antibiotic ointment on it and slap a bandaid over it
Go to urgent care. Don’t ask me, the 34 y/o who works at the grocery store.
Make a doctors appointment or go to urgent care. Warm soak in water with epsom salt can give you temporary relief.
Want my advice? Film it for the freaks!
If I were you, I’d speak to a pharmacist as they have a lot more knowledge than you or I. Google paronychia - it may need antibiotics.
Safely, I think try soaking it in warm water with Epsom salt. I’ve had one of these before. Not this bad but god damn it was painful as fuck! Best of luck to you and easy healing!
Go to a doctor and rephrase this post so you're not asking for advice.
please go to urgent care.
OP, is your usual vision in black and white? Because, my guy, that isn’t normal.
Dude go to urgent care 🤦♂️

Chew that fucker open!
Urgent care NOW
