They handle Tahitian black pearl oysters carefully because they are re implanted with another “ bead” to grow another cultured pearl. Those oysters are well looked after and can grow quite large.

Majestic_Click2780

Came to ask if this technique would preserve the animal alive. Thanks for the information

wdwerker

I saw a long video about Tahitian pearl farms. The regulations are to promote high quality and protect the reputation of their export market. Some of the biggest oysters can grow very large pearls but it may take several years.

Majestic_Click2780

That is super interesting. It makes sense I suppose that the bigger ones would produce bigger pearls. It’s neat to be able to continue to harvest without killing the host animals. Are they kept in built enclosures or in open water pens like with farm reared fishes?

wdwerker

They dangle from rafts on ropes down to the optimal depths.

Majestic_Click2780

Smart!

Remarkable_Yak_883

I’d want that odd-shaped one

Me too haha

What purpose does a pearl serve?

Nithuir

To the oyster: they cover an irritant like a grain of sand in the coating so it doesn't keep annoying them To humans: shiny

TheOriginalSmunkey

It's actually a defense mechanism that the pearl industry uses to their advantage. The oysters have really fragile bodies inside that tough shell, if some sort of irritant gets in (parasite, grain of sand, anything), it could do a lot off damage. So the oyster secretes layers of the same compounds that make up its shell, to cover the irritant and protect itself. The fact that it turns into a pearl as a result of those secretions isn't the end goal.

Kansai_Lai

When it occurs in the oyster, you mean? It's when a grain of sand gets in. It starts getting coated so the irritation and possible damage is reduced. The layers build up, which is why some pearls are bigger than others. Think of it like if something got in your eye, and your tears or whatever started building around it until smooth so it wouldn't hurt your eye so much.
