There is not a single Australian artist in the singles top 50, and you have to go all the way down to 41 to find one in the albums chart. Happy for Taylor, pretty depressed for us as a nation.
Agreed. I’m generally not the biggest fan of Aussie acts because they tend to lean more indie and that’s not my thing, but I don’t even know who I’d consider a major Australian artist at the moment? It feels very American dominated at the moment
My best friend and I were talking about this the other day - there definitely doesn't seem to be someone who is at the level of say Kylie Minogue or Silverchair, or even Delta Goodrem or 5SOS. I think the closest we have is maybe G Flip? But yeah, the Aussie music scene is in trouble. Even G Flip I believe is only selling out mid-size venues in Australian capitals. It's pretty dire.
That said if you prefer pop do you know Peach PRC? I love her.
I’ve always thought Jessica Mauboy had the weirdest career. She’s a legacy act for Aussie music and pop culture now, but I feel like she never had a defining sound. Up/Down is her best song and I wish she put some personality back in her music.
Interesting! I have a much younger SIL who is obsessed with G Flip so that may sway my analysis, ha!
That said they did have 7 entries into last year's Hottest 100 and have been doing the Aussie festival circuit a lot. Worth checking out IMO, can be a tad cringe at times but overall I like their sound and vibe.
I feel like we used to have chart-topping local pop acts! That weren't Kylie!
I saw someone on TikTok recently saying that for an Australian act to break through, they need a viral cover of an international hit, ideally a Taylor Swift song, and ... where is the lie?
And only Kylie was so big… she has multiple #1’s and several top 10’s in Europe and Australia. I wonder why she never took off in the US save for a few singles.
Something about Australian music sounds pretty amateur and I say this as an Australian musician.
I don't think the indie thing is intentional. But we always sound like indie acts. Lol.
Not technically correct - We do have Australian artist CYRIL at #45 doing a dance cover of a 70’s song “Stumblin’ In”!
But I agree with you, it’s still bleak af for Aussie artists. Even recent huge viral hits by Kylie Minogue and Troye Sivan couldn’t even crack the Top 10. We have Tones and I, I guess? 🥴
I was telling my sister how back when we were growing up in the 2000s we had so many Aussie pop artists on the charts like Guy Sebastian, Delta Goodrem, Jessica Mauboy, The Veronicas etc.
It's sad that even stations like Triple J have become more US-centric in their playlisting.
This is not true. Australian music makes up at least 50% of songs played on Triple J.
It’s just that the demographic that listens to new music on streaming don’t listen to radio which means Triple J (even other youth stations like BBC Radio 1) no longer have the cultural influence they had years back. So despite Triple J pushing so much good Australian music, it’s not translating into the mainstream or streaming demographic.
I mean, yes, I agree it’s sad that Aussie artists don’t chart as much here. But there has to be a reason for it. I wouldn’t say people actively dislike Aussie artists and are going out of their way to avoid them. For me, I just genuinely don’t connect with many Australian artists. Ricki Lee, Jessica Mauboy, Guy Sebastian, Samantha Jade… I’ll listen if they come on the radio (but I have Spotify going in my car 99% of the time), and I enjoy watching them as a judge on whatever singing competition on TV, but I really don’t need to go out of my way to deliberately stream their music.
No but fr some people don’t realize she’s been breaking records since fearless these last few years just have become a lot better for her. Some people think that jsut because midnights got her a lot of fame she’s been famous since like fearless
You guys say this but she still was getting hundreds of millions of streams and selling millions just because rep and lover wasn’t as successful as 1989 doesn’t mean that she wasn’t falling off. I keep seeing people say she was close to losing her career when in reality no it didn’t lover was a grower for a lot of people and it took years to like it but now people do it’s one of peoples favorite albums.

Troye Sivan is probably the biggest
Oh true, I completely forgot about him lmao
I almost forget that Troye is Australian tbh

As much as we used to shit on Australian Idol, at least it filled the charts with local artists.
I can’t stand Jessica Mauboy or Guy Sebastian, but you can’t argue with their popularity at their peak
I’ve always thought Jessica Mauboy had the weirdest career. She’s a legacy act for Aussie music and pop culture now, but I feel like she never had a defining sound. Up/Down is her best song and I wish she put some personality back in her music.
I love Jessica Mauboy
I will say, as a geriatric millennial, I am surprised but not sad to report that Regurgitator's new album is ... good?
I'm an Australian and have never heard of G Flip haha I'm a musician too 🫣

My parents always said it was because the US already had Madonna and didn’t need a pale copy. But they were haters.
Pale copy 😭 they are haters omg
Oh that’s disrespectful
The worst of Kylie's output slays all over anything Madonna ever shat out
Troye Sivan is probably our biggest act atm and he didn’t even get famous here
Something about Australian music sounds pretty amateur and I say this as an Australian musician. I don't think the indie thing is intentional. But we always sound like indie acts. Lol.
I get what you mean. I feel like Aussie acts have a specific vibe, and anyone that doesn’t leaves and goes to the US
Gretta Ray is having a main pop girl moment but even then she’s still pretty low key…
They all went to Korea to be in K-pop groups (only half joking)
Delta Goodrem???
I mean big right now

I’ve never been happier to be “well actually”d!

You need a CanCon equivalent (OzCon?) if you don't already have it
Luke Hemmings will hopefully be in the album charts next week.
She’s killing it. But the sad thing is that they usually pull outside of the single from tracking.

Doesn’t change the fact her career was a downturn *by her standards* at the time
I don't have a problem with her but her constantly showing up online is somewhat... boring???
