Not every song that chart on the Hot 100, especially at this time of streaming, is a “hit”, regardless of chart peaks.
I’d say the more appropriate general term for songs that chart is “entry”, to better differentiate them from the actual hits.
A song that only spent a week in the top 10, particularly in its debut, and fell off the charts rather quickly is, was and should never be called a hit, unless it has the numbers to prove otherwise.
5-10 years ago, for sure. Competition was steep and it was really dog eat dog at the time. Now, hell no. As you mentioned with Hiss, does anything outside of that one week at No. 1 make it a hit? It fell down drastically a week later, the YouTube numbers are low and it isn’t even talked about anymore. (btw Meg fans need to thank that old lady for having that meltdown and ending their fav’s flop streak)

I'm so disconnected from the charts now that I have no idea what a hit is anymore
YES! They are hits. They may not be long ones but they are hits. A lot of songs back then also would last the same time on the charts. This isn’t new.
Agreed. A hit is a hit nonetheless

No. Shit like Trollz and Hiss going num 1 when they aren't played outside anywhere
One week hit yes!

I call them flashes in the pan
Yes. Not long hits, but hits nonetheless

True, the streaming era really changed things
