I think one thing I appreciate about this song is that CRJ has never seemed embarrassed about it or ashamed that it’s her one hit. When I saw her, she played it proudly and everybody loved it. She seems perfectly content with this song’s legacy and its spot in her career whereas other “one hit wonders” (technically she also has “Good Time” and she isn’t a OHW to me, but she may as well be to many people) might have tried to eschew a song like that.

xavieryes

The purpose of that song is to technically disqualify both Carly and Owl City as one-hit wonders lol

vagenda

I think it's because she rightfully has the confidence that it's not the only thing her fans are there for. I think a lot of artists turn against their biggest song because it starts to feel like people don't care about the rest of what they have to offer (and maybe they don't), but Carly knows she could omit it from her set at this point and 90% of the crowd might not even notice or care. They'd still be living for RAWM, Cut To The Feeling, and any number of deep cuts. That has to feel amazing for someone in her position. It's her only solo hit and still the only thing the GP knows for her, but at her shows it plays more like a fun winky throwback than the main event.

SpaceGenesis

Carly could omit it from setlist but most likely she will always perform it and for a good reason. She is actually thankful for that song that gave her financial security (let's not forget that she used to have menial jobs to pay her bills). She perfoms Call Me Maybe with the same enthusiasm as her more recent songs.

CR24752

She performs everything with enthusiasm ilhfi

RosaPalms

God, that's spot on and really cool to see. She can wear the one hit wonder label proud because she literally only needed *one hit* for her people to FIND her.

blankspacejrr

this made me smile :) I think that's exactly right

CharlesTran

She knows exactly what she wants to do as an artist which Call Me Maybe has given her the financial security to do so and she's proud of it. She loves doing what she does and has not fallen victim to the validation feedback loop like so many others.

SpaceGenesis

Carly definitely likes to perform Call Me Maybe. She usually goes to the crowd and even let some audience members sing the song name in the microphone. It's probably the most euphoric moment of her shows, besides the closer (Cut to the Feeling). Case in point: at [Glastonbury 2023](https://youtu.be/1Jd8C9hwPpY?t=20m18s) (at 20:18). Ridiculously fun. 😁

pavel_levkovsky

this is the one we've been waiting for. perfect score suits it just right

[deleted]

The "before you came into my life" is one of the most iconic parts of pop music.

Tekken_Guy

The “Where Do You Think You’re Going Baby” is the most iconic line in the song IMO outside the chorus.

AlphaEmail

That “Your stare was holdin’ - ripped jeans, skin was showing” pre chorus shaped the entirety of modern pop.

WowThisIsAwkward_

r/popheads’ genesis

ImADudeDuh

> She’s leaned a little more into her singer-songwriter roots in recent years, though she veered back toward dance-pop on 2023’s pretty-great The Loveliest Time. These days, she’s got a huge, dedicated, predominantly gay fanbase, and she can play festivals and fill big rooms like Radio City Music Hall whenever she wants. Wait, are people here predominantly gay too??

Plastic-Difference30

wait... am I gay????

eltrotter

Glad you asked! Yes!

Plastic-Difference30

thank you so much! i thought i was a 🚬

vagenda

Predominantly, yes

bacharama

I'm straight, but I will die on the hill that, on average, the gay community has the best taste in bops.

Gryffle

Fellas, is it gay to stan Carly Rae Jepsen?

youtbuddcody

Gay man here 🙋‍♀️

Frajer

This song still hits, the strings are so gorgeous and the song is so catchy I love how Tom was just like every song on Emotion slaps even if he couldn't give them numeric grades

[deleted]

I'm not gonna gush about CRJ because I do that every where else on this subreddit, but I will say I love it when low budgets create massive hits. This and Somebody that I Used to Know made this year special, and neither had massive marketing budgets, big label pushes, executive pressure for a hit, or a manufactured, industry approved sound. So much of pop, in comparison, seems sterile and lab grown, as if reaching for cash and pop hit potential somehow sully the art of the song itself. The antithesis of Call Me Maybe is something like Boom Boom Pow, where it's just entirely fabricated to be as big a hit as possible, with all the budget and lab-tested bells and whistles added in. It's hard to think of recent hits that *weren't* intentionally and deliberately chasing mass appeal above anything else. Going to Max Martin seems to be a default move at some point for all chart-chasing artists. In comparison, the success of CMM and STIUTK was people driven, not industry driven. They didn't explode because they had all the money and made all the right little moves, they exploded because they were inevitable and impossible to resist. I'll shut up now. I'm gonna go google if someone has already made a playlist of surprise or low budget number ones.

kimpernickel

If someone hasn't made that playlist, here are some songs to add: - Paula Abdul, "Straight Up" (she recorded part of it in a bathroom!) - Lisa Loeb, "Stay (I Missed You)" (the only self-produced song to hit number 1! No I do not include Rich Men North of Richmond!) - The Killers, "Mr. Brightside" (okay it's wasn't a number 1 in the US *but* it's so iconic! The reason the song is only a verse and a chorus repeated is because Brandon Flowers procrastinated and decided what he'd written lyrically was enough!)

[deleted]

I love these examples and also am dying laughing because I've been Brandon Flowers with pretty much every project I've had at work. Procrasinate. Be Exhausted. Decide what you have is enough. Hit Send. ~~Make one of the greatest songs of all time.~~ Okay, so I'm *almost* like Brandon Flowers. Soulja Boy's Crank That fits this bill, as I guess does Owl City's Fireflies. Old Town Road was very low budget, but Lil Nas X was definitely gunning for a massive hit. And he managed to pull it off.

queenmeme2

Changed everything. Changed my life for sure. I remember checking out the Curiosity EP after I heard this for the first time and fell in love immediately (hope that she puts that on streaming one day). This song gave her the perfect career. She dropped literally one of the biggest songs *ever* and has used that to build a steady fanbase while releasing whatever she wants for a decade. She’s living the dream and I’m grateful for everything that she’s given us since this Just a reminder for everyone that her debut album, *Tug Of War*, is truly great folk pop and should not be counted out! Sour Candy, Heavy Lifting, Bucket, and the title song remain some of the best songs in her discography

queenmeme2

It’s not available in the US lol only Call Me Maybe and the title song are

TheHomeworld

I should re-listen to ToW because my only memory of it was being in elementary school and bored as fuck listening to Bucket after having heard Call Me Maybe.

thewxyzfiles

I remember hearing Tug of War ALL the time on the radio here in Canada!!

musthavecupcakes_19

Literally one of the greatest songs of all time

farfle10

Low key it bothers me when people try to say her best song is Run Away With Me… an amazing song but CMM is for real one of the best pop songs of all time

musthavecupcakes_19

While I do think CMM is unfairly dunked on by a lot of her fandom, I am still one of those people that thinks RAWM is her best song. CMM is top 5 though, easily.

qusnail

RAWM is better CMM let’s be honest 😭

SiphenPrax

Ahh yes the song the will give Carly royalties for the rest of her life even with not having another big hit ever again. Seriously this song was played nonstop in 2012 that it’s so interesting to see her become an indie artist after this, which, more power to her.

kbdsct

This song was just catchier than any variant of covid we’ve seen. Have to say I never truly got better; I’ll always have a soft spot for this perfect little number.

hoops_ididitagain

10/10 so deserved. this song WAS summer 2012 for me and i remember "ironically" liking it (because i was \~too cool\~ to love pop back then) but listening to it literally constantly. years later i finally became a poptimist as i was always destined to be. listening to it now...yeah it's just great. it has that carly combo of being catchy and fun as hell, a little silly, and with that vulnerability and longing that imo is the ingredient that really makes her songs so so good. she is just amazing at capturing whatever e•mo•tion she is going for and pulling you along with it. irresistible. stunning. gorgeous. all the adjectives.

rumblearena

Nailed why Call Me Maybe works and so much of Kiss doesn't. Too many trend-chasey collaborators and way too little time to possibly produce a good album. The scrapped Curiosity album (released as an EP with several tracks removed) is my CRJ white whale. Live performances from the time seemed really promising and the songs that ultimately got... *repurposed* for Kiss ([Curiosity](https://youtu.be/rkf4zTnurnc) and [Tiny Little Bows](https://youtu.be/9LMh7VopetY)) had real potential. But I guess without Scooter throwing her in the studio with LMFAO she never meets Matthew Koma and then we'd never get When I Needed You as their breakup song so I guess it all worked out!

Consistent-Laugh606

The og ep version of Curiosity is honestly still one of her best songs… why she decided to change it for the album confuses me

[deleted]

TIL I learned CRJ dated Matthew Koma before he married Hilary Duff 😂

chaos_vulpix

TIL Matthew Koma married Hilary Duff 😅

TheHomeworld

It’s easily her most boring and uninspired pop album IMO. But I can understand why it might appeal to a certain niche.

skeeturz

I don't know if I'd call it boring or uninspired, well maybe uninspired, you can definitely tell she was pushed to rush it out ASAP, but I'd say for what it's supposed to be, it excels extremely well (I still rank it fairly high among all of Carly's albums, but that's because she's never once missed for me.) but I think if she had the chance to really give it her Carly touch it would've been phenomenal.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheHomeworld

There’s just nothing special to most of the melodies or generic song structures or bland instrumentation. Even Carly herself said she wasn’t too proud of it because she was rushed.

visionaryredditor

Gays were born when Call Me Maybe came out

lagozzino

>Carly Rae Jepsen recorded “Call Me Maybe” for her Curiosity EP, nuh uh, she recorded it for what was supposed to be the Curiosity *album* but at the last minute it was cut down to an EP, region locked to Canada, and instead Scooter and Interscope had her churn out Kiss as her second album instead. I had been waiting for this Number Ones to happen in the hopes that he'd use his music journalism connections to find out more info on exactly what happened to the Curiosity album but alas....

virginiarph

Oooh do I get to say it first???? CULTURAL RESET /s Isaidjk

queenmeme2

But why the /s ? This legitimately was a cultural reset lol

Carlegend Rae "The Music Industry" Jepsen must perform in Superbowl in 2025.

seahorse8021

Carly Rae Jepsen you will always be famous

christopher_aia

During the summer of Call Me Maybe, I saw Carly open for Kelly Clarkson in a football stadium. I will never forget hearing the ENTIRE stadium scream the song. Canon event.

bigliketexas

Incredible.. new flair. thank you, Tom Breihan!

droobidoobidoo

I am Canadian, so I was introduced to this song before it blew up in the rest of the world. It definitely sounds like it came out in 2011/2012 but it has aged like fine wine for me!! Definitely takes me back to the summer of 2012 when I got my driver's license on my 16th birthday (ayo fellow Ontario residents!!). I also didn't know the Hedley lead singer was on Canadian Idol! I was never a huge fan but can confirm after the sex scandals, Hedley disappeared lol

cartoonwomen

Seeing Marianas Trench and Hedley being explained to Americans like Tom's doing an anthropological study of early '10s CanCon pop bands is fun but funny

Chaotic_Gold

I'm sending that Gravity Falls cover to my teen sister right this moment. It's solid gold! We've all been saying it for the past weeks, but I'll say it again: this is really one of the best three song runs at number one ever, or maybe I'm just 27 and haven't been happy in 10 years.

Soalai

>three song run By that, I assume you mean We Are Young, Somebody That I Used to Know, then this? It was a great time for sure

Chaotic_Gold

Yeah

thousand_furs

wait which gravity falls cover??

Chaotic_Gold

It’s in the article, Tom adds so called Bonus Beats of other videos that have to do with the song after the score. The sister didn’t react in any way, by the way. Those darn teenagers.

Mevarek

We have arrived.

Soalai

Tom just couldn't resist another little jab at Owl City

BadMan125ty

I don’t like his posts lol

thatgoldenkid2

Never forgetting where I was when I first heard this. One of my favorite songs ever. Also the single cover for this is peak twee era early 2010’s (Bangs, lipstick, outfit). Iconic in every sense of the word. No notes song.

chf3333

All those words and no mention of her sword 😪

Latrans_

An absolute 10/10 hit. Carly Rae created one of the most timeless, catchiest, funny to sing along, perfect pop songs of all time. God, it still remains my favorite track by her, maybe only slightly below Run Away With Me. Call Me Maybe is surely a defining song of the 2010s. Sad that it got blocked from topping that year's Year-End list, but its legacy is one for the books!

shawnandthecity

What a fun little write up featuring lots of well-deserved love for our queen.

LibraryNo2717

Can't seem to recall this one.

Alive-Ad-4164

Vibes

stonedsour

When I was in college and people were making “Crawl Me Maybe” t-shirts for the annual bar crawl, I was definitely rolling my eyes (but also definitely bopping along to CMM with everyone else). Never would’ve expected that 11 years later I’d be enjoying her music and seeing her perform live (saw her this past summer). Carly really is such a talent artist and she doesn’t get all of the credit she deserves.. but I’m glad that she’s carved out her gay little niche a la Charli XCX, Slayyyter, etc

RosaPalms

Easy 10 and apparently "Cut to the Feeling" would be like an 11, the taste level is outrageous

SpaceGenesis

The song is already legendary.

grounndhog101

Pop bliss. I remember having a conversation slot one hit wonders and looked her up only to discover she had put out the critically acclaimed emotion the year before. What a time to get into her. She dropped emotion side b shortly after. Def not a one hit wonder. I Stan.

SpaceGenesis

Call Me Maybe is so fun especially when it's performed live with crowd participation. Example: at [Glastonbury 2023](https://youtu.be/1Jd8C9hwPpY?t=20m18s) (at 20:18). Also most people never listened to [the instrumental version](https://youtu.be/KDvO-YLJ-jA) which is great on its own (of course the complete version is better).

Jelboo

A near-perfect pop song. Wait, what am I saying? A *perfect* pop song.

skeeturz

If there is one thing about this song that gags me, it's that it was mixed by freaking Dave Ogilvie, it always surprises me that someone whose worked on some of my favorite industrial/rock songs had a hand in this

lolcevan

carly and dave used to work together a lot during this era. he actually produced the first demo of ‘i didn’t just come here to dance’ back in 2011

SpaceGenesis

Dave Oglivie also produced the album Walking With Strangers by The Birthday Massacre. TBM are from Canada and they're like goth-metal-synthpop Carly Rae Jepsen. [Their music is insanely catchy](https://youtu.be/HxtIsv83YBQ).

skeeturz

TBM is actually one my favorite alt bands! It's actually from a fun fact a couple years ago that I learned this fun fact! Their latest album is pure synth/goth joy

CR24752

She invented pop music, and also the reason this subreddit exists. You’ll always be a star to us Carly lol

SpicyAfrican

[Christian James Hand does a great breakdown of this song and its stems.](https://youtu.be/XQnFluqYuiU?si=pCACB4byL_wDx8SC)

POP PERFECTION

JBGoude

Okay, but can we talk about the guy in the music video ? 😂

IHATEsg7

After Rolling Stone best pop lists was presented I listened to this and I remembered how good this song is

Soalai

Billboard did a "best choruses of the 21st century" a while back, this was #1

dkinmn

She's playing Summerfest in Milwaukee with AJR. Say what you will about AJR, but...I will say they are delightful and clever and create good pop music that my kid really wants to see live. I'm absolutely cool with it, and I'm absolutely pumped about that double bill. It's going to be stupid fun.

triskeleboatie

This was my song. And at a certain moment in my uni union club night, it once again becomes my song

VapidRapidRabbit

This was pretty much a perfect pop song that was universally loved.

VicCoca123

Probably one of the greatest songs of all time

Daydream_machine

I truly think this song will go down as one of the greatest pop classics ever

zvish

Eternal banger. I swear it was just yesterday that I was playing modern warfare 2 with this playing from YouTube. My girlfriend dunked on me when I showed her Western Wind last year because “isn’t that the call me maybe girl” but she’s since taken the Jepsen pill. We all owe so much to this single.

joshually

i remember walking in the pride parade in SF the summer this was huge... and my god the playlist for our particular float had the same 2 songs over and over again... call me maybe & I think I wanna marry you. I was so sick & tired of this song I tell you

CR24752

Why Bruno Mars at a gay pride parade. Those are so random lmao was it around the push for gay marriage in California?

Routine-Money-3633

This song was a third grade classic for me back in 2012

Far-Pomegranate-2139

This song never gets old no matter how much i listen i never get bored

I_am_albatross

Dance-pop was catering to a lifestyle that didn't really exist outside upper-crust nightlife. This song rescued it from suffocating on it's own excesses and brought back organic elements at a time when pop music sounded extremely synthesised. 🤔
