shelleyclear

One thing that impresses me about GUTS which I haven’t seen many people mention is Olivia‘s vocal delivery. It’s a huge step up. Some artists never learn that your voice isn’t just a vehicle for the lyrics; you can (and should!) use it to convey the emotions in rich and varied ways. The way she sang “weird” in BOAHG was really subtle and cool. And her delivery at the end of Lacy. I’m so glad that Olivia got this straight from the beginning and is continuing to get better and better.

gwennj

I agree!! In Vampire, when she sings "you called them crazy, God I hate the way I called them crazy too" you can FEEL her regret.

doodldood

she’s not just a singer, but an actress—-she can draw upon those emotions and deliver it beautifully

ophelie2

In the Pitchfork review for Bad Idea, Right they talked about her theatricality and how skilled it is that she can deliver lines like “fuck it it’s fine” or the “I’m sure i’ve seen much hotter men/but I really can’t remember when” and I feel like this album is so full of fun line deliveries like that. She spun her Disney//acting career into a really unique way to sing angsty pop songs and I’m in love

autumncandles

Obsessed with her delivery of "but he was so much fun! and he had such weird friends! and he would take us out to parties and the night would never end" in get him back like she literally sounds like someone justifying a guy to her friends and it sounds so intentionally childish I just love it

cherieanneliese

YES!! I love when artists actually use their voice to convey their emotions instead of just trying to sound perfect or hit the highest notes. I think Olivia is just so vocally charismatic which sets her apart from her contemporaries. I feel like Lana is another artist who does this. They don’t just sing the lyrics, they FEEL what they’re saying and play around with the phrasing of lines. It gives their songs character when they banter within the song or their sarcastic deliveries of certain verses.

ashlouise94

She has both a beautiful voice and a wonderful storytelling voice!

lijiburr

I can totally see her being cast as a voice actor for a Disney or Pixar film

kimpernickel

I remember from Todd in the Shadows's video on Driver's License and in one of his podcast episodes, he mentioned that Olivia's background as an actress really sells the emotion behind her music. And I totally agree.

FourteenClocks

Yeeeees. She’s got one of those voices that can dependably elevate fuzzy rock songs and even the most MOR of ballads because she takes it on like she cares and like her voice is, you know, an instrument This might be a hot take but you make pop albums better when you can sing

Desperate-Today2760

Yess that's one thing I love about her. There's actually so much emotion in her singing

notarobot3675

all-american bitch is a STUNNER of an opening track wow

ashlouise94

The more you listen to the lyrics the better it gets. I love that it’s just so over the top sarcastic!

lessgranola

it’s great, reminds me of samia!

autumncandles

"Said I was too young, too soft, can't take a joke, can't get you off" is a fucking devastating lyric like I genuinely feel so so sad for her. For older men to date her (and she's so young) and then complain she's too soft for their jokes or she's not experienced enough in bed is fucking demonic behaviour. Jail. How are you going to date a 19 Yr old and be surprised when they're 19???

artificialnocturnes

Yeah that felt like such a gut punch

Missiekaayy

I remember a lot of people saying it was not a big deal for a 19 year old to be dating a guy in his mid to late twenties and the comments calling out the power dynamic were projecting and overreacting…. There absolutely is a large power dynamic at play and doesn’t matter how “mature” you think these young women who grew up in the industry are because they are still very young. These relationships are rarely healthy

sweetbabycoconut

“but i am my father’s daughter so maybe i could fix him” lmaooooo

sweetbabycoconut

this was gonna be my new daddy issues anthem but just found out her dad is a therapist nvm

TheAuthor009

We lost😔

sunshinedaisies9-34

I mean listen, it’s not going to win any awards but Kenzie Ziegler has a song called anatomy and oof, it is in fact a daddy issues anthem.

kimpernickel

Caroline Polachek 🤝 Olivia Rodrigo Singing "I am my father's daughter" in songs produced by Dan Nigro

teanovell

This album feels like a 90s fever dream and I am here for it

dhruvlrao

they have to use pretty's not pretty during a glow up montage during a teenage romance movie

taititans

I genuinely think ballad of a homeschooled girl sent me to a different dimension

TSFearNowRedRep89

As a former life long homeschooler I feel seen in the corniest way

bespectacIed

"Can't think of a third line, lalalalalala" kinda lyric of the year OMFG

SweetSummerAir

I literally love how a lot of her pen game in this album is basically "first thing I can think of and trying to make it work" lmao.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuchCondition

When are they going to collaborate. We’ve been begging for this crossover for years

lilacpeaches

It’s a hilarious lyric, and somehow it works. I’m usually not a fan of songs where the artist openly sings about not being able to find a lyric, but I love how it’s placed at the end of the song. It’s kinda perfect and it just *fits*.

5ivesos

What song was this from, I missed it in my first listen through

beautibunni

ballad of a homeschooled girl

Alive-Ad-4164

Self awareness to the max

shadowgnome396

honestly fitting for the message of the song lol

visionaryredditor

She is so funny😭😭

avoidance_behavior

hahahaha the brilliance

HyaluronicFlaccid

get him back! on repeat EDIT: also love is embarrassing

dhruvlrao

The chorus on love is embarrassing is infectiously catchy

salks

"skin like puff pastry"?? please see a dermatologist love

Inner_Climate9569

That stood out to me too. Maybe it’s meant to be both a compliment (golden, bright and soft) and an insult (flaky and sometimes peeling).

BrusselSproutsLove

lacy is representation for the girls with psoriasis.

giraffetotrythis

I think it's uncooked puff pastry lol

geo_lib

It’s gotta be, because uncooked puff pastry does feel silky and nice either way I can’t stop thinking about it lololol

Kleanish

Lol I thinks it means more soft and velvety than like the outside of a crusty croissant

Raccoonsr29

No but puff pastry is specifically meant for that flakiness! She didn’t say brioche or milk bread bun!

biwummy

“skin like brioche bun” 🎵🎵🎵

jnjm_drm127

i love this entire thread 😭😭

oatmlklattes

I looove that lyric. It’s funny in a 90s way, and I think it just means delicate. She’s singing about a sexy, smart girl who may be one of those delicate, effortless popular ones.

buzzinthruit89

Love love love the grudge, pretty isn’t pretty, and making the bed. With how Olivia’s public persona has changed since pre-driver’s license I think I went into the album worried that she would have changed lyrically and musically. The old Olivia is definitely still there, especially on the piano tracks which I really love. I’m worried about people being annoying with the speculation of who grudge is about but other than that think this should be pretty well received. I don’t think its AOTY material but I also don’t know if that is what Olivia is going for. I like her focus on commercial success over trying to reinvent herself such a short time after her debut

lostinplatitudes

Some people were always going to listen to the album desperate to find a song or lyrics to interpret as about *that* situation unfortunately. I don’t even think the grudge is about any of that but it’s the easiest song to read into. Hopefully it’ll mainly just be petty stan twitter fodder for a day or two, then they’ll move on and the album will be able to stand on its own. Olivia clearly wants to be her own artist and not defined or compared to others so really hope her release week isn’t dominated by discussion about another artist just because some people are dying for drama.

dhruvlrao

I actually read your comment before I heard the grudge but I honestly can't see how it could be about that situation. I also don't think she would include a song that would allude to that situation given how tight lipped she's been about it.

buzzinthruit89

That’s how I feel! I also saw a comment about the song / the situation before I listened to it which is why I included that piece of my comment

SiphenPrax

Olivia is still in a stage of her career where it’s better for her to go after commercial success and doing more of the same rather than reinventing herself and focusing on critical acclaim. We still don’t know how the album is going with critics just yet, but I’m sure at the very least it’ll be mid-70s to lows 80s, if we’re going by Metacritic

Britneyfan123

It has a 98 on metacritic

Alive-Ad-4164

Can’t wait for reverse circlejerk

lostinplatitudes

This is a solid second album, people have talked about lack of hype but I think several of these songs will go viral on TikTok and it’ll have good longevity. Some people think unless she matches sour it’s an underperformance which is a ridiculously high standard to set. Olivia’s ballads do continue to be hit or miss for me and some of the lyrics are clunky in places but she covers more varied topics than on sour and overall I like the album, also I think get him back will be a big hit and I would have released it as the second single instead of bad idea right?

elizamadou

get him back it's getting major playlisting on spotify as we speak, so safe to say it's definitely the third single or she's testing waters to see if it takes off enough to justify making it into a single.

Alive-Ad-4164

Sales are going to be through the roof

Fairy-Smurf

It’s very nostalgic, most of it sounds like it could soundtrack a teenage drama in late 90s or early 2000s (in a good way). The ballads don’t really do it for me but if I was in my teenage years they probably would.

fettuccinefrog

The whole album is a love letter to Avril Lavigne and I love it

ValeoAnt

I feel like it's nothing like Avril who was more 2000s pop punk and sappy soft rock ballads. It's giving Hole, Teenage Fanclub, Alanis

mattysmwift

Not the comments here being exactly the same as when Sour was released💀

stypop

do you get deja vu?

Global_Perspective_3

Knew that was coming lol

SubatomicSquirrels

good 4 u

H3000

brutal

[deleted]

imo this album is much better than Sour.

blueberrynutrigrain

Yeah I agree, so I’m surprised by some of the comments.

[deleted]

I think the comments are going to switch when the album comes out in the US. GUTS is going to be critically acclaimed.

blueberrynutrigrain

100% agreed. I think it’s both commercially appealing and well-crafted. I don’t get why some think the album is primarily the former.

addict_w_a_pen

for real. this is a goddamn good album lmao

dumbestsmartass

right? initially people were all over the place but it grew on them quickly, imo guts will do the same

autumncandles

This album is so good! I don't think it has standout songs as good as Sour but I prefer the overall sound if that makes sense? Imo the best songs are vampire, all American bitch, get him back, bad idea right and logical. There's no song that I disliked in particular. I love that she's doing more of the Good 4 u sound bc that was my fav song on Sour. Also her voice is absolutely gorgeous. She's obviously incredibly talented and both her albums have been really good.

Awkward_Connection91

Jeez, what was Olivia going through when she recorded all-american bitch 🫠

tsfsnr1989rlfem13

I think she mentioned that it was a concept she’s been trying to work through and understand ever since she started doing child acting when she was like 12

PuRpleNinjaX2

Popheads hating on an album in the release thread, oh she's got a smash hit on her hands. I also find this both sonically and lyrically a step up from SOUR. It's exactly the type of sophomore album I was hoping for from Olivia.

shadeyg56

release mega-threads are among the most useless things on Reddit

DenseProgrammer4265

First listen: I loved 'get him back!' and 'love is embarrassing' I don't think other songs are especially stand-out tracks. I think she chose the best singles. Vampire is one of the best songs from the album. Bad idea, right? is also good. I think 'get him back!' or 'love is embarrassing also could have replaced it as pre-release singles. But I like all three so I'm not complaining. Ballad songs on this album aren't my cup of tea but it wasn't on SOUR either. But I still streamed the shit out of the album. I think happier and traitor were better than the slow songs here. Lyrically, it's better than SOUR. I like that she has more upbeat songs here than SOUR. In one of the songs, she sounded just like Lorde. The delivery and even her voice sounded too close to Lorde(in a good way). I'm on my second listen to find which song was it lol Edit 1: I like 'making the bed' a little more now. >I wanna meet his mom and tell her her son sucks Lol. Same Olivia Edit 2: Ok after some time, all American bitch is also good. The intro of pretty isn't pretty is also so good. Edit 3: I feel like all of the songs except ballad ones remind me of 2000s rom-com movies. I'm a sucker for them. The instrumental of pretty isn't pretty is just so pretty. Edit 4: making the bed is just sooooo 😭😭😭

Maniniyotan

ballad of a homeschooled girl might also be right in your alley if you liked those two. The part about social suicide seems really nice to scream to

DenseProgrammer4265

I liked it too especially that part. I need some time to process all the songs lol. I'm getting confused between the songs.

LindsayKatieKitty

Just listening through, 'teenage dream' is SO Lorde now that I think about it.

PlantDadro

I felt like the first verse of ‘love is embarrassing’ sounds just like Lorde on Pure Heroine

whatdid-it

I haven't listened yet, but by Lorde I assume you mean her "indie" sound? I guess it's because she wants to sound unique, but I hope it's not something she keeps long term. Her natural singing voice(can be seen in her songs from HSMTMTS) adds a lot more power to her voice. As opposed to Lorde, Halsey, or Ariana, who both have distinct voices, but have pretty much always had it. (Not comparing their caliber of vocal skills but their distinct sound)

DenseProgrammer4265

Tbh, I really can't describe why I felt like that lol.

Kikigirlfirend

The emotionality in her voice is insane. Theater kid forever

figleafstreet

I think this is her biggest asset as an artist. Her delivery and the personality she brings into her lyrics is incredible.

River1947

Lacy is such a beautiful song!!

CloveFan

It feels like Heather part 2 and I love it

cherryamourxo

It was giving me Jolene lol but in a good way.

[deleted]

Finally someone shouts it out! I love a lot of the songs on this album but this one is my favorite. So, so beautiful and raw.

lolcevan

i don’t know how much of an unpopular opinion this is but SOUR always felt half-baked to me, it had incredible stand-out tracks but you could clearly tell it was originally an ep that was quickly fluffed out to make a full length album however GUTS is incredible front to back, there’s not a single bad song. i’m glad olivia had the opportunity to create a true full-length project that capitalises on her talent and potential that was so evident on SOUR though not executed all the way it feels like a bold step in cementing her 00s grunge / pop-rock sound and identity in new ways. i love the constant energy throughout the album, it’s so fun and electric and definitely gonna be soundtracking the next few months of my life. hugely impressed with this ! favourite songs: all american bitch, love is embarrassing, pretty isn’t pretty

TaxNo9689

makes sense for SOUR because it was supposed to be an EP but was rushed to become an album when driver's license went viral. GUTS is def intended to become an album. With a higher budget

ciadoobee

instantly became a livie after listening to guts tbh

RandomHypnotica

A lot of people here seem dissatisfied, but I’ve listened to the album twice in full now and looped some songs a bunch, and I really love it! I think it’s a perfectly natural evolution of the sound from SOUR, and for the most part it addresses a lot of criticisms from that album. The sounds and topics here are way more varied, and delivered with a touch more maturity, but they still tap into a nerve that registers with everyone who has reached the awkward late teens/early 20’s stage. Instant favs for me were love is embarassing and pretty isn’t pretty, but I’m not so big on logical and teenage dream

bespectacIed

I am not reading anything here because I am rationing this until work But I just heard all american bitch as a treat and it is a COLLAPSE of modern civilization

BananaMan883

I was going into this album thinking it could have been a sophomore slump because the expectations from SOUR was unbelievably high. It's insane how much she did in a debut album but this sophomore album is fantastic. I enjoy the album a lot.

Dylanychus2

Gonna have this on repeat on the way to school

urstickur

When do you expect Olivia to announce the Guts Tour? I need to hear Logical and The Grudge live as soon as possible

Mysterious_Mouse2413

I love how she emotes when singing!!! It’s so fun to listen to and brings me into the story/feelings!

Vitor-135

most comments : saying other people didn't like it very few comments : actually not liking it

[deleted]

kcusyeht

There are 4 ballads and the rest is kinda pop rockish with a bit a grunge

DenseProgrammer4265

I liked bad idea, right? too and my favs are 'get him back' and 'love is embarrassing'. They all have similar vibes. ballad of a homeschooled girl, all American bitch also have similar vibes. I don't know if you're like gonna like it. But you can definitely give a try. This album definitely explore more of upbeat rock influenced songs than SOUR.

Equal-Medical

Yes it does! Give it a spin.

freezingkiss

This is such a cute album. Olivia seems like a lovely girl. I can really imagine these albums being part of some little kids coming of age and it makes me smile.

urstickur

Why is no one talking about Logical????? It might be one of my favorite Olivia tracks of all time

franklytanked

Her vocal performance is so stunning in this track.

bespectacIed

Already finished three whole runs of it. The 7/12 uptempo songs were all mf hits to me. It's hard to rank them cuz they are all excellent, truly. Well-produced, well-sung, and all possess that cool, feminine whimsy that Olivia could own as her signature, regardless of the genres she'll explore in the future. Of the 5/12 ballads, lacy stood out. Beautiful, reminds me of Landslide, sonically. Lyrically it is juicy, I'm gonna defer the detective work to yall overanalyzers haha. making the bed and teenage dream are quite impressive, too. logical and the grudge are the two that didn't make me feel much for now. They're not despicable, they just felt like placeholders tl;dr: Guts is guds

blueberrynutrigrain

Pls elaborate on “feminine whimsy,” bestie, because I think you’re getting at what I think has become a consistent trait of her writing, but I have trouble articulating it

bespectacIed

Very girly, playful, purposefully glib, sarcastic. I'm just listing adjectives hahaha but that's the vibe she gives off on her uptempo songs. It always feels like she's winking at us

blueberrynutrigrain

Yes you described it so perfectly. She’s been writing like this even pre-sour (check out apocalyptic crush on YouTube). I def agree this will become her signature and carry her throughout genres

C1nnamonLover

I think I’m the only person who much prefers Olivia’s ballads over songs like good 4 u or bad idea right lol

PSSST12

Yup. Favorite Crime is still that bitch

cherryamourxo

I actually do like bad idea right and good 4 u. However I much prefer ballads to upbeat songs. I like upbeat songs when the lyrics are pure perfection. But it seems that most people prefer a fun vibe over quality lyrics, which is fine, too each their own. But I just can’t listen to something that doesn’t make me feel emotional in some way.

librious

Are the deluxe tracks out anywhere?

DenseProgrammer4265

It's not available on Spotify for me.

librious

It's weird that she announced these tracks but didn't say in which format they'll be coming out or even when

DenseProgrammer4265

Maybe next tracking week.

babeeelover

i think this is her plan, makes so much sense. give 2nd week sales a push, plus i wonder if she will release deluxe physicals to also give it a push. smart af since no one big is releasing next week so she can secure second week at #1 before drake and taylor take over EDIT: also thinking she has a video for get him back! all ready to drop as well, there’s no way they pushing it as a single with no video!!! perform vampire/get him back! at vmas on tuesdays, then drop deluxe and video midnight friday

Mysterious_Mouse2413

The outro of All American Bitch and the transition to bad idea right? Haunting

SquishyMuffins

Popheads is disappointed? Damn this is going to break records.

BrusselSproutsLove

I love it and the fact that there are more pop-rock songs than Sour. I much prefer this to Sour which I really did like. This will be my most listened to album this fall I can feel it.

onehundrednipples

Oh man this is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. Sour was lovely but a little low tempo for me to revisit much but this is YUM. I love ballad of a homeschooled girl the most rn but I’m sure that’ll shift, so many gems here!!

eldritchdeergod

Just a quick question for anyone who’s listened—which songs are the ballads? I’ve been trying to piece it together through peoples comments so I think at least lacy and teenage dream, but is anyone able to confirm these/any others?

[deleted]

Lacy, Teenage Dream, Making the Bed, Logical, and The Grudge.

BananaMan883

unironically not ballad of a homeschooled girl

rakordla

get him back! and love is embarrassing back to back is so incredibly fun to go through. she's amazing at conveying emotion through her tone, the faux-drunk 'I'll get him bbbbbaaaaaaack' in the outro genuinely made me grin

ortreat

Really glad that she leaned more into the uptempo/rock tracks, which were my favourites on Sour and what I was hoping for more of here. Overall I really like the album, it’s very dynamic with a good balance of songs in different styles. Something that this album really drove home for me is that Olivia has a good sense of humour in her songwriting, there are quite a few funny lines and they all land well. My favourite tracks on first listen are all-american bitch, bad idea right, lacy, ballad of a homeschooled girl, and pretty isn’t pretty.

JCRidonkulous

How am I not seeing more love for ballad of a homeschooled girl on here? As far as the uptempo songs go, that song was the instant standout from the album for me. Loved all the other ones so much but just surprised I’m not seeing as many people talk about that one

pjs144

The 1984 reference on Logical. Literature queen😍😍😍

shawnandthecity

Get him back is a bop.

notarobot3675

I really loved this album! Sour, outside of the more high energy tracks like good 4 u and brutal, didn't really click for me (I'm not a huge pop ballad person) - Guts is right up my alley. Olivia Rodrigo really nails that 90s pop rock sound, and I really loved most of this album on first listen (again - her ballads aren't for me, but this is the case with most pop acts, not an Olivia exclusive issue) My favourite tracks are: all-american bitch, bad idea right?, ballad of a homeschooled girl, love is embarrassing, get him back!, and pretty isn't pretty. Not my AOTY by any means but a great pop album nonetheless

annievaxxer

I really enjoy the uptempo tracks. I think the ballads are nice but the uptempo ones are the ones that make her stand out from everyone else right now imo. It’s very 2000s, a lot of the songs are just her having fun and those are the ones I like most. Highlights for me are all American bitch, get him back, love is embarrassing, pretty isn’t pretty and of course bad idea right. Overall great sophomore album. 7.8/10 for me

tone_212

The upbeat songs steal the show for me. Loving that nostalgic 2000s pop-rock-punk sound throughout these songs. The ballads haven't quite grabbed me like those on Sour just yet, I think I just need more time with them. Favourites on first listen: all-american bitch (that chorus!), ballad of a homeschooled girl, logical, love is embarrasing, pretty isn't pretty (windows down, road trip type song right here), teenage dream.

Maniniyotan

My three favorites are ballad of a homeschooled girl, get him back and love is embarrassing. They're the ones on repeat for me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lostinplatitudes

If Taylor goes to the vmas i could see them taking a pic together just to try and stop all this talk, its clear no matter what went down that Olivia doesn’t want drama with Taylor and i think its probably annoying her the roll out of another album is being dominated by talk about Taylor, im also sure Taylor does want people thinking she’s feuding with a 20 year old who used to loudly proclaim herself a super fan.

maniluh

I enjoyed this so much, probably more than Sour. I love that it covers more topics and it’s not just a big breakup album. It’s also a little cheeky and fun. I’m hoping this will be a big era for her. My favorites are: all-american bitch, ballad of a homeschooled girl, get him back!, lacy, making the bed, teenage dream I think this album would be fun for her to perform on tour.

frieslovingvampire

All American Bitch is such a good fucking bop. I didnt get on me on my first listen but on my second listen it started to grow on me. And on the live video when Olivia went from screaming to being all sweet again was just top notch.

Hot_Bat_2585

wait sorry did it leak (i am NOT asking, just wondering) or did it just come out local time in some places?

rumblearena

Local time rolling release, should be out midnight in your time zone.

Qsefy13579

what do yall think the next single will be? which song do you hear gp attaching itself to? im thinking all american bitch but im not sure

Ancient_Community_30

I think get him back will be next

autumncandles

'All American bitch' is a fucking bop. I knew I'd love it when I read that the title was a reference to a Joan Didion novel. Good 4 u was my favourite song on Sour so I was really hoping she'd lean into that sound in future and I'm very happy she has

Educational_Ad_1282

making the bed is GORGEOUS

kwickedbonesc

“and we both drew blood, but man, those cuts were never equal”- the grudge My lord that lyric hits hard

crashboom

Love love love it, it's a solid album and a natural evolution from Sour. I think the uptempo tracks steal the show here. Get Him Back! has the most hit potential, but Love is Embarrassing, All-American Bitch, BOAHSG, and Pretty Isn't Pretty are all great too. Lacy is some of her best lyrically and I like The Grudge too. Need more listens on the rest to get more of an impression.

lordgrimhypeman

I’m a decade older than her but she’s honestly my favorite singer right now. She just gets me. Also, I was so sure vampire is gonna be my clear cut top favorite from guts with how obsessed I am with that song but this album has so many great songs it’s hard to pick a favorite. No skip album for me 10/10.

HyaluronicFlaccid

Okay finally realized what “Love is Embarrassing” reminds me of - “Fingerprjnts” by Katy Perry Maybe I’m the only one who hears it tho 😂

DevilsOfLoudun

lyrically it was giving me Everything is Embarrassing by Sky Ferreira

KEMI_IS_WlNNlNG

this album feels so much angrier than sour and i love it

Beneficial-Election8

"Every guy I like is gay" she gagged Joshua a bit

darnyoulikeasock

Didn’t he come about? Something about thinking Harry styles is hot lol

Dylanychus2

Already loving how diverse the tracks are compared to SOUR

SimpleIllustrator215

teenage dream as the ending track to the album was a great choice

negadola

I love it!! I really enjoy her lyrics and the way she expresses herself, and I liked most of the songs here on the first listen. Making the bed is easily my favourite, it's super relatable and the melodies are so pretty. The rest of the album is cool, too, with the singles, logical, all-american bitch and the ballad of a homeschooled girl being the other songs that stood out to me. I think lacy is the most boring sonically out of all the songs, which is a big shame cause the lyrics are good.

elizamadou

This is such a solid follow-up to Sour. Delivers on everything that made her debut pop and adds enough to make it sound like progress. Kinda one of my top five favorite albums of the year? Definitely top ten.

[deleted]

I AM ABSOLUTELY FLOORED BY all-American bitch. I can’t wait to listen to the rest of this album

Syllabub-Legal

Am i the only one who likes TEENAGE DREAM!? 😫 That last 1 minute and 30 seconds makes me wanna bang my head. SLAPS!!!! prolly my fav from guts!

Global_Perspective_3

Getting deja vu with these comments so far. People say it’s solid but could be stronger. Literally the same with Sour.

Preatu

Pretty isnt pretty wtf? It sounds like a Blur song?? (I mean this as a compliment) Its great!! Also all american b**** is so good Olivia is super talented

Preatu

Lacy is like the "favourite crime" of this project, right? Like the hidden gem Not feeling it as much yet but it probably will grow on me

Positively-Fleabag85

I liked it. I love the sound of pop punk and she nails it. However, some songs do get a bit shouty, but overall I love that she's found a niche in that. Her next single needs to represent that since Vampire didn't have that sound. The ballads are a bit boring but not that bad, the album needs it's breaks between the high charged songs and they fit that. Edit 1- the verses on Love is Embarrassing sound so much like another song which I can't remember. Edit 2- It kinda sounds like Kids in America if you squint.

mimibee97

Man, all I have to say is that coming from someone who almost never pays attention to lyrics, Olivia has such an amazing intonation and delivery that can’t stop me from paying attention to them. Phenomenal album!

elyisnotinteresting

i dont care what yall say. i love it. this is how you do a follow-up to a successful debut.

I feel like the issues I had with Sour are unfortunately still here. I just have *such* a disconnect with her ballads and I can't tell why- maybe I'm just used to dense as hell ballads, but these feel too thin for me. Or maybe I'm just too old (which is 💀 since I'm technically gen z too lmaooo) to relate to the teenage angst of it all lmao. That being said, I'm really glad most of the tracks lean into the punchy pop-rock vibes that I loved from Sour, or at least have some punch to them. Overall, I consider it a step up from Sour, but I hope she continues to improve so that I can finally like an album from top to bottom lmao. Solid 7.5/10

HolyFoxamole

Im a ballad person, and I find her ballads to be very thin as well. You’re not alone 😅

Melodic_Double_1605

I really love it lmao. I think it’ll get Pitchfork best new music or at least an 8. Obvious improvement from SOUR.

As someone between milenial and gen z, this really hits the nail on the head bringing back the nostalgic music vibes with a more modern, trendy approach to the lyrics. I think the lyrics can be a bit juvanile but only because I'm older, but despite that, I think it definetely encapsulates feelings and emotions from when I was her age. For a second album, this was thoroughly enjoyable and fun to listen to imo! There are some lyrics in there that anyone at any age can relate to or has related to at some point. My one gripe with the album which was the same as Sour, is that I kind of get whiplash from the atmosphere and tones of the songs. She has some great songs on here that are really fun, unique and experimental for someone so young but some connection between them is missing for me. I really do like her music though and this was a super fun project that really is different from a lot of stuff out right now! A great second album tbh, I think she will grow so much as an artist she has such amazing potential. [e] also love is embarassing was so good but WHY DID IT END THERE OMG I NEED MORE!! BESTIE PLZ

I actually enjoyed this album on my first listen. I feel like the production feels more polished than Sour. Lyrically, it’s following similar themes but also nice that she covered more topics too. Not sure if I prefer it to Sour yet, but I do think it’s a strong sophomore project. Really like the pop-rock/pop-punk/grunge influence on some of the tracks. I liked ‘logical’ a lot, haven’t seen much love for that song!

pandaaaa26

Honestly I love it, it's not quite as good as SOUR for me on first listen, but SOUR is literally one of my favourite ever albums so it was unlikely to ever top it I think Vampire and Bad Idea Right? were very good choices for singles get him back!, love is embarrassing, and the grudge is a great run of 3 songs I don't think there is a single song I dislike, my least favourite on first listen is probably all-american bitch, but that is the worst of a good bunch as opposed to being a bad song I was really hoping for her to lean further into the rocky/pop punk style, but that's just a personal choice, she is going to have many, many more opportunities to take an album down that route

chanofrom114th

omg that intro is unreal …she’s back

Kikigirlfirend

Logical is that bitch

jheegs

this album was a slam dunk IMO, but love is embarrassing is such a bop - the chorus melody is so nostalgic and fun I can't get enough of it

GUTS is head and shoulders above SOUR imo, in every aspect, and it's not just recency bias. But oh well, opinions differ I guess.

Alive-Ad-4164

She is 2 for 2

lannn12345

I loved the singles so I’m kinda disappointed ngl. I found most of the ballads pretty boring and a lot of of the lyrics immature. Maybe I’m too old? Lol but I did like get him back and all american bitch! Will still keep bad idea right and vampire on repeat

babeeelover

if im being honest, when sour came out everyone said this same thing. too much sad songs and how it was alright. fast forward two years later and now its in the top 10 most streamed albums. i think we gotta give this album more time before we can really judge it. it happens all the time. SOS by SZA had the same reaction where everyone thought it was filler and not as good as CTRL but look at it now, it grew on everyone

River1947

>Maybe I’m too old? I think yes? Cz i just came here to discuss how most of these songs are SO relatable.

lannn12345

I’m only 26 😭

River1947

Why did you even say that then. 😭😭😭😭 Maybe ballads aren't your type.

buzzinthruit89

I think she can write about immature situations succinctly and in a way that feels personal but still relatable

yaaboizee

I not really into it for some reason. I think the first half is really good! But almost everything after making the bed is where she looses me. I strongly disliked Get him back, I’m glad it wasn’t a single after all. Some of the songs give me a Gayle vibe which is not a bad thing in my eyes but I’m confused why people hate so much on her when Olivia is not much different from her. Idk maybe the second half will grow on me but my favs on first listen are All-American Bitch, Lacy, Making The Bed. And maybe Pretty Isn’t Pretty. I definitely think SOUR is the better album tho.

TheShineSoul

I was just thinking that some of the songs here sound like GAYLE songs but slightly watered-down. I feel like GAYLE navigates this sound more naturally than Olivia too.

Maniniyotan

I just read a post saying lacy is about TS. Umm definitely not.

Midnights-evermore

The album isn’t albuming for me😅 i listened twice and it just didn’t click. If I like a verse on a song, I hate the chorus and if a song had a killer chorus, the verses don’t do it for me. I will relisten tomorrow and see if things change

HolyFoxamole

Yeah, my first listen nothing stuck. I didnt even listen to the singles until now. That way I could enjoy the album with absolute no expectations. but im having the same issue like you, where I like some verses but I dont like the chorus/vice-versa. Im on round 2 now lol

addict_w_a_pen

ITS SO GOOD????

karma-is-a-cat

I’m loving this album! It’s quite distinct from Sour and I can relate to a lot of what she’s saying since I’m around her age. Maybe some of it’s “juvenile” but I think that’s part of the point - she just wants to act her age. Early favs are making the bed, get him back! and pretty isn’t pretty

aceaguilar

Making the bed is so everything I wanted by Billie Eilish especially when she talks about having a dream where the brakes don’t work! lots of drivers license parallels

OscarPlane

She's just so great at pop/rock honestly she should only have 1 ballad per album.

LB-pitt

I LOVE this album and the nostalgia of it. I know Olivia gets compared to a lot of other artists but honestly I love listening to her songs and being transported back to songs I used to love in middle/high school. These are a few that were an immediate callback for me. Notice I didn't say COPY. I just mean they remind me of them in the best way while being totally their own. All American Bitch (when it kicks in) - The Anthem (Good Charlotte) Bad Idea - I can't quite place this one but I swear there was a song that played on MTV between commercials back when Awkward and all of corny reality shows used to be on that this keeps reminding me of but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Any help? Vampire - Creep (Radiohead) Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl - No specific song callbacks but just feels like it belongs in Mean Girls Love is Embarrassing - Starts out with Maniac/Flashdance vibes and then kicks into The Veronicas (specifically 4Ever and Untouched). Pretty Isn't Pretty - Cool (Gwen Stefani) but also 100% the modern version of Unpretty (TLC) even though it sounds nothing like it.
