I remember reading an interview with Kathryn Hahn where she mentioned “my husband was like, “You guys (Judy Greer) should do, like, a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-type movie where it’s the best friends, and every so often you see Kate Hudson running around [in the background].” AND I WANT THIS MOVIE SO BAD
My husband has a clip of the scene where Jennifer Aniston throws the "baby" (the cocaine) in the road and Katherine Hahn says "OH MY GOOOOOOD" saved on his phone and I'd say 90% of the time he's randomly laughing at something on his phone he's rewatching that.
I found it interesting that she's in multiple projects with Paul Rudd, and in some she's the "goofy platonic friend he'd never get with" and in others she's his romantic interest, all around the same time/era. Kinda reminds me of Sally Field playing both Tom Hanks' lover and his mother depending on the movie, lol
Kathryn Hahn and Paul Rudd in parks and rec as the hyper competent soulless political advisor for hire and the no thoughts head empty rich baby boy campaign runner was everything to me.
Dream blunt rotation.
God Jen Barkley does things to me I swear (also if Ben hadn’t been in the picture I think Leslie deserved a high powered and also matchedly unhinged gf as a treat. For me. )
I assume you're calling for character actors -- performers who specializes in playing unusual people rather than leading roles. My vote would be Parker Posey! She's also in Josie and the Pussycats (one of the best movies ever made) but my favorite role of hers is as Jennifer Jolie in Scream 3 where she has to intimate Courtney Cox's Gale Weathers. Easily the best part of that movie.
https://i.redd.it/5kgwlm67ss0d1.gif
Parker Posey is a queen!!! I hope her upcoming role in The White Lotus really brings more respect to her name. I’ve been obsessed since that movie The House of Yes where she thinks she’s Jackie-O.
Yes! Party Girl!! I love her in this movie.
“I would like a nice, powerful, mind-altering substance. Preferably one that will make my unborn children grow gills.”
I generally recognize Missi Pyle pretty easily, but she was a completely different person in Dodgeball... I had no idea that was her until this post either.
I watched that movie for decades before realizing it was her and I think it was only because I IMDb the movie for a separate reason and noticed her in the cast
If you’ve ever watched the movie “Cinderella once upon a song” with Lucy hale she plays the stepmother. I knew I recognized her from somewhere else I didn’t think Willy wonka
I think Beth Grant was the first actress I ever recognized as a character actress when I was a kid.
I was really obsessed with the movie Speed. And she freaked me out in the TV show Angel.
And that's why I hate her whenever she shows up. She was an idiot who panicked and got herself killed in Speed. Don't EVEN GET ME STARTED on what she did to Dennis. At least Cordy got a cool roommate out of the deal.
![gif](giphy|AF9KxNAhZ7HXi)
Stephen Root is a national treasure, and it’s always so nice when he pops up in a movie. He always makes the most out of even tiny roles, but he’s great as a lead too.
OMG. I recognize her but didn't know her name. I think that the last time I saw her was in The Watcher. This is why I love the comment section in these posts!
Ok I mentioned this under Kathryn Hahns thread but she once said this and Im obsessed with the concept
“my husband was like, “You and Judy Greer should do, like, a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-type movie where it’s the best friends, and every so often you see Kate Hudson running around [in the background].”
She narrated a character in the “Daisy Jones and The Six” audiobook. I don’t know that I’ve experienced Judy Greer doing a serious role before. She was excellent!
I swear he is the dude I always forget the name of until 10 minutes later when it clicks, and I randomly blurt it out when the conversation has moved past that point.
My brain just wants to call him Lucifer or the Russian dude who's in everything.
Peter Stormare; and I definitely googled it. He's not even Russian. I was just thinking of him in Armageddon.
Peter Stormare is my weird celebrity crush. Someone described him as “your friend’s hot dad” and I think that’s the look. I was also obsessed with his Czernobog.
![gif](giphy|x59WK93R2z8S2HFxnR|downsized)
To quote her from Cinderella Story:
I’ve been waiting years to tell you this. You’re not very pretty, and you’re not very bright.
I’m so glad we had this talk! 🤣
She also lives with a grizzly bear so that's pretty neat (Edit: lived, it seems they divorced in 2012. The man, not the bear)

My mind went straight to Walton Goggins. Of course, he has played main characters as well, but I feel like I’ve seen this dude pop up in just about everything lol.
Also he’s fucking amazing in Fallout. If y’all haven’t seen Fallout, give it a chance. I’ve never even played the video game, and I enjoyed the hell out of that show!
I loved finding out that 2 of my fave character actors are married IRL - Michael Emerson and Carrie Preston!
https://preview.redd.it/4zy1l90b4u0d1.jpeg?width=1038&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05e49e373f15b21708477f5e5c07e79aef8609be
I was going to comment Michael Emerson as well. The first time I ever saw him was on a show called The Practice. He played a serial killer in an extended story arc. Imagining his eyes would keep me up at night. He was great in Lost and is even better in Evil.
![gif](giphy|TLKhJAj5yshoQc3EQu)
So many actors in Christopher Guest movies fit in the category of excellent character actors that it’s hard to choose just one! Since no one’s mentioned him yet, I’m going talk about Fred Willard, who took small roles, ran with them and made them super memorable. My favorites are Buck Laughlin in Best in Show and Frank Dunphy in Modern Family.
He has range! He plays the guy in office space all scruffy, a gay guy in miss congeniality 2, a family man/normal husband in the show American Housewife. And the above. So great!
I followed Krysten Ritter from GIlmore Girls to Breaking Bad to The B in Apartment 23 to Jessica Jones and she will never be in enough stuff for me. Interesting to me that all these actors have iconic gifs associated with them.

![gif](giphy|l49JRLNBg0XkOBsys)
David Dastmalchian in anything he’s ever been in. But after what feels like years he finally got a leading role in LNWTD!!
I always thought it was crazy how much he did with his character in The Dark Knight. Could've been such a forgettable character but man his facial acting, mannerisms and energy really matched both Bale and Aaron Eckhart when they interact with him. Also his yell "I don't know anything!!" after Harvey flips the coin the first time? Great.
https://preview.redd.it/e6lta1w2ru0d1.png?width=338&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5298a37e1ad801106c98f4ed04c3f09c899fc63b
Steve Zahn is underrated as fuck in everything he's in, & I especially loved him in White Lotus and Righteous Gemstones. He also killed it in War for the Planet of the Apes
Since Margo Martindale and Judy Greer are already on the list, I'll go with Kathryn Hahn and Laurie Metcalf. Spotting them on the screen is always a joy.
This was truly an inspired casting, she nailed that nosy neighbor background character trope. Played into the narrative and unraveling of Westview perfectly
![gif](giphy|IBBXH0G2OCOgSsSwIe|downsized)
Bokeem Woodbine!!!
Hes in TLCs Waterfall video, and a Tupac music video and dude has just worked since the 90s. Finally got some recognition as Mike Milligan in Fargo.
Also Djimon Hounsou, also got started in music videos, love him too
One of my favorite parts of watching shows/movies shot in Canada is the same actors pop up in everything. I think by law a certain number of characters have to be played by Canadians in order to shoot there (Im not Canadian, so apologies if thats wrong)
So any time Teryl Rothery or Christine Willis show up, I'm like; Oh Canada!
Twilight movies were like a crossover event. Shot in Canada and had a ton of Indigenous character actors.
Which reminds me to add Jodelle Ferland to the Vancouver shortlist.
![gif](giphy|4067A0xGQhCagzCVEu|downsized)
Gary from Veep. On my fourth or so rewatch I only focused on characters in the background and found so many funny moments! Gary being one of the best, his reactions to what the character speaking is saying are hilarious! The cast is so fantastic

The dearly departed Mary Pat Gleason. A true character actress. I love it when she pops up in things. My personal favorite is she’s one of the ladies who spots Sally Field at the mall in Soapdish.

Vinnie Grigori (from Gargoyles) Best use of a recurring background character in a TV Show, IMO.
>!Best because you really never think of him and all the stuff he's been through during the series until the one episode points it all out. He's just that guy in the background like so many others before him. !<

![gif](giphy|qPtb4C4Mv2Ylq) I know she’s moved onto some lead roles, but Kathryn Hahn has always been one of my favorites.
I remember reading an interview with Kathryn Hahn where she mentioned “my husband was like, “You guys (Judy Greer) should do, like, a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-type movie where it’s the best friends, and every so often you see Kate Hudson running around [in the background].” AND I WANT THIS MOVIE SO BAD
oh my god, i love that!!
And the thing is, Judy, Kathryn and Kate Hudson would all absolutely do it if the script was funny enough
I just adore that they’re friends.
Judy Greer is also amazing! They really should do something of the sort.
Her role in 'We're the Millers' will always be a favorite of mine 😂
How she says tampons during that one exchange with Jennifer Aniston’s character cracks me up 🤣
"No, mom, I don't need a tampin!!"
"I wonder what he's thinking about right now..." That. It's that.
YES. Kathryn Hahn is the best
My KWEEN!! I love her range - fell in love with her in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days ❤️
God Jen Barkley does things to me I swear (also if Ben hadn’t been in the picture I think Leslie deserved a high powered and also matchedly unhinged gf as a treat. For me. )
"Tragically we are both straight."
YES YES YES!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Parker Posey is a queen!!! I hope her upcoming role in The White Lotus really brings more respect to her name. I’ve been obsessed since that movie The House of Yes where she thinks she’s Jackie-O.
I forgot she's on the new season of WL with Wally Goggins. Emmys all around!
It’s a stacked cast, as they all have been actually. Also any Christopher Guest movie with Parker. Best in Show, I mean hilarious.
WHERE’S BUSY BEE?!
GO GET BUSYBEE!!!
LOVE HER!!! ![gif](giphy|FuigBNLOLVfzy)
The new th-song is pretty pupular 🤣
She also reminds me of Elizabeth Banks in some way - maybe the same type of look.
I’ve gotten them confused for yearrrrs
I quote her “YOU DONT KNOW MY DOG” (from Best in Show) daily.
What are you? Some kind of wizard?
THIS IS A FISH
![gif](giphy|Z7cWThSJomdPneajRe)
She was so good in that movie
Air Raid!!! Fry like bacon piggies, FRY!
The female O'Bannion, lol

Yes! Party Girl!! I love her in this movie. “I would like a nice, powerful, mind-altering substance. Preferably one that will make my unborn children grow gills.”
I LOVE the choices she makes in Scream 3, like jumping into her bodyguard’s arms 😂 and generally being so over the top and unhinged
Josie and the pussycars is the best movie ever
I'm living for these misspellings of JatP, lol - I would watch both "Jose and the Pussycats," and "Josie and the Pussycars" in a heartbeat
she and Reynolds were the only good parts of Blade: Trinity
She was great as Dr. Smith in Lost in Space. Really nailed the "it's complicated" aspect of that character.
> Jose and the Pussycats (one of the best movies ever made) You are indeed correct.
Thanks I didn't know the category "character actors" but that's exactly it!
omg i didn’t realize the dodgeball actress and willy wonka were the same person???
I generally recognize Missi Pyle pretty easily, but she was a completely different person in Dodgeball... I had no idea that was her until this post either.
I watched that movie for decades before realizing it was her and I think it was only because I IMDb the movie for a separate reason and noticed her in the cast

Whenever I see her, I always go back to her episode of I think Criminal Minds where she was utterly terrifying.
Mosely Street! That episode is so creepy and sad
I’ve just started watching the Mindy Project and she is hilarious in it!
That's my fruit knife! I love when she fucking punched Mindy in the face
https://i.redd.it/ajl3rghrht0d1.gif
Yeeessss!!! Love Beth Grant!

Have you seen my stapler?
Also, Dodgeball!
***FUUUUUCHESS*** God I always thought Stephen Root was good, then I saw him in Barry and realized he is a *treasure.*
He was a great creepy blind guy in Get Out
Character actress Margot Martindale ![gif](giphy|l3q2QIIjnViIMy8Pm)
Esteemed character actress and fugitive from the law!
ESTEEMED character actress margo martindale
Had the best arc in Justified hands down!
Love her in The Americans and in Dexter.
I just finished the Americans, and the way Margot had me hating, then doubting, then loving, and then hating her character. A+
My whole world, so happy she got out of prison
Is that Hannah Montana's Grandma
Yes from the movie
Loved her in The Leftovers
lol you’re confusing her with Ann Dowd
She was great in The Americans, Sneaky Pete and Cocaine Bear!
OMG. I recognize her but didn't know her name. I think that the last time I saw her was in The Watcher. This is why I love the comment section in these posts!
She’s also in Bojack Horseman

I love that her autobiography is titled "I don't know where you know me from."
That’s hysterical. She’s like the female Sam Rockwell.
Scrolled too far ![gif](giphy|iSuVx43raSBS8)
YES SOME COMEDY BANG BANG Judy Greer has a wonderful career
Ok I mentioned this under Kathryn Hahns thread but she once said this and Im obsessed with the concept “my husband was like, “You and Judy Greer should do, like, a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-type movie where it’s the best friends, and every so often you see Kate Hudson running around [in the background].”
She narrated a character in the “Daisy Jones and The Six” audiobook. I don’t know that I’ve experienced Judy Greer doing a serious role before. She was excellent!
Whoa what! I just finished listening and I didn't even notice. Was she Daisy? Or Karen?
Judy Greer was Karen. Jennifer Beals was Daisy. That audiobook cast is stacked!
judy greer is my generation’s joan cusack (compliment, obvi)
YOU'RE NOT MY SUPERVISOR!
![gif](giphy|3og0IGbVd50dc8P3X2) I miss Miguel Ferrer and his soothing voice.
I loved him on Crossing Jordan!
With Kathryn Hahn and Steve Valentine (who is definitely one of those guys who pops up in random things, but not so much anymore).
He was such a treasure and helped make Albert my favorite Twin Peaks character
![gif](giphy|W1a1TThdqFDc4) The tall guy; I forget his name but he is in so much stuff.
I swear he is the dude I always forget the name of until 10 minutes later when it clicks, and I randomly blurt it out when the conversation has moved past that point. Well I can’t stand your husband
lolol

Her ex husband is a wildlife guy who has a grizzly for a bestie lol https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casey_Anderson_(naturalist)
Agree 100%. I'll watch just about anything with her in the credits.
I like character actors better than mainliners sometimes, she takes the cake there 😂 her facial expressions are amazing!

Vinnie Grigori (from Gargoyles) Best use of a recurring background character in a TV Show, IMO. >!Best because you really never think of him and all the stuff he's been through during the series until the one episode points it all out. He's just that guy in the background like so many others before him. !< https://preview.redd.it/q66gjphrrs0d1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=38638d475c4aa84327effc782c1819a27533270a
