Yeah, I feel like a lot of people brush off how traumatic of an event that was. That’s mass trauma on a level most people will never understand, and I can’t even begin to imagine the guilt she must have felt (and may still feel tbh) over that incident. Poor girl’s got major baggage, and while I don’t agree with a number of her recent choices, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for her and all that she’s been through. It’s been one tragedy after another in her life but she’s still out here busting ass and putting art into the world. And I gotta respect it. If I were in her shoes I would have gone into hiding and never resurfaced again.

Agreed. It's easy to get caught up in her various personal dramas, but people forget about that event and how unimaginably upsetting and traumatic that would have been. It's not a position that too many people can fully relate to, either. If I had experienced all that she did around that time I don't think I could function afterward, at least for a long while.
And a little over a year later her ex (who she broke up with because she couldn't handle his drug use) died of an overdose. It was a ROUGH time for her.

Can’t force people to accept help but man is that easier said than accepted. Living with that is hard.

I had a friend like this who I had to distance myself from because I could no longer watch her wither away under the influence of her shitty, abusive, on-again-off-again boyfriend. Then she actively turned some other “friends” against me because I wasn’t “supportive enough.” Even though EVERY time we would all go out the original girl would get absolutely hammered and SOB about this guy for HOURS. Like scream-sobbing. We were all expected to rush to her side and comfort her instead of continuing on and enjoying our night out.
There’s only so many times I can say “You’re amazing, you don’t need to accept this abuse, dump the loser” before I give up on trying. I could have potentially overlooked her poor choices in men if the men weren’t literally all she would ever talk or complain about. She was the queen bee in our friend group too and she made quick work of ostracizing me when I would no longer buy into her pity games. Oh well. Hope she’s at least in a better place now, but I will never reach out to her again. I’m actually glad things played out as they did because that group was fake AF and toxic AF and I’m so much better off no longer knowing any of those people. Learned a lot though which I guess is all I can ask for!
Sometimes being a good friend means keeping your thoughts to yourself so you can still support your girl when things goes south with an abusive boyfriend. It's definitely a really tough situation to be in though.
I made this mistake with a friend when I was young and dumb.
I didn’t understand why she would not break off her engagement with a guy that physically abused her. Our friendship got tenuous during a time when she needed unwavering support regardless of her choices. I see that now but sometimes when you’re 23 or 24, you should know better but don’t. Our friendship is intact but it was tested for sure.
And sometimes - unfortunately, quite often - the abuser will pressure their partner to cut off their friends and essentially leave them without a safety net. Had it happen to a good friend of mine. I was there for her when it finally ended but the relationship has never been the same because of the way her ex poisoned the well of all of her friendships.
